PIETERMARITZBURG: After four rounds of the Division 2 One Day Cup, it’s the ACDC Express Tuskers who have set the early pace with three wins and one rain out from their four matches so far in the competition.
The team from Pietermaritzburg has impressed across the competition so far with some strong performances including a resounding win over their nearest rivals at the time Eastern Cape Iinyathi at Buffalo Park in East London on Wednesday.
The Tuskers side have been emphatic in their victories and have claimed two bonus point wins from their three completed matches so far in the competition.
Sean Gilson’s 132 not out on Wednesday catapulted the Tuskers to the highest score of the season so far, 324 for three, which is proof that they are a difficult team to bowl to.
Tuskers seamer Ziyaad Abrahams has shone with the ball and is the tournament’s leading wicket taker with ten wickets from the three matches he has played.
Breathing down the necks of the Tuskers in second place with just one loss from their four matches so far in the tournament is the Northern Cape Heat.
That loss came in their opening match of the competition and with three wins on the bounce the Heat are starting to warm into the tournament.
The Heat have won three of their four matches and have claimed three bonus points victories in those matches to sit just one point adrift of the Tuskers.
The two teams are still yet to meet in the competition and will face off in Kimberley on 5 March which could prove to be a decisive match in the context of the tournament.
Also in a strong position after four matches is the Mpumalanga Rhinos.
The men from the Lowveld have also only lost one match, however, haven’t been as ruthless with their collection of bonus points. They haven’t picked up a bonus point and sit on 12 points from four matches.
A second loss for the Eastern Cape Iinyathi has set them back slightly as they prepare to host the Rhinos in their next match on 2 March.
Iinyathi side could have gone to the top of the table with a win against the Tuskers this week. That loss has meant that East Londoners will have their work cut out for them if they want to make the top two.
It’s been a mixed bag from the Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers who have won twice but then also lost twice so far. They arrested a two-match losing run when they beat the SA Emerging team on Wednesday by 52 runs.
Individually the Badgers have had the experienced Kelly Smuts in good form. The all-rounder is currently the competition’s top run scorer with 230 runs from his three innings.
The Eastern Storm will need to turn their fortunes around after two consecutive losses in the competition. They won their opening match, had their second match abandoned and have followed that up with two losses to sit second to last on the table.
With three matches left in the group phase of the tournament the SA Emerging side are yet to get a win.
It’s been a tough campaign so far for the youngsters who will be desperate to get a victory in the competition. The SA Emerging side are the defending champions of the competition, however it’s unlikely they will be able to get to a position to defend that title.
It’s a cut-throat competition for the teams with no semi-finals. The top two teams in the competition will go straight through to fight it out in the final on 14 March.
