ESPN Africa Secures Exclusive NBA Finals Rights for English Pay TV Across Sub-Saharan Africa

Location: Sport
ESPN

ESPN Africa (www.ESPN.com) has secured exclusive multiyear English pay TV broadcast rights to the NBA Finals across sub-Saharan Africa, strengthening the channel's world-class basketball offering and bringing fans even closer to one of the biggest sporting spectacles on the planet.

The rights package also includes coverage of additional NBA Sunday Night regular season games each season, both Conference Finals each year, as well as exclusive rights to the NBA Finals.

The 2026 NBA Finals will be played between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs in the customary best-of-seven format. The Knicks swept the Eastern Conference Finals 4 - 0 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, while the Spurs won a dramatic seven-game Western Conference Finals series 4 - 3 against Oklahoma City Thunder.

All games will air live across ESPN (Azam 120, DStv 218, StarTimes 248, Wananchi / Zuku TV 712, ZAP 31) and ESPN2 (Azam 121, DStv 219, StarTimes 249, Wananchi / Zuku TV 713, ZAP 32), as well as on Disney+ in South Africa. In addition to the live broadcasts, repeat airings are scheduled during the day, giving fans maximum flexibility and multiple opportunities to catch the action.

The road to NBA glory begins

The 2026 NBA Finals are scheduled to run from Wednesday, 3 June to Friday, 19 June should the series go to a decisive Game 7. All games will tip off at 02:30 CAT, with ESPN bringing African audiences every dramatic moment as it happens, live, from the United States.

The NBA commands a massive, passionate global following, with millions of fans across Africa closely following the league's biggest stars, rivalries and defining moments. From sold out arenas and iconic franchises to viral highlights and superstar athletes, the NBA has become one of the most recognisable sporting brands in the world.

Last season saw the Oklahoma City Thunder crowned NBA champions after defeating the Indiana Pacers 4-3 in the Finals, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander named the Finals Most Valuable Player.

African stars continue to play a major role in the NBA's global growth and popularity, with players including Cameroon's Pascal Siakam and Joel Embiid, South Sudan's rookie Khaman Maluach and global sensation Victor Wembanyama all helping to fuel the league's growing fan base across the continent. Wembanyama, who has ties to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has rapidly become one of the NBA's most exciting young superstars, captivating fans worldwide with his remarkable skill, athleticism and larger-than-life presence on court.

A new era of basketball on ESPN Africa

The addition of the NBA Finals rights further expands ESPN Africa's growing basketball portfolio alongside its broad range of premier international sporting content.

Kyle De Klerk, Director of Sports at The Walt Disney Company Africa, says the acquisition marks an exciting moment for basketball fans across the region. “The NBA is one of the biggest and most celebrated sports properties in the world, with an incredibly passionate fan base across Africa. We are thrilled to bring audiences exclusive access to the NBA Finals over the next three seasons, alongside the Conference Finals and Sunday Night games. From superstar players and unforgettable rivalries to dramatic playoff moments, this is world-class basketball entertainment at its very best.”

– Collaboration Supports BAL's Social Impact and Court Development Programming Across Africa –

– 2026 BAL Season Will Continue with Playoffs and Finals in Kigali, Rwanda from May 22-31 –

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) (http://BAL.NBA.com) and Qatar Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that supports human and social development through programs focused on education, research and innovation, and community development, today announced a multiyear collaboration that makes Qatar Foundation the BAL's first Official Community Partner.

Through the collaboration, which is being facilitated by Qatar Sports Investments, Qatar Foundation is supporting the BAL's social impact programming and efforts to make basketball more accessible across the continent, including through court renovations as part of NBA Africa's broader commitment to build 1,000 courts across the continent, and BAL4HER – the league's platform for advancing gender equality in the African sports ecosystem.

As part of the collaboration, Qatar Foundation will also serve as Presenting Partner of the BAL's Ubuntu Trophy, which is awarded annually to a BAL player who has made an impact on the local community during the BAL season.  Qatar Foundation's logo is also displayed on the back of all BAL game uniforms.

