Brazil officially hands over G20 Presidency to South Africa

Rio de Janeiro - Brazil has officially transferred the historic Group of 20 (G20) Presidency to South Africa at the closing ceremony of the annual summit that was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

South Africa will make history as the first African country to preside over the G20, with approximately 130 meetings planned for 2025.

The ceremonial handover was conducted by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who both struck the ceremonial gavel before exchanging handshakes and smiles.

The prominent G20 Leaders’ Summit kicked off yesterday with Heads of State and their delegates being welcomed at the Museum of Modern Art. 

“It is an honour to accept, on behalf of the people of South Africa, the responsibility of the Presidency of the G20 for the next year,” the President said on Tuesday.

He took the time to congratulate the Brazilian President, a long-time friend, for a successful G20 Presidency that elevated the participation of social and civil society groups and convened the first-ever G20 Social Summit.

“South Africa firmly believes that civil society serves as a bridge between the G20 leaders and the people who have the greatest interest in their deliberations.”

The President has committed to maintaining this innovative platform for engagement throughout the country’s Presidency.

He said he believed that efforts during the Brazilian Presidency have tackled some of the world’s most urgent global challenges. 

President Ramaphosa praised the increased attention on the development agenda for developing countries and said they would build on the work that has already begun.

“We applaud all G20 members, led by Brazil, in finalising the G20 Rio de Janeiro Leaders’ Declaration, which outlines the actions we must take together to build a better world.  

“We appreciate that once sufficient consensus was reached on the declaration, those members who still had points of disagreement did not stand in the way of adopting the declaration.”

The Head of State said South Africa was committed to advancing the G20’s efforts to achieve greater global economic growth and sustainable development.

“We will work to ensure no one is left behind.”

Furthermore, he said South Africa would strive to harness global collective efforts to address the challenges worsened by the fragility of global solidarity, crippling underdevelopment, and increasing inequality.  

President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa had adopted the G20 presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”.

“In line with this theme, we will seek to strengthen and advance our common pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Pact for the Future.”

He emphasised that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 should be a priority for the next five G20 Presidencies. 

“Through our G20 Presidency, we will seek to strengthen solidarity. Whether it is in Gaza, Sudan, or Ukraine, we must all stand in solidarity with those people who are facing hardship and suffering.”

He expressed his support for nations who are most vulnerable to pandemics and other global public health crises, highlighting that many countries in Africa are currently facing mpox outbreaks that require urgent international action.

He stressed that through the country’s G20 Presidency, they will address inequality, a major threat to global economic growth and stability.

“The disparities in wealth and development within and between countries are unjust and unsustainable. These disparities show themselves in the lack of predictable and sustainable financing and capacity building for climate action.”

He said they were using the moment to firmly place the development priorities of the African continent and the Global South on the G20 agenda.

The focus areas include inclusive economic growth, industrialisation, employment, inequality and food security.

Two-day G20 Summit kicks off in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro - The long-awaited Group of 20 (G20) Leaders’ Summit has kicked off with Heads of State and their delegates being welcomed at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil on Monday. 

The venue, located in the heart of the city and showcasing a collection of Brazilian and international masterpieces, is hosting Heads of State from the 20 largest economies, along with representatives from the European Union and the African Union, over the next two days. 

Located within the iconic Flamengo Park, the museum boasts tranquil, lush green surroundings. 

This prominent gathering of world leaders has been convened to discuss critical issues affecting the globe, with a specific focus on climate change. 

Several roads will be closed to the public for the duration of the summit, which will conclude on Tuesday, 19 November 2024, as many visitors return home. 

Visitors are welcomed by clean streets adorned with billboards and posters featuring the G20 Summit logo. 

Security personnel, including local police and army members, are ensuring the venue is secure as they line the streets on a warm spring day, leading to the main venue and the media centre. 

Law enforcement personnel, many of whom are armed, are conducting security patrols and bag checks. 

The city has deployed 130 traffic operators along with 55 motorcycles and 22 operational vehicles in areas directly related to the event and along the city’s main traffic routes. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, United States President Joe Biden, and Chinese President Xi Jinping are among the leaders in attendance. 

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed the leaders of the G20 guest countries, while his wife, Janja Lula da Silva, greeted spouses of guest nations and G20 members. 

Da Silva delivered welcoming remarks before the first session, which will discuss social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty. 

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres is also attending the gathering and expressed gratitude to President da Silva for hosting him in his country for this year’s G20 Leaders’ Summit. 

