Ruberto Scholtz, Sindiso Nyoni, Rowan Sakarombe and Botswana Metalheads From Southern Africa Join KFC Streetwise to Celebrate the Power of Influence and Inspiration

Location: News
KFC Africa

Cultural Creators from three of South Africa's neighbouring countries feature in KFC Streetwise's (https://Global.KFC.com/) new Original Feeds Original campaign, which celebrates the inspiration that feeds creativity.

Windhoek fashion designer Ruberto Scholtz, Harare visual director Rowan Sakarombe and the Botswana Metalheads feature in the campaign's epic TV commercial (https://apo-opa.co/43najWe), which stars Khuli Chana, Blxckie and 25K. The commercial's soundtrack (https://apo-opa.co/4irtnad) is a new song, the Originals Anthem, written and recorded by the rappers.

“Just as KFC's Streetwise brand takes its inspiration from the iconic taste of KFC's Original Recipe – while adding bucketloads of value for a new generation – the film depicts Khuli, Blxckie and 25K inspiring each other and those who will follow them,” says KFC Africa Chief Marketing Officer Grant Macpherson. “The Cultural Creators are part of the same powerful narrative.”

Scholtz, who made the suits Blxckie and 25K wear in the photoshoot scene in the TV commercial, is inspired by collaborations. “If you see someone who can do something well, why not work with them?” he says.

Sakarombe appears in the film shooting the Originals Anthem music video in the street with Khuli Chana, Blxckie and 25K. He says he's inspired by the “raw experiences of life around me” and the vibrant energy, constant motion and diverse cultures of cities.

The Originals Anthem inspires the Botswana Metalheads – whose music often contains local influences and whose style reflects cowboy culture - to infuse their originality and give it a heavy metal angle.

The campaign, which launches on 04 March 2025 across SADC regions, also features a packaging collaboration between KFC Streetwise and Cultural Creator Sindiso Nyoni, a Bulawayo-born illustrator who has built a stellar career after being inspired by an “original” – his high school art teacher, a retired graphic designer.

Making a mark

Macpherson says it's a time when young people are hungry to share their unique signature with the world. “Who better to feed their hunger than the originals who came before them?” he says.

“We want the Originals Anthem and all the activity around it to inspire all the young Africans trying to make their mark through their creativity and individuality.”

Khuli Chana says that as one of the legends of South African hip-hop, he's passionate about inspiring new artists. “The reason I started Maftown Heights in 2009 was to help rappers from Mahikeng find their footing in Joburg with a sound and language that wasn't mainstream at the time,” he says. “It led to great things and it's still giving new artists a platform. I love inspiring musicians to find their original sound.”

Blxckie says his career and development has been built on collaborations, and every one of them keeps him original. “Musicians lift each other up,” he says. “They support each other and make each other better at what they do.”

25K was introduced to rap by artists such as DJ Mojava, Ghetto Squad, and old school hip-hop groups Dead Prez and Outcast, and became an original by rapping in S'Pitori, a mixed language spoken in Pretoria.

“I want to be remembered for that and I want to inspire kids,” he says. “When I'm no longer here, I want to feel like I left something that will make it easier for another kid to come out of Pretoria.”

Other Cultural Creators who appear in the Original Feeds Original TV commercial include Kind Kid toymaker Sanele Qwabe, “Nail Pimp” Nailed Ntswembu, the Island Gals skateboarders and custom car pimper Ofentse Mphatsoe.

Passing the torch

The commercial begins with Khuli starting to write the Originals Anthem and ends with him as the OG, welcoming Blxckie and 25K on stage and handing the mic to them.

“It's the story of my life and it's the story of KFC Streetwise,” says Khuli. “Passing the mic is like passing the torch, and that's how Original Feeds Original.”

Director Sam Coleman says the 90-second video portrays the endless cycle of inspiration, in which each creator is galvanised by the ones before and motivates those who follow. “It's an explosive mix of visual eye candy, entertainment, musical reward, style, and unique brand integration that instantly hijacks your attention and eyeballs,” he says. “Everything about it is engaging, surprising and fresh.”

And there's an extra twist to the campaign, says Macpherson. “Every time someone streams the Originals Anthem, the money it earns will go to KFC Add Hope. It will be used to feed malnourished children throughout South Africa.

“Among the kids who benefit from Add Hope are the next generation of Khulis, Blxckies and 25Ks and the Cultural Creators of the future. So, anyone who listens to the anthem will be helping them on their way.”

The Originals Anthem is available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify (https://apo-opa.co/4irtnad), YouTube Music (https://apo-opa.co/4if2LsS) and Apple Music (https://apo-opa.co/43srwgO).

SA participates in expedition along the African coastline

Location: News

SA participates in expedition along the African coastline

The South African Environmental Observation Network (NRF-SAEON), a long-term environmental observation and research facility of the National Research, is participating in the Around Africa Expedition, the National Research Foundation said.

