The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) submitted a formal complaint and ultimatum to the municipal management of the ANC-controlled Thaba Chweu Local Municipality as well as to Mpumalanga’s Departments of Health and Cooperative Governance (COGTA) regarding the ongoing sewage crisis plaguing the Soli Deo Gloria Care Centre and the surrounding community in Lydenburg for more than two years.

The situation reached a critical point with the submission of evidence showing that children are being exposed to raw sewage, including an incident where a child fell into contaminated water and required medical treatment.

Clearly, the existing sewerage infrastructure does not have the capacity to accommodate the nearby TVET college and other institutions.

The Municipality’s use of temporary repairs is just a waste of taxpayers’ money, as overflows usually recur within days.

The sewage crisis is further compounded by a sinkhole near the municipal offices, creating a hazardous environment. Residents are forced to risk their health and safety in an effort to access basic services.

The Freedom Front Plus insisted on written feedback within seven working days outlining a permanent solution, a specified date when repairs will commence and a clear timeline for completion.

The party also requested clarity on available funding and, should funding not be available, what alternative financing or infrastructure grants could be utilised.

It also demanded comprehensive details of planned upgrades, along with immediate measures to protect children and the public from health risks.

It is, furthermore, crucial to conduct a public health inspection of the affected area.

The time for making excuses is over. The ANC should not be allowed to remain in power while basic services deteriorate into a health crisis threatening the lives of children and communities.

Voters are being presented with a golden opportunity to register and oust the ANC from the Thaba Chweu Council at the polls – residents should vote for dignity and safe living conditions to be restored.