“Our times are tumultuous, and we need to race much faster to tackle fundamental common challenges. The climate crisis has burned through another record, with 2024 likely to be the hottest year in history.

“We see the impacts everywhere. Look no further than the drought in the Amazon and horrible floods in southern Brazil,” he told the media. 

Meanwhile, he said conflicts are raging and impunity spreading, with repeated violations of international law and the UN Charter. 

“Inequality is growing, and progress on poverty and hunger has stalled. The Sustainable Development Goals are off-track.” 

He challenged the G20 leaders to lead and tackle key global problems including peace. 

He advocated for the strengthening of the global financial safety net to ensure that all countries are protected when shocks occur. In addition, he urged nations to agree on an ambitious climate finance goal that addresses the significant challenges faced by developing countries. 

“Many challenges, but also many possible solutions. The G20 must lead by example. 

“This is fundamental to restoring trust, credibility, and legitimacy of every government and our global system in these turbulent times. We need to seize every opportunity to lead transformative action for a safer, more peaceful and sustainable world,” the General Secretary added. – SAnews.gov.za

Arts and creative industries can drive behavioural change

The arts and creative industries hold the unique power to build empathy and drive behavioural change, says Deputy Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike.

Letsike was speaking at a stakeholder engagement on the empowerment of women, youth and people with disabilities held at The Playhouse Company in Durban on Tuesday.

Held under the theme: “Addressing social ills through the creative industry”, the stakeholder engagement addressed the creative industry as a vehicle to highlight the impact of violence against people with disabilities, sex workers, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and intersex (LGBTQI) individuals, and women and children, among others.

The engagement demonstrated other opportunities available to address gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the communities through sports, arts and culture.

In her address, Letsike said the arts and creative industries hold the unique power to influence social consciousness, build empathy and drive behavioural change.

“Music, theatre, visual arts and storytelling can reach the hearts and minds of audiences, raising awareness and influencing behaviour in ways that traditional methods sometimes fall short of achieving. 

"The creative industry also plays a vital role in educational prevention and intervention by using different art forms as vehicles for teaching respect, empathy, and non-violence,” Lestsike said.

Letsike said producing artworks that convey the harsh realities of discrimination and creating powerful theatre productions that depict stories of resilience, the arts can foster crucial conversations around what it means to be a healthy society and nation.

She said the arts can shift societal mindsets and challenge outdated norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women, girls and LGBTQIA+ people.

“In this way, the industry becomes not just observers but active participants in reshaping the narrative of our nation. Further, the wide reach of the creative arts fraternity offers long-term, comprehensive, adaptable, context-specific, and holistic approaches to prevention that target all people living in South Africa through its messaging,” Letsike said.

The Deputy Minister underscored the need for citizens to adopt an all-of-society approach, where every individual, community and institution takes an active role toward addressing the country’s social challenges.

She said every South African must understand that ending social challenges is a national obligation for all.

“This is the message that must be carried far and wide by the cultural and creative industries,” the Deputy Minister said.

Letsike encouraged every individual in the industry to continue their “astounding” work that touches the hearts and minds of the nation, and has the potential to turn the tide against violence directed at women, children, LGBTQIA+ people and people with disabilities, and eliminate the social acceptance of all forms of discrimination.

Continues to address GBVF

Letsike said government continues with efforts toward addressing GBVF through the implementation of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on GBVF.

“The NSP represents our unified, multi-sectoral approach to addressing this scourge across all levels of society. We have also launched the National Comprehensive GBVF Prevention Strategy, which broadens the scope of our interventions and places particular focus on preventive measures to stop GBVF before it starts.

“To date, these frameworks have led to the establishment of improved survivor support services, enhanced legal frameworks, and strengthened partnerships with civil society and the private sector. 

"We continue to work closely with our partners, including community organisations and faith-based groups to ensure that our interventions reach every corner of society,” the Deputy Minister said.

The event was held as a build-up to the District Development Model Presidential Imbizo that will take place on Friday, where President Cyril Ramaphosa will assess service delivery and engage with the people at Umnini Sports Field in Umgababa, south of Durban. – SAnews.gov.za

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) (www.CCBAGroup.com) has invested $50 million in a new bottling line in Namibia, capable of producing 27,000 bottles per hour. This upgrade will increase the plant's output capacity by 30% and stimulate growth throughout the company's value chain.

The investment also includes the installation of a water treatment plant with state-of-the-art water recovery technology, designed to reduce water consumption. Additionally, the integration of advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, will require skills training for employees, contributing to the development of a future-ready workforce for both the business and the country.

