Steenhuisen Takes Action

12 August 2025 by Guest

Dear editor

In light of the 30% tariff the United States has placed on South African exports, it is encouraging that our agricultural sector is rapidly diversifying its markets. This important work is being led by Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen, whose efforts are helping to protect farmers, safeguard jobs, and keep our economy resilient in the face of global trade shocks.

Under Steenhuisen’s leadership, South Africa has opened new markets for:

  • Avocados in China, Japan and India
  • Maize in Japan and India
  • Beef and lamb in Iran
  • Table grapes in the Philippines and Vietnam
  • Citrus in Vietnam

Today, Steenhuisen announced five new stone fruit deals with China – plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots and prunes – to be signed at the G20. These agreements will give farmers new buyers and cushion the blow of the US tariffs.

At the same time, Steenhuisen is working closely with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition to keep the US market open. A revised proposal that addresses US concerns has been submitted, and key barriers for poultry, blueberries and pork have already been resolved – with shipments from the US arriving soon.

This two-pronged approach of protecting our US market share while opening new opportunities in Asia and the Middle East shows the decisive and practical leadership that is needed in times of uncertainty.

Steenhuisen’s focus on aligning biosecurity standards, speeding up export certification, and strengthening trade links is ensuring South African farmers stay globally competitive.

The DA commends Minister Steenhuisen’s tireless efforts to protect rural livelihoods, secure jobs, and open new doors for South African agriculture in this challenging environment.

Regards

Willie Aucamp MP
DA National Spokesperson and Spokesperson on Agriculture