Led by global ocean exploration non-profit organisations, OceanX and the newly established Ocean Quest, Around Africa Expedition is a pioneering collaborative expedition along the African coastline and is an endorsed action programme of the United Nations Ocean Decade framework (2021-2030) for its contributions to capacity building and scientific understanding of the ocean.

“Its journey began on 30 January 2025 in Moroni, Comoros aboard OceanX’s state-of-the-art research and media vessel, OceanXplorer. The first leg of this expedition, conducted in collaboration with NRF-SAEON, aimed to map and conduct biodiversity surveys of Indian Ocean seamounts on the Madagascan Ridge and Agulhas Plateau,” said the National Research Foundation (NRF).

The guest science team onboard included established and early career researchers from South Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, Portugal, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

In its statement, the NRF said the measurement of both the physical features and biodiversity at these seamounts will advance scientific knowledge and help to guide informed decisions on conservation and restoration efforts in these remote ocean areas.

“Although these seamounts are located in the high seas, far from any human populations, their contribution towards serving as larval transport corridors are critical and can influence population connectivity across vast ocean distances, supporting ecosystem resilience and replenishment of fisheries in both deep-sea and coastal environments.”

South African benthic ecologist, Dr Lara Atkinson from NRF-SAEON is part of the team leading the exploration of seamounts, including Walters Shoal and the Africana II seamount.

“A seamount is an underwater mountain that rises from the seafloor but does not reach the ocean’s surface. Seamounts are formed primarily by volcanic activity, often at tectonic plate boundaries or hotspots.

“Their height can range from hundreds to thousands of meters, depending on the intensity and duration of volcanic activity. They play an important role in influencing ocean currents, creating nutrient-rich upwelling that supports diverse marine life, including plankton, corals, sponges, fish, and marine mammals,” said Atkinson.

Meanwhile, a group of Cape Town high school learners from Luhlaza, Ocean View, Bulumko, Masiphumelele and Usasazo High Schools had the privilege to join a live-streamed session from OceanXplorer on its journey towards Cape Town, as researchers onboard conducted a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) dive on Walters Shoal seamount.

The curious learners in attendance were fascinated by the live view of the seabed at a depth of nearly 500 m and this inspired them to ask many interesting questions to gain further insights about the science being conducted during the expedition.

Thabo Mbuyazi, a technician from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB), explained the importance of ensuring that all scientific equipment is maintained to the highest of standards to be able to collect data for researchers.

He introduced the learners and educators to the two submersibles onboard the vessel, Neptune and Nadir. These three-person submersibles hosted some of the research team during deployments to 500 m depths during the expedition. -SAnews.gov.za

Motsoaledi urges men to take the lead in fight against HIV, AIDS

Motsoaledi urges men to take the lead in fight against HIV, AIDS

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has urged men to actively participate in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

This as he kicked off a campaign aimed at enrolling 1.1 million individuals in HIV treatment by December 2025.

Statistics show that 65% of those tested in a 2010 campaign were women, underscoring the need for increased male participation.

“When you go to the clinic, you don't find men. Now, when we ask them, after realising that less than 30% of them are testing, they say, my wife has tested… please help women fight this battle,” the Minister urged attendees on Tuesday at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg.

He officially launched the campaign in collaboration with the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) and other stakeholders in the health sector.

The drive is part of the country’s ongoing interventions to enhance the uptake of life-saving HIV treatment to ensure 95% of people diagnosed with HIV receive and adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART) to achieve viral suppression.

South Africa has 7.8 million people living with HIV and AIDS, and 7.5 million of them know their status, while at least 5.9 million are on ARV treatment.

The country is making progress towards achieving the ambitious targets, but despite these remarkable achievements, significant challenges persist regarding prevention, treatment initiation, adherence to ART, and retention in care.

The gathering focused on the launch of a campaign to eliminate HIV and AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

The campaign also aims to build on past successes in eradicating diseases like smallpox and polio, emphasising the need for collective will and action.

The Minister urged action against tuberculosis (TB), citing the history of neglecting other diseases.

“We have known the existence of TB since 1882. But other diseases [we] were able to get rid of them. For instance, the world got rid of smallpox after it achieved 300 million people because there were campaigns to get rid of it. There was a vaccine, but that vaccine did not just get into the bodies of people. Men and women stood up and ran through the whole length and breadth of the world, the whole corner of the world and vaccinated people.”

He used the platform to urge everyone, particularly men, to take an active role in contributing to this important battle.

Motsoaledi also announced that the campaign aims to address cervical cancer. – SAnews.gov.za

Expanding digital access for learners

Expanding digital access for learners

As part of ongoing efforts to expand digital access, the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has launched a state-of-the-art Cyber Lab with 40 laptops and modern infrastructure designed to enhance digital learning, in Cape Town.

