Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, the CEO of Merck Foundation, highlighted, “At Merck Foundation, we mark World Cancer Day not just as a single day, but as our continued commitment to transform and advance cancer care in Africa.

Together with my dear sisters, the Africa's First Ladies, we are have enhanced the cancer care capacity in the continent by providing 194 scholarships to young African doctors from 32 countries, significantly increasing the number of oncologists in Africa. We are making history together by providing these important scholarships for the first oncologists and /or the first cancer care teams in many countries across Africa.”  

Merck Foundation in total provided more than 2100 scholarships to doctors from over 52 countries in 44 critical and underserved medical specialties.

The Merck Foundation Cancer Access Program provides One, two- and three-years fellowship, Post Graduate Diploma and Master Degree of oncology for doctors from Africa. The clinical training has been conducted in India, Egypt and Kenya. Additionaly, Merck Foundation also provides scholarships for 2 years online PG Diploma in Cancer and Clinical Oncology, 01 year online PG Diploma in Medical Oncology and 1 year online PG Diploma in Pain Management from reputed Universities in UK like University of South Wales, University of Buckingham, Queen Mary University of London, and Cardiff University.

Merck Foundation is establishing Multidisciplinary Oncology Care teams in many African countries by providing scholarships of clinical training in Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Pediatrics Oncology, Gynecology Oncology, Breast Oncology, Haemato-Oncology, Orthopaedic Oncology, Palliative Care, Pathology Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Research in Oncology, Surgical Oncology - Genital Urinary System, Advanced Cytopathology Training, Interventional Radiology, Radiation Technician, Laboratory Technician, Oncology Nursing.

Merck Foundation through its Merck Foundation Cancer Access Program has provided 194 scholarships of Oncology to doctors from 32 countries including Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Africa records around 1.1 million new cases of cancer, resulting in up to 700,000 deaths, every year, as per WHO data. The mortality rate of cancer patients is very high in Africa, as compared to the rest of the world.

“One of the key reasons is also the late diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, these scholarships are very important” added Senator Kelej.

Merck Foundation has also created awareness materials including awareness leaflets and videos on Cancer Prevention and Early Detection.

Dr. Chifundo Kajombo, Merck Foundation Alumni from Malawi shares, “I am privileged to be awarded a scholarship by Merck Foundation to pursue the Surgical Oncology fellowship training program at Tata Memorial Hospital, India. I managed to advance from basic surgical oncology principles to the advanced level. This has helped me improve my understanding of cancer and operative principles. Since returning back home, I have managed to change the structure of how our breast clinic runs and modified it to incorporate a number of new things that we probably could not have possibly included. I am so proud to share that I have just been awarded the Best Surgeon for 2023 in Malawi. I would not have achieved this feat without Merck Foundation's scholarship. I am very thankful.”

Eskom implements Stage 3 load shedding from today

Eskom will implement Stage 3 load shedding from 5pm today, which will continue throughout the weekend.

The power utility had managed to stave off the implementation of load shedding for the past 10 months, in accordance with the Generation Recovery Plan and the Energy Action Plan.

During a media briefing at Megawatt Park on Friday, Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa explained that several factors led to a “perfect storm” – triggering the necessity of initiating load shedding.

“We got hit by a perfect storm. We had the units out for planned maintenance… We have been doing [that] consistently to allow us a significant amount of headspace for... [maintenance]. 

“[However] we had a situation where at two of our best performing power stations, Matimba and Lethabo, we had a number of units failing at the beginning of the week... and... there were other units that delayed in coming back [online],” he said.

As a result, the power utility was forced to rely on the open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) – Eskom’s diesel burning reserves – which are now depleted.

“We are at a point where for the purposes of protecting the grid and the integrity of the system, we need to maintain the reserve margins. 

“We have taken a conscious decision that we are not following records (sic). Ideally, we would want to say: a year without load shedding. But no, that can’t be at the expense of the system. [We are] informed by prudent and judicious engineering consideration and the expectations of the system operator, so we will initiate load shedding.

“It gets to be initiated because we are pulling back and replenishing all the reserves,” Ramokgopa said.

Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, said teams at Matimba and Lethabo power stations are already working to bring units back online.

