African Mining Week to Connect Investors With New Prospects as Global Gold Demand Skyrockets

As global gold prices continue to reach record levels and demand surging, the upcoming African Mining Week Conference - The Most Influential Mining Conference in Africa - taking place on October 14–16 in Cape Town will connect global investors with investment opportunities across Africa's burgeoning gold value chain. The event will host the Gold Forum, bringing together private and public sector stakeholders from Africa's leading gold-producing countries alongside international investors to discuss the future of gold mining, trading and value addition.

With reduced reliance on the U.S. dollar and rising central bank purchases expected to keep gold demand elevated, prices are projected to remain above $5,000 per ounce through 2026. In response, African producers are accelerating project development to capitalize on these market trends and drive GDP growth. Central banks alone are forecasted to acquire around 755 tons of gold.

Ghana – Africa's largest gold producer – aims to increase output to 6.5 million ounces from six million in 2025, through the acceleration of projects such as the Cardinal Namdini, Ahafo North, Black Volta and Bibiani mines, alongside artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) operations.

Similarly, Mali, Africa's second-largest gold producer, seeks to increase production beyond the current 60 tons per year. Recent license renewals and grants - including Toubani Resources' Kobada Mine, Barrick Mining's Loulo-Gounkoto Mine, B2Gold's Fekola Mine expansion, Compass Gold's Massala Mine and Roscan Gold's exploration permits - reflect a commitment to collaborate with global investors to unlock its gold potential.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) also aims to increase gold exports to 15–18 metric tons in 2026. Meanwhile, several projects across the continent have also reached final investment decisions, highlighting Africa's focus on expanding gold production. Against this backdrop, the Gold Forum at AMW will serve as a key venue for connecting investors with upstream investment opportunities across the continent.

The Forum will also spotlight efforts to enhance local beneficiation to maximize the value of Africa's gold resources. These include the DRC's partnership with Lunga Mining to launch a pilot gold refinery in Kalemie. Ghana's Gold Coast also partnered with South Africa's Rand Refinery to enhance local gold processing in Ghana. Egypt is collaborating with the African Export-Import Bank to finance and develop an integrated gold value chain in the country while Mali is developing a refinery in partnership with Russian investors. Amidst this rapid expansion of Africa's downstream infrastructure, AMW will provide a platform to discuss best strategies for unlocking investment to support the continent's local beneficiation agenda.

In addition, African gold producers are increasingly implementing programs to formalize and empower ASGM operations, contributing to sector stability and growth. For instance, Ghana is leveraging its newly established Ghana Gold Board to support ASGM formalization. Meanwhile, the DRC is leveraging its ASGM Empowerment AXIS Program - a blockchain-based gold tokenization project – and the Goldconnect program - designed to formalize, secure and digitize artisanal gold mining. Coming into this picture, the AMW Gold Forum will connect investors with opportunities arising from Africa's ASGM formalization initiatives.

AMW serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2026 conference from October 12-16 in Cape Town. Service as a Service

RS South Africa

By Viv Muthan Pr Eng, Head of Export Sales and Operations.

Digitalisation has brought and continues to bring sweeping advancements in how companies go to market and how customers engage with brands. Agentic AI is now poised to disrupt even these developments, creating a scramble among organisations anxious to invest in the “next big thing” for fear of being left behind. Yet history has shown that the more speed becomes associated with winning, the more companies blur the line between operational effectiveness and strategy, copying the same best practices in pursuit of advantage and compromising the very uniqueness they once stood for.

The values companies were founded on often fall away in this race to jump on the bandwagon of the newest technology trend. As digital tools proliferate, strategic differentiation collapses into imitation cycles where organisations appear different in branding but identical in execution. However, beneath the surface of today's digital revolution is an even more important structural dynamic which is often overlooked: technology accelerates competitive convergence. In hyper‑competitive markets which are characterised by rapid innovation, collapsing entry barriers, and continuous technological shifts, advantages erode quickly. As organisations adopt the same tools, platforms, and automated customer experiences, differentiation becomes increasingly difficult to sustain. Digitalisation enhances efficiency, but it also amplifies sameness.

This is the paradox of the modern competitive landscape where technology expands possibilities on the one hand but compresses uniqueness on the other. Many organisations misinterpret this environment as one where speed itself equals strategy. They invest in more automation, more digital tools, and more system integration at more pace, believing that motion is progress and more equals better. Yet these actions, while valuable, remain squarely within the domain of operational effectiveness. Porter (1996) reminds us that strategy is about what you choose to do as a company, what sets of activities support that position (fit) and, possibly most importantly, what you choose not to do. Digital transformation accelerates the impact of these strategic choices. Technologies shape what organisations prioritise and enable certain behaviours while constraining others. Over time, this subtly shifts how companies make sense of themselves, how they coordinate, and how they engage customers. By spending more on getting faster there is potential for elements of the customer journey to fade into the background, particularly the messy and less easy to control human elements.

That is where and why service, especially human service, has become even more strategically significant. In a digital ecosystem where technologies diffuse rapidly and imitation cycles shorten, the only dimension of the firm that remains difficult to replicate is its humanity. Platforms can be cloned, algorithms can be trained, and interfaces can be mimicked but human discernment, contextual understanding, empathetic listening, and relational trust cannot be reverse‑engineered at scale.

Technology delivers speed.
Humans deliver meaning.

This is why RS, despite being a forefront contender in the space of digitally led and data‑driven e-commerce businesses, continues to invest deliberately in people as a core part of its customer experience. RS recognises that digitalisation is about augmenting and enhancing human capability rather replacing it. E‑commerce platforms handle the transactions, the complicated back end that lends itself to automation, but people handle the relationships. Automation reduces friction, but humans resolve complexity. AI identifies patterns, but people interpret significance.

Human service anchors the organisational values, stabilises behaviour in moments of uncertainty, and protects the customer's experience across the system. It is the part of the firm that remains recognisably “itself” even as technology evolves. In this sense, “Service as a Service” is more than satire. It might be seen as a strategic assertion: In a transient, digitally accelerated competitive landscape, humanity becomes the last defensible frontier of differentiation. RS embraces digital transformation as an enabler of a higher quality omni-channel customer journey. In an industrial world where customers often operate under pressure, RS is looking at ways to combine speed, technology and humanity to create value that endures even as the technological environment continues to shift.

City of Cape Town Backs Converge Africa 2026 to Accelerate Digital Commerce Growth

Location: Business
VUKA Group

As Africa's digital economy moves towards a multi-billion-dollar opportunity, cities are increasingly becoming the catalysts for innovation, investment and cross-border trade. In this context, the support of the City of Cape Town for Converge Africa 2026 signals a strategic commitment to positioning Cape Town as a leading hub for digital commerce on the continent.

Taking place from 4 - 6 May 2026 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Converge Africa brings together the continent's most influential leaders across eCommerce, fintech, payments, logistics, digital marketing and cybersecurity.

At its core, the event is driven by a unifying industry imperative:
“Frictionless digital commerce. Transacting seamlessly, without borders.”

A city enabling the future of commerce

The City of Cape Town's role as a supporting partner reflects a broader vision to attract investment, enable innovation and strengthen the region's position within Africa's digital economy.

As digital commerce continues to evolve, cities that create the right environment for collaboration between corporates, start-ups and global technology providers will lead the next phase of growth. Cape Town has increasingly established itself as one of those environments.

By supporting Converge Africa, the City is not only endorsing the event, but actively contributing to driving international and regional business into the Western Cape and showcasing Cape Town as a gateway for digital trade into Africa.

“The City eagerly welcomes the return of Converge Africa to Cape Town. Communities all across the continent are exceptionally active in the e-commerce space, whether as businesses or consumers. Cape Town is the ideal place for this gathering and its engagements between tech entrepreneurs and thought-leaders in the public and private sector,” said Alderman James Vos, the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.