“At Qatar Foundation, we believe that the true strength of a nation lies in the wellbeing and potential of its people,” said Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani.  “We see sport as one of the most powerful tools for positive change. It is not only a means of physical activity, but a catalyst for healthier lives, stronger communities, and more resilient societies. It brings people together, creating bonds across backgrounds and building communities around shared purpose.

“Our vision is to harness this power of sport for good, ensuring that it is accessible, inclusive, and designed to meet the needs of all.  We are committed to creating environments where participation is safe, welcoming and inspiring, and where the values of teamwork, discipline and leadership are nurtured.”

“Qatar Foundation shares our commitment to giving back to the youth, fans and communities that support the BAL year-round,” said BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall. “This collaboration will enhance our ongoing social impact programming that uses the power of basketball to positively impact lives across the continent.”

Beginning this season, Qatar Foundation is supporting BAL4HER Power Hours in each BAL host city, which connects young women pursuing careers in the sports industry with leading executives and practitioners through structured conversations, networking and immersive programming – creating a platform for visibility, relationship-building and professional advancement within the African sports ecosystem.

The collaboration builds on Qatar Foundation's broader work in harnessing sport for social development alongside Qatar Sports Investments – a leading strategic investment group in sports, culture, entertainment and lifestyle – reinforcing a shared commitment to using sport as a platform for opportunity, inclusion and long‑term community impact.  Qatar Foundation leads and supports sport-for-development programs, including in Africa, that prioritize agency and ownership, culturally grounded delivery, safeguarding, and active community participation, with its sport-focused efforts in Qatar, the Middle East and North Africa region, and internationally having a particular emphasis on enabling and empowering sporting participation among women and girls.

Beyond the Court: The Kalahari Conference Solidifies Its Status as Africa’s Premier Sports & Lifestyle Destination

Location: Sport
Basketball Africa League (BAL)

While the action on the court reached fever pitch, the sidelines of the Kalahari Conference proved that the Basketball Africa League (BAL) (www.BAL.NBA.com) is far more than a sports league—it is one of the continent's most anticipated cultural event. Over the past ten days, Pretoria transformed into the ultimate cultural crossroads, attracting a "who's who" of African entertainment, fashion, and business.

A Historic East African Takeover

History was made as Tanzania's first-ever participating team, Dar City, led by Captain and NBA veteran Hasheem Thabeet, took to the court. The support from Dar es Salaam was bolstered by a high-profile delegation, including Club President Mussa Mzenji, Bongo Flava superstar Harmonize, and visionary businessman Sallam SK. Their presence brought an unmistakable East African energy to the SunBet Arena, reinforcing the BAL's role as a unifying force for Africa's creative and sporting industries.

Adding to the prestige, BAL Champion and hitmaker Bien-Aimé Baraza joined the final weekend of competition. With his latest hit "Finale" currently dominating charts as the #1 song in South and East Africa, his presence underscored the league's deep connection to the pulse of African music.

A "Triple-Double" of Star Power

The entertainment lineup kept the SunBet Arena electrified throughout the conference:

  • The Amapiano & Rap Elite: A non-stop rotation of South Africa's hottest artists—including Nasty C, Young Stunna, Usimamane, Scott Maphuma, Ciza, Toss, and Kamo Mpela—quite literally tore the arena to pieces with high-octane performances.

  • The Global Sound: International tastemaker Smallgod was joined by Uncle Vinny, Uncle Cool, and Harmonize, turning the arena into a pan-African celebration of sound.

  • The Pretoria Takeover: Local heroes EEQue and Ch'cco brought the house down on the final game day, concluding ten days of basketball celebration with a definitive hometown anthem.

Courtside Glamour: The "Place to Be"

The Kalahari Conference was officially the season's most coveted invite, featuring a rotating guest list of influential figures:

  • Icons of Screen & Style: Nomzamo Mbatha, Pearl Thusi (attending with daughter Thando Mokoena), Ama Qamata, Natasha Thahane, Hope Mbhele, Cedric Fourie, Kwenzo Ngocobo, and Kim Jayde.