“Bridging the digital divide is not just about providing technology -  it’s about ensuring that young people have the skills and opportunities to use it effectively. This Cyber Lab ensures that learners from these communities are not left behind but are equipped to thrive in a digital future,” the Minister said on Tuesday.

The initiative, which is in partnership with the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), marks a significant step in expanding digital access for learners from Lansdowne, Khayelitsha, Langa, Philippi, Mitchells Plain and Nyanga.

A key element of this initiative is the broadband connectivity provided by the Western Cape Provincial Government, reinforcing the power of cooperative governance in expanding digital access and transforming education.

To ensure lasting impact, the initiative includes a structured digital literacy program for both teachers and students.

This training will equip learners with essential digital skills, including coding, website design, and other Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) capabilities - unlocking opportunities in software development, e-commerce, and the broader digital economy.

“By investing in both infrastructure and digital literacy - including coding, website design, and other high-demand digital skills - we are laying the foundation for more inclusive economic participation and future job opportunities in the tech sector.

“But this is not just about individual success. It is about uplifting communities. We want to see learners use these skills to help small businesses build a digital presence, support community initiatives, and create solutions that drive local development. Digital transformation must be inclusive, and it starts here - with young people using technology to shape a better future for themselves and those around them,” the Minister said.

This project aligns with the department’s commitment to ensuring that all South Africans have meaningful internet access by 2029. It also supports the department’s goal of equipping citizens with the digital skills necessary to participate in the digital economy. - SAnews.gov.za

Health Minister encourages adherence to ARV treatment

Health Minister encourages adherence to ARV treatment

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has appealed to people on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment to continue taking their medication amid reports that grant funding by the United States of America (USA) is under review.

The review of the grant funding is expected to affect the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programme, which is aimed at supporting HIV prevention, care and treatment. The programme supports several countries, including South Africa, to achieve HIV epidemic control.

Addressing members of the media on the sidelines of a two-day Cabinet Lekgotla, Motsoaledi said the country’s ARVs proramme will not be affected, as it is funded by the South African government and the Global Fund.

“For now, all HIV/AIDS programmes continue. As the South African government, we want to ascertain that nobody must stop taking ARVs because that will be devastating,” Motsoaledi said on Wednesday.

South Africa has 52 districts and of those, 27 districts are funded by PEPFAR.

“PEPFAR chose 27 of the most affected districts and these districts are in eight provinces, as they choose districts based on the burden of HIV/AIDS. The only province that is not included is the Northern Cape because it does not have any districts that are highly affected by HIV/AIDS,” the Minister said.

Of the 27 districts, seven of them are in KwaZulu-Natal; five are in the Eastern Cape, four are in Gauteng; three are in Mpumalanga and the North West, respectively; two are in Limpopo and one is in the Western Cape.

“The total number of people on the ground who are dealing with HIV/AIDS in those 27 districts is 271 606. Of the 271 606 people, 256 452 are funded by South Africa from the fiscus. That leaves us with 15 145 people, who will be affected by the withdrawal.

“Our biggest problems will be the salaries and the operational costs. That is what we are looking at with National Treasury,” Motsoaledi said.

Seventy-six percent of the funding for HIV/AIDS programmes is from South Africa. This constitutes 74% of funding from the government and 2% from the private sector.

“That leaves us with a gap that is filled by the Global Fund, which gives 7% and PEPFAR, which accounts for 17%. When you add the funds from the Global Fund and South Africa’s funding, that makes 83% and PEPFAR remains with the 17%. We are buying ARVs, together with the Global Fund,” the Minister said.

With reports indicating changes in the grant funding by the US, Motsoaledi said the government of South Africa has not received any communication on these changes.

“So far, we have not received a letter from the American government. These funds for the HIV/AIDS programmes come through National Treasury and they have not received a letter; the Department of Health and Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) have also not received a letter.

“We have tried to contact the US embassy and we couldn’t get them. The NGOs and the clinics that are funded by PEPFAR are the ones who have received letters,” the Minister said.

Out of the 63 million people in South Africa, 7.8 million people are HIV positive, with 5.5 million on ARVs.

In 2014, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) adopted the strategy of 95-95-95, which sets a target that 95% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) must know their HIV status; 95% of people diagnosed with HIV must receive antiretroviral therapy (ART) and 95% of people receiving ART must achieve viral load suppression (VLS).

“We are on 96%. That means 96% of people who have HIV in South Africa know their status but of those, 79% are on treatment and in that 79% who are on ARVs, 94% of them are virally suppressed. It means that they can no longer spread the virus, reducing the number of new infections.

