RIP Professor Brian O’Connell

27 August 2024 by Guest

Dear Editor

The DA is profoundly saddened by the news of the passing of Prof Brian O’Connell, former Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). A dedicated leader and visionary, Prof O’Connell served the university with distinction from 2001 to 2014, navigating challenging times with wisdom and resilience.

As a student at UWC in the 1960s, Prof O’Connell returned to his alma mater to lead with passion and commitment, transforming the institution and improving lives. His tireless efforts to address staff retrenchments, financial vulnerabilities, and academic leadership losses have left an indelible mark.

Prof O’Connell’s legacy extends far beyond his tenure, inspiring generations of students, staff, and the broader community. His unwavering dedication to social justice, equality, and academic excellence has created a lasting impact.

We mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, leader, and champion of higher education. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Prof Brian O’Connell – your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.

Regards

Mathlodi Maseko MP
DA Spokesperson on Higher Education
