It is ironic that the DA in the Western Cape Parliament rejected a motion tabled by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) for more protection for matriculants, particularly during the exams, but then proposed a debate on the increase in shootings in the Western Cape.
The Freedom Front Plus’s motion urges the Western Cape government to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of learners, and particularly matriculants during the upcoming exam season.
When the matric exams commence, learners depart from school premises earlier than usual, which increases the likelihood of finding themselves in dangerous situations.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde opposed the motion, however, a move that evoked surprise and concern across the Provincial Parliament, particularly given the frequency and escalation of shootings, especially on the Cape Flats.
The truth is that children from underprivileged communities live in fear every day due to gang violence, with a high likelihood of innocent learners being caught in the crossfire of gangs.
In addition, a learning environment marked by violent crime creates educational inequalities that undermine these learners’ academic prospects.
The premier’s refusal to support the motion is a moral error as it prioritises cost savings over the protection of innocent young lives.
Children’s safety and security should never be used as a political pawn.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep pressuring the provincial government for concrete measures to protect matriculants.