“For us to reach the 95-95-95 targets by 2030 - because we want to eliminate HIV as a threat to human health - we need 1.1million people to be on treatment so we reach the target,” the Minister said. - SAnews.gov.za

Western Cape Education’s systemic test results surpass 2019 scores

Location: News

Western Cape Education’s systemic test results surpass 2019 scores

The Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) 2024 annual systemic test results  have indicated significant progress in children’s learning, with certain scores exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels.

“The pass rates for both Grade 9 mathematics and Grade 3 language are now higher than they were in 2019, with the remaining grades and subjects catching up quickly,” the department said in a statement.

The Western Cape is the only province in the country to conduct annual systemic testing in both mathematics and language for learners in Grades 3, 6, and 9.

These tests are internationally benchmarked and are administered, marked, and moderated externally to ensure objectivity and to provide a credible and relevant benchmark for evaluation.

“As a result, we have been well-placed to determine the impact of the pandemic on our children’s learning outcomes, as well as develop detailed strategies to reverse learning losses in the Western Cape.”

Headline results

According to the latest data, the pass rate for Grade 9 mathematics increased by 2.9 percentage points compared to 2023 and now exceeds the 2019 score by 0.7 percentage points.

“We also saw an increase of 4.3 percentage points for Grade 3 mathematics, and 1.1 percentage points for Grade 6 mathematics, compared to 2023. While the scores for these grades have not yet reached 2019 levels, the scores this year are nonetheless significantly higher than in 2021,” the statement read.

Grade 3 language scores increased by 2.9 percentage points compared to 2023, now exceeding the 2019 pass rate by 0.5 percentage points.

Meanwhile, the pass rate for Grade 6 language has increased by 4.0 percentage points compared to 2023, reducing the difference with 2019 scores to just 1.3 percentage points.

“Unfortunately, we have seen a decline in our Grade 9 language scores of 2.8 percentage points compared to 2023. Our officials will be looking into this result in detail to put remedial plans in place.”

Next steps

While the WCED has seen an improvement in scores, there is still work to be done, with an even greater focus on learning outcomes.

Schools will now receive individual school reports, to help them develop a tailored approach by identifying gaps in learning unique to their school’s circumstances.

The results will also be provided to curriculum officials, including those leading the #BackOnTrack programme interventions.

A key part of the #BackOnTrack programme is ensuring that interventions are refined over time to focus on the interventions that work and are sustainable.

“We will use the new data to analyse where we need to direct the programme’s resources and supplement the findings of the recent Stellenbosch University report on the effectiveness of our interventions.”

The department has thanked all the school staff, officials, tutors, and learners who have worked hard to improve learning outcomes over the past year and look forward to their support as they strive to give learners a better future in the Western Cape.

The WCED said no testing was conducted in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. – SAnews.gov.za

eThekwini invests millions to upgrade infrastructure

eThekwini invests millions to upgrade infrastructure

Just like many cities in South Africa, eThekwini is experiencing urban decay due to migration for economic opportunities, property abandonment, service delivery and crime.

These conditions were exacerbated, in part, by the catastrophic floods in 2022 that destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, communication and electrical systems.

To respond to the challenges of the municipality, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the eThekwini Presidential Working Group (PeWG) in April 2024.

The Working Group was established to accelerate support from national and provincial government to rebuild the municipality.

Since its establishment, the Working Group has provided support and fast-tracked efforts by the eThekwini municipality to improve service delivery, improve business confidence, and reposition eThekwini as an investment and tourism attraction.

The Working Group operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

Developing the informal economy

Last November, the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality announced plans to develop the informal economy sector by upgrading the infrastructure used by traders.

These projects include the R10 million upgrade of the Dalton Art and Craft Market, R15 million upgrade for the Mansel Road Market, R2.5 million upgrade for the Tongaat Trader Market, R4 million upgrade for the KwaMaKhutha Business Hive (Ward 94) and the R4.3 million upgrade for the Klaarwater Business Hive (Ward 17).

Traders at the Mansel Road Market were visited by Small Business Development Minister Stella-Ndabeni-Abrahams last year.

“The Minister handed over about 100 sewing machines, equipment for those running food handling facilities such as freezers, pots, gas stoves, and microwaves.

“This doesn’t happen anywhere on the continent where the government freely provides equipment to informal traders. This shows us that our government is taking care of us,” Chairman for Mansel Road Market Traders Mboneni Qwabe told SAnews during a visit to the site recently.

eThekwini Municipality Senior Manager for the Informal Economy, Michael Hlangu, said the Mansel Road Market was a hive of activity during weekends with customers coming from all over South Africa and other countries on the continent.
The retail market offers among others clothing, food stalls, traditional drums, bedding, and traditional attire.
About 180 traders operating at the market are expected to benefit from the refurbishment of the facility, which includes a new building with new ablution facilities, electricity, water and a parking area.

“We have 184 container traders. Some of the containers are dilapidated. We are planning to convert the containers into brick and mortar. We have appointed contractors for the project and the traders will be relocated this month to a new location so the construction of the project can commence.