Converging the full digital commerce ecosystem

Converge Africa is designed as a fully integrated ecosystem, bringing together more than 1,400 attendees from over 700 organisations.

The event spans five core pillars: Payments & Fintech, eCommerce, Digital Marketing, Fulfilment & Logistics, and Digital Security.

This convergence reflects a fundamental shift in how commerce operates today. No part of the customer journey exists in isolation, and the ability to connect systems, platforms and experiences is now central to growth.

Converge Africa combines a dynamic exhibition floor, curated content stages, hands-on workshops and high-value networking opportunities, creating a platform where insight, innovation and business connection come together in one place.

Addressing Africa's real commerce challenges

Across the continent, the barriers to digital commerce are no longer about access alone, but about reducing friction. These include payment acceptance gaps, cross-border complexity, fraud and trust challenges, and fragmented customer experiences.

Converge Africa provides a platform where these challenges are not only discussed, but actively addressed through practical insight, partnerships and solutions.

A platform for leadership and collaboration

The 2026 edition features a high-calibre speaker line-up from leading global and African organisations.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Ajay Moti, Head of Global Card Networks, Booking.com
  • Hannes Wessels, General Manager South Africa, Binance
  • Kerissa Varma, Chief Security Advisor Africa, Microsoft
  • Joshua Suckerman, Digital Product Manager: API Marketplace & Payments, Absa
  • Zain Naidoo, Head of Digital Marketing, Dis-Chem Pharmacies
  • Grant Paul Roy, Chief CX Officer, Superbalist

These voices are complemented by leaders from organisations such as Pick n Pay, Nedbank, Vodacom, Spur Group and Kimberly-Clark, offering a multi-dimensional perspective on the future of commerce in Africa.

Driving impact beyond the event

Converge Africa is not just a conference; it is a platform for economic enablement.

Through curated networking, valuable meeting introductions and interactive workshops, the event is designed to facilitate real business outcomes, partnerships and investment opportunities.

The support of the City of Cape Town reinforces the importance of this platform in shaping the region's digital economy and ensuring that local and international businesses can connect, collaborate and scale.

A shared ambition for growth

As Africa's commerce landscape continues to evolve, the role of cities, industry leaders and enabling platforms becomes increasingly interconnected.

Converge Africa provides the platform. Cape Town provides the environment. Together, they represent a shared ambition to position the region at the forefront of Africa's digital commerce growth story.

Emirates Completes More Than 40 Travel Rehearsals for Youth With Autism Globally, Easing Travel Anxiety for More Than 250 Families

Location: Business
The Emirates Group

Emirates (http://www.Emirates.com) has continued its commitment to making travel more accessible for all, by successfully arranging bespoke Emirates Travel Rehearsals across more than 40 cities globally over the past year. With more than 250 families positively impacted, Emirates Travel Rehearsals are designed to support children and young adults with autism, allowing them to practice the journey through the airport to prepare for real flights - easing travel anxiety and empowering them to fly with more confidence.

After the initial Emirates Travel Rehearsals in Dubai resulted in positive feedback from families, schools and autism organisations; the Emirates Office of Accessibility & Inclusion formulated the travel rehearsal into an official programme, to be rolled out across its global network.

Since April 2025, Emirates' Airport Services teams have come together to arrange more than 40 of these travel rehearsals across airports like Accra, Athens, Bali, Bangalore, Barcelona, Bologna, Brussels, Cairo, Christchurch, Da Nang, Delhi, Dubai, Dublin, Durban, Düsseldorf, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guangzhou, Hanoi, Harare, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, Luanda, Madrid, Mauritius, Milan, Newcastle, Nice, Orlando, Oslo, Paris, Peshawar, Port Luis, Rome, Stansted, Stockholm, Sydney, Toronto, Trivandrum, Venice and Vienna.

More than 35,000 Emirates staff have been trained to support customers with autism and can help facilitate travel, and Travel Rehearsals. Emirates teams work very closely with airport authorities and partners to make sure each rehearsal is a supportive and successful experience for the families.

Sami Aqil Abdullah, Senior Vice President, Emirates Airport Services Outstation & Business Support, commented;

‘The Emirates Travel Rehearsal programme has been a resounding success across 6 continents, with impressive collaboration and drive shown by all stakeholders, from our own Emirates teams to our airport partners, and the parents and teachers who trusted us to support their children. We will continue to amplify this success with more locations, more teams involved, and more families positively impacted and empowered to fly with confidence.'

What is an Emirates Travel Rehearsal?

As the world's first autism certified airline, Emirates is aware that for many families, international air travel is a highly challenging experience, or something to be avoided completely due to the high level of sensory stimuli that is involved. A survey on AutismTravel.com revealed that 78% of families are hesitant to travel or visit new locations for these reasons. For many people with autism, planning and predictability is critical – and an airport represents a world of unknown processes and stimuli.

Emirates Travel Rehearsals are a purposeful community collaboration and learning exercise arranged by Emirates, with the support of international airport teams, Border Control and Security teams, and schools and centres for autism based all around the world. The travel rehearsals empower neurodivergent people to participate in a real-time journey through the airport, practicing the actions of checking in, dropping baggage, going through immigration and security, and experiencing the hustle and bustle of retail and dining areas. While familiarising themselves with the airport, participants are also issued mock boarding passes and given the chance to meet the many uniformed staff encountered along the way. In some airports, Emirates' teams managed to arrange access to real aircraft for the children and young adults.

Positive feedback from participants

Now on an international level - parents, therapists, teachers, young adults and children involved in the travel rehearsals so far have reported to Emirates that the experience has been invaluable in helping them have a safe and successful flight, by offering the comfort of preparation and familiarity, as well as trained staff to support.

“The relief experienced when institutions like Emirates have considered children with neurological differences in their operational strategies! To know a parent is welcomed with massive support during travels is such a beautiful feeling. It's like a road to freedom for my child.” From an Autism Center founder and parent, Accra.

“Now I am not afraid anymore! Maybe we can fly again next year. Before it was terrible. But now I can leave my fears somewhere else.” From Noah in Dusseldorf, 13 years old.

“A real highlight of the day was watching the Emirates A350 arrive on stand, with the Captains waving to the children - a moment that sparked huge excitement. By the end of the evening, smiles were everywhere, and the atmosphere was filled with pride and joy. The children headed home with their bags they had “checked in,” filled with Emirates goodies, making the experience even more memorable. It was an incredibly rewarding day, and we're grateful to everyone who took part and supported this.”  From an Autism Group Leader, Edinburgh.

“It is heartwarming to see and feel that in this busy world, there is still time taken to think of those who need just a little extra care. Thanks to this experience, our child can finally form a real picture of what to expect from an air‑travel holiday, because with explanations alone, he simply cannot imagine it. We found it incredibly fun and very helpful to experience this together with our son! Thank you!” From a Parent in Brussels.

“Interesting! I was allowed to control the baggage belt. Everything was great. Especially the picnic room (lounge), the weapon control (security), the aircraft, just everything!” From Oskar in Dusseldorf, 7 years old.

“Thank you for yesterday's experience. From what participants have said, I think it couldn't have been better, Mario is still saying that it was the best day of his life.” Parent from Fundación Friends, Barcelona.

“The effort that Emirates put into creating more awareness, understanding, and sensitivity towards people with an invisible disability deserves the highest appreciation. Your approach shows insight, respect, and genuine commitment, making the world a better place and the lives of people with disabilities more liveable. It is inspiring to see how much care and attention you put into this. Hopefully, other airlines will follow your example, and awareness for people with disabilities will continue to grow. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience.” From an Autism Group leader in Brussels.