  • Media & Digital Royalty: Tbo Touch, DJ Speedsta, Sinaye Kotobe, Robert Marawa, Thando Thabethe, Duma Ntando, Unarine Ramban, Primo Baloyi, Sally “6Lingg” Lin, Celeste Ntuli, Siv and Bruce.

  • The New Wave: Robot Boii (a staple throughout the conference), Liema Phatsi, Annie Mtembu, Juicy Jay, and Qhawe Mazaleni.

  • Football Royalty: Kaizer Chiefs executive Jessica Motaung, Linda Mntambo, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Lebohang Maboe and Fortune Makaringe.

  • Love & Basketball: Power couples Tino Chinyani & Simphiwe Ngema, along with Prince Grootboom & Rorisang Mohapi Grootboom, brought a touch of romance to the front row.

Setting the Benchmark

From "Tunnel Walks" showcasing player fashion to the star-studded front rows, the Kalahari Conference has set a new benchmark for how sports drive the lifestyle conversation in Africa. As the league prepares for the Sahara Conference in Rabat and the highly anticipated Finals in Kigali, the message remains clear: the BAL is the continent's most vibrant lifestyle platform.

  • Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Tournament Will Expand to Include Nearly 150 Boys' and Girls' Teams from More than 50 Private Schools in Alexandria and Cairo

NBA Africa (www.NBA.com) and Senyorita For Food Industries, a leading manufacturer of snack foods in Egypt, through its chip brand Lion, yesterday announced a collaboration to launch the NBA's first university basketball tournament on the continent and the largest Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA tournament ever in Egypt.

The announcement was made by Senyorita Chief Operating Officer Sherif El Nokaly and Head of NBA Egypt Mohamed Motaleb-Abdel Soliman at a signing ceremony in Cairo.

The NBA REC University Tournament will feature 3-on-3 competition between men's and women's teams from 40 public and private universities across five cities: Alexandria, Assyiut, Cairo, Giza and Mansoura.  Operated by Events Plus, the league will tip off in April and conclude with the playoffs and finals in Cairo in May.

Lion joins existing partners Allianz and Maven Developments as Official Partners of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA tournament in Egypt, which this year will expand to include nearly 150 boys' and girls' teams of youth ages 14 and under from more than 50 private schools in Cairo, and for the first time, Alexandria.  The expanded tournament – also operated by Events Plus – tipped off in Dec. 2025 with the Eastern Conference in New Cairo and the Western Conference in New Giza and will culminate with the playoffs in February and finals in April.

“Our collaboration with the NBA aligns perfectly with our mission to bring people together,” said Nokaly.  “Whether it's families, fans, or young athletes, we're proud to support and inspire athletic communities through both great snacks and great moments.”

“Our collaboration with Senyorita is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to create more opportunities for Egyptian youth to learn and play basketball,” said Soliman.  “The NBA REC University Tournament and Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA tournament will provide structured environments for aspiring players across the country to progress in their development while learning important values like teamwork, leadership and respect.”

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA, the league's global youth basketball program for boys and girls, teaches the fundamental skills and core values of the game – teamwork, respect, determination and community – at the grassroots level in an effort to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents.  Last year, Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA programming reached more than 390,000 youth in more than 40 countries across Africa.

Location: Sport
Basketball Africa League (BAL)

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) (https://BAL.NBA.com) and Wave Côte d'Ivoire (Wave), Africa's fastest-growing mobile money platform, today unveiled a newly renovated basketball court at 4 Paniers (Four Baskets) in the Yopougon district of Abidjan.  The renovated court is part of the BAL and Wave's collaboration to bring communities in Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal closer to the game and supports NBA Africa's commitment to build or renovate 1,000 basketball courts on the continent over the next decade.