“During the construction phase it is anticipated that about 100 people will benefit from job opportunities. All traders that are operating in this facility have been registered with the municipality.

“The majority of them have business licences and they renew them on an annual basis. The rental for the food section [is] R664 per month and they sign a lease agreement with the municipality. We regularly conduct training on health and safety to ensure that the vendors comply with the regulations and by-laws,” Hlangu explained.

The municipality is responsible for maintaining the facility, which includes providing security, cleaning services and electricity.

Making a difference

Qwabe said the municipality hosts business summits each year and updates traders on the work being done to uplift the informal economy.

“There is a lot of work that has been done to improve the operations of the traders. When this place was opened in 1996, there were no containers. People were selling from their cars under the carport, and this was changed to containers, but the containers have deteriorated over the years.

“The municipality has come to assist the traders as they are now building a new structure for us. We have seen the plan and it’s good. We will be able to attract tourists with the new building,” he said.

Qwabe further explained that Mansel Road Market is a hub for traditional attire.

“It’s unfortunate that tourists don’t visit this area. I don’t think that when they return to their home countries, they have enough to show that they were in South Africa.

“We are the Zulu kingdom and in the Zulu kingdom there are items that showcase the Zulu culture, and you will find them here. We have unique items that you won’t find anywhere else. We would like the market to be a tourist attraction,” Qwabe said. -SAnews.gov.za

Winnie Khumalo’s Passing a Sad Loss to South Africa’s Music Landscape

The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture has noted with deep sadness the passing of the art legend Winnie Khumalo on Tuesday. Ms Khumalo passed away after a short illness at 51.

Committee Chairperson Mr Joe McGluwa said Ms Khumalo's passing was a bad start to the year. “Ms Khumalo was a legend. It fills us with great pride that she has left us some good memories of her undeniable artistic abilities. The music industry benefitted greatly from her distinct voice and songwriting ability. The afro-pop music genre is poorer with her passing.”

Ms Khumalo supported so many legendary artists before she released her own albums, including the likes of Brenda Fassie. Mr McGluwa said this generation of artists should pick up the microphone and never let Ms Khumalo's star dim.

The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved Khumalo family and friends. “Go well, Ndlovukazi! Go well, Mntungwa. Who would ever forget the song ‘Baba kaMdudu,” said Mr McGluwa.

Gauteng delivers 203 New Year babies

Gauteng public healthcare facilities delivered 203 New Year babies on Wednesday.

The 105 baby boys and 98 baby girls were born between midnight and noon.

This as the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, visited the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, to welcome the newly born babies and deliver baby essential gift packages on 1 January 2025.

“Academic hospitals delivered 31 babies mostly from Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital with 20 babies, followed by Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Steve Biko Academic Hospital with four deliveries each.”

Meanwhile, tertiary hospitals delivered a total of 12 babies. Tembisa Hospital and Kalafong Hospital delivered six babies each.

“The department continues to urge all the mothers to ensure that the birth of their newly born babies are registered with the Department of Home Affairs offices that are in-house at health facilities across the province,” said the Gauteng Department of Health.

The department further urged mothers to prioritise immunisation and exclusive breastfeeding to promote the development of infants.

“As we celebrate the arrival of new life, it is imperative to highlight the vital role of immunization and exclusive breastfeeding in safeguarding the health of infants. All parents must prioritise immunisation to protect their children from preventable diseases.

Similarly, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months provides essential nutrients and strengthens their immune systems,” said the Gauteng MEC.

No. 1 Hair is number one in haircare

Location: News

No. 1 Hair is number one in haircare

By: Bongani Lukhele

In 1993 Andrew Lebitsa, a Free State Black Industrialist, participated in an empowerment and capacity building project that he said was initiated by South Africa’s first Black President, Nelson Mandela, and New York’s first Black Mayor, David Dinkins.

The objective of the programme was to develop a pool of black corporate bank managers to equip them with skills, knowledge and information that would empower them to play a critical role in the transformation of the banking industry after the country had transitioned to democracy.

Lebitsa spent six months at the Chase Merchant Bank and Baruch College in New York honing his corporate management skills in the bank and acquiring knowledge through the college’s Executive Management Development Programme.

At the time, little did Lebitsa know that he was bound to follow in the footsteps of the two visionary leaders and blaze his own trail, as he attests that his No.1 Hair company is the only black-owned hair braids manufacturing company in the country.

This was made possible by the support he received from the Black Industrialists Programme of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).

In line with the vision of Mandela and Dinkins, the objective of the scheme is to produce a pool of capable and successful Black Industrialists who will actively and meaningfully participate in the manufacturing industry and contribute to growing the economy, creating jobs and transform the sector in particular, and the country’s economy in general.