“Unusual, I have never been to an airport. Very strange bus, it had doors on both sides. Cockpit was very cool! I was surprised to receive a present, I was very happy! Everything was unusual but fine and I could understand everything what was explained.” From Erik in Dusseldorf, 19 years old.

‘I was buzzing with excitement as the day approached with my students. Emirates' team were incredibly welcoming and supportive, going above and beyond to make our travel experience both exciting and comfortable. From sensory-friendly spaces to tailored support, every detail was thoughtful. We had so much fun with the staff they truly understood us and were thrilled to have us. Thanks for making it a memorable day'. From a Class Teacher in Accra.

“The experience you've given us is invaluable. We continue to be overwhelmed by the welcome we received. We loved all the details and preparation of the tickets at check-in, controls, boarding, and meeting the crew. We consider it a very significant step forward. The boys and girls came back very happy and after a week they are still remembering and talking about the visit. The feedback from families has also been very positive.” Representative from the Fundación Aucavi, Madrid.

“Thank you can feel so light at times like these. To think of our children with autism was such an honor for families. You unpacked travel aspirations they have, their desired destinations. One parent said they never ever asked their son where he would like to visit thinking he knows no destinations.” Representative from the Regional Development Office for Autism, South Africa

“Thank you, Emirates. It helped us a lot that we could go through the check-in process all the way to boarding the plane (the problem for us was/is the transportation on the passenger bridge, but now we know that it'll be fine for our child too). Special thanks for your hospitality, and for the patience of Emirates staff. Our little boy had a great desire to board a plane, we returned home enriched with positive experiences. He also went to school today in the hat he received.” Parent from Hungary

“I haven't travelled in ten years out of fear for my child. After this experience, I feel more confident and hope to plan a trip with him.” Parent from Angola

“A million thanks for organizing, your team was incredibly professional and kind. My gratitude to the crew member who showed Nore around, it made his day! He was also over the moon with the goodie bag he received, his smile got bigger and bigger as we reached home. You really did an amazing job when he finished his day by raising his arms and shouted: “I love being an autist”!” Parent of Nore from Oslo.

“It was more than an airport experience. It was a gesture of respect, care, and recognition of everyone's right to belonging, to travel, and to live fully. Each smile, each achievement, and each emotional glance from our little ones and their families revealed the true meaning of inclusion: creating safe, welcoming, and accessible spaces for everyone.” Doctor from Kuzola Mona Children Development Centre, Angola.

“Wow what an experience you provided our students on Friday. As a teacher of students with specialist needs for over 20 years this was one of the best things I have attended. Everyone commented on the care and attention from the whole Emirates team and the ground crew at Christchurch airport. We now have families who feel confident to give travel a go! Emirates aircraft model now has a new home, at the school reception.” Teacher from Pītau-Allenvale School, Christchurch.

Emirates' continuous support for neurodiverse customers

Emirates will continue to arrange Travel Rehearsals across its global network throughout 2026, inviting more schools and centres to participate.

Emirates' range of sensory products and fidget toys (http://apo-opa.co/3QmXkiT) for customers of all ages continue to be available onboard in all cabin classes, for passengers who are neurodiverse, anyone who is struggling onboard or is a nervous traveller.

Emirates Accessible & Inclusive Travel Hub (http://apo-opa.co/3QmXs1R) on Emirates.com has been designed to contain all the information needed for accessible and inclusive travel, featuring accessibility-friendly navigation that allows customers to find information easily and explore the many ways that Emirates can provide travel assistance and support. Aiming to reduce anxiety before travelling, customers can choose to view and explore sections by disability, including Hidden Disabilities. If preferred, customers can search by looking at specific parts of the journey, which have been clearly arranged – Before your flight, Departure from Dubai, Onboard your flight, Connecting in Dubai and Arriving in Dubai. A third option allows customers to browse by specific needs, including Prepare for travel with the autism-friendly guide and Explore Dubai Airport (DXB) Map and Sensory guides.

SEDFA Backs Africa’s Next Generation of Digital Businesses at Converge Africa 2026

Location: Business
VUKA Group

MSMEs are the backbone of South Africa's economy, contributing over 60% of employment and a significant share of GDP, yet many still face barriers to market access, funding, and digital integration.

As Africa's digital economy continues its rapid expansion, the next phase of growth will be driven not only by large enterprises, but by the scale, resilience, and innovation of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Recognising this, the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA) has partnered with Converge Africa 2026 as the official sponsor of the MSME Pavilion, reinforcing its commitment to enabling sustainable business growth and inclusive economic development across the continent.

Taking place from 4–6 May 2026 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Converge Africa brings together leaders across e-commerce, fintech, payments, logistics, digital marketing, and cybersecurity to shape the future of digital commerce in Africa.

At its core, the event is driven by a unifying imperative: “Frictionless digital commerce. Transacting seamlessly, without borders.”

Empowering the businesses that drive economic growth

SEDFA's sponsorship of the MSME Pavilion reflects a strategic focus on supporting emerging businesses as critical drivers of economic participation, job creation, and innovation.

Through its holistic approach, SEDFA provides financial assistance, business mentoring, and technical training, while also supporting formalisation, market access, and targeted development programmes such as Empretec, Manufacturing Supplier Programmes, and township and rural enterprise initiatives.

“Facilitating sustainable international market access is a core pillar of SEDFA's business development mandate. Enabling meaningful market linkages for small enterprises is critical to boosting exports and, in turn, driving inclusive economic growth. The Converge Africa Conference 2026 presents a powerful platform to unlock both local and global opportunities positioning our enterprises to compete effectively and sustainably in an increasingly digital economy.” Group Executive Business Development Support, Mr Sipho Ngcai

A platform for visibility, access and growth

As part of its sponsorship, SEDFA will enable 10 high-potential SMEs to exhibit within the MSME Pavilion at Converge Africa, providing them with:

  • Dedicated exhibition space to showcase products and services
  • Access to over 1,400 attendees from 700+ organisations
  • Opportunities to engage directly with corporate buyers, partners, and investors
  • Participation in conference sessions and workshops through sponsored delegate access

This initiative creates a direct bridge between emerging businesses and the broader digital commerce ecosystem, enabling practical opportunities for growth, collaboration, and scale.

Connecting SMEs to the digital economy ecosystem

Converge Africa is designed as a fully integrated ecosystem spanning five core pillars: Payments & Fintech; eCommerce; Digital Marketing; Fulfilment & Logistics; and Digital Security.

For SMEs, access to this ecosystem is critical.

The ability to integrate payments, optimise digital marketing, navigate logistics, and build trusted customer experiences determines whether businesses can compete and grow in today's environment.

SEDFA's presence within this ecosystem positions it as a key enabler, ensuring that smaller businesses are not excluded from the opportunities created by digital transformation.

Driving meaningful PR impact and industry recognition

Beyond the direct support of SMEs, SEDFA's sponsorship delivers significant strategic visibility.

Through integrated event branding, digital promotion, and on-site presence, SEDFA will be recognised as a champion of entrepreneurship and innovation within Africa's digital economy.

The stories of the participating SMEs, their journeys, and their engagement with industry leaders will generate powerful narratives that reinforce SEDFA's role as a catalyst for inclusive growth.

This aligns with a broader industry shift: economic development is no longer only about access to funding, but about enabling ecosystems where businesses can connect, learn, and scale.

The Business of Power and the Value of Compounding Impact

Enlit Africa's 2026 programme convenes decision-makers from utilities, private sector, government, industry and finance to tackle the business of delivering power across the continent – at a moment when system constraints, reform and investment urgency are converging. In South Africa, transmission constraints are limiting new connections and generation evacuation, municipal distribution and tariff reform is reshaping incentives and financial sustainability and the need for digitalisation is accelerating, raising both opportunity and operational risk. Across Africa, these same pressures show up in different forms: grid expansion and interconnection readiness, utility performance and collections, bankable project pipelines, procurement design, and the operational capability to deliver reliability at scale.