“We've ensured that this production line goes beyond output numbers,” said Pottie de Bruyn, General Manager of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Namibia. “It's about creating shared opportunities across the value chain. The increased production also provides a boost to local businesses that supply us with raw materials and services.”

United Kingdom (UK) Visa Services in South Africa Are Now Available in PE/GQ Through VFS Global

Effective 22 October 2024, customers applying for a UK visa will be directed to VFS Global to book an appointment to complete their visa application. Customers will also have the option to choose additional services designed to make the application process easier.

Commenting on the launch of the new Centres, Mr. Alok Singhal, Head- Sub-Saharan Africa, VFS Global, said, “We are excited to embark on this new journey with UK Visas and Immigration here in South Africa. We have enjoyed a long-standing partnership with UK Visas and Immigration since 2003 and look forward to now bringing travellers from South Africa our best-in-class services.”

UK visa customers can now choose from a range of optional services offered by VFS Global to provide enhanced comfort and convenience. These include document upload assistance, Prime Time for application submission outside of business hours, SMS notifications, document checking service, and courier return of the passport once a decision has been made.

Customers can also submit their UK visa applications from the comfort and safety of their home, office or any other preferred location with our On Demand Mobile Visa service. VFS Global's Keep My Passport While Applying service allows customers to keep their passports once their application is submitted and biometrics have been enrolled. Customer will only need to re-submit their passport when a decision is reached.

On the first day of the conference, the Plenary Session of the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary 2024 took place, featuring a high-level panel discussion with the participating First Ladies of Africa and Asia. Moreover, two high-level ministerial panel discussion were held with African Ministers and top healthcare experts from across the globe.

The Day 2 of the conference will have five key parallel medical and scientific sessions, covering topics such as oncology, diabetes and hypertension, fertility and reproductive care, and medical capacity building in other specialties like respiratory care, acute care, emergency pediatric and neonatal care, and more. Additionally, a community awareness session, Merck Foundation Health Media Training, will be conducted for African journalists. Hazelmere Dam to improve water supply in KZN North Coast

Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, has emphasised the important role the eThekwini Metro, iLembe and KwaDakuza Municipalities in the North Coast have to play in order to ensure the reticulation of water to households.

This follows the commissioning of the world’s highest piano key weir dam, Hazelmere Dam, to improve water supply in the three municipalities.

Majodina commissioned the world’s highest piano key weir [a low dam built across a river to raise the level of water upstream or regulate its flow] dam located in the Mdloti River, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.

A piano key weir is a nonlinear, labyrinth-type weir well suited for rehabilitation projects due to a relatively small footprint and the ability to pass large discharge for lesser upstream-head values when compared with other weird types. 

The commissioning of the state-of-the-art dam comes after the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) successfully completed a project to raise the dam wall by seven metres to increase storage capacity, and to augment water supply to areas including Verulam, Groutville, Blythedale and Ballito.

Speaking during a community engagement, Majodina emphasised the important role that municipalities have to play in order to ensure the reticulation of water to households.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation upgraded the Hazelmere Dam wall to meet the needs of the increasing population in the North Coast, as it is our role to ensure bulk water supply. The concerned municipalities should now roll up their sleeves to ensure that water is directed to households,” Majodina said.  

The North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal has experienced rapid growth in recent years, especially in the housing sector, which resulted in an increased demand for potable water.

Majodina said Hazelmere Dam forms part of the country’s state-of-the-art dams.

“Hazelmere Dam can now be measured against world class standards due the type of spillway selection, technology and innovation used in implementing the project.”

The raising of the dam wall will address water challenges in some parts of the three municipalities.

The project scope of the work includes the raising of the dam wall by  seven metres (from 86m to 93.00m); the construction of and retrofitting a piano key weir (PKW) onto an existing dam spillway structure; the installation of 83 rock anchors, as well as foundation grouting and other minor related works.

The dam has an uncontrolled PKW spillway. This was done to ensure that the dam wall withstands extreme concentration of floods of between six and eight hours for the dam catchment area.  

Some of the employed technologies undertaken to upgrade the dam wall include the world’s highest piano key weir; the world’s largest anchors were installed to improve stability of the concrete gravity dam wall structure, and the largest capacity post-tensioning stressing jacks were deployed during construction.

The technologies employed also included the use of innovative data management software for real-time monitoring of anchor performance and 3D digital crack meters.  

