The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) formally approached the Competition Commission to investigate Premier Foods’ intended closure of its fruit processing plant in Tulbagh.
This step does not aim to undermine the mediation process already under way between Premier Foods and stakeholders such as workers and producers. It is, however, an additional step to ensure that the far-reaching consequences of the intended closure are thoroughly investigated and considered.
The intended closure is not a decision that only affects Premier Foods and its employees. It could also deal a serious blow to the plant’s approximately 200 fruit producers. Most of these producers have already concluded three-year contracts for delivering fruits and have, consequently, incurred related costs.
The Freedom Front Plus requested the Commission to determine, among other things, whether the intended closure and the termination of existing contracts have any competition-related implications and, if so, to urgently investigate the possible consequences.
This request demonstrates the Freedom Front Plus’s policy of local economic development, which is a critical cornerstone of a resilient national economy. The party wants to ensure that the entire Tulbagh community is taken into account.
The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the ongoing mediation and the willingness to explore possible solutions.
Premier Foods’ decision should also be seen in light of the broader economic context. The closure of such a large processing plant could severely restrict producers’ access to markets and place thousands of jobs at risk.
As far as the environment is concerned, dumping surplus fruit that cannot be marketed fresh could create a breeding ground for pests.
The Freedom Front Plus calls on the Competition Commission to urgently probe the matter and involve all relevant parties before an irreversible decision is taken.