Anchored by Enlit Africa's year-round platform, the 2026 programme is shaped around the event theme: Compounding impact: small changes, outsized outcomes. The programme is designed to move beyond diagnosis and focus on practical levers that shift outcomes: what unlocks grid capacity, improves distribution performance and tariff credibility and turns data into operational capability at scale.

Pan-African participation: where Africa's power business connects

Enlit Africa, part of VUKA Group, is designed as a working platform for the continent's power ecosystem – utilities, regulators, municipalities, developers, financiers and technology providers – to align around delivery: projects that reach financial close, grid access that becomes real connections and operational improvements that translate into performance. With participation expected from 30+ African countries and international stakeholders Africa, Enlit Africa's role as a continental convening point rather than a single-country conversation is reinforced once again.

Level 2: the executive deal layer (limited access)

A defining feature of Enlit Africa is the Level 2 experience: a curated, executive environment designed to move beyond “conference attendance” into decision-grade engagement and deal flow. Level 2 brings together utility leadership, project owners, financiers and delivery partners in formats built for outcomes, not commentary.

Key elements include the Utility CEO Forum (closed-door) and the Projects & Investment Network (P&IN), alongside structured meeting zones and focused discussions where attendees can stress-test assumptions, clarify bankability requirements and move opportunities forward with the right stakeholders in the room. For delegates attending with investment, partnership, procurement or project-development intent, Level 2 is where the show is designed to convert insight into next steps.

“Delivery improves when finance, regulation and operations are aligned to the same outcomes. Enlit Africa creates the platform for that alignment to move from theory to execution.” – Marcel du Toit, Event Director, Enlit Africa

Transmission constraints: unlocking grid access and delivery

Across the programme, Enlit Africa 2026 addresses the constraint that increasingly defines feasibility across many markets: grid access. Sessions focus on the bottlenecks blocking evacuation and expansion, the delivery models and coordination required to scale build-out and the investment conditions that determine whether projects move from pipeline to operation – including practical discussions on infrastructure delivery, regional integration and the conditions that make projects bankable.

“Across Africa, the constraints are compounding: grid access, distribution performance, revenue certainty and the rapid shift to digital operations. Enlit Africa is where the business of power is discussed properly: what gets financed, what gets delivered and what keeps systems performing. The 2026 theme, ‘Compounding impact', reflects our focus on the small, targeted changes that unlock outsized outcomes.” – Claire Volkwyn, Head of Content, Enlit Africa

Municipal distribution and tariffs: making reform workable

As market evolution and procurement models change, municipalities and distribution utilities face a dual challenge: maintaining system performance while keeping tariffs credible, affordable and financially sustainable. Enlit Africa 2026 brings practitioners into the same room to unpack what distribution readiness looks like in practice, how tariff structures respond to new market signals and what technical and governance interventions help restore service reliability and revenue performance.

Digitalisation: from pilot projects to critical infrastructure

Utilities and large users are moving from digital ambition to operational dependency: smart metering, improved visibility and data-driven forecasting are becoming core to performance. The programme explores deployment realities, data governance and security and the operational capabilities required to turn digitisation into measurable outcomes rather than added complexity.

Water Security Africa: a dedicated focus

Alongside Enlit Africa, Water Security Africa runs as a co-located event. Water is a continuity risk for cities and industry and requires its own commercial and delivery logic. The Water Security Africa programme convenes stakeholders around water resilience, utility performance, reuse and recovery, regulatory enabling conditions and investment-ready delivery models.

Enlit Africa 2026 will take place on 19–21 May 2026 at the CTICC in Cape Town, South Africa. The full programme and registration information are available at: www.Enlit-Africa.com

Emirates and Wesgro sign MoU to Stimulate Inbound Tourism to the Western Cape

Location: Business
The Emirates Group

On the sidelines of Africa's World Travel Market (WTM), Emirates (www.Emirates.com) and Wesgro have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive inbound tourism and boost visitors to Cape Town and the Western Cape. The partnership underscores the airline's longstanding commitment to the market through attracting visitors from across its global network supporting the province's strategy of unlocking tourism growth.

The MoU was signed by Afzal Parambil, Emirates' Regional Manager for Southern Africa and Wrenelle Stander, Wesgro's Chief Executive Officer, at the Emirates' stand at WTM. Under the agreement, Emirates and Wesgro will collaborate on boosting travel from key growth markets including the GCC, Far East, India, and other mutually identified source markets, to promote the destination and encourage travellers to experience the abundance of natural, cultural and historical attractions.

Afzal Parambil said, “Cape Town is one of our most visited and most consistently in-demand destinations on our African network. Through this agreement with Wesgro, a longstanding and essential regional partner, we will collaborate to unlock new growth opportunities and further stimulate inbound tourism from key destinations on our global network, by showcasing the beauty and breadth of experience that Cape Town and the Western Cape have to offer. This partnership also further supports and complements our plan to introduce a third daily frequency to Cape Town, served by our newest aircraft type, the Airbus A350. This agreement is another signal of our steadfast commitment to South Africa. We look forward to playing a meaningful role in Cape Town's tourism success story for years to come.”

Wrenelle Stander said: “As the tourism, trade, and investment promotion agency for the region, Wesgro continues to focus on stimulating demand, strengthening trade relationships, and unlocking new opportunities across priority markets. Partnerships with organisations such as Emirates offer system-scale opportunities to engage global stakeholders and accelerate this momentum. Through ongoing collaboration with airlines, tourism trade and industry partners, Wesgro is positioning Cape Town and the Western Cape as a leading destination for both business and leisure - offering world-class, premium experiences, with love from the locals.”

Tourism is a key pillar in Cape Town and the Western Cape's economy, creating tens of thousands of employment opportunities and serving millions of tourists who visit the country each year. The partnership between Emirates and Wesgro supports the province's Growth for Jobs Strategy, which aims to unlock inclusive and sustainable tourism growth. In 2025 Cape Town International Airport recorded a record-breaking 11.1 million two-way passenger traffic, accounting for both domestic and international travellers. In recent years, Emirates has seen consistently high demand for travel into Cape Town, with high volumes of passengers from the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

Emirates first launched services to Cape Town in March 2008, the airline's second city in South Africa, after Johannesburg which began operations in 1995. Over the years, Emirates has steadily scaled operations to foster strong and reliable connectivity between Cape Town and the wider world, via Dubai.

In 2025, Emirates deployed its retrofitted Boeing 777 aircraft to the city and, this summer, is planning to add third daily frequency, served by its newest aircraft type, the Airbus A350. The deployment enhances travel options between South Africa and Dubai, with Emirates' full suite of products and services available for customers to enjoy – from the iconic A380 and the fully-retrofitted Boeing 777 to the next-gen A350. South Africa remains the only African nation to be served by all three aircraft in Emirates' fleet.

Beyond passenger connectivity, Emirates SkyCargo facilitates trade to and from South Africa, further stimulating the economy and connecting South African businesses with their global customers, quickly, reliably and efficiently. From Cape Town, Emirates SkyCargo moves significant volume of fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables, chilled meats, dairy, seafood and fresh cut flowers, transporting perishables from farm to shop with turnaround times of just 24 – 48 hours.

World Bank Group’s IFC and Citi Sign Borrowing Facility to Expand Local Currency Financing in South Africa

Location: Business

The World Bank Group

The World Bank Group, through its private-sector arm the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Citi have signed a new 1.6 billion South African rand borrowing facility that will expand IFC's ability to provide local currency financing in South Africa.

