Have your say in eThekwini service delivery plan

Have your say in eThekwini service delivery plan

Residents of eThekwini are invited to submit their comments on the draft Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the 2024/2025 financial year - a key city strategy that informs and guides all service delivery and development in the region.

All planning, including budgeting, management and decision-making related to delivering services and development in the municipal area, is considered in this important city business plan.

“The IDP considers the challenges facing the city and the strategic approach to resolving these as underpinned by city’s long-term development plan and informed by global, national and provincial policies such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the National Development Plan (NDP) and the provincial Growth and Development Strategy,” the municipality said in a statement.

The IDP consists of eight plans that will help the city achieve its vision of becoming Africa’s most caring and liveable city.

“These plans are all inter-related and include actions to develop and sustain our spatial, natural and built environment; develop a prosperous, diverse economy and create employment; and creating a quality living environment.

“The IDP also takes into consideration building a socially cohesive environment, developing the skills of our communities, fostering good governance, ensuring a financially accountable and sustainable city,” the municipality highlighted.

The municipality added that each plan has a set of deliverables which informs the city’s budget and with which its performance is monitored.

“A Service Delivery Budget Implementation Plan (SDBIP) is thereafter compiled to monitor the implementation of the various programmes and projects contained within each plan. The SDBIP provides both financial as well as non-financial performance indicators which are used to monitor and evaluate quarterly and yearly service delivery targets,” the municipality said, adding the document also forms part of the IDP.

The municipality said public consultations on the draft plan will be taking place together with the draft budget.

“It is a critical opportunity for the public to provide input into the future development of the city and make sure that their community needs are raised.”

The draft IDP is available on the municipality’s website: durban.gov.za.

Extradition request sent to Eswatini for alleged AKA killers

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola has transmitted a request by South Africa for the extradition of brothers Siyabonga and Malusi Ndimande from the Kingdom of Eswatini.

The two are wanted back in South Africa because of their alleged involvement in the murder of South African musician Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes.

Forbes was slain in a brazen attack outside a Durban restaurant in February last year.

“The request is made in terms of the Extradition Treaty between South Africa and Eswatini, dated 4 October 1968, and in terms of the SADC Protocol on Extradition dated 3 October 2002, to which both countries are signatories. The Ministry stands ready to give its highest level of co-operation to its counterparts in the Kingdom of Eswatini,” the department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services (DSC) says it is investigating a case of assault filed by controversial doctor Nandipha Magudumana.

Magudumana is currently being held at the women’s section of the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre in Kroonstad in connection with the escape of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester.

“DCS is investigating the circumstances following what was said to be a prayer meeting in a different cell from Magudamana’s. Reports of an alleged altercation and a push against the grills can be confirmed.

“DCS officials advised Magudumana to open a criminal case when she reported that she was allegedly assaulted, but she opted to discuss it with her lawyers first. Furthermore, DCS Healthcare officials conducted an examination on her and found no visible injuries.

“The safety and well-being of inmates is our utmost priority, and we take such allegations seriously. Hence, this incident is under investigation,” the DCS said. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN police officers commended for tracking down police killer

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has commended the multi-disciplinary team of police that tracked down a suspected police killer at Clermont informal settlement in Durban.

The suspect, who was wanted for the killing of an off-duty police officer over the weekend, died during a shootout with the police officers in Clermont on Monday afternoon.

KZN police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker, said the police officer from Durban Central SAPS and his colleague from KwaDabeka SAPS who were off duty, were visiting a private residence in Clermont in the early hours of Sunday when they were attacked in their vehicle.

“The deceased constable (34), who was the driver, was killed before he was robbed of his firearm, while his colleague (35), who was also robbed of his firearm, was left unharmed. The two suspects fled the scene with both policemen’s firearms, as well as a wallet and cellphone,” Naicker said.

Naicker said that following an around the clock investigation that began after the shooting, police received information that one of the killers was at an informal settlement in Clermont.

“As police officers approached the suspect’s residence, they were met with gunfire. The suspect, who is in his 30s, sustained fatal injuries following the shootout. Two firearms were recovered from the suspect’s possession.

“Investigations are ongoing to trace his accomplice. Detectives are also working on information that the deceased suspect is linked to a string of murders, robberies and carjackings,” Naicker said.

The Provincial Commissioner has thanked the team who left no stone unturned after they heard that their colleague was killed and commended them for their bravery when they came under fire from the same person who had killed him. – SAnews.gov.za
