Hout Bay, Cape Town – HouseZero, the South African design-led architecture and construction company specialising in fully off-grid residential systems, has announced a new sustainable housing development in Hout Bay, Cape Town. The project delivers a completely grid-independent living environment combined with contemporary, design-forward homes.

Each residence in the development is designed to operate independently from municipal electricity and water infrastructure. The homes integrate solar power generation, battery storage, rainwater harvesting, and on-site water recycling, creating a self-sufficient residential environment with reduced operational costs and long-term resilience.

Unlike conventional green developments that treat sustainability as an add-on, HouseZero has embedded energy, water, and environmental systems directly into the architectural design. The homes feature open-plan layouts, clean modern lines, expansive glazing, and strong indoor-outdoor connections, aligned with the coastal character of Hout Bay.

“This project reflects HouseZero’s core philosophy that sustainability should be invisible but fundamental,”says Thea S, architect from the HouseZero design team. “By integrating energy independence, water security, and spatial quality from the earliest design stages, we were able to create homes that feel contemporary and luxurious while remaining completely self-sufficient.”

The development responds to increasing demand for future-proof housing solutions amid rising energy costs, water scarcity, and ongoing infrastructure challenges across South Africa. By eliminating reliance on the grid, the project offers homeowners greater autonomy, predictability, and long-term value retention.

Located close to Hout Bay’s beaches, village amenities, and major transport routes, the development combines natural surroundings with urban accessibility. According to HouseZero, the project forms part of a broader shift toward decentralised, resilient residential environments that prioritise both design quality and sustainability.

Further information regarding release phases and availability will be announced in due course.