“We are well progressed in terms of getting these units back on track… [and] into operation. They’ll be coming through over the weekend and early in the new week.

“However, what we saw… is the fact that come next week, as the demand picks up, we’ll not have any reserves if we do not create some [head room] for ourselves over this weekend,” Marokane said.

He assured that Eskom remains committed to addressing unit unreliability.

“Overall availability is still high but we need to create this space for unexpected breakdowns, as they do happen. This is well within the forecast that we shared for the summer plan. 

“Our teams’ [focus]… is to return these units back into operation and get back to the new normal of no load shedding,” Marokane said. – SAnews.gov.za

Winde hands over George building collapse report to the police

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has officially handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) a report detailing the structural engineering findings of the George building collapse.

Winde handed over the report on Thursday to the province’s Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, and the lead investigator from SAPS, Captain Johan de Lange.

The Western Cape Government (WCG) commissioned an independent investigation into the building collapse in George on 6 May 2024. 

The incident, which occurred while the building was still under construction, resulted in the deaths of 34 people and serious injuries to many others. 

Twenty-eight people were rescued alive in a multi-stakeholder disaster operation.

“At the time, the Western Cape Government understood that the event would have repercussions for human lives and livelihoods, and that an investigation into its cause would be essential. 

“And so, while the multi-stakeholder operation was underway, the WCG secured the services of an independent structural engineering firm to conduct an investigation of the collapse site, simultaneous with the rescue operation,” the statement read. 

The WCG stated that the peer-reviewed final report of this firm was to ensure its integrity.

“This probe is one of several that were launched, with the SAPS being the lead body responsible for investigating an incident of this nature,” Winde said.

This means the report is now under the jurisdiction of the SAPS, which must take into account both the findings of this independent report and all other evidence available during the overall criminal investigation. 

The WCG believes the report’s technical findings will greatly aid the SAPS investigation in determining whether charges should be filed.

“Given the nature of the incident and the fact that 34 people tragically lost their lives, it is entirely possible that criminal proceedings may ensue.

“It is for this reason that the findings of the independent probe cannot be made public so that we do not in any way compromise the SAPS investigation and further possible proceedings,” the Premier explained.

The provincial government said the findings of the various agencies’ investigations must be consolidated to ensure an overall understanding of what transpired and to hold those responsible accountable. 

Winde has acknowledged the hard work of government staff, who, along with many other partners, worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped on the site. 

He thanked the independent team that came on board and concluded the investigation carefully and speedily. 

“There must be consequences for those responsible for this horrific tragedy. We have now handed over the report to the SAPS, who we have been assured are working tirelessly on this case, and we will continue to monitor this matter very closely.

“I will never forget being there when our teams recovered Gabriel Guambe alive from the site over 100 hours after its collapse. It is for him, for Delvin Safers, for their peers and friends who made it out alive, and for those who succumbed, and the families of the victims, that justice must be delivered,” Winde said. 

The provincial government said the Western Cape Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety Court Watching Brief Unit will closely monitor its progress. – SAnews.gov.za

Nelson Mandela Bay kicks off service delivery campaign

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, has kicked off a service delivery resuscitation campaign, which aims to ensure all metro communities receive the services they need.

Aligned with the municipality’s 100-day priorities, the campaign named “Siyasebenza Campaign: A Metro at Work”, focuses on accelerating service delivery and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Through the Siyasebenza Campaign, Lobishe is calling on local communities, businesses, and non-governmental organisations to collaborate with the municipality to improve service delivery across the metro.

The inclusive campaign, which was rolled out in Kariega this week, will address immediate concerns, including illegal dumping, street cleaning, grass cutting, pothole repairs, fixing streetlights, and upgrading public spaces.

The campaign aims to deliver visible results, while also committing to long-term interventions to ensure sustainable service delivery improvements.

During the launch of the campaign, teams including Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs), and senior officials, were deployed in various groups to cover areas across Kariega and Dispatch.

The teams attended to different service delivery challenges, including blocked sanitation infrastructure, water leaks, flooding, electricity cable theft, and general vandalism.

Speaking to residents in the affected areas that were identified by ward councillors, Lobishe said the municipality was closely monitoring the service delivery challenges faced by the communities and was working to address them.

