Four top trends to watch in the African energy sector in 2024

Location: Business
Starsight Energy

As we head into 2024, the renewable energy sector is set to see innovation that will transform the way energy is accessed, stored and deployed across Africa. Paul van Zijl, Group CEO at Starsight Energy (https://StarsightEnergy.com/), discusses 4 key trends that he thinks will profoundly shape the industry over the next year.

Batteries will provide benefits far beyond backup for behind-the-meter projects

One of the most significant shifts in solar technology revolves around the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) – especially for behind-the-meter solar (also known as onsite solar). Traditionally, batteries were seen primarily as backup storage when paired with a solar system, ensuring a steady power supply during cloudy days, nighttime or when the grid is unavailable. However, in 2024, the focus is vastly shifting towards load management, where batteries play a dynamic role in optimising energy consumption.

As the trend for the deployment of batteries across the continent grows, cutting-edge management systems will become a key part of solar installations with an integrated battery component. These systems use advanced algorithms to predict energy demand patterns. This allows for the strategic use of battery storage – discharging it during expensive peak times and charging it using solar energy or the grid during off-peak – to reduce the costly demand charges that come with variable tariff structures. Along with enhancing the efficiency of solar systems, integrated battery storage solutions can also contribute to grid stability by reducing strain during high-demand periods.

When it comes to front-of-the-meter (or offsite) storage, BESS is also set to play a bigger role in the deployment of utility-scale renewable energy technology like wheeling - where power is generated at an offsite location (like a solar or wind farm) and transported using the available power network to different off-takers.

In South Africa for example, the national energy provider Eskom announced the deployment of around 343 MW in BESS projects as part of an overall 500 MW BESS initiative aimed at addressing the country's long-running electricity crisis. The systems will be in remote areas (with limited access to Eskom's network) but still close to renewable energy plants built by independent power producers (IPPs).

This collaboration between the public and private sectors supports more widespread deployment of utility-scale power and the adoption of renewable energy projects. By adding battery storage components to the national grid, businesses and consumers can gain quicker access to reliable electricity while the power utility can address peak energy demands more easily. This also ensures that the increasing amount of power generated from utility-scale solar projects can be stored and consumed outside of daylight hours to avoid stranded grid capacity.

Data, banking and tourism: The rise of sustainable off-grid solar solutions

Off-grid renewable energy solutions, including stand-alone systems and mini-grids, offer a unique opportunity to expand modern energy access services. The distributed nature of these systems allows them to be tailored to local conditions, tap into available renewable resources, deliver diverse energy services, and utilise local capacity to ensure long-term sustainability.

We will see a rise in these solutions as more and more commercial and industrial businesses realise the value of effectively moving off-grid. This will be prevalent in three industries:

Data centres: Africa is a global hub for data centres. According to research from African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), there is around 250 MW of installed data centre capacity across Africa – with the demand for centres in Africa expected to exceed supply by 300% by 2030. These powerhouses of technology rely heavily on a steady and safe electricity supply. From operating to maintaining their vast cooling systems, large data centres simply can't afford the risk of a grid collapse or any possible power interruptions. Power autonomy is the name of the game here, making battery storage a necessity from the get-go.

Banking: While the prevalence of mobile financial services continues to soar on the continent, there is still a tangible need for brick-and-mortar banks and ATMs in countries where access to these services remains essential. These sites need to remain operational should there be any sort of grid collapse or catastrophic power failures - making an off-grid solution a non-negotiable component of the future of banking in Africa.

Tourism: With the rise of conscious consumerism and eco-tourism, sustainability is fast becoming the differentiating factor for discerning travellers choosing their next holiday destination. Luxury lodges in popular destinations in East and Southern Africa are fast moving towards fully off-grid solar battery operations to offer their guests uninterrupted access to power while boosting the lodge's green credentials in the process.

As more and more businesses become aware of the benefits of off-grid solar, it is likely that we will see an even greater adoption of this technology in the coming year.

Seamless access to renewables through a reimagined aggregation model

We will certainly see a shift towards aggregated solutions, wherein energy providers will consolidate diverse technologies and services into comprehensive packages in 2024. This trend is driven by the recognition that a holistic approach to energy solutions is not only more convenient for consumers but also more effective in optimising energy production and consumption.