This facility adds to the World Bank Group's suite of local currency financing instruments, strengthening its capacity to support private sector development. The facility has supported IFC's anchor investment into the Cape Water outcome-based bond issued by South Africa's FirstRand Bank – the first outcome bond issued by a commercial bank globally.

"Local currency financing and capital markets development in emerging and developing markets are critical priorities for the World Bank Group." said Jorge Familiar, Vice President and World Bank Group Treasurer. "This facility is another example of what our partnerships with the private sector can deliver — from outcome bonds to local currency solutions — in support of long-term finance for job creation."

This facility builds on a similar one established in Kenyan Shilling (KES) that IFC and Citi signed in 2024.The two institutions plan to continue replicating the facility across additional countries.

“This facility deepens our partnership with the World Bank Group,” said Stephanie von Friedeburg, Global Head of Citi's Public Sector Group. “Following our Kenyan shilling transaction, this first South African rand facility reflects a model that can be replicated throughout emerging markets. It adds to the toolkit for development finance institutions and supports local currency financing where it is needed most.”

Currency volatility remains one of the most important priorities for private sector development in emerging markets. Deep and liquid capital markets are essential to ensuring access to local currency financing for development priorities — and by supporting new instruments in local capital markets, the World Bank Group contributes to the further deepening of those markets. Over the last decade, IFC has committed more than $33 billion in local currency financing across 71 local currencies.

SALGA and The Global Trust Project announce municipal pilot under new three-year MoU

Location: News

VUKA Group
Download logo

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and The Global Trust Project (TGTP – part of VUKA Group) (www.WeAreVUKA.com) have entered into a memorandum of understanding to pilot the Trust Equity Framework (TEf) in up to 18 municipalities across South Africa.

The initiative will be voluntary for participating municipalities and is intended to support stronger municipal trustworthiness, improved service delivery, better stakeholder relationships and more credible local conditions for investment.

The pilot comes at a time of sustained pressure in local government. The Auditor-General of South Africa reported that municipalities took an average of 123 days to collect money owed to them in 2023/24, wrote off R50.96 billion in debt, and recorded water losses of R14.93 billion and electricity losses of R22.36 billion. National Treasury has also placed local government reform and the review of the local government fiscal framework on its 2025/26 agenda.

Under the MoU, SALGA and TGTP will work together on a nationally distributed pilot over the next three years. The initiative is expected to include baseline assessment, leadership engagement, implementation support, follow-up evaluation and the development of a public South African Playbook on Trust-Rich Municipalities.

The TEf is an evidence-based framework for diagnosing, developing and embedding trustworthiness in institutional settings. At the centre of the TEf is the Trust Equity Index (TEi), which provides the diagnostic baseline by measuring trust and performance conditions. From there, the TEf moves into leadership development and implementation through practical pathways built around cues, cadences and controls: the signals leaders send, the management rhythms they establish, and the systems that help make those behaviours consistent.

The initiative is intended to demonstrate how trustworthiness can be operationalised as a measurable discipline inside local government, rather than treated only as a general aspiration.

For SALGA, the initiative aligns with an existing institutional mandate. SALGA represents all 257 South African municipalities through its national and provincial structures, and its 2022–2027 Strategic Plan identifies “a capable and reputable local government” as one of its core outcomes. SALGA has also stated: “Trust is the foundation and goal of professionalising local government - without it, capability and service delivery collapse.”

The pilot is intended to support that agenda by giving participating municipalities a structured way to examine how trustworthiness is experienced across leadership, systems, stakeholder relationships and everyday municipal practice, and how improvements in those conditions may contribute to stronger delivery and accountability.

Dominic Wilhelm, Executive Director, The Global Trust Project, said:  “South Africa's municipalities are operating under real fiscal, governance and service-delivery pressure. In that environment, trust cannot be treated as incidental. This pilot is intended to demonstrate how trustworthiness can be operationalised in a measurable way inside local government - and with material outcomes.”

Lerato Phasa, Portfolio Head: Municipal Finance, Fiscal Policy and Revenue Enhancement, SALGA, said:  “SALGA's role is to strengthen local government through practical support, institutional development and reform-oriented collaboration. This pilot is aligned with that work. It is voluntary, evidence-based and intended to generate useful practice from within the realities municipalities face.”

The pilot is part of TGTP's broader body of work in which elements of its framework have been deployed in institutional and advisory settings across Africa, Scandinavia, the United States and Asia.

The parties said the pilot is expected to generate practical learning for participating municipalities and a wider public resource for the local government sector.

AMW to Link Investors to Africa’s Aluminium Prospects Amid Middle East Supply Disruptions

Location: Business

Energy Capital & Power

As global aluminium prices surge - hitting a four-year high of $3,492 per ton in March 2026 - driven by tensions in the Middle East, the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) 2026, scheduled for October 14-16 in Cape Town, will explore the challenges and opportunities emerging for Africa within the global aluminium supply chain.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz - which accounts for approximately 12% of global aluminium trade – and attacks on industrial infrastructure across the Middle East - a region responsible for 9% of global output - are disrupting the global supply chain.

For Africa, these developments present both risks and opportunities. The continent currently has only one operational alumina refinery - the RUSAL-operated Friguia refinery in Guinea - leaving African markets highly exposed to global supply disruptions and price volatility. Despite holding more than 30% of the world's bauxite reserves, Africa accounts for less than 1% of global alumina refining capacity, highlighting a significant gap between resource availability and downstream processing infrastructure. As a result, many African economies rely heavily on imported aluminium products, particularly from the Middle East. South Africa, the continent's most industrialized economy, sources a large share of its unwrought aluminium imports from Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, with Bahrain alone accounting for more than 42% of these imports.

Against this backdrop, AMW 2026 will convene government officials, project developers, investors and industry leaders to explore strategies for strengthening Africa's role in the global aluminium supply chain. Discussions will focus on accelerating investments in bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminium processing infrastructure to reduce import dependence and build a more resilient regional industrial base.

Already, several projects are underway to unlock Africa's potential as a global aluminium hub. Guinea, the world's leading bauxite producer, is targeting the development of six alumina refineries with a combined capacity of approximately seven million tons per year by 2030. Meanwhile, Nigeria is advancing plans for its first large-scale alumina refinery, backed by $1.3 billion in financing from the Africa Finance Corporation and the Solid Minerals Development Fund. Ghana and Cameroon are also pursuing alumina refining projects to strengthen mineral beneficiation, build local industrial capacity and reduce exposure to global supply shocks.

Through high-level panel discussions, project showcases and networking sessions, AMW will connect global investors with African projects across bauxite and alumina value chains. The event represents an ideal platform for partnership formations and deal signings to accelerate Africa's transition from a major exporter of raw materials to a competitive player in the global aluminium industry.

The Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Public Administration (including Traditional Affairs, Human Settlements, and Water and Sanitation) will undertake oversight visits to municipalities in the Free State, North West and Gauteng provinces from 14 to 17 April 2026.

These visits form part of Parliament's constitutional mandate to oversee interventions in municipalities and ensure that they are functioning effectively to deliver essential services to communities.

Chairperson of the committee, Mr Mxolisi Kaunda, emphasised the importance of functional municipalities in fulfilling their constitutional obligations. “Municipalities play a critical role in delivering services to the people of South Africa. When they fail, communities are deprived of their basic rights to reliable and quality services. Our oversight seeks to ensure that no effort is spared in restoring proper governance and service delivery,” he said.

In the Free State, the committee will visit Masilonyana and Nketoana Local Municipalities, where interventions have been implemented in terms of Section 139(1)(b) of the Constitution. These interventions follow serious concerns, including financial mismanagement, governance failures, mounting debt and adverse audit outcomes. The committee will engage with stakeholders to assess the effectiveness and legality of these interventions and to gather input from affected communities.

