SOUTH AFRICA: Portugal’s beloved pastel de nata continues to win hearts around the world. In TasteAtlas’s 2026 ranking of the world’s 100 best desserts, the iconic Portuguese custard tart secured second place, reaffirming its enduring appeal.

Now, Casa das Natas is giving South Africans even more reason to celebrate it.

Established in March 2022, the South African brand is introducing improved recipes across its existing range, alongside three exciting new flavours, available at all Casa das Natas stores from 30 October 2026.

Helping bring this next chapter to life is fifth-generation Lisbon baker João Batalha, who helped develop Casa das Natas’ original recipes in 2022. Having fallen in love with South Africa during his first visits, João has returned from Lisbon with fresh ideas and a mission to make the brand’s natas even better.

The classics, refined

The familiar favourites remain at the heart of Casa das Natas, with João bringing renewed attention to the recipes behind the range.

  • Lisboa Tradicional (R24): The Portuguese classic, featuring delicate, flaky pastry wrapped around smooth, creamy custard and finished with a beautifully golden top.
  • Vegan Traditional (R27): A plant-based take on the much-loved original, offering a vegan-friendly way to enjoy the familiar nata experience.
  • Apple Cinnamon (R27): Sweet apple meets warm, fragrant cinnamon in a comforting twist on the traditional tart.
  • Nutella (R27): Crisp pastry meets the irresistible chocolate-hazelnut flavour of Nutella for an indulgent favourite.

Three new flavours to discover

João has also brought fresh inspiration from Lisbon, introducing three new creations that put an exciting spin on the Portuguese classic.

  • Crème Brûlée (R27): Bringing theatre to the counter, the top is caramelised in front of the customer, creating a golden finish and that signature satisfying crack. It’s a little moment of culinary theatre that makes the experience as memorable as the first bite.
  • Tiramisu (R30): Inspired by Italy’s iconic dessert, this creation brings together creamy indulgence and coffee-inspired flavour in a delicious meeting of two European favourites.
  • Lotus Biscoff (R30): A vegan creation featuring the distinctive caramelised biscuit flavour of Lotus Biscoff. Rich, indulgent and entirely plant-based, it challenges expectations of what a vegan treat can be. Casa das Natas has a challenge for you: try it and tell us it isn’t amazing.

A classic that keeps getting better

For Casa das Natas, this is an evolution, not a reinvention. The brand remains rooted in Portugal’s baking heritage, with natas baked fresh every single day, while continually refining its recipes and exploring new flavours.

And when you’ve helped put a little peri-peri heat on the map, perhaps the natural next step is to give South Africa something sweet to talk about.
Four years on, Casa das Natas continues to celebrate the simple pleasure of a great nata: Portuguese in inspiration, South African in spirit, and always with room for another delicious discovery.

The improved range and all three new flavours will be available at all Casa das Natas stores from Friday, 30 October 2026.