This can be done in several ways. For example, trading of electricity in South Africa allows a service provider of solar energy to buy and sell, excess wind energy without having to invest substantial capital expenditure amounts. Similarly, instead of having gas-powered energy compete with renewable energy, the aggregation model will also allow providers of such services to aggregate their energy solutions and provide the client with a holistic offering. The goal is to provide consumers with a seamless and integrated final product that maximises the benefits of renewable energy across various aspects of their daily lives. The real value for customers lies in a collaboration of providers who can meet their specific needs and power the entire energy lifecycle.

Tackling complexities through an increasingly consolidated sector

As the solar industry matures, a trend towards consolidation will become increasingly evident in 2024. Larger energy companies will consider merging or acquiring smaller players, creating more robust and diversified entities. This consolidation is driven by the desire to achieve economies of scale, increase market share, and foster innovation by pooling resources and expertise.

Consolidation in the industry is not limited to manufacturers but extends to service providers, research and development firms, and energy management companies. By joining forces, these entities can tackle the complexities of the evolving energy landscape more effectively, driving down costs and accelerating the adoption of alternative energies across the continent.

This trend is fostering the emergence of holistic service providers capable of providing end-to-end solutions that address the diverse needs of businesses, consumers and communities. Our recent market-milestone merger between Starsight Energy (https://StarsightEnergy.com/) and SolarAfrica (https://SolarAfrica.com/) is a case in point. Customers in Eastern, Southern and Western Africa can access our comprehensive mix of cost-effective solutions that provide power security and carbon reduction. These include solar energy, battery storage, wheeling, and energy management, among others.

The future is bright. If 2023 was anything to go by in terms of transformation for the energy sector, 2024 will be marked by accelerated innovation and a collective commitment to harnessing the full potential of renewable energy that holds the promise of a more resilient, more sustainable, and more tightly connected energy future for Africa.

Structural reforms remain key for SA economy

Location: News

Structural reforms remain key for SA economy

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to engaging in structural reforms that will foster an environment fertile to economic growth and competitiveness.

The Minister was speaking during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting held in Davos, Switzerland.

Godongwana is leading the South African delegation to the critical meeting.

Structural reforms in South Africa are targeted at – among other things – electricity, infrastructure, water and logistics, and are driven by Operation Vulindlela.

Operation Vulindlela is a joint initiative of the Presidency and National Treasury to accelerate the implementation of structural reforms and support economic recovery. It aims to modernise and transform network industries, including electricity, water, transport and digital communications.

The objectives of the reforms are aimed at:

  • Stabilising the electricity supply.
  • Reducing the cost and increasing the quality of digital communications.
  • Providing sustainable water supply to meet demand.
  • Providing competitive and efficient freight transport.
  • Fostering a visa regime that attracts skills and grows tourism.

“There are a number of things we are doing to deal with structural reforms. One of the perennial problems we’ve had has been on the energy front. Massive structural reforms… are dealing with that question.

“A new challenge has been the logistics sector, where we are investing a lot in it. We have been trying to change the skills composition to the extent that we don’t have and we have provided an environment where we can import skills with ease.

“So there are lot of structural reforms that we have engaged in in order to make sure that we can grow the economy and be competitive,” Godongwana told the panel.

Historical commitment

During the pre-WEF media breakfast briefing held last week, Godongwana emphasised that structural reforms remain crucial.

“Structural reforms remain crucial to revive medium-term growth prospects amid a constrained policy space. We remain steadfast in carrying out structural reforms to support and accelerate economic recovery.

“As government, we remain resolved to deal with the energy and logistics challenges that are adversely impacting our economy,” he said.

In his Medium Term Budget Policy Statement delivered in November last year, Godongwana presented the reforms specifically targeted at Eskom and Transnet.

On Transnet, he said: “Rail underperformance is estimated to have cost up to 5% of GDP in 2022, with losses in the region of R50 billion in the minerals sector alone.

“Given the scale of the challenges, the National Logistics Crisis Committee was instituted to broaden reforms in the sector and prioritise reforms aimed at resolving the immediate crisis, while also addressing the structural aspects hampering the sector.”

On electricity, Godongwana said: “[We] recognise the potential loss of revenue due to private electricity generation, and the fact that traditional revenue models relied on by public entities like Eskom, face serious disruption.

