ActionSA condemns the disruption of the Emalahleni FM political debate at Klarinet after the ANC reportedly brought more audience members than political parties had been informed they could accommodate, despite an agreed limit of 15 members per party.

The ANC’s large turnout has reportedly left little room for supporters of other political parties, with tensions escalating and the debate brought to a standstill as the ANC refuses to back off.

A political debate is not an ANC rally. These platforms exist to allow political parties to engage on the issues affecting communities, present their solutions and account to residents. They should not be turned into contests over who can bring the biggest crowd at the expense of others.

ActionSA believes every political party and its supporters deserve a fair opportunity to participate. Agreed rules must be respected, and no party should be allowed to dominate a public political platform at the expense of others.

With the local government elections approaching, residents deserve mature political engagement focused on service delivery, accountability and the future of their communities, not unnecessary confrontations that prevent political debate from taking place.

Democracy means respecting the rules, respecting other parties and allowing every voice to be heard. The ANC must stop acting as though political platforms belong to it and respect the same rules that apply to everyone else.