For longer-term challenges, she said the municipality was developing sustainable solutions.

The Mayor said they were targeting wards in Kariega that were predominantly affected by the floods last year.

“We must, however, express our extreme concern and disappointment at the high levels of vandalism, currently being experienced in Kariega. We call on our people, and law enforcement to work together with us in apprehending these destructive culprits.

“Vandalism of infrastructure slows down service delivery as money meant for other community needs may be redirected to fix infrastructure that has been intentionally damaged by criminals. This does not only negatively affect our financially constrained municipality but prevents the community from enjoying services they so desperately need,” Lobishe said.

Infrastructure and Engineering Acting Executive Director, Joseph Tsatsire, affirmed the municipality’s commitment to accelerating service delivery.

"We shall be mobilising resources to accelerate the pace of service delivery, more especially in the areas identified under this campaign. Our teams are already at work, dealing with issues ranging from sanitation, water leaks and replacing vandalised infrastructure,” Tsatsire said. – SAnews.gov.za

Operations at Groblers Bridge temporarily suspended

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, on Wednesday said operations at the Groblers Bridge port of entry into Botswana are still temporarily suspended due to heavy rainfall, which caused significant flooding at the various operational areas. 

“We are pleased to announce that the floodwaters have now subsided, allowing for an assessment of the port infrastructure,” Masiapato said. 

Masiapato said a thorough inspection was conducted by experts from various engineering disciplines to determine the extent of the damage caused by the flooding. 

According to Masiapato, following the assessment conducted at the port of entry, a comprehensive project plan has been developed to address the necessary repairs and ensure the port’s readiness for operational resumption. 

The key activities in the project plan include the repairing of identified damages to the port infrastructure. Water quality tests will also need to be conducted to ensure the environment is safe for operations. 

Masiapato said water underground will need to be allowed to be completely dry in order to carry the weight of the cargo trucks that pass through the port. 

“It is anticipated that the repair and restoration process will take approximately six days to complete. 

“Upon completion of these activities, the Groblers Bridge port of entry will be fully operational, resuming its critical role in facilitating cross-border movement and trade between South Africa and Botswana,” Masiapato said.

The BMA remains committed to ensuring the safety and functionality of all ports of entry, recognising their importance in enabling economic activity and connectivity. 

Masiapato said the BMA is in continuous engagement with its counterparts in Botswana at all times on these matters and further updates will be provided as progress is made. – SAnews.gov.za

Road crashes and fatalities increase during festive season

While law enforcement maintained a constant presence throughout the festive season, conducting operations around the clock - the preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season Statistics reveal a concerning increase in crashes and fatalities, primarily attributed to human behavior. 

“Tragically, South Africa witnessed 1,502 deaths resulting from 1,234 fatal crashes during the 2024/25 festive season. The number of fatalities represents a year-on-year increase of 5.3% (70) compared to the 2023/24 festive season, with a 4.2% (50) increase in the number of crashes,” Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said during a media briefing, held in Pretoria, on Monday.

The preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season Statistics indicate that 87% of crashes happened because of human behaviour, including hit-and-runs, jay-walking (pedestrians crossing or walking in the street or road unlawfully), fatigue, loss of control over vehicles, speed, drunken driving, and reckless overtaking.

“The number of people who died on our roads this festive season has increased because people continued to behave badly. In spite of our pleas and warnings, and notwithstanding our efforts to clamp down on irresponsible and reckless behaviour, it is clear that many road users – both drivers and pedestrians – continue to act without regard for the lives of others.

“Six provinces recorded increases in the number of fatalities in the 2024/25 festive season compared to 2023/24, namely KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Northern Cape and North West,” the Minister said.

The Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State recorded increases of 70, 54 and 21 fatalities as compared to 2023/24, while Gauteng, Western Cape and Mpumalanga recorded decreases of 76, 23 and 15 fatalities, respectively.

Concern over pedestrian fatalities

Creecy said pedestrian fatalities remain a huge concern, with 41% of all road fatalities being pedestrians. 

The highest percentage of pedestrian fatalities were recorded in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, which are the most populous provinces in the country in terms of vehicles and people.

