MEC Nqatha praises police for arresting man behind police officer’s attack 

 Transport and Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has welcomed the arrest of a man accused of attacking a police officer in Mandela Park on Friday. 

The Community Safety spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa confirmed that a 45-year-old man was apprehended following the incident involving a 42-year-old Warrenton officer attached to the National Intervention Unit (NIU).

 “Undoubtedly, members of the National Intervention Unit are making significant progress in crime hotspots such as Mthatha and Gqeberha. We hope this arrest will lead to further apprehensions of those who continue to terrorise our communities. Once again, we wish to remind criminals that police will not tolerate attacks on their members,” Nqatha said. 

Komisa detailed that the officer was driving to work when the suspect began shooting at him. The officer responded by stopping his vehicle and returning fire, prompting the suspect to flee on foot. Police responded promptly and, after an investigation, arrested the suspect.

“The warrant officer was unharmed during the incident, whereas the suspect sustained injuries and was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment,” Komisa added.