The department said the upgrading of the wall assisted with the creation of employment opportunities for 187 locals, including 16 women and 53 young people.

“The total number of small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) appointed were 11, with two women-owned. In addition, the successful training of 14 engineers took place during the project, with some subsequently obtaining professional registration, marking a significant achievement in capacity building,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA well placed to be major hub in clean tech value chain

South Africa is well placed to become a hub for components and equipment manufacturing in the clean technology value chain, including battery technologies for energy storage, electric mobility, material handling and a range of other applications. 

This is according to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Andrew Whitfield, who addressed the opening of the R150 million Balancell state-of-the-art Gigafactory in Cape Town.

Balancell is a future-focused, innovative technology business that develops smart batteries designed to manage and protect themselves, and report their use and condition remotely.

“The South African government is working closely with the industry to identify opportunities to deepen the battery technology value chain and to position South Africa as a manufacturing hub on the African continent.

“A recent benchmarking study, supported by the World Bank Group, shows that South Africa is a competitive manufacturing destination, and offers a compelling value proposition for companies in this sector, as demonstrated here,” Whitfield said.

To support these ambitions, Whitfield said there was a number of policies and incentives in place that will enable the growth of this key sector. He said Cabinet has already approved the New Energy Vehicle White paper, setting out the objectives for this sector. 

“Being able to witness an investment from homegrown companies in this sector is truly inspiring. Balancell’s investment of R150 million in this factory is not only directly in line with the strategic priorities of the Government of National Unity, but also a demonstration of the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that defines many South African businesses. 

“We are motivated by the company’s prospects for growth and further job creation in the coming years. The 75 existing jobs created in this [Gigafactory], supporting more than 1 500 indirect jobs, is a clear indication of the multiplier effect that can be achieved by strengthening and growing the manufacturing sector,” Whitfield said.

A Gigafactory is a huge factory that produces very large numbers of batteries for electric vehicles.

Whitfield highlighted the importance of building a strong base of skilled South Africans. 

“Expanding industry partnerships with leading universities and research institutions to enhance local research, development and testing of components is critical to the industry. I am, therefore, encouraged that you are already working with the Nelson Mandela and Stellenbosch Universities, as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research,” the Deputy Minister said. 

He described the opening of the Gigafactory as an affirmation of the importance of building industrial capacity and working together to achieve the shared vision of South Africa being a global player in the battery value chain.

In a significant step towards strengthening its public health infrastructure, Zimbabwe established a dedicated laboratory for the analysis of polio samples collected through environmental surveillance (ES). Previously, these samples were sent to South Africa for testing, resulting in a turnaround time of approximately 21 days.

With financial and technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO), the newly renovated laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology testing equipment and staffed by highly trained personnel. WHO further provided training to 10 laboratory scientists to run the new laboratory and locally carry out environmental samples testing. This local capability will significantly reduce the time required to detect and respond to potential outbreaks of polio. 

Three experts from the African Polio Laboratory network, proficient in WHO ES testing methods for poliovirus, were identified by WHO Regional Officer for Africa (AFRO) to provide the training needs to th University of Zimbabwe (UZ) where the laboratory is situated. The team includes Shelina Moonsamy as the Team Lead (Head of Polio Laboratory, NICD, Johannesburg, South Africa), James Peter Eliku (ES Technical Expert, Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, Uganda) and Thabo Mashupye (ES Technical Expert, NICD). 

"The establishment of this laboratory is a major milestone in our efforts to safeguard the health of Zimbabweans," said Mr Paradzayi Chibukira, Technical Supervisor at the Zimbabwe National Virology Polio Laboratory at UZ.  "By reducing the turnaround time for laboratory results, we can more effectively implement prevention and control measures to prevent the reintroduction of polio into our country."

Environmental surveillance for polio is a critical component of global efforts to monitor and eradicate the polio. It involves collecting and analyzing sewage and other environmental samples to detect the presence of the poliovirus, which can indicate circulation of the virus in the community. This method complements traditional surveillance through the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance system and provides a broader view of potential outbreaks.

Polio is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause paralysis, especially in children. While Zimbabwe has been polio-free for many years, the risk of reintroduction remains, particularly due to the ongoing global efforts to eradicate the disease.

With support from WHO, Zimbabwe launched its environmental surveillance programme in 2023, beginning with sites in Harare and Chitungwiza. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to strengthen disease monitoring and improve response capabilities. The introduction of environmental surveillance in these initial sites marked a key step in the country's commitment to enhancing its public health infrastructure. Additional sites were established in other major cities, including Bulawayo, Gweru, and Victoria Falls in 2024. This expansion reflects Zimbabwe's proactive approach to disease monitoring and its determination to safeguard public health.

