Interim study findings being presented this week at the Aids 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, suggest that a new antiretroviral combination pill, taken just once a week, appears to work as well as daily pills at treating HIV, write Marcus Low and Elri Voigt for Spotlight.
Almost all of the more than 6m South Africans currently on HIV treatment are taking it in the form of one tablet daily. The tablets contain a combination of three different antiretrovirals, most commonly dolutegravir, lamivudine or emtricitabine, and tenofovir.