In the North West, the committee will assess the situation in Ditsobotla Local Municipality, which was placed under national administration in September 2025 due to persistent instability, service delivery failures, and financial challenges.

In Gauteng, the committee will visit Emfuleni Local Municipality, which continues to face significant challenges, including poor service delivery, environmental concerns related to the Vaal River system and financial distress linked to outstanding debt owed to Rand Water.

The oversight visits aim to evaluate the state of governance, financial management, service delivery and public participation in these municipalities. The committee will also assess the support provided in terms of Section 154 of the Constitution.

Mr Kaunda highlighted the importance of community involvement in the oversight process. “Public participation is central to the work of Parliament. Engaging directly with communities and stakeholders ensures that our decisions are informed, credible, and reflective of the lived realities of the people,” he said. The committee will interact with political parties, labour unions, civil society, representatives of local businesses, youth and women structures and municipal leadership.

The committee is committed to identifying practical solutions to address the challenges facing municipalities and to contribute towards restoring their functionality and improving service delivery for all residents.

Complete PFL Africa: Pretoria – Nkosi Ndebele defeats Michele Clemente in a bantamweight classic shootout in the main event

Location: Sport
PFL

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) (https://PFLmma.com) made its Pretoria debut at SunBet Arena, where a packed South African crowd was treated to a full night of MMA action and statement performances across the card.

In the bantamweight main event, Pretoria was treated to Nkosi Ndebele vs. Michele Clemente, who traded sharp punches and elbows early. The Italian “Arrow” pushed with relentless pressure but frequently ran into sharp counters from the “King of Many Nations.” The two threw down in an all-time classic with the South African walking away with the unanimous decision win.

The heavyweight division delivered a wild one as Senegal's Abdoulaye Kane and South Africa's Justin Clarke went toe-to-toe in a firefight. Kane struck first with a huge early combination that left Clarke bloodied and on shaky legs, but the hometown hero refused to back down. Clarke bit down, swung back in the pocket, and turned the tide with a furious counter right hand that sent Kane crashing to the canvas.

Nigeria's David Samuel opened his welterweight tournament campaign in style, submitting Abdelrahman Mohammad in the first round after dropping him several times with sharp boxing. Once the fight hit the mat, Samuel locked in the finish and moved on with minimal damage.

In another welterweight tournament clash, Guinea-Bissau's late replacement Rivaldo Pereira made the most of his opportunity, stepping in on just a day's notice and stopping Kunle Lawal in the opening frame. Pereira folded Lawal with a body shot, then closed the show with elbows on the canvas to punch his ticket to the next stage. With those performances, Samuel and Pereira are now set to meet in the semi-finals, matching two of the tournament's most dangerous finishers against each other.

Angola's Shido Boris Esperança made short work of Emilios Dassi, turning in a near-flawless showing to punch his ticket to the next round of the welterweight tournament. After tripping Dassi to the canvas, Esperança quickly settled into top position and unloaded with elbows and punches until the referee stepped in for a first-round stoppage.

In another welterweight tournament bout, Yabna “The Panther” N'Tchala started strong against Peace Nguphane, cracking him with heavy shots early. Nguphane steadied himself, dragged the fight into his realm with takedowns and firm top control, and hammered away with ground-and-pound that swung momentum his way and earned a unanimous decision to the delight of the South African crowd. With those results, Esperança and Nguphane are now set to meet later this year in the semi-finals, where they will battle for a place in the tournament final.

In an all-Nigerian showdown, Juliet Ukah and Jane Osigwe went toe-to-toe in a feature catchweight bout, trading kicks and punches from the opening bell. Ukah, a Police Corporal known as “Golden Bones,” held the center of the cage and dictated the engagements, clipping Osigwe with steady counters as the rounds wore on. Her measured pressure and cleaner shots convinced two of the three judges, earning Ukah a split decision win.

Announced just today, PFL Africa is officially landing in West Africa, with the league set to stage its second PFL Africa event on June 13 for the first time in Nigeria at the Eko Arena in Lagos. Headlining the card will be Nigerian rising star and reigning 2025 PFL Africa Featherweight Champion, Wasi Adeshina, who returns home to compete in front of a Lagos crowd for the first time under the PFL banner, as he takes on Spanish standout, Ignacio Campos. The night will also feature a lightweight co-main event showcasing another Nigerian standout, Patrick Ocheme, as he faces Cameroonian contender Octave Ayinda in a lightweight bout.

PFL AFRICA: PRETORIA Results:

Nkosi Ndebele (12-3) defeated Michele Clemente (7-2) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Justin Clarke (5-1) defeated Abdoulaye Kane (5-2) via TKO (punches) in round 1 at 2:12

TotalEnergies’ Africa SVP Mike Sangster to Spotlight Expanding Project Pipeline at Paris Forum

Location: Business

Energy Capital & Power

TotalEnergies' Senior Vice President for Africa, Mike Sangster, will speak at the Invest in African Energy (IAE) Forum in Paris on April 22–23, as the company pushes forward a dense slate of upstream and LNG developments across the continent.

Africa remains central to TotalEnergies' global portfolio, accounting for roughly half of its operated production and the largest share of its exploration budget. That footprint is now translating into a new wave of project execution and investment decisions expected to shape output through 2026 and beyond.

In the Republic of Congo, the company committed $500 million in 2025 to new wells at the Moho Nord field, targeting an additional 40,000 barrels per day from an asset that already represents around half of national production. In East Africa, Uganda's Tilenga project is progressing toward first oil, supported by the 1,443-km East African Crude Oil Pipeline to Tanzania's port of Tanga.

Meanwhile, in Mozambique, TotalEnergies is advancing the restart of its $20 billion LNG project, a cornerstone development with planned capacity of 13 million tons per annum. The project's phased return marks a key step in unlocking one of Africa's largest gas reserves and is expected to be a major driver of production growth. Together, these projects are set to reverse earlier declines in output, with TotalEnergies' African production expected to recover through 2026 as new volumes come online.

Frontier assets are also moving closer to key decisions. In Namibia, the company is targeting a final investment decision on the Venus discovery in the fourth quarter of 2026, positioning it as one of the most closely watched deepwater projects globally. In South Africa, TotalEnergies is preparing to drill offshore Block 3B/4B in the Orange Basin, pending final approvals, as exploration activity accelerates in the region.

Alongside oil developments, gas monetization remains a priority. The company is advancing LNG and domestic gas projects, while maintaining zero routine flaring across its operations in Nigeria, Gabon and Angola. Its broader strategy also includes renewable and power investments, with solar projects in Southern and North Africa and hydropower in Uganda.

Sangster's participation at IAE comes at a time when TotalEnergies is managing one of its most active project pipelines in Africa in recent years, spanning near-term production growth, major LNG developments and high-impact frontier exploration.

IAE 2026 is an exclusive forum designed to connect African energy markets with global investors, serving as a key platform for deal-making in the lead-up to African Energy Week. Scheduled for April 22–23, 2026, in Paris, the event will provide delegates with two days of in-depth engagement with industry experts, project developers, investors and policymakers. Climate Litigation Surge Reshapes Energy Policy as Africa Seeks Stronger Legal Voice

Location: Business

African Energy Chamber
Download logo

The rapid rise of climate litigation is reshaping how energy policy is defined and enforced worldwide, with courts increasingly setting the parameters of climate action. Advisory proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) are establishing legal interpretations that extend far beyond national borders, influencing how governments regulate emissions, approve projects, and manage natural resources.

For Africa, the implications are significant. While the continent contributes less than 4% of global emissions, it faces mounting pressure to align with legal standards largely shaped outside the region. Without stronger participation in these proceedings, African states risk having climate obligations defined externally – with direct consequences for industrialization, energy access, and investment flows.

