The stunning indigenous gardens of Renishaw Hills in Scottburgh provided a perfect backdrop for a special event celebrating the visionary work of renowned botanist, landscaper, and author Dr Elsa Pooley. On Thursday, 20 March, guests gathered for the launch of her latest book, South African Indigenous Garden Plants: The Gardener’s Guide. This beautifully illustrated, encyclopaedic book was co-authored by Elsa, Geoff Nichols (a renowned horticulturist, indigenous garden designer, natural historian, and author of several books), and Andrew Hankey (a highly experienced botanical horticulturist). This was a decade-long passion project for all three contributors, none of whom benefit financially from the sales. Through sponsorships, they’ve managed to make this 3kg book more affordable for the public, with the content covering an incredible 10% of South Africa’s 24 000+ flora showcasing the country’s incredible biodiversity, with a specific focus on plants ideal for local gardens. Throughout the event – which was also attended by leading South African horticulturist Keith Kirsten – the authors shared her wealth of botanical knowledge, offering essential tips on plant selection, landscaping, and garden maintenance. This also marked the launch of Botanical Bounty of the Pondoland Centre of Endemism by Renishaw Hills residents Kate and Graham Grieve, co-written with Dirk Bellstedt. Both books celebrated the rich biodiversity of the country. The KZN South Coast, in particular, is a region renowned for its natural beauty and conservation efforts. Speaking at the launch, Elsa said: “We’ve produced the kind of book that the three of us would like to use. It’s really user-friendly, the text is short, there are lots of beautiful pictures, and it works. We’ve already had such an incredible response to the book.” She commended the team behind Renishaw Hills, paying particular thanks to local horticulturalist Amanda Maphumulo for her help in bringing the estate’s gardens to life: “It’s such a privilege to be here at Renishaw Hills with everyone from this area. The plan was always for Renishaw Hills to be an indigenous estate, and when you buy here, you get a garden with your house, which I think is remarkable!”