The court was unveiled by Wave Côte d'Ivoire General Manager Katier Bamba and BAL Head of League Operations Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje at a ceremony at Yopougon 4 Paniers, which was followed by a basketball clinic for 50 boys and girls ages 16 and under from local schools and a U-23 3-on-3 tournament for male and female players.

“The renovation of this court reflects our commitment to working with partners like Wave to empower the youth of Africa,” said Boumtje-Boumtje.  “Over the past year, our joint efforts with Wave, including hosting tournaments and creating safe spaces for young boys and girls to learn and play the game, will leave a lasting and meaningful impact in communities across Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal.”

“Taking part in the project of renovation of this basketball court alongside the BAL reflects Wave's mission to support and invest in the communities we serve,” said Bamba.  Basketball is a powerful force for connecting communities, and we are proud to contribute to the creation of modern, accessible spaces where young people can learn, play, and thrive.  This project is not just about renovating a court, but also about building confidence and inspiring the next generation for an even stronger Côte d'Ivoire tomorrow.”

Since their collaboration launched in March 2025, the BAL and Wave held “Tournoi des Quartiers” basketball tournaments in Abidjan and Dakar, Senegal featuring a 1,000,000 CAF prize for each winning team and provided an all-expenses paid trip for Reine Esther Yao from the U-18 Côte d'Ivoire Women's National Team to attend the 2025 BAL Finals in Pretoria, South Africa, in June.

Africell Expands Multi-year Collaboration with NBA Africa

Location: Sport
National Basketball Association (NBA)

The brand collaboration between Africell, Africa's only U.S.-owned mobile network operator, and NBA Africa (https://Africa.NBA.com/) in Angola has taken a leap forward with the widening of its scope to include all four of Africell's African operating markets with the addition of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), The Gambia and Sierra Leone.

Launched in 2022, the collaboration between Africell and NBA Africa in Angola has already seen thousands of young Angolans given opportunities to learn and play the game. Basketball has a rich history and broad popular appeal in the country of over 30 million people, and Africell and NBA Africa have nurtured a new generation's passion for the sport through a wide-ranging programme, including Jr. NBA tournaments, clinics and a court refurbishment.

Building upon the momentum established through the collaborative efforts in Angola to date, Africell and NBA Africa will roll out the initiative to the DRC, The Gambia and Sierra Leone. While distinct in many ways, each of these countries has a young and highly active population craving opportunities to participate in high-quality organised sports.  The expanded collaboration will introduce a Jr. NBA league in Angola, which will tip off next month, and will be followed by clinics and 3-on-3 tournaments in Angola, the DRC, The Gambia and Sierra Leone in 2026.

Sports and healthcare are key impact areas of the Africell Impact Foundation, and the collaboration between Africell and NBA Africa across Africell's four operating markets aims to deliver meaningful social impact while also supporting Africell's commercial strategy by growing its customer base and engaging new audiences.

“It is difficult to overstate the magnetic pull that the NBA brand enjoys in Africa,” says Ziad Dalloul, CEO, president and founder of Africell Group. “Not only does the NBA name have associations with legendary teams and star athletes, but it also stands in the minds of many for the values of aspiration, hard work and excellence. Africell is thrilled to be expanding its collaboration with NBA Africa to DRC, The Gambia and Sierra Leone for the first time, and we look forward to sharing the stardust with our many young customers.”

Clare Akamanzi, CEO of NBA Africa, says: “Our collaboration with Africell in Angola has shown us firsthand how basketball can inspire, empower and transform the lives of youth. Building on that success, we are excited to expand into the DRC, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone – countries where Africell is already deeply rooted, where there is strong affinity for basketball, and where together we can make a meaningful and lasting social impact.”

Through the Africell Impact Foundation, Africell invests in and supports initiatives that provide benefits to our operating markets and the wider region in the areas of sports, health and wellbeing; education and entrepreneurship; and arts, culture, and heritage. Our ambition is to narrow Africa's opportunity gap by linking people to the digital and physical resources they need to engage fully in community life at a local, national and international level.