Against this backdrop, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) has moved to intervene in a landmark advisory proceeding before the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. The application seeks amicus curiae status in a case initiated by the Pan African Lawyers Union, which aims to define state climate obligations under the African Charter.

The case reflects a broader jurisprudential shift. Recent and ongoing proceedings build on earlier rulings such as Social and Economic Rights Action Center v. Nigeria and Ivorian League of Human Rights v. Côte d'Ivoire, which established environmental protection as an enforceable legal duty while affirming the need to safeguard broader socioeconomic rights. Together, these decisions are expanding the scope of climate-related obligations across jurisdictions.

At the global level, advisory opinions from the ICJ and ITLOS emphasize that states must exercise due diligence to prevent significant environmental and climate-related harm – setting clearer expectations for how climate obligations are interpreted under international law. While these interpretations stop short of prohibiting fossil fuel development, they introduce more stringent expectations around environmental oversight, regulatory enforcement, and long-term climate risk management.

This trend is already affecting the financing of oil and gas projects across Africa. Banks and insurers are increasingly cautious about backing high-emission infrastructure, citing reputational and legal risks. For example, Standard Chartered declined to finance the $5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline due to civil society pressure and climate concerns. These risk-averse stances make loans for large upstream projects harder to secure, leaving some discoveries unable to reach FID. In Nigeria, marginal field developments have stalled despite proven reserves, and refinery expansions that could improve local energy security struggle to attract funding. To fill these gaps, African-led initiatives like the Africa Energy Bank are emerging, reflecting a shift in financing flows in response to climate and regulatory risk.

As a result, the continent's ability to expand production and meet energy demand is constrained. Projects with strong fundamentals may face delays, stranded asset risk or permit uncertainty. Downstream and gas-to-power projects – critical for local consumption – also struggle for financing, even as climate and legal frameworks evolve. While institutions like Afreximbank have underwritten $2.5 billion toward Nigeria's Dangote Petroleum Refinery, upstream oil and gas finance remains fragmented amid global climate mandates and litigation risk.

In South Africa, the Climate Change Act (2024) aligns domestic law with international climate commitments, and recent litigation – including a Supreme Court of Appeal decision invalidating a gas power plant authorization for inadequate environmental assessment – demonstrates how courts are increasingly scrutinizing energy projects.

This shift is redefining risk for investors. Expanding legal interpretations – including the potential characterization of climate inaction as an internationally wrongful act – increase exposure for states and private operators. Projects that fail to meet evolving standards may face financing hurdles, delays or stranded asset risk, while governments may confront investor-state disputes if regulatory changes affect project viability.

At the same time, these legal developments are reshaping geopolitics. African states are leveraging climate-related legal findings to strengthen claims for climate finance, debt relief and technology transfer. By framing climate harm as a legal liability rather than solely a political issue, the continent gains negotiating leverage – but also subjects domestic energy strategies to greater scrutiny.

Within this landscape, the AEC's intervention ensures African priorities are represented in emerging legal standards. The Chamber advocates for a balanced interpretation that recognizes both environmental obligations and the right to development, particularly in a region where more than 600 million people lack access to electricity. Competing perspectives remain strong, with environmental groups calling for stricter limits on fossil fuel expansion under human rights frameworks.

“If Africa leaves its energy future to outside courts, we risk seeing policies designed for other continents applied here,” says NJ Ayuk, AEC Executive Chairman. “Climate litigation is not just a regulatory challenge – it affects financing for our oil and gas sector. Banks are retreating, discoveries can't reach FID and projects that could fuel our energy ambitions remain stalled. Africa must turn this challenge into an opportunity to define standards that protect the planet while ensuring our people, our resources, and our growth are not left behind.”

The rise of climate litigation marks a decisive shift from political negotiation to legal enforcement. For Africa, the stakes are clear: engage actively in shaping these frameworks or risk adapting to standards set elsewhere. Ensuring African representation in these processes is now critical not only to align climate ambition with economic growth and energy security but also to secure the financing necessary for the continent's oil and gas sector to reach its potential.

Eswatini Opens to Investors for First-Of-Its-Kind Roadshow

Location: Business

International Trade Centre
Download logo

For the first time, Eswatini's most investment-ready enterprises pitched directly to international impact investors, and the results exceeded expectations on both sides.

For three days in March 2026, Eswatini became a live pitch room. Five investment-ready enterprises – Luna Hair & Body, Eswatini Foods, Beef Boys, Ngwenya Glass, and Black Mamba – hosted site visits from regional and international impact investors. They opened their books, their facilities, and their ambitions to capital providers seeking exactly what Eswatini had to offer. Beyond the site visits, investors met with government officials, financial institutions, and ecosystem players – building a full picture of Eswatini's regulatory environment, financial landscape, and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The Eswatini Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprise (MSME) Investment Roadshow, held from 3 to 5 March 2026, was the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Convened by the European Union and the International Trade Centre (ITC), in partnership with the Government of Eswatini, the Roadshow brought five impact investors offering funding schemes ranging from $50,000 to $3 million. They came from South Africa, Belgium, and Ghana for an immersive, curated programme of site visits, bilateral meetings, policy dialogue, and ecosystem engagement.

The event built on groundwork laid at the inaugural MSME Conference in November 2025, which explored alternative financing for small businesses. A panel discussion at that conference featured impact investor Unconventional Capital and the East Africa Venture Capital Association. They introduced Eswatini's business community to emerging instruments: blended finance, revenue-based financing, digital credit scoring, and mobile money lending. These offerings meet small businesses where they are, rather than where traditional banks expect them to be.

The three days produced concrete results. By the end of the programme, one company had received an initial investment commitment after its site visit. Several others had started early-stage investment discussions. Multiple investors confirmed plans to return – some looking to work through local financial institutions and invest larger amounts – a sign that interest in Eswatini extends well beyond the five companies visited.

Speaking at the welcome reception, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo highlighted the deliberate focus on small businesses as central to addressing economic inequality.

‘The wealth in Eswatini is concentrated on a few, and we see MSME development as one of the key solutions to this particular problem,' he said, welcoming impact investors as partners in closing that gap.

Principal Secretary Ambassador Melusi Masuku offered a direct message: ‘Eswatini is open for business. We are safe and stable. Our Kingdom is a haven of peace and stability in a complex world.'

The roadshow marks an inflection point: the moment Eswatini moved from describing its investment potential to demonstrating it.

AEC Intervenes in Landmark Climate Case to Defend Africa’s Energy Future

Location: Business

African Energy Chamber
Download logo

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org) has formally submitted its application to be admitted as amicus curiae in a landmark advisory proceeding before the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, marking a strategic step to ensure Africa's energy priorities are represented in a case with far-reaching implications for the continent.

The case, initiated by the Pan African Lawyers Union, seeks to clarify the legal obligations of African states in addressing climate change under regional human rights frameworks. While the request underscores Africa's vulnerability to climate impacts, it also raises critical questions about how such obligations could be interpreted in practice – particularly in relation to energy development, industrialization and economic growth.

The request asks the Court to clarify a range of issues, including state obligations to address climate impacts, protect vulnerable populations, implement mitigation and adaptation measures, and ensure accountability in energy policy and development decisions. Engagement from African states and stakeholders has been uneven, raising concerns that outcomes may not fully reflect the continent's priorities.

For the AEC, the stakes are significant. Across the continent, there is growing concern that climate-related litigation and advocacy – often funded or guided by foreign NGOs – has sought to block financing or development of African energy projects. Recent examples include lawsuits challenging funding for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, gas development in Mozambique by Total Energies and aggressive litigation in South Africa targeting oil and natural gas exploration. The Chamber believes African voices must lead the conversation.

