Dear Editor
The DA has urgently written to the Minister of Police, pressing for answers to unresolved questions surrounding the conduct of senior officials implicated in the murder of Charl Kinnear to ensure that justice is served for those involved in this tragic case.
This comes after the declassification of a report by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). This report sheds light on serious allegations of corruption and obstruction of justice within the South African Police Service.
Over the past months, the DA has actively pursued oversight avenues to investigate the actions of senior officials tied to this case, including those in Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Gang Unit, and the Provincial Commissioner’s office. The DA has even posed Parliamentary questions to the Police Minister, which remain unanswered.
During a recent briefing to the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale and IPID’s Executive Director, Ms. Ntlatseng, faced questioning from the DA on the lack of communication and transparency in the investigation. The DA demanded a written explanation for the delays, and soon after, Ms. Ntlatseng announced a media briefing on the matter.
While it is regrettable that four years have passed to reach this point, the DA remains committed to its oversight role. While it continues to call for justice for Lt. Col. Kinnear, the DA respects the rule of law and will allow the criminal justice system to follow its course.
Regards
Nicholas Gotsell MP
DA Member on the Select Committee on Security and Justice