Today, No.1 Hair, which operates from the Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Harrismith, is providing employment to 60 people who are producing the synthetic hair braids, or hair extensions as they are commonly known, for both domestic and Southern African markets.

“After a long spell in the petroleum franchise and retail industries, I got into a hardware products import and distribution industry. Many of my retail clients requested me to import hair as well.  This was initially never in my mind. But after conducting a research I realised that it was a R9-billion industry in South Africa that these people were indirectly encouraging me to participate it. I decided to get into it,” recalls Lebitsa.

After bouncing off the idea with the late prominent businessperson, Don Mkhwanazi, he advised Lebitsa to consider setting up a plant and manufacture hair in South Africa, instead of importing it.

He connected him with two South Korean businessmen who assisted him to set up the factory in the Maluti-a-Phofung SEZ. The location was an obvious choice for Lebitsa as he once worked in the zone while he was employed by the Free State Development Corporation as a property manager.

“That is how No.1 Hair was born,"he said.

R60 million state-of-the-art plant

The R60 million state-of-the-art plant was set up with assistance from the dtic and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

“After a delay caused by the COVID-19 [pandemic], we eventually started the production of our brand of hair braids in January 2021. We started with black hair braids and extended our range to numerous other colours over a period of time,” said Lebitsa.

He concedes that penetrating the hair market as a black manufacturer has been and remains a steep challenge.

“Firstly, consumers of this product are used to particular famous brands that are all imported. It is not easy for them to warm up to and embrace a new, unknown product. Secondly, but more importantly; it is the problem of perception and stereotypes that one has to deal with in the industry.

“As a black manufacturer, you are already disadvantaged when approaching buyers who source products for big companies and retail stores.

Summer season

“From not even giving you a chance to present your products to them, to doubting both your capability as a businessperson to deliver on orders, and the quality of your products. It is a big challenge. However, one order at a time we have managed to build quite [a] sizeable number of clients,” he adds.

Lebitsa’s spirit lifts when he starts speaking about the summer season that he says sparks a high demand in hair braids. To this end, he has received huge amounts of orders that will soon see all of his production lines running at full capacity.

“Despite all these market penetration challenges, we are making steady progress and continue to grow the company.  Slowly but surely, we are increasing our own market share.

“We pride ourselves in being a proudly South African company whose products and raw material are produced in the country.

“We are hopeful that the Buy Local Campaign will instil patriotism in consumers of our products and enable them to choose locally-produced quality products instead of poor quality imports.”

He revealed that his plan is to expand his business by diversifying his product range and venturing into the manufacturing of hair care products. - SAnews.gov.za

STEM Lab launched at the University of Limpopo

Location: News

STEM Lab launched at the University of Limpopo

The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has officially opened a state-of-the-art STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Lab at the University of Limpopo.

“This STEM Lab represents hope, progress, and opportunity. For the youth in Mamotintane, Ga-Motholo, Mankweng, and surrounding communities, it is a gateway to skills in artificial intelligence, robotics, and data analytics,” Malatsi said on Saturday.

The facility, made possible through strategic partnerships with the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA), STEMpower, DHL and other key stakeholders, will empower students and the surrounding community with critical digital and STEM-related skills, equipping them for a future driven by technology and innovation.

“For educators, it is a chance to inspire the next generation of innovators. And for the unemployed, it is an opportunity to gain meaningful skills for employment or entrepreneurship.

“This lab is not just a resource for the university but for the entire community. It is proof of what we can achieve when government, academia, and industry work together to create sustainable, scalable solutions for digital inclusion,” the Minister said.

He said STEM forms the backbone of the modern economy, driving technological advancements, innovation, and economic growth.

“By equipping young people with STEM skills, we are preparing them to excel in high-demand fields like artificial intelligence, robotics and data analytics. Let us harness the power of STEM education to build a South Africa where technology serves as a bridge to inclusion and opportunity, ensuring that no one is left behind,” the Minister said.

The lab is part of a broader initiative by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies to expand access to affordable internet and devices, foster skills development, promote the productive use of technology, and position South Africa as a leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) investment destination.

The launch in Limpopo is one of several, with similar labs being established at Walter Sisulu University, King Hintsa TVET College, Ehlanzeni TVET College, and the Central University of Technology. -SAnews.gov.za

Location: News
MultiChoice Group

The Joburg Film Festival (JFF) in partnership with the MultiChoice Group (www.MultiChoice.com) is proud to announce the theme for the highly anticipated seventh edition of the festival - ‘The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories'. Set to take place from 11 – 16 March 2025, the festival will explore the profound interconnectedness of our shared human experiences and the timeless value of storytelling.

Guided by the festival's tagline, ‘Our Stories. Our Gold', JFF continues to embrace Joburg's identity as the “City of Gold”, with stories serving as the most precious treasures that illuminate our lives and reflect the collective wisdom of our diverse global communities.