"We applaud and fully support Zimbabwe's decision to set up the laboratory for polio surveillance and this development not only enhances the country's capacity for timely and accurate detection of poliovirus in the environment but also strengthens the overall public health infrastructure,” said Mr Kenneth Chindedza, WHO Zimbabwe Technical Officer for Logistics and Supply Chain.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) will today host a career day aimed at exposing about 70 learners from Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Soweto, Tembisa, and Kempton Park to diverse career paths within the agency and the broader rail industry.

“During the day, the group of learners will have the unique opportunity to get first-hand experience of the manufacturing process of the new world-class modern blue and white trains, known as Isitime Sabantu, at the state-of-the-art Gibela Manufacturing plant, and ignite their curiosity in the production of trains,” PRASA said of Monday’s career day.

The learners will also hear from industry professionals from Gibela, the Gautrain and the Transport Education Training Authority, who will share their personal career experiences and opportunities in the rail sector.

In addition, PRASA teams from Human Capital, PRASA TECH, and PRASA CRES (Corporate Real Estate Solutions) will be present to provide further career guidance.

The PRASA Career Day marks the launch of PRASA’s commitment to community development initiatives, aimed at reaching the communities it serves, and the start of many more similar initiatives nationally.

The event is a collaborative effort with partners such as the Gibela Rail Transport Consortium, Gautrain, Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) and the City of Joburg.

Northern Cape records second-lowest HIV prevalence rate in SA

The Northern Cape had the second-lowest HIV prevalence at 8.9% in 2022, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) said on Monday. 

This means an estimated 120 000 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the province, which is 21 000 more PLHIV compared to 2017.

The information is based on the HSRC’s key findings of the Sixth South African HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI) for the Northern Cape.

SAnews reported last week that the Western Cape had the lowest HIV prevalence (7.4%) in 2022 and second lowest in 2017 (8.6%).

According to the overall principal investigator of the study, the HSRC’s Professor Khangelani Zuma, the survey showed that in 2022, HIV prevalence in the Northern Cape was 3.3% among those aged 15 to 24 overall, and higher among females (5%) than males (1.8%) in this age category. 

Among those aged 25 to 49, HIV prevalence was 12.6% overall, and higher in females (14.9%) than males (9.6%). 

HIV prevalence was also higher among those residing in urban areas (9.6%) and lower among those residing in rural informal or tribal areas (7.6%) and rural formal or farms (6.2%).

“HIV prevalence peaked at 25.7% among those aged 35 to 39 years in 2022 compared to 26.1% in 2017 among those aged 40 to 44. HIV prevalence increased from 24.3% among 30 to 34-year-olds in 2017 to 25.7% among those aged 35 to 39 in 2022. 

“There was a notable downward shift in the epidemic curve in 2022 among the age categories between 20 to 34 years,” Zuma said.

Antiretroviral treatment 

Data show that antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage in the Northern Cape increased from 54.9% in 2017 to 86.2% in 2022. 

This translates to an estimated 103 440 PLHIV in the province receiving ART in 2022.

In 2022, ART use among all PLHIV in the province was 82.6% among those between 25 and 49 years. 

Data for youth and adolescents aged between 15 and 24 years and among males aged between 25 and 49 could not be analysed owing to a small sample size.

The SABSSM VI survey, conducted between 2022 and 2023, aimed to maintain surveillance of HIV infection and behaviours in South Africa, evaluate the progress of the South African National HIV and AIDS, STI and TB Strategic Plan, and monitor HIV indicators for national and international reporting.

Knowledge of HIV status

Zuma expressed concern that PLHIV aged 25 to 49 accounted for the majority of PLHIV in Northern Cape who were unaware of their HIV status (62.4%), those who were aware of their HIV status but not on ART (72.7%) and those who were on ART with no VLS (73.1%).

However, adolescents and youth aged between 15 and 24 contribute disproportionally to gaps in treatment, accounting for just 8.1% of all PLHIV. 

People residing in urban areas accounted for the majority of PLHIV and most of those gaps along the clinical cascade. 

Sexual debut 

Regarding the key drivers of the HIV epidemic, Zuma noted that the Northern Cape had the second-lowest prevalence of early sexual debut among the nine provinces.

The proportion of adolescents and youth aged between 15 and 24 years who reported having sex before the age of 15 decreased from 11.4% in 2017 to 8% in 2022.