“It is for these reasons that our electricity reforms are holistic, evidenced-based, and geared to find a balanced solution to our electricity supply challenges. They take into account not just a particular entity but the transformation of the sector as a whole.” – SAnews.gov.za

Shining the Spotlight on #BlackExcellence in Civic Engagement and Politics

Location: News
Energy Capital & Power

The influential history of Black individuals and organizations in civic engagement and political leadership throughout the world is incontrovertible and enduring. Strong leadership plays a crucial role in shaping the world and driving social progress, bringing innovation and opportunity to the realms of business, science, technology, sports, arts, and literature. As such, this year's Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS), taking place in Dubai on February 27, 2024, will honor the achievements and untapped potential of Black leaders in politics and civic engagement.

Concern for the welfare and civil rights of all people has been an outspoken theme in the policies of Black civic leaders for over a century. As an outspoken advocate for desegregation and unity in the United States (U.S.) during the mid-20th Century, French dancer, singer, actress, and activist, Josephine Baker became the first Black women inducted to the Panthéon in Paris, which came as a result of her contributions to French culture and the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S.

Moreover, as a long-time advocate for African American equality, Coretta Scott King was an author, activist, and civil rights leader whose prominent role during the U.S.'s Civil Rights Movement enthused Black participation in the U.S. political system, driving progress and spurring change in the country's political landscape. Furthermore, her long-standing opposition to Apartheid in South Africa in the 1980s prompted nationwide protests against the country's racial policies, contributing to the regime's dismantling.

Additionally, despite his relatively short career in government, former Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba's contributions to de-colonialism and African nationalist movements in the 20th century are defined by dignity, humanity, strength, and unity, and whose administration played a significant role in the transformation of the Republic of Congo from a colony into an independent republic.

Meanwhile, having jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for his efforts to end wartime sexual violence in Central Africa, Dr. Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist who serves in the Board Membership of numerous organizations and agencies that advocates healthcare and support for survivors of conflict. Dr. Mukwege's accomplishments in the fields of medicine and care in Africa has resulted in the growth of a culture of peace in the continent's Central region.

The accomplishments of these individuals and the many more in the global leadership and civic engagement space have laid the foundation for transformational change worldwide. As a platform for uniting the global Black community, GBIS will shine the spotlight on Black excellence, with achievement in civic engagement and politics celebrated. The conference, which serves to highlight the contributions, achievements, and influence of Black leaders from all over the world, takes place under the theme, Black Excellence: Unleashing the Unexplored Potential for Global Unity. The summit encapsulates the profound impact of Black individuals on the global stage while serving as a platform for networking, celebration, and the realization of the true potential of a united global community.

SA remains committed to creating a conducive environment for business

South Africa remains open for business and dedicated to creating a conducive environment for it to strive, says Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.

The Minister made the remarks on Thursday during an engagement with members of the media ahead of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

“We remain steadfast in carrying out structural reforms to support and accelerate economic recovery. As government, we remain resolved to deal with the energy and logistics challenges that are adversely impacting our economy,” he told the media.

This year’s meeting, which will take place from 15 to 19 January 2024, will focus on rebuilding trust.

“It is quite apt, considering the complexity associated with the domestic and transnational headwinds we are facing.”

He explained that the theme will link four interconnected thematic priorities.

These include achieving security and cooperation in a fractured world; creating growth and jobs for a new era; artificial intelligence; and a long-term strategy for climate, nature and energy.

According to Godongwana, South Africa remains the gateway to Africa and has called on international investors to invest in Africa and South Africa.

Meanwhile, he is of the view that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) provides further opportunities for South African businesses to expand and grow their business and for international businesses to partner with local companies to increase their presence in Africa.

“Many of you have been attending the annual meeting for many years now, and I’m sure you will agree with me that these issues are ones that current and potential investors in our country and continent are interested in.”

The Minister also took the opportunity to thank the private sector for being a willing partner of government, in addressing the challenges the country faces towards unlocking economic growth.

In addition, he said marketing the country during WEF Davos is another great opportunity for collaboration.

Structural reforms

Meanwhile, Godongwana said fiscal consolidation is needed to tackle soaring debt levels, while monetary policy should stay the course to bring inflation to target.

“Structural reforms remain crucial to revive medium-term growth prospects amid constrained policy space. The green transition, increasing resilience to climate shocks, and improving food security for millions of people require strengthened multilateral frameworks and adherence to rules-based platforms for international cooperation.”