BWB Africa 2025 will bring together 60 of the top male and female players ages 18 and under from across Africa to learn directly from current and former NBA, WNBA and FIBA players, legends and coaches and compete alongside their peers from across the continent.  The campers and coaches, who will be announced prior to the camp, will also take part in life-skills, leadership development and social responsibility programming.

“Basketball Without Borders Africa continues to provide a platform for top young players from across the continent to continue their development and reach the highest levels of the game,” said NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi.  “We look forward to bringing this year's camp to East Africa at a time when there is incredible momentum around the game in the region.”

“Basketball Without Borders plays a pivotal role in the region's basketball development, providing top young talent with access to elite coaching and valuable growth opportunities,” said FIBA Head of Players Unit, Kimberley Gaucher.  “Hosting this edition in Rwanda is particularly significant, as the country has established a strong footprint in African basketball over recent years, having hosted a FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying tournament last year, celebrated four Basketball Africa League Playoffs and Finals from 2021-2024, and also as host for both the boys' and girls' FIBA U-16 AfroBasket tournaments and a Regional Youth Camp this year, further underscoring its growing prominence on the continent.”

BWB Africa 2025 will be supported by Nike, a global partner of BWB since 2002, which will outfit participants with Nike apparel and footwear.

BWB has reached more than 4,600 participants from 144 countries and territories since 2001, with 142 former campers drafted into the NBA and WNBA or signed as free agents.  Fourteen former BWB Africa campers have been drafted into the NBA and WNBA since the first BWB Africa camp in 2003, including 2023 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2011), 2019 NBA champion Pascal Siakam (Indiana Pacers; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2012) and 2025 No. 10 overall pick Khaman Maluach (Phoenix Suns; South Sudan; ties to Uganda; BWB Africa 2023).  Seventy-two former BWB Africa campers have been featured on Basketball Africa League rosters over the league's first five seasons.

NBA Africa Launches Second Edition of Triple-Double Startup Accelerator

Location: News, Sport
National Basketball Association (NBA)

  • Early-Stage Startups in Africa Can Apply to Participate Through Aug. 29
  • ServiceNow Joins as Official Partner

NBA Africa (https://Africa.NBA.com) today announced the second edition of the startup accelerator program that the league launched last year to support the continent's technology ecosystem and the next generation of African entrepreneurs.

NBA Africa Triple-Double Accelerator, which awards financial support and mentorship to early-stage African startup companies that develop solutions in the sport and creative industries, will once again be operated by ALX Ventures, a leading technology incubator that provides the continent's tech leaders with access to the skills and tools to launch and scale their startups. NBA Africa also announced ServiceNow, an AI platform for business transformation whose Now Assist and AI agents help organizations deliver faster and smarter experiences at scale, as an Official Partner of the program.

Beginning today through Friday, Aug. 29, startups can apply to participate at https://TripleDoubleAccelerator.NBA.com, after which the submissions will be narrowed down to a top 10. The shortlisted startups will then participate in a 10-week mentorship program where they will be paired with mentors comprised of NBA Africa, ServiceNow and ALX leadership, as well as other corporate stakeholders, who will provide guidance to the companies with a focus on product development, business growth and go-to-market strategy.  The startups will then pitch their products to international industry leaders at the program's second Demo Day in December, where the top five prize-winning companies will be selected to receive financial support and mentorship.

“Last year's inaugural Triple-Double Accelerator program showed how much talent, passion and creativity there is among African entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of the continent's rapidly growing sport and entertainment industries,” said NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi. “We look forward to reviewing this year's submissions and to helping another round of promising startups take the next step in their development.”

Last year, more than 700 early-stage African startups applied to the program. Ten finalists were then selected to pitch their products to a panel of international industry leaders at the program's first Demo Day at the NBA headquarters in New York City, after which four prize-winning companies – Festival Coins (Nigeria), Salubata (Nigeria), HustleSasa (Kenya) and UBR VR (Egypt) – were awarded financial support and mentorship.

Additional information about the Demo Day in December will be announced at a later date.
