The hit kykNET series MegaBoere, proudly sponsored by Santam, is back with a brand-new season starting Monday, 13 October at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). This season is presented by Marco Botha, a well-known agricultural journalist and media personality with a deep passion for farming and the people behind the industry. His experience and insight bring a fresh dynamic to the series, connecting viewers to the inspiring stories of farmers who are transforming and shaping the future of agriculture in South Africa.
What is a Mega Farmer?
It’s not necessarily about how many hectares of land or how much money farmers have, but about a mindset and a unique way of thinking and doing. Mega Farmers are visionary individuals – entrepreneurs, risk managers, and problem-solvers – who tackle the challenges of farming with courage, innovation, and a strong support network. They have the ability to turn setbacks into opportunities and change the playing field with creativity and ingenuity.
A decade of inspiration
This year marks ten years since the first season was broadcast. Since then, viewers have been introduced to nearly 80 Mega Farmers. In this season, audiences will meet 13 new faces – each with a story that inspires and brings hope.
What makes the new season different?
The previous season aired in 2020, during the challenges of Covid-19. Today, many of the farmers are stronger than ever, with new plans, strategies, and success stories to share. In a world weighed down by negativity, MegaBoere brings hopeful and positive stories to the screen – stories that show how ingenuity, adaptability, and belief in the future can drive an entire industry forward.
Themes and trends
Viewers can look forward to a wide variety of farming enterprises – from a flower farm and a horse stud to major citrus, cattle, and banana operations. Farms beyond South Africa’s borders will also be explored. The role of younger generations is clear, with new ideas and technologies that older generations proudly support and encourage. Family farms remain the cornerstone of South African agriculture, while the fresh energy of the new generation takes enterprises to new heights and greater sustainability.
Diversity and unique stories
Each episode offers a new adventure – from citrus farms in Kirkwood to cattle ranching in Namibia and even a pig farm in KwaZulu-Natal. It is also notable how more women today are taking on leadership roles on farms. The diversity of people, cultures, and industries highlighted adds color to the new season, but the core focus remains the same: the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership of Mega Farmers.
A strong focus on stories
With new presenter Marco Botha and experienced content director Pieter Steyn at the helm, the upcoming season promises to bring viewers deep, honest, and authentic stories. The production team traveled more than 54,000 km to capture breathtaking footage – from sunrises over orchards to full moons across expansive farmland.
Why watch?
MegaBoere is more than just a glimpse into agriculture – it is a celebration of people who face challenges with courage and creativity. It reminds us that farming is a mindset: to make plans in difficult times, and in good times, to build the future.
MegaBoere premieres Monday, 13 October at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144) and will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