He is also of the view that access to competitive international development finance, for developing countries, is imperative to ensure a successful green transition.

In addition, he said government will also be tabling matching competitive financing for green transitions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in international financial institutions and key global economic platforms such as the Group of 20 (G20).

“Today provides a platform for a frank discussion to enable government and business to align their message for Davos.

“As government, we value this engagement. This is a testament to the presence of my colleagues. We are encouraged that business holds the same view given the level of representation. We might not agree on all the policy issues. However, it is important that we find common ground and that we speak as one voice in Davos.”

He told the media that Treasury, various government departments and Brand SA, have prepared key messages that the State and business can use as a guide for the country's engagement at WEF.

“I would just like to highlight the following. The common message we are taking to the annual meeting is that South Africa remains open for business and is committed to creating a conducive environment.” – SAnews.gov.za

SA can still expect loadshedding

Location: News

SA can still expect loadshedding

Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has reiterated that while Eskom is working hard on improving its generation system, citizens can still expect load shedding.

Providing an outlook on Eskom’s generation capabilities during a media briefing on Tuesday in Pretoria, the Minister explained that the majority of units remain unreliable and this is being addressed through the planned maintenance that Eskom is conducting routinely.

Due to legacy issues including under investment at Eskom and the entity not having sufficiently planned for maintenance, South Africa’s grid is unreliable.

“We will have periods of days of no load shedding and there will be days of load shedding. Eskom has announced its summer outlook and it makes the point that we should not be at more than Stage 4 level of load shedding.

“While demand was low during the week 22- 29 December 2023, Eskom was working to address issues of its fleet and used the opportunity to carry out planned maintenance.

“We have been working during the festive season to ensure that we address issues of the fleet to continue to perform but also readying the fleet to ensure that once there is a ramp up of demand, the units are able to return back to service and remain in service while delivering efficient megawatts (MW),” Ramokgopa said.

The Minister pointed out that Eskom is beginning to decrease its planned maintenance, as they are expecting demand to increase.

While in December 2022 South Africa experienced load shedding, Eskom had three units back last December at Kusile, which ensured that there were periods of no load shedding.

“If you had to look at the work that has been done at Eskom, they have reduced repeat failures. We have additional buffer for instances of a cluster of units failing where you do not have to initiate load shedding or if you do, it is not at intense levels.

“Unit 1 at Kusile experienced significant delays in relation to the timeline to return to service, which was set for June last year but it returned five months later due to outage slips. We are confident that the work that has been done by the generation team has ensured that we will not have a repeat when we want to return unit 2, which is currently out,” he said.

The Minister reminded citizens that Koeberg unit 1 and 2 were extending the license of the only nuclear power station in the country.

“We had to do a significant amount of work to meet the regulatory requirements and compliance so we can get the license extensions… so these units were out. As part of this robust exercise, unit 1 in Koeberg is now on full load. It has passed the full load tests. There is a plethora of tests that need to be run and the test was passed on 30 December.

“Now unit 1 in Koeberg is unleashing the MWs that are required and we hope it will continue to do that for the next 20 years. Another development is the synchronisation of Kusile Power Station’s unit 5.

“That power is intermittent. It is doing a number of tests, and it will go into full commercial operation for an average period of six months so they continue to do the tests but as they continue to do the tests, it does give us MWs,” Ramokgopa said.

“Unit 5 is running at 60% and there are a lot of things that need to be done such as balancing and optimisation tests so that we are sure when the unit is in commercial operation so essentially giving us MWs uninterrupted.”

Integrated Resource Plan

The Minister called on the public to make submissions on the draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2023 that was issued by Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, for public comment in Government Gazette no 49974 of 04 January 2024.

“I want to urge that your comments are not restricted to public commentary, engagements and with the media. That does not amount to a submission. A submission means you make a written response of ideas of what you think of the IRP and submit it as required.

“As it stands, the IRP represents the views of Cabinet and we want to know what the public thinks. I want to encourage you to make submissions and as and when the DMRE offers an opportunity to make oral representation, I encourage you to do that as well,” Ramokgopa said.

The IRP is an electricity generation plan that seeks to ensure security of electricity supply by balancing supply with demand, while taking into account the environment and total cost of supply.