“We would have preferred a dialogue led by Africans on this matter,” says NJ Ayuk, AEC Executive Chairman. “Africa must not be a passive participant in decisions shaping its energy future. Our application ensures the voices of African countries, their industries and citizens are heard. Climate policy must reflect not only environmental priorities, but also the fundamental right to development and energy access.”

Africa accounts for a small share of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet remains the most energy-poor region in the world. More than 600 million people still lack access to electricity, while clean cooking solutions remain out of reach for hundreds of millions more. In this context, the AEC maintains that oil and gas resources will continue to play a vital role in enabling industrialization, job creation and economic resilience.

Through its submission, the Chamber aims to provide the Court with sector-specific insights on the intersection of climate change, human rights and energy development. In particular, the AEC emphasizes the importance of a balanced and inclusive energy transition, incorporating hydrocarbons alongside renewable energy solutions.

The advisory opinion comes amid a broader global trend of climate-related litigation, reinforcing the need for African institutions to actively engage in shaping legal frameworks. Ensuring that African perspectives and priorities are central to these debates is critical to achieving outcomes that are fair, equitable, and aligned with the continent's development ambitions.

“As a continent, we must lead this debate with clarity and conviction,” Ayuk added. “Decisions made today will shape Africa's energy future for generations. Africa deserves a framework that protects its right to develop, ensures energy access and addresses climate challenges in a fair, pragmatic way – without undue influence from foreign actors or NGOs.”

The Chamber's engagement marks the start of a broader effort to inform, mobilize and align stakeholders across the continent, helping to safeguard Africa's right to responsibly and sustainably develop its energy resources.

Australian mining company Resolute Mining has approved a $516 million Final Investment Decision (FID) for its Doropo Gold Project in the Ivory Coast. The FID advances the project into the construction phase, with first production of 500,000 ounces per annum expected by 2028, strengthening the country and Africa's position as major gold producers. Similarly, Toubani Resources approved a $216 million FID for the Kobada Gold Project in Mali, enabling the project to enter construction. Designed to produce approximately 162,000 ounces of gold per annum, Kobada supports Mali's strategy to expand gold output beyond the current 60 tons per annum.

Such approvals signal growing capital inflows into Africa's mining sector, as developers advance projects toward production to meet rising global mineral demand while the continent seeks investment partners to unlock its estimated $8.5 trillion in untapped mineral resources.

Rising FIDs Drive New Phase of Growth for African Mining

As more mining projects reach FID stage, Africa's mining industry is entering a new phase of expansion, with the capital strengthening the continent's role in global supply chains while driving infrastructure development, job creation and long-term economic growth.

With global demand for critical minerals expected to triple by 2030, FID announcements across Africa are set to accelerate, underpinned by the continent's 30% share of energy transition metal reserves. The expanding pipeline of FIDs underscores the strong momentum building across the sector.

Rio Tinto approved a $473 million investment decision to extend the life of the Zulti South Project to 2050, strengthening South Africa's position as a long-term supplier of mineral sands including zircon and ilmenite, which are essential inputs for construction, ceramics and advanced manufacturing industries. Meanwhile, Tharisa approved a $547 million FID for an underground expansion at its Bushveld Complex operations. The project is expected to deliver over 200,000 ounces of platinum group metals (PGMs) annually alongside more than two million tons of chrome concentrate, reinforcing the country's position as the world's leading supplier of PGMs.

Beyond these projects, a broader pipeline of developments is advancing toward investment decisions across the continent. Major projects including the Manono Lithium Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Gorumbwa Platinum Project in Zimbabwe, the Diamba Sud Gold Project in Senegal and the Kabanga Nickel Project in Tanzania are progressing toward potential FIDs as investors position themselves to capture rising demand for battery minerals and critical metals.

Investment Momentum Ahead of African Mining Week

This growing pipeline of investment decisions and project developments will be a key focus of the upcoming African Mining Week 2026, taking place October 14–16 in Cape Town. The event will connect investors, project developers and government regulators to explore partnership opportunities and investment prospects across Africa's mining value chain. Through high-level discussions and project showcases, the conference will examine how rising FIDs are driving production growth, strengthening infrastructure development and advancing Africa's strategy to transform its mineral wealth into long-term economic value.

ABB’s Application Configurator Brings Speed and Precision to Grid-Feeding Protection System Design

Location: News

As distributed energy resources (DERs) scale rapidly across Africa and globally, the pressure to design safe, compliant and grid-stable protection systems has never been greater. ABB, a global leader in electrification solutions for the energy transition, is meeting this challenge head-on with its Application Configurator.

The Application Configurator is a free tool that enables engineers to generate a complete, validated bill of materials for grid-feeding protection systems in minutes rather than hours.

In an exclusive interview with ESI Africa (published by VUKA Group), 3 experts unpack how DER is reshaping the electricity network and how a smart solution makes the connection quick and manageable.

DERs are reshaping the grid — and testing its limits

Rising DER penetration is fundamentally reshaping grid dynamics and challenging existing infrastructure. Grid-feeding protection (which prevents faults and islanding) is increasingly difficult to implement given the diversity of grid codes, architectures and regional standards. Designing flexible, adaptive solutions is now essential to maintaining grid stability while keeping projects on schedule.

Africa's energy transition: opportunity and complexity

South Africa exemplifies both the scale of opportunity and the complexity of the challenge. The country is integrating a rapidly growing installed base of distributed energy resources into an already strained electricity grid. Grid connection capacity has long been a bottleneck, but a major national upgrade programme — encompassing new long-distance transmission lines and expanded large-scale transformer capacity — is now underway. This decade-long effort aims to ease severe congestion, address structural capacity constraints, and lower barriers to connecting new renewable projects.

Although national loadshedding has been suspended since late March 2024, load reduction remains common in areas where local networks risk overloading. In this environment, grid-feeding protection systems play a critical role: they help stabilise installations during periods of high stress and protect vulnerable infrastructure from failure.

Why automatic disconnection is non-negotiable

When DERs remain connected during a grid fault, they can amplify the problem rather than help contain it. If a localised grid issue occurs while DERs continue feeding power into an unstable system, what begins as a minor disturbance can escalate into a major disruption. Grid-feeding protection systems detect voltage and frequency deviations instantly, isolating DERs before cascade failures can develop — protecting both grid stability and worker safety.

Application Configurator: from hours to minutes

Selecting the right products for a grid-feeding system has traditionally been a time-consuming and error-prone process, requiring engineers to cross-reference extensive datasheets, technical catalogues and multiple product families. ABB's Application Configurator fundamentally changes this workflow.

Through a guided four-step process, the tool automatically proposes the optimal electrical architecture based on project-specific parameters — including grid code standards, generation power, backup and interface devices, inverter details, short-circuit levels, and connection configuration. It draws on ABB's full product portfolio and built-in engineering expertise to recommend protection devices, interface relays, disconnecting devices, surge protection, accessories, and communication or monitoring options.

The configurator automatically verifies selectivity, protection coordination, short-circuit withstand ratings, interface protection requirements, and component compatibility — significantly reducing the risk of mis-sizing or design errors. Users retain full flexibility to adjust quantities, swap components, or add accessories at any stage, with recommendations updating instantly. The output is a complete, validated bill of materials tailored to the specific project.

Free access for all engineers

Application Configurator is available at no cost to any engineer or project team, whether existing ABB customers or those new to ABB solutions. Users simply create an account, input their project details, and begin configuring immediately. No prior ABB relationship is required.

Upcoming webinar: design grid-feeding protection systems

ABB is hosting a webinar on 15 April 2026 demonstrating how Application Configurator simplifies and accelerates the design of compliant grid-feeding protection systems. The session will cover how the tool ensures safety, grid stability, availability, and power continuity across a range of project types.
