Dear Editor
The DA expresses deep concern over the abrupt resignation of Bongani Mabaso, CEO of the State IT Agency (SITA), after just eight months in office. This year, SITA experienced significant instability, including the controversial firing of six board members in July, allegedly due to their disagreement with the decision to raise Mabaso’s remuneration from R3.5 million to R4.5 million.
Despite Gungubele’s interim board appointments, issues persisted, leading to a strike by SITA employees in October. This labour dispute impacted not only SITA but also various Government Departments, including Home Affairs and Social Development.
In a letter obtained by the DA, Mabaso cites “instability at the senior management level” and interference by board members, pointing to a contravention of good corporate governance. Prior to Mabaso, SITA operated without a CEO since 2019 and was placed under an administrator.
The DA calls on Minister Gungubele to promptly address allegations surrounding Mabaso’s remuneration increase and the dismissal of SITA board members. Urgent attention is also sought for Mabaso’s resignation and his allegations outlined to the Board Chairperson.
Additionally, the DA announces its intention to write to the Chairperson of the Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies, urging SITA to appear before the Committee at the earliest convenience.
The DA firmly believes in accountability, transparency and good governance for the benefit of all South Africans.
