Johannesburg, South Africa –The highly anticipated Moja Chess Extravaganza 2025 will take place from 26 April to 1 May 2025 in Johannesburg, promising one of the most competitive and inclusive chess tournaments in Southern Africa.

Now in its eighth year, the event has grown from a local club open into a continental showcase of chess excellence. Organised by Moja Chess Solutions NPC, the tournament is driven by the theme “Pushing Boundaries”, symbolising its mission to empower chess players of all levels and foster international connections through the game.

This year’s event already boasts over 60 international participants from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Angola, Malawi, as well as players from France and Turkey.

With a prize fund exceeding R200,000, Moja 2025 will feature several sections tailored to different playing strengths and categories:
Prestige Section: For players rated above 2000 Elo, Section B: For players below 2000 Elo, Section C: For players below 1600 Elo, Ladies Section: A platform to promote women in chess & Junior Sections D, E, and F: Categorised by age group.

“The Moja Chess Extravaganza is more than just a tournament. It’s a developmental platform designed to identify and support future chess champions from Southern Africa,” says Dr. Jabulani Mokoena, Founder of Moja Chess Solutions and Tournament Director.

“We’re committed to giving our players opportunities to earn FIDE norms, experience international-level competition, and grow through community.”

Established in 2018 as the Moja Chess Club Open, the tournament was renamed in 2022 to reflect its broader mission and reach. Since then, it has become a landmark on the African chess calendar, known for its professionalism, inclusion, and focus on development.

The event will feature: Electronic boards and live streaming, Fair Play protocols, Parallel training and development seminars, FIDE Arbiters Seminar, FIDE Preparation of Teachers Course & Swiss Manager Course.

“This tournament combines high-level competition with a real sense of belonging,” says a past participant. “It’s one of the few places where you can compete, grow, and connect with chess lovers from across Africa and beyond.”

Moja Chess Extravaganza 2025 is expected to draw hundreds of players, coaches, officials, and spectators — making it an excellent opportunity for partners and sponsors seeking visibility across Africa’s growing chess community.

Myth: It’s not really advertising, but it’s basically the same as marketing. Fact: Advertising, marketing, and PR often work together, but they’re all distinct fields! In the age of social media and content creation, the line between PR and marketing has been blurred – but it still exists. PR is definitely a piece of the marketing puzzle for most businesses, and confusion can sometimes arise when press releases appear alongside marketing campaigns or ads on Twitter and Facebook. The real difference is that marketing focuses on promoting a company’s products and services, with a more direct line to driving sales and revenue. PR’s impact, on the other hand, is less directly quantifiable; it primarily focuses on building a company’s profile and reputation. While they do work in conjunction with one another, it’s important to take into consideration the goals, strategies, and tactics that distinguish the two.
