Following his recent helicopter trip over the Port of Durban, President Cyril Ramaphosa opened the cruise terminal with many container ships languishing outside the Port unable to enter due to massive backlogs.
The images and video of Ramaphosa inspecting the ‘carnage’ from afar reminded one of the old term; “Seagull Managers” – one who flies in after expensive preparations and hiding of controversial stuff by a branch hard pressed to make a profit, then squawks loudly at everyone, leaves bird poo everywhere and flies off to the next uitkak sessie having not really achieved much!
Well, flying in helicopters is quite a thing – like a big drone for millennials – so we have opposition political party leader John Steenhuisen up next:
On Monday, 27 November 2023, Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Leader, John Steenhuisen MP, accompanied by the DA’s Shadow Minister for Public Enterprises, Dr Mimmy Gondwe MP, will conduct an aerial oversight of the Durban harbour and surrounding ocean by helicopter, to assess the unfolding maritime port crisis which threatens to damage South Africa’s international goods trade and paralyse the retail economy ahead of the festive season.
The oversight visit will be followed by a press conference at which Steenhuisen and Dr Gondwe will unpack the DA’s action to hold the President, the Department of Public Enterprises, and Transnet accountable for decades of failure to maintain and enhance South Africa’s maritime ports to sustain the needs of our trade and logistics economy.
They will be joined by the DA KZN Premier Candidate, Chris Pappas and DA KZN Leader, Francois Rodgers MPL.