Sexual debut before the age of 15 among adolescents and youth between 15 and 24 years in 2022 was higher among males (10.2%) than females (5.1%).

Multiple sexual partners

The survey revealed that 11% of people aged 15 years and older reported having multiple sexual partners in 2022, compared to 8.4% in 2017.

The proportion of people aged 15 and older, who reported having multiple sexual partners was 11.2% higher among males compared to females (5.4%). 

The proportion who reported having multiple sexual partners was highest in urban areas, sitting at 9.2%. 

Condom use with recent sexual partner

Regarding condom use, the survey revealed that 30.4% reported using a condom with their most recent sexual partner in 2022, compared to 39.9% in 2017. 

Condom use with their most recent sexual partner among people aged 15 and older was higher among males (34.9%) than females (25.7%), and lower among those aged 25 to 49 (27.8%) compared to those aged 15 to 24 (64.3%). 

Condom use was substantially lower among those residing in rural formal or farm areas (14.6%) compared to those living in urban areas (32%). 

Condom use with their most recent sexual partner among people 15 years and older was 40.2% in Frances Baard.

Nationally, more than 70% of individuals aged 15 and older had never or sometimes used a condom with their most recent sexual partner. 

In the Northern Cape, a higher proportion (52.3%) also reported that they had never used a condom with their most recent sexual partner. Only 7.6% reported that they had used condoms almost every time.

Consistency of condom use with their most recent sexual partner among people aged 15 and older in the province was lowest among those aged 25 to 49 (15%) compared to adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 (41.2%). 

However, less than 50% of adolescents and youth reported using a condom sometimes or never using a condom. 

“We also recommend a continued focus on increasing coverage and demand for medical male circumcision among males aged 15 years and older. We must also enhance public awareness and uptake of effective HIV prevention measures, such as regular HIV testing, condoms and PrEP [pre-exposure prophylaxis],” said Zuma. – SAnews.gov.za

Out of the nine provinces in South Africa, the Western Cape had the lowest HIV prevalence (7.4%) in 2022 and second lowest in 2017 (8.6%).

According to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), this translates to 540 000 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the Western Cape, which was a decline from 560 000 PLHIV in 2017.

The information is based on the findings of the Sixth South African HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI) for the Western Cape, which was released by the HSRC on Thursday. 

According to the overall principal investigator of the study, the HSRC’s Professor Khangelani Zuma, the survey showed that in 2022, HIV prevalence in the province was higher among those aged 25 to 49 (10.8%) for both females (14.6%) and males (5.8%). 

Meanwhile, HIV prevalence was higher among females (9%) compared to males (5.6%).

“HIV prevalence peaked at 12.9% amongst those aged 35 to 39 in 2022 from 23.4% in 2017 within the same age group. 

“There was a decrease in HIV prevalence in 2022 among all age groups younger than 30 to 34 years compared to 2017, apart from the age groups zero to 14; 15 to 19, and those 50 years and older. 

“The worsening prevalence among those younger than 24 years is deeply concerning, as it shows continued new infections from both horizontal and vertical transmissions,” Zuma said.

SAnews reported last week that Mpumalanga now has the highest HIV prevalence at 17.4% in 2022, which translates to an estimated 890 000 (PLHIV) in the province, followed by KwaZulu-Natal.

Antiretroviral treatment

Antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage in the Western Cape increased to 76.8% in 2022, from 54.4% in 2017. 

This translates to an estimated 360 000 PLHIV in the province receiving ART in 2022.

In 2022, ART use among all PLHIV in the province was lower among those aged 15 to 49 (76.5%) compared to other age groups. 

ART use was also lower among males (75.3%) compared to females (77.1%). 

In addition, ART use was 76.2% amongst respondents who reside in urban areas and 81.4% in the City of Cape Town.

The SABSSM VI survey, conducted between 2022 and 2023, aimed to maintain surveillance of HIV infection and behaviours in South Africa, evaluate the progress of the South African national HIV and Aids, STI and TB Strategic Plan, and monitor HIV indicators for national and international reporting.

Viral load suppression (VLS)

The survey further revealed that in 2022, among all provinces, the Western Cape had the seventh highest proportion of PLHIV with VLS (78.4%), having increased from 2017 (54.6%).

Overall, VLS was also lower among males (76%) compared to females (79.7%). 

VLS was also lower among those aged 50 and older (69.4%) compared to other age groups. 

