TSHWANE: In anticipation of the highly awaited multi-format tour to Australia later this month, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today announced the 25-player Proteas Women squad attending the national training camp in Tshwane between 06 – 12 January.

On the back of the epic showdown between South Africa and Australia at the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final in Cape Town, the two teams are set to face off once again from 27 January to 18 February.

This time, the battle will unfold in the shape of two three-match T20 International (T20Is) and One-Day International (ODIs) series before culminating in a historic four-day Test match. This marks the Proteas Women’s first Test fixture since facing England in June 2022 and their second red-ball encounter after taking on India in 2014.

In preparation for the tour, CSA will host a week-long training camp in Tshwane featuring a mixture of nationally contracted players along with the prospective luminaries from the SA U19 set-up and the Women’s National Academy Class of 2023, including SA Emerging players who traveled to Zimbabwe for a six-match T20 tour in November last year.

Laura Wolvaardt (Fidelity Titans, Captain), Anneke Bosch (Fidelity Titans), Tazmin Brits (Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers), Nadine de Klerk (Western Province), Nicole de Klerk (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Mieke de Ridder (Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers), Annerie Dercksen (Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers), Lara Goodall (Western Province), Ayanda Hlubi (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Sinalo Jafta (DP World Lions), Marizanne Kapp (Eastern Province), Ayabonga Khaka (DP World Lions), Masabata Klaas (Fidelity Titans), Suné Luus (Fidelity Titans), Eliz-Mari Marx (Fidelity Titans), Karabo Meso (DP World Lions), Nonkululeko Mlaba (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Refilwe Moncho (DP World Lions), Seshnie Naidu(Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Tumi Sekhukhune (DP World Lions), Nondumiso Shangase (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Miané Smit (Recon Tactical Free State), Chloé Tryon (DP World Lions), Delmi Tucker (Western Province), Caitlyn Wyngaard (Western Province)

Proteas Women Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez commented:

“The upcoming camp allows us to address certain areas within the squad and to create depth as we prepare for Australia. Transitioning our up-and-coming players into the camp only bodes well and addresses our succession planning, noting that the squad is in a re-building phase and we aim to use these opportunities to address those strategic areas.

“Although this tour is set to feature three formats, however, our focus over the next few days is the preparation to compete in the four-day Test Match and we are excited to catch on Australia on home soil,” he concluded.

The cricket bat has been a source of controversy in cricket. In 1771, one player attempted to breach the rules. Thomas White, an English cricketer, took his turn with a bat that was as wide as the wickets in the field. This ensured better defense and gave Thomas an unfair advantage. A protest by the opposing team ensued which later led to a change in cricket laws in 1774, setting the bat width to no more than 4.25 inches.
