Komati power station repurposing on PCC agenda

The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) is expected to convene its 12th Ordinary Quarterly meeting in Johannesburg at Constitution Hill Precinct tomorrow.

The PCC said Friday’s meeting will consider the final draft for adoption of the Komati Power Station decommission and repurposing process report and review the progress on its work.

The power station was decommissioned in October last year with plans to repurpose it into a renewable energy site with 150MW of photovoltaic energy, 70MW wind generating capacity, 150MW of Battery Energy Storage System and synchronous condenser.

In November last year, Eskom announced that the World Bank approved a $497 million concessional loan facility to the power utility for the repurposing project.

The PCC described other issues on the agenda for the upcoming meeting

“The meeting will also receive a progress report on the status of the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JETIP), which comes at the back of the latest findings of the PCC commissioned Climate Finance Landscape Report and the mooted Just Transition Finance Mechanism (JTFM) which the commission will consider for a release for public comments.

“Key on the Commission agenda is the issues of climate awareness and misinformation and to this end the Commission will also receive and consider the findings of the first ever South African Social Attitudes Survey by the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) focusing on “Attitudes towards Climate Change and the Just Transition” as well as a report on the anticipated impact of El Nino on South Africa’s medium-term weather forecast by the South African Weather Services,” the Commission said.