Knowledge of HIV status

The professor expressed concern that PLHIV between 25 and 49 years accounted for the majority of PLHIV in the Western Cape, who were unaware of their HIV status (59.1%); aware but not on ART (64.7%), and on ART but not VLS (66.7%). 

Adolescents and youth aged between 15 and 24 contributed disproportionally to gaps in treatment, accounting for just 9.5% of all PLHIV.

Regarding the key drivers of the HIV epidemic, Zuma noted that in the Western Cape, there was an increase in the proportion of adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24, who reported sex before the age of 15 in 2017 (14%), compared to 2022 (16.3%). 

Sexual debut before the age of 15 among adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 in 2022 was higher among males (21.5%) than females (11.3%).

Multiple sexual partners

The survey revealed that in the Western Cape, 6.7% of people aged 15 and older reported having two or more sexual partners in 2022 compared to 7.6% in 2017.

The proportion of people aged 15 and older who reported having multiple sexual partners was two-fold higher among males (8.9%), compared to females (4.4%), and higher among those aged 15 to 24 (19.1%) compared to other age groups.

Condom use 

The survey revealed that 22.1% reported using a condom with their most recent sexual partner in 2022 compared to 26.6% in 2017, representing a 4.5% decline. 

Condom use with their most recent sexual partner among people who are 15 years and older was higher among those 15 to 24 years (39.9%) and in the urban areas (22.5%), while it was similar by sex.

A higher proportion also reported that they had never or sometimes (81.4%) used a condom with their most recent sexual partner. Only 13.4% reported that they had used condoms almost every time.

Consistency of condom use with their most recent sexual partner among people aged 15 in the province was higher among youth aged 15 to 24 (24%). – SAnews.gov.za

NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum today announced the four prize-winning startup businesses from “NBA Africa Triple-Double Accelerator” (http://apo-opa.co/3ZLmNoC), which NBA Africa launched in April 2024 to support the continent's technology ecosystem and the next generation of African entrepreneurs.  The four winning businesses – Festival Coins (Nigeria), Salubata (Nigeria), HustleSasa (Kenya) and UBR VR (Egypt) – will be awarded financial support and mentorship, including an opportunity to participate in workshops and development programs facilitated by NBA Africa or its partners. 

The 10 finalists, shortlisted from more than 700 early-stage African startup businesses that applied to participate, pitched their products to a panel of international industry leaders at a Demo Day at the NBA headquarters in New York City yesterday. The judges included Accelerate Africa Co-Founder and CEO Iyinoluwa Aboyeji; NBA Assistant General Counsel, Technology, Software Licensing and Digital Platforms Franciscus Diaba; Managing Director, Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Rwanda Crystal Rugege; Chegg Inc. Executive Chairman Dan Rosensweig; and Partner at Development Partners International Joanne Yoo.  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also delivered opening remarks and met the 10 finalists.

Below are the four winning businesses:

  1. Festival Coins (Nigeria), an event technology company that offers a customizable, no-code event registration and ticketing platform called Tix Africa for events in Nigeria and Ghana, won the first-place prize and $50,000. 
  2. Salubata (Nigeria), a company that creates modular shoes repurposed from plastic waste to reduce the global carbon footprint through its environmentally friendly products, won the second-place prize and $40,000. 
  3. HustleSasa (Kenya), which provides live event services that support payment processing, attendee check-in, merchandise sales, customer data management, influencer tracking, and more, won the third-place prize and $30,000.
  4. UBR VR (Egypt), which delivers state-of-the-art, fully immersive, in-person virtual reality (VR) experiences across Egypt, won the fourth-place prize and $20,000.

The six other finalists each received a $10,000 prize. 

The Demo Day was supported by three official partners: Paystack Payment Ltd. (http://apo-opa.co/3XHn75j), Kuramo Capital Management (http://apo-opa.co/3ZGroJ2) and Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM) (http://apo-opa.co/3XHn1dX).

“NBA Africa Triple-Double Accelerator” is open to early-stage startups in Africa that develop solutions in event management and ticketing, youth development, AI, and digital marketing.

KZN reports second-highest HIV prevalence rate in SA

KwaZulu-Natal has recorded the second-highest HIV prevalence rate at 16% in 2022, down from 18% in 2017. 

According to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), this translates to 1 980 000 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in KwaZulu-Natal, which was a decline from 1 990 000 in 2017.

The information is based on the findings of the Sixth South African HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI).

SAnews reported last week that Mpumalanga now has the highest HIV prevalence at 17.4% in 2022, which translates to an estimated 890 000 (PLHIV) in the province.