The purpose of this publication is to solicit public comments on the assumptions, input parameters, scenarios, and observations made. Comments submitted will be considered when drafting the final policy adjusted plan, which will map out the future energy mix for the country. – SAnews.gov.za

Tourism department thanks local travellers

The Department of Tourism has thanked South Africans who have supported local establishments and boosted the tourism sector during the recent holiday period.

With the decrease in the fuel price that came into effect on 3 January 2024, the department has encouraged citizens to take a last-minute January break to mentally prepare for the year, while reducing stress and supporting physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

“Our country has a wealth of diverse tourism and cultural offerings nestled in our small dorpies, townships and villages. This part of the domestic market is the backbone of the tourism sector, playing a crucial role in addressing the holiday and leisure needs of our visitors, while creating much needed employment for our citizenry,” department spokesperson Tasneem Carrim said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, motorists welcomed a decrease in the price of petrol, with 93 (ULP & LRP) decreasing by 62 cents a litre, while the price of 95 (ULP & LRP) decreased by 76 cents a litre. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy attributed the adjustment of fuel prices to current local and international factors.

The price of diesel (0.005% sulphur) came down by 126.32 cents a litre and the price of illuminating paraffin (wholesale) decreased by 93 cents per litre, and the Single Maximum National Retail Price (SMNRP) for illuminating paraffin came down by R1.24 per litre.

“We encourage everyone to take some time now to explore the fun and diverse tourism offerings across the country. Whether it is a Sho’t Left to a quaint picnic park, nature reserve or heritage attraction, the decrease in the fuel price will facilitate ease of access to our attractions and contribute to growing tourism communities,” Carrim said. – SAnews.gov.za

President approves MoU to strengthen action against load shedding

President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entered into by Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan and Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to better clarify their respective responsibilities with respect to Eskom and the resolution of the electricity crisis.

The MoU establishes a firm basis for a collaborative approach between the Ministers in exercising their assigned powers and functions.

“While significant progress has been made in reducing the severity of load shedding, much work still needs to be done to guarantee a secure supply of electricity. The collaborative approach outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding will further strengthen Eskom’s efforts to resolve the electricity crisis,” President Ramaphosa said in a statement on Friday.

The MoU outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Minister of Electricity as follows:

  • Focus full time on all aspects of the electricity crisis and the work of the National Energy Crisis Committee.
  • Exercise authority over the Eskom Board and management on ending load shedding and ensure that the Energy Action Plan is implemented without delay.
  • Improve generation capacity and the purchase of additional capacity.

  • Ensure that matters dealing with transmission are dealt with, including the issuing of the Requests for Proposals and/or Requests for Information for financing of new transmission lines.
  • Developing and agreeing on financing models and options for transmission together with National Treasury and the Presidency.

The Presidency said the MoU takes into account the Eskom Memorandum of Incorporation, which makes it obligatory to inform the Minister of Public Enterprises of critical decisions in this respect.

The MoU stipulates that the Minister of Public Enterprises will:

  • Remain the shareholder representative of Eskom.
  • Support and assist the Minister of Electricity in his interactions with the Board by incorporating the responsibilities of the Minister of Electricity listed in the MoU in the execution of his role as shareholder, in line with the Eskom Shareholder Compact, and inserting the obligations of the Board in this regard into the Board Performance Evaluation Framework.
  • Steer the restructuring of Eskom in line with the Eskom Roadmap.
  • Ensure the establishment and operationalisation of the transmission company.
  • Lay the basis for the restructuring of Eskom arising from the Electricity Regulation Act Amendment Bill.
  • Oversee the implementation of the Just Energy Transition strategy as provided for in the Shareholder Compact.

The MoU makes provision for regular review meetings between the Ministers to address any impediments to its implementation. The Ministers will also have regular review meetings with the President.

“The Ministers will work together more closely and with their respective responsibilities clearly outlined to ensure the effective implementation of the Energy Action Plan,” the President said.

The President announced the Energy Action Plan in July 2022 as South Africa’s plan to end load shedding and achieve energy security. It outlines a bold set of actions aimed at fixing Eskom and adding as much new generation capacity as possible, as quickly as possible, to close the gap in electricity supply.

