Access to clean and reliable water is a basic necessity, yet residents continue to face disruptions that affect their daily lives, health, hygiene and dignity. Households, particularly vulnerable residents, are left carrying the burden of a service that local government has a responsibility to provide.
ActionSA believes residents should not have to struggle for access to water while waiting for municipal solutions. The municipality must urgently explain the causes of the shortages, provide emergency water supplies where necessary, assess the infrastructure contributing to the problem and present a clear recovery plan with practical interventions and timeframes.
Residents also deserve regular communication about water delivery arrangements and expected restoration times. Communities must not be left in the dark about when they can expect this essential service to be restored.
Water tankers can provide temporary relief, but they cannot replace reliable water infrastructure. The long-term priority must be sustainable solutions that ensure households have consistent access to clean water, supported by proper maintenance, effective planning and accountable municipal management.
As the 2026 Local Government Elections approach, the water shortages affecting these six wards highlight the importance of making basic service delivery a priority. Residents deserve local government that listens to their concerns, responds to service delivery failures and takes responsibility for resolving them.
ActionSA will continue to raise the concerns of affected communities and demand practical solutions to the water crisis in Dr JS Moroka. Residents deserve more than promises; they deserve reliable services, accountable leadership and access to the basic necessities of life.
