Joburg fails to open public swimming pools, again

36 pools were supposed to be open from 1 September

Groups came from far and wide to enjoy the Zoo Lake swimming pool on a hot Friday afternoon. It is one of the few public pools that are open in Johannesburg. Photos: Seth Thorne

The City of Johannesburg had planned to open 36 of its 57 pools by 1 September, the start of the swimming season. More than a month later, only a few pools are open.
Repairs and maintenance have been delayed, and the City only started considering tenders for pool chemicals mid-September.
At some pools, residents have stepped in to raise funds for renovations and to keep the pools open.