African Energy Chamber Lights Up Willow Crescent Secondary School, Empowering Students with Sustainable Energy

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

In a move to address challenges faced by African children and their schools posed by power outages and no access to power, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) (http://www.EnergyChamber.org) has embarked on a transformative initiative that will see it provide, together with partners, off-grid solutions to thousands of schools across Africa. The program's pilot phase kicked off with the provision of a solar power system to Willow Crescent Secondary School in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg. Qualifying schools and projects must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to sustainable energy solutions and community empowerment.

The African Energy Chamber is a leading energy advocacy group dedicated to addressing energy poverty in Africa by 2030 by encouraging investments in the entire African energy value chain.

The AEC's donation of solar panels stands as a beacon of hope, ensuring a consistent and reliable power supply for the 1700 students, school, and staff of Willow Crescent Secondary School. This initiative directly addresses the critical need for uninterrupted electricity access during outages, guaranteeing an uninterrupted learning environment for young South African boys and girls.

"We express our deepest gratitude for the invaluable donation of solar panels, as during stage four of load shedding, our school heavily relied on a small generator, costing us between 1000 and 2000 rands in petrol just to power our admin block—an expense the school could not bear," said Olivia Hill, principal of Willow Crescent Secondary School.

Load shedding has become a major issue in South Africa, causing power outages for hours at a time.

Beyond the confines of the school grounds, this project will significantly impact the Eldorado Park community. By providing a dependable power source to a local educational institution, which is at the center of the entire community's wellbeing. This project not only provides a reliable power source for educational activities but also marks a step towards a more resilient and empowered community. The consistent electricity supply will markedly enhance the student's educational experience, creating boundless opportunities for growth, innovation, and a brighter future for the students and the community at large.

"As the African Energy Chamber, we are committed to fostering innovation and sustainable solutions. It is our goal to actively contribute to the development of communities through impactful initiatives. We are particularly committed to promoting sustainable access to power for young boys and girls in education." said Ms. Oneyka Cindy Ojogbo, a board member at the African Energy Chamber.

Minister Gwede Mantashe announces adjustment of fuel prices effective from 3 January 2024

Location: News

Department of Mineral Resources and Energy: Republic of South Africa
Download logo

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Gwede Mantashe, announces the adjustment of fuel prices based on current local and international factors with effect from the 3rd of January 2024.

South Africa's fuel prices are adjusted monthly, informed by international and local factors. International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including importation costs, e.g., shipping costs.

The main reasons for the fuel price adjustments are due to:

1. Crude oil prices

The average Brent Crude oil price decreased from 82.62 US Dollars (USD) to 77.35 USD during the period under review, mainly due to, increased production by the United States of America, Venezuela, Guyana, and other non-OPEC countries despite the announcement by OPEC to cut production.

2. International petroleum product prices

The average international product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin decreased in line with the lower crude oil prices. LPG prices increased due to higher freight cost. These factors led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 50.83 c/l, 105.81 c/l and 99.00 c/l, respectively.

3. Rand/US Dollar exchange rate

The Rand depreciated slightly on average, against the US Dollar (from 18.57 to 18.66 Rand per USD) during the period under review when compared to the previous one. This led to higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 5.30 c/l, 5.83 c/l and 6.00 c/l, respectively.

4. Implementation of the Slate Levy

The cumulative slate balance on petrol and Diesel at the end of November 2023 had a positive balance of R1.8 billion. Therefore, a slate levy of zero c/l will be implemented in the price structure of petrol and diesel with effect from the 3rd of January 2024. This means that the motorists will benefit by 26.32 cents per litre since the slate levy will decrease from 26.32 to zero cents per litre.

5. Octane differential between 95 and 93 petrol grades

In line with the Working Rules to determine the Basic Fuels Prices (BFP), the 95 octane (unleaded) grade is the price-marker grade and the BFP-differential between 95 and 93 octanes is adjusted on the first Wednesday of each quarter. The BFP Octane differential has changed during the previous quarter and therefore the retail prices of 95 and 93 petrol octanes will be different in each fuel- pricing zone with effect from the 3rd of January 2024.

Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for January 2024 will be adjusted as follows:

  • Petrol (93 ULP & LRP): Sixty-two cents per litre (62.00 c/l) decrease.
  • Petrol (95 ULP & LRP): Seventy-six cents per litre (76.00 c/l) decrease.
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): One hundred and eighteen pont three two cents per litre (118.32 c/l) decrease.
  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): One hundred and twenty-six point three two cents per litre (126.32 c/l) decrease.
  • Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): Ninety-three cents per litre (93.00 c/l) decrease.
  • SMNRP for IP: One hundred and twenty-four cents per litre (124.00 c/l) decrease.
  • Maximum LPGas Retail Price: Eleven cents per kilogram (11.00 c/kg) increase.