According to the overall principal investigator of the study, the HSRC’s Professor Khangelani Zuma, the survey showed that in 2022, HIV prevalence in the province was higher among those aged 25 to 49 (31.1%), for both females (38.4%) and males (21.5%). 

HIV prevalence was also higher among those residing in rural formal or farm areas (20%).

“HIV prevalence peaked at 44.5% among those aged 45 to 49 in 2022 from 39.7% in 2017 among those aged 35 to 39, indicating a possibility of continuing infections among older people. HIV prevalence had decreased by 2022 among all age groups younger than 40 years compared to 2017,” Zuma said.

By district, in 2022, HIV prevalence was highest in uMgungundlovu (19.5%). 

The data presented are for eight priority districts within KwaZulu-Natal namely, eThekwini, Harry Gwala, King Cetshwayo, Ugu, uMgungundlovu, uThukela, Zululand and uMkhanyakude districts, as per the study protocol. 

Antiretroviral treatment 

Antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage in KwaZulu-Natal increased to 87.3% in 2022, from 71.2% in 2017. 

The ART coverage estimate translates to an estimated 1 609 000 PLHIV in the province receiving treatment in 2022.

In 2022, ART use among all PLHIV in the province was lowest among adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 (62.8%) compared to other age groups. 

ART use was also lower among both males (58.8%) and females (64%) in this age group compared to other age groups.

Among children aged zero to 14, ART use among males was 83.5% compared to females (65.9%). Among rural formal areas, ART use among males (93.3%) was comparable to females (93.6%).

The SABSSM VI survey, conducted between 2022 and 2023, aimed to maintain surveillance of HIV infection and behaviours in South Africa, evaluate the progress of the South African national HIV and AIDS, STI and TB Strategic Plan, and monitor HIV indicators for national and international reporting.

Viral load suppression 

On the viral load suppression, the survey further revealed that, in 2022, among all provinces, KwaZulu-Natal had the highest proportion of all PLHIV with VLS (86.8%), having increased from 2017 (67.8%). 

Knowledge of HIV status

The professor expressed concern that those aged between 25 and 49 accounted for the majority of PLHIV in the province (68.3%) who were unaware of their HIV status (54.5%), aware but not on ART (63.5%), and on ART but not virally suppressed (66.4%). 

“However, adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 contribute disproportionally to gaps in treatment, accounting for just 8.5% of all PLHIV, but 28.4% of those unaware of their HIV status, 19.1% of those aware but not on ART and 15.7% of those on ART but not virally suppressed.” 

Sex debut

Regarding the key drivers of the HIV pandemic, Zuma noted that, in KwaZulu-Natal, there was no change in the proportion of adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 who reported having sex before the age of 15 in 2017 (8.2%) compared to 2022 (8.6%).

However, sexual debut before the age of 15 among adolescents and youth between 15 and 24 years in 2022 was higher among males (12.3%) than females (4.8%). 

The survey revealed that 11% of people aged 15 and older reported having multiple sexual partners in 2022 compared to 9.4% in 2017. 

The proportion of people aged 15 and older who reported having multiple sexual partners was five-fold higher among males (18.6%), compared to females (3.5%), and 1.5-fold higher among those aged 15 to 24 (16.3%) compared to those aged 25 to 49 (10.9%). 

The proportion of people who reported having multiple sexual partners was highest in Harry Gwala (14.1%) and lowest in uThukela (7.6%).

Condom use

Regarding condom use, the survey revealed that 32.8% reported using a condom with the most recent sexual partner in 2022 compared to 44.9% in 2017, representing a 12.1% decline.

In KwaZulu-Natal, a higher proportion also reported that they never (45.2%) used a condom with their most recent sexual partner. 

“Only 9.3% reported that they used condoms almost every time.”

Meanwhile, consistency of condom uses with the most recent sexual partner among people aged 15 and older in the province was higher among adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 (26.7%) compared to those aged 25 to 49 (16.5%). 

“However, nearly 60% of youth reported only using a condom sometimes or never.”

Zuma recommended a long-term strategy to care for people in an ageing HIV epidemic as well as tailored interventions to address gaps in the “clinical cascade”.

“We also recommend a continued focus on increasing coverage and demand for medical male circumcision among males aged 15 and older. We must also enhance public awareness and uptake of effective HIV prevention measures, such as regular HIV testing, condoms and PrEP [pre-exposure prophylaxis],” Zuma added. – SAnews.gov.za
