The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in Langeberg calls for immediate intervention by the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, in the repair of the bridge between Robertson and McGregor as well as the Red Bridge before Bonnievale.
It is a dilemma, and the Freedom Front Plus expects solutions to restore normal traffic flow to be implemented faster.
Both bridges were severely damaged by the recent heavy rain and floods. McGregor is now only accessible via the Bonnievale gravel road, which is a detour of approximately 70 km.
In the party’s view, a shortage of essential equipment and skilled personnel is delaying repairs. In addition, the deadline for completion has been scheduled for three weeks from now. This delay is seriously affecting local residents and road users.
Alternative routes, which could take up to an hour longer, must be used. The agricultural community is hardest hit. Farmers suffered major losses during the recent floods and they are also the ones predominantly responsible for stimulating the local economy in rural areas. The small portion of the fruit harvest that could be salvaged is now being damaged when transported, because the only route to the market is via a gravel road.
It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to ensure that the affected roads are restored as soon as possible to alleviate the financial pressure on farmers who are already under severe strain.
High school learners from McGregor no longer have normal access to their schools in Robertson, resulting in additional costs for families already under financial pressure. Meanwhile, existing school hostels are overcrowded and alternative accommodation is either unavailable or extremely expensive.
Access to emergency services such as doctors and hospitals is restricted, and in emergencies, residents must use gravel roads or other time-consuming routes.
Even people’s jobs are at risk because they are unable to reach their workplaces, and the possibility of dismissals cannot be ruled out.
The tourism sector has virtually come to a standstill. Tourists no longer have access to these areas, so, bookings are cancelled. This has a severely detrimental impact on job opportunities and the local economy.
The Freedom Front Plus insists that the provincial government should appoint more competent companies to perform this specialised repair work. Communities cannot afford to wait another three weeks for the situation to normalise.
It appears that the urgency of the situation is not recognised.
Local companies with the capacity and required expertise should be brought in to assist. Local farmers have indicated that they are even willing to contribute financially towards professional services so that the roads can be repaired within a week.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep seeking solutions and pressuring the province on behalf of Langeberg residents.
Freedom Front Plus Women’s League: The party also has a women’s organization to promote female representation.
