End of an era for prepaid electricity meters in South Africa | SA News


South African prepaid electricity users can no longer get key change tokens to update their meters if they have not upgraded from the first version of the key revision number (KRN 1).

The prepaid electricity system underwent a significant change towards the end of 2024, when the token identifier (TID) system ran out of range on 24 November.

That is because of a security mechanism built into the system to prevent token reuse, which is keyed to a 24-bit timer that can count fewer than 16.8 million minutes, or just…
