Steps Against Violence on Roads Around Cape Town Airport and Recent Arrests of Suspects Welcomed

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is pleased that its awareness campaign has contributed to motivating the City of Cape Town, SANRAL and the police to address the severe wave of violent crime, attacks and robberies on the roads around Cape Town International Airport – particularly the N1, N2 and R300.

The party particularly welcomes the swift arrest of suspects in recent incidents, including the suspect who attacked an elderly deaf couple with a panga on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2026, on the N1 highway between Canal Walk (Century City) and the M5 off-ramp.

Motorists who assisted the two victims contacted the Freedom Front Plus for help via social media after the police did not take a statement at the scene. The Freedom Front Plus (Councillor Emre Uygun) and staff of the City of Cape Town’s Directorate for Safety and Security personally met with the victims, liaised with the relevant police contacts and took the couple to the Maitland Police Station, where a case docket was opened.

The suspect, still holding the panga, which matched the victims’ description was arrested on the N1 soon after.

In addition, several other arrests have recently been made in connection with similar attacks and robberies on these highways – a positive step forward.

After the Freedom Front Plus insisted on urgent intervention, in a media statement in November 2025, following frequent attacks, the relevant authorities have finally started to take decisive action. This includes deploying additional patrols and Metro Police officers, repairing damaged highway fencing, reactivating broken CCTV cameras and drafting plans for an R180 million security wall along high-risk areas.

The Freedom Front Plus welcomes these steps as a positive start, but the frequency of violent incidents – including robberies, shootings and stone-throwing – clearly shows that much more needs to be done to ensure motorists’ safety when travelling.

The DA-controlled City of Cape Town, SANRAL and the provincial government essentially ignored or shifted the responsibility of addressing this serious problem from one to the other for years. To this day, this so-called “Hell Run” remains a dangerous area.

The tragic murder of Karin van Aardt (64), a retired teacher from Johannesburg, on 5 December 2025 near the Airport, while she was visiting for her grandson’s birthday, put the spotlight back on the crisis. Arrests later followed.

But since then, several other serious incidents have occurred. It is unacceptable; the situation amounts to anarchy, which must not be tolerated.

The Freedom Front Plus once again implores all relevant role players to work together towards an integrated, sustainable solution. The party is ready to help wherever needed, and believes that its major awareness campaign over the past months – which attracted widespread attention in the media and on social media – has already begun to bear fruit.

The Freedom Front Plus will continue its awareness campaign while putting pressure on the authorities to ensure these roads are safe for all motorists – local and visitors from around the world.
