The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in partnership with the Wireless Female Network (WFN) team up to launch first Period Art gallery in South Africa and on the African continent.
The Wireless Female Network and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) are thrilled by the concept of a Period Art gallery as this further dismantles the glass ceiling in Menstrual health Management.
The Period Art space is a game changer for South Africa as it speaks to eight of the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030 while aligning with the fundamentals of inclusion and in bridging gender equality. The period gallery at UKZN is called “The Great Hall of RED” and is one of the many steps taken to create Menstrual Health Ecosystems.
The ongoing partnership between WFN and UKZN is to ensure continuity towards achieving menstrual equity. Menstrual health is often seen as an uncomfortable and taboo topic and within the creative learning space Period Art is one of the subjects both taught and encouraged under the WFN framework.
South Africa has eleven official languages and quite a few unofficial ones too, we are indeed a melting pot of different cultures. When a girl child comes of age the celebration is governed by tradition, culture and religion, and the aspect of heritage makes her journey to womanhood special. The concept of a Menstrual art gallery will eloquently showcase this journey. Menstrual Health is a human rights and health issue, and impacts us all.
The purpose of the Period Art gallery is to foster collaboration, unlearning and open conversations to destigmatize taboos surrounding period health while aligning with the cultural lens of our rainbow nation.
“We are thrilled about this partnership with WFN as it presents a fantastic opportunity to shed light on the enduring challenges women encounter surrounding menstrual health. This exhibition will be instrumental in tackling menstrual stigma head-on and advocating for a more enlightened perspective on menstruation. Moreover, it will offer a platform to amplify the diverse experiences of women from various racial and cultural backgrounds. We deeply appreciate WFN’s collaboration in this important initiative, and together, we can make a meaningful impact in promoting menstrual health awareness.” said Ms Normah Zondo, Executive Director of Corporate Relations at UKZN.

Subliminal perception is a subject that virtually no one wants to believe exists, and — if it does exist — they much less believe that it has any practical application. . . . The techniques are in widespread use by media, advertising and public relations agencies, industrial and commercial corporations, and by the Federal government itself. – Wilson Bryan Key

Capitalism, the ogre of those protesting Wall Street, has suffered a public relations crisis in the wake of the global economic collapse. But any remedy to the systemic corruption that led to the collapse should not displace recognition that capitalism creates wealth. Capitalism, and no other economic system, has raised millions from poverty around the world. – Kathleen Parker