Audiences are invited to explore the essence of connection as we celebrate ‘The Golden Thread'—an elegant reminder of the ties that bind us all, a recurring symbol that represents universal themes, emotions and truths found within the world's most compelling stories.

"We are pleased to present ‘The Golden Thread' as our theme for the next edition of the festival,” says JFF Founder Tim Mangwedi. “It represents the unbreakable link that storytelling forms between individuals, communities and cultures. Through our carefully curated selection of films, we aim to show how stories, much like threads, interlace to create a larger tapestry of shared human experience. This is a celebration of connectivity, of learning from one another, and of recognising the meaningful impact our stories can have on the world.”

The seventh edition will once again bring together filmmakers, industry professionals and audiences from across the globe to share their experiences and forge connections through the universal language of cinema. JFF remains committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity and the celebration of universal human stories.

The festival will feature over 60 local, African and international curated titles, including fiction and documentary feature-length films and shorts), with several notable world premieres already confirmed. A snippet of what's in store for film, art and culture lovers.

Starting here at home with Sebata, a gripping dark South African detective thriller directed by Norman Maake and Timmy the Kid, a rural-urban comedy from director Gray Hofmeyr, that boasts a star-studded local cast.

The Man Died is a powerful adaptation of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka's harrowing prison memoir directed by Awam Amkpa. Set against the backdrop of Nigeria's civil war, the feature narrates a tale of resistance, courage and the indomitable human spirit.

Directed by Lebanese national Mahdi Fleifel, To a Land Unknown follows two Palestinian cousin friends as they strive to escape their desolate environment before it's too late and is shot across five countries.

Under the Volcano, directed by multi award-winning author Damian Kocur, depicts the story of a Ukrainian stranded in Tenerife, Spain, after a vacation, as they learn of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Haitian born, Paris based director Rauol Peck, chronicles the life of Enerst Cole's journey as the first black freelance photographer in apartheid SA.

Ernest Cole: Lost and Found illustrates Cole's career, peerless artistry, political strength and a moving end.

"The seventh edition will once again bring together filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences from across the globe to share their experiences and forge connections through the universal language of cinema. JFF remains committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and the celebration of universal human stories. The Joburg Film Festival is a celebration of the stories that bring us together, reflecting our shared humanity and the unique perspectives that make us who we are. At MultiChoice, we are proud to partner with the festival to spotlight the richness of African storytelling, highlighting its power to connect, inspire, and transform. Through ‘The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories,' we embrace the idea that stories are our greatest treasures, weaving communities and cultures together with purpose and passion" says Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment, MultiChoice.

In addition to the film programme, the festival will feature a robust industry programme in Joburg Xchange (JBX), incorporating JBX Business (market), JBX Talks and JBX Youth.

JBX BUSINESS

The JBX Market has experienced remarkable growth since 2022, with 165 participants currently registered making it the fastest-growing pillar of the film festival. The market attracts a diverse range of attendees, including exhibitors, producers, content creators, festivals, buyers and investors.

Early registration is still open for interested participants via the JFF website.

JBX TALKS - Made in Joburg for Africa and the World

JBX Talks at JFF 2025 celebrate the unifying power of storytelling and the thriving film industry in Johannesburg, which resonates across Africa and the globe. We position Johannesburg as a vibrant nexus of African narratives that transcend borders and captivate international audiences.

The three-day industry programme offers dynamic panels, in-conversations, masterclasses, workshops and networking events. Participants may expand their reach, refine their craft, and unlock new opportunities that elevate African film and television on the world stage.

Festival badges which provide access to JBX go on sale with an Early Bird discounted price from Tuesday, 3rd December.

JBX YOUTH

JBX Youth is a new addition to the industry programme, running parallel to JBX Talks and JBX Business. It builds on the festival's anchor pillar focussed on the youth, the Youth & Audience Development Programme that is targeted at aspiring and up and coming content creators and filmmakers.

This 3-day programme will cover a range of topics and issues with the aim of developing, skill, empowering and nurturing the next generation of filmmakers to ensure the long-term growth, sustainability and viability of the industry.

YOUTH & AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

This initiative focuses on emerging talent and aspiring filmmakers aged 18 – 35 with the aim of equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in the film and television industry.

The Programme will launch at the Kagiso Archives Centre in February 2025, with an intense two-day workshop, offering a range of activities including film screenings, director Q&As, skills-building practicals, filmmaker forums and mentorship opportunities within the community. The programme will conclude at JFF, with the JBX Youth initiative, providing youth filmmakers with further exposure to the tools and resources they need to advance their skills and careers.

The annual Young Voices Competition which forms part of the programme which celebrates the creative talents of young filmmakers in South Africa makes its return. Under the theme ‘The Power of Sports in Film', submissions officially open on Tuesday 3rd December and entries will be accepted until mid-February 2025.