The fuel prices schedule for the different zones will be published on Tuesday, the 2nd of January 2024.

Kusile Unit 5 synchronised to the grid

Location: News

Kusile Unit 5 synchronised to the grid

Eskom has synchronised Unit 5 of the Kusile Power Station project to the national grid.

“Eskom is delighted to announce that Unit 5 of the Kusile Power Station project was synchronised to the national grid for the first time on 31 December 2023 at 17h22. The unit will contribute an additional 800MW to the country’s power system, which was never part of the Eskom grid capacity,” said the power utility.

The unit will supply electricity intermittently during the testing and optimisation phase over the next six months before being transferred into commercial operation and the capacity officially added to the current Eskom fleet.

“As part of the Generation Recovery Plan, the synchronisation of Kusile Unit 5 marks another significant milestone of sustainably improving our generation performance. This will contribute the much-needed power to the grid,” said Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation.

“We are encouraged that this achievement of our recovery plan immediately follows the return of the three units that were brought online from end September 2023, bringing a total of 3 200MW onto the grid, which will further improve the energy availability factor (EAF) and help strengthen South Africa’s electricity capacity.

“I am grateful for the commitment displayed by the Kusile project team. Their relentless efforts in ensuring that the project is completed is highly commendable. I have confidence that they will continue to work with determination to successfully deliver Unit 5 to commercial operation,” explained Nxumalo.

Eskom’s Acting Group Chief Executive, Calib Cassim, said Unit 5 brings hope to the people of South Africa as it helps power the nation and its economy.

“There is enormous effort made to continue the remarkable progress on the new build programme and the Generation Recovery Plan.

“We remain focused on improving the performance of the generation fleet to reduce the impact of load shedding felt countrywide, and to lessen the costs on supplementing capacity using the diesel-powered plant,” said Cassim.

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has welcomed the developments at Kusile.

The Minister has emphasised that “more work and efforts will continue towards adding more generation capacity to the grid to reduce and ultimately end load shedding”.

The Minister congratulated Eskom’s generation team for the continued work towards stabilising the country’s generation capacity.

Progress made in construction

Progress is being made on the remaining construction and commissioning activities at Unit 6 and at completion, the station will consist of six units, which will produce a maximum 4 800MW.

This will make Kusile South Africa’s largest construction project and will be the world’s fourth largest coal plant.

“In addition, the power station is fitted with wet flue gas desulphurisation (WFGD) emissions abatement technology, in line with current international practice to ensure compliance with air quality standards. This makes Kusile the first power station in South Africa and Africa to use WFGD technology, which is used to remove sulphur dioxide from the flue gas prior discharge to the atmosphere,” Eskom said.

Also on a positive note, repair works to the permanent stack for units 1, 2 and 3 are progressing well.

Intensified efforts are also being made to return Medupi Unit 4 to service by end July 2024.

This, together with the successful completion of Kusile Unit 5 and the return of the three Kusile units will further improve the energy availability and give impetus to Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan. - SAnews.gov.za

Relief at the pumps

Relief at the pumps

With just two days into the new year, motorists will breathe a sigh of relief at the pumps on Wednesday as the price of petrol is set to come down by between 62 and 76 cents a litre.

According to the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe, 93 (ULP & LRP) will decrease by 62 cents a litre, while the price of 95 (ULP & LRP) will decrease by 76 cents a litre.

This means that a litre of 95, which currently costs R23.25 in Gauteng, will come down to R22.49.

The price of Diesel (0.05% sulphur) will come down by 118.32 cents a litre.

The price of Diesel (0.005% sulphur) will come down by 126.32 cents a litre and the price of Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale) will decrease by 93 cents per litre and the Single Maximum National Retail Price (SMNRP) for illuminating paraffin will come down by R1.24 per litre.

The fuel price adjustments were due to crude oil prices, international petroleum product prices; the Rand/US Dollar exchange rate; the implementation of the Slate Levy, and the octane differential between 95 and 93 petrol grades.
