The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes The Hawks’ investigation into possible irregularities at City Power in the Johannesburg Metro.

During the multi-party coalition government, of which the Freedom Front Plus was a partner (2016 to 2021), it became evident that City Power was failing to properly maintain Johannesburg’s electricity network.

The party is, therefore, not surprised that The Hawks’ preliminary investigation has revealed abnormal and excessive payments made to certain contractors.

The investigation also found that City Power could have performed the work itself, instead of appointing contractors.

Over the past few years, the quality of workmanship and equipment used to repair and maintain the electricity network have been questioned.

The Freedom Front Plus attributes this state of affairs to a loss of expertise and the procurement of substandard equipment at inflated prices.

The party is also concerned about the upcoming rainy season, which will likely lead to a series of power outages when transformers fail or catch fire.

It is not loadshedding that is crippling the city, but City Power’s failure to ensure the power network functions optimally.

The party will keep a close eye on the investigation and insist that appropriate action be taken against offenders.