We believe that sports is a universal language, allowing everyone to participate at any level, whether competitively or just for the love of the game. The winner will be announced at the Golden Thread Gala awards ceremony in March 2025, with their film later showcased at the JFF Film Society later in the year.

South Africa remains committed to ozone protection and climate action

Location: News

South Africa remains committed to ozone protection and climate action

By Bernice Swarts

South Africa recently participated in the 36th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 36) in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Montreal Protocol, established in 1987, is a landmark global treaty aimed at protecting the ozone layer by phasing out ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Despite the Protocol’s successes, some ODS replacements, specifically hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), have emerged as potent greenhouse gases, some over a thousand times more powerful than carbon dioxide in driving climate change.

At MOP 36, South Africa reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating ozone-depleting substances. Central to our approach is our belief in the Montreal Protocol as a highly effective framework for reducing ODS while offering significant co-benefits for global climate health. We celebrated the recent decision to allocate $1 billion to the Multilateral Fund to help developing nations meet their Protocol obligations, showcasing the international community’s dedication to this critical cause.

As one of Africa’s most industrialised nations, South Africa recognizes its role as a leader in climate action. Our national action plan emphasizes transitioning the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) sector towards greener refrigerants and energy-efficient systems. This shift is directly aligned with global climate goals, creating jobs and enhancing sustainability within South Africa’s industrial landscape. By managing refrigerants effectively, we can contribute to reducing global warming by 0.5°C, proving that industry-specific actions can have impactful climate outcomes.

South Africa is also committed to the full life-cycle management of refrigerants, ensuring that substances are properly controlled, recovered, recycled, or reclaimed.

During MOP 36, we showcased South Africa’s commitment to sustainable practices by training hundreds of technicians, particularly young people, in energy-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies. Our government – through the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) – and various stakeholders aim to train1 600 more young people in energy-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies in the near future. This investment in local capacity reflects our dedication to minimising environmental impact over the long term.

South Africa also used its participation at the MOP 36 to raise an issue of continental significance: the lack of sufficient monitoring facilities across Africa. Our country operates three monitoring stations through its Weather Services, but there is an urgent need for additional resources to expand this capability. We called for financial assistance to establish more state-of-the-art monitoring stations across Africa, enhancing the global repository of scientific data for tracking and managing emissions. This call for support underscores Africa’s crucial role in contributing to a global climate response.

South Africa has also made significant progress in phasing out methyl bromide, a highly ozone-depleting substance, showcasing our commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.

Another critical issue addressed at MOP 36 was the healthcare sector’s reliance on ozone-depleting substances, particularly in metered-dose inhalers. We urged a shift to greener alternatives, emphasizing the dual importance of public health and environmental protection.

South Africa’s experience also demonstrates the value of strict regulatory enforcement to prevent illegal trade in controlled substances and low-efficiency products. By investing in customs training to detect illegal trade, South Africa is addressing an often-overlooked aspect of environmental governance: the importance of preventing leakage through illicit imports and exports that could undermine international agreements. Our proposal included a two-pronged approach—strict regulations and penalties for non-compliance—aimed at helping all nations meet their environmental goals.

During my remarks at MOP 36, I called for the ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, urging all nations to take action against climate-warming HFCs. This appeal highlights the interconnected nature of environmental challenges and the importance of collective global action. The Montreal Protocol stands as a model for effective international cooperation, and South Africa’s call for universal ratification underscores our commitment to preserving and extending its benefits.

I do want to stress that South Africa’s presence at MOP 36 was a powerful reminder of the urgency of climate action. Through robust national initiatives and a vision for global cooperation, we called on the world to strengthen efforts in environmental protection, ozone layer preservation, and climate change mitigation for future generations. Our actions and commitments reflect a roadmap for immediate impact and a testament to the resilience needed to secure a sustainable future for all and for future generations.

These include document upload assistance, Prime Time for application submission outside of business hours, SMS notifications, document checking service, and courier return of the passport once a decision has been made. VFS Global's Keep My Passport While Applying service allows customers in all these locations to keep their passport once their application is submitted and biometrics have been enrolled. Customers will only need to re-submit their passport if a visa is issued.

Customers in Cameroon, Tanzania, and Uganda can also submit their UK visa applications from the comfort and safety of their home, office, or any other preferred location with our On Demand Mobile Visa service. In addition, our Premium Lounge service offers a personalised submission experience with dedicated staff members, which is available in Ethiopia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. The services can be booked in advance on www.VFSGlobal.com or at the Visa Application Centre at the time of the appointment. These services are completely optional and have no bearing on the processing timeline and outcomes of visa applications.

In the African region, VFS Global will provide Visa Application Centres for the UK in 31 countries. Under the new contract, VFS Global is already operating UK Visa Application Centres in nine other countries across Sub Saharan Africa since October 2024, including South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana.
