TSHWANE: Cricket South Africa (CSA) will host a Young Guns Fast Bowlers Camp from 24 – 27 June at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria.

The Young Guns Fast Bowling Camp is a new initiative that forms part of the CSA Pace Bowlers Programme which aims to provide high performance support to young fast bowlers between the ages of 16 and 20.

The 12 young pacemen, who have shown potential to bowl over 140km/h, will be under the tutelage of Proteas Test bowling coach Piet Botha and assisted by SA U19 and Emerging Academy head coach Malibongwe Maketa.

Head of High Performance Grant van Velden said: “It is no secret that fast bowling is part of South African cricket’s DNA. It is imperative that we as Cricket South Africa invest in the next generation of fast bowling talent in South Africa and help them to develop technically, tactically, and physically.

“Young cricketers from around the country are eligible for selection from the age 16 and will remain in the programme until the age of 20, after which they will officially graduate from the programme.”

Shaun Pollock: Shaun Pollock came around the scene when South Africa’s bowling lineup was led by Allan Donald. He came and made a frightening duo with the legend and then eventually surpassed his record to become Proteas best bowler ever.
Pollock is South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in all the formats as he has 823 wickets to his name. He is also the 7th highest wicket-taker in the world in all formats.

Pollock was chosen as the Wisden cricketer of the year for 2013.

Although there are 31 countries that play cricket in the international stage, only 12 have qualified for Test status. The first countries to acquire this status are England and Australia (1877) and the latest is Afghanistan (2018).
