Protesters demand RDP houses after waiting decades

Gauteng residents in informal settlements say repeated requests for answers on housing from the Premier’s office have gone unanswered

Dozens of residents from informal settlements across Gauteng marched to Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s office in Johannesburg on Friday, demanding answers about their housing applications. Some arrived with proof of applying for government housing. Photos: Kimberly Mutandiro

Gauteng residents marched to Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s office, demanding answers about RDP housing applications. Some have waited since 1996.
Protesters said numerous memoranda and a petition with about 100 signatures had all gone unanswered.
Some residents said they found other people living in houses allocated to them. Others are still waiting for homes.
The Premier’s office said the matter had been referred to the Gauteng human settlements department.