Gauteng had the highest pedestrian fatalities at 63.84% followed by Western Cape with 53.9% and KwaZulu-Natal with 44.33%.

During this period, law enforcement conducted joint operations in line with the focus areas, including vehicle road worthiness, public passenger transport, drunken driving, execution of warrants of arrest, and speed law enforcement.

Law enforcement officers issued 711,184 fines for various traffic offences across the country. 

“Some 23,607 fines were issued to drivers who failed to wear seatbelts, while another 16,925 motorists were fined for using cell phones while driving. Then, 16,527 vehicles were found to be unroadworthy and issued with traffic fines, as well as their motor vehicle licence discs removed, particularly in areas where vehicles could not be impounded due to lack of impoundment facilities,” the Minister said.

In total, 8,917 motor vehicles were impounded in areas where facilities were available.

“To clamp down on drunken driving, speeding and other moving violations, our officers arrested more than 9,550 motorists, with 3,840 individuals arrested for drunken driving.

“A total of 414 drivers were arrested for driving at high speed and five amongst them were driving at excessive speeds of between 200km/h to well above 240km/h,” Creecy said.

The highest speedster was arrested in Gauteng, driving at 245km/h (kilometre per hour) in a BMW Sedan on N1 near Honeydew, on 18 December 2024.

“We, South Africans, must change our behaviour on the roads. As we said at the beginning of the festive season, government and our law enforcement agencies cannot do it on our own.

“The statistics clearly send all of us, as South Africans, one message: Drivers and pedestrians must change their behaviour. We must obey the law, we must obey the basic rules of the road,” Creecy said.

Interventions 

The Minister has asked the provinces to conduct a detailed analysis of their respective statistics, and come up with a clear plan for the way forward, by the end of January. 

This will include a look at severe consequences for those who continue to show a disregard for road safety.

“We will continue to direct our efforts at changing the behaviour of road users, invest in designing and engineering safer roads, enforcing safe speeds in high congestion areas, and enhancing emergency response systems and access to quality trauma care, which is essential to saving lives.

“By reducing response times and improving the availability of critical care, we can increase survival rates and reduce the long-term impacts of road traffic injuries. This initiative will require collaboration with the Department of Health, and other industry role-players,” she said.

Creecy said indications are that the implementation of 24/7 traffic policing shifts is more critical than ever. 

“During the festive season, we agreed to release National Traffic Police resources to provinces, to intensify road safety communication and education campaigns and strengthen monitoring of our law enforcement operations especially at night.

"This approach will serve as a blueprint for our road safety activities but will only succeed if it is consistent all year round, especially on weekends and in every province across the country,” the Minister said. -SAnews.gov.za

Matrics who didn’t do well urged to pursue post-school training

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), Professor Blade Nzimande, has encouraged learners who did not perform well to remain hopeful and explore other options, including various post-school training opportunities, or to consider taking advantage of a second chance to improve their results.

Nzimande made the call as he joined the nation in celebrating the hard work and achievements of the Grade 12 Class of 2024. 

“As Minister responsible for the development and promotion of science, technology, and innovation in South Africa, I fully share the concerns of the Minister of Basic Education that our learners in Grades 5 to 9 significantly underperform in relation to their global counterparts in mathematics and science,” the Minister said in a statement.

Nzimande noted a decline in enrolments in critical subjects, such as physical sciences, mathematics, accounting, and economics, according to data. 

These subjects are essential for a nation’s progress in science, innovation, and economic development.

In the next five years, Nzimande said the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation will actively support government efforts to enhance the performance of the schooling system in science and mathematics subjects.

The Minister believes that the nation requires massive and sustained growth in the production of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduates, if South Africa is to forge a technology-led future.

“It is for this reason that we, as the DSTI have adopted the mantra, which says: Placing science, technology, and innovation at the centre of government, education, industry and society," Nzimande said.

As part of the department’s contribution to addressing the maths and science-related challenges in the basic education sector, Nzimande said the department will seek to strengthen its existing cooperation with the Department of Basic Education, which is supported by cooperation agreements with the nine provincial departments of education. 

In addition, the department has vowed to also strengthen existing cooperation with the Department of Higher Education, which is the main department in respect of higher education skills development, which includes science skills development. 

“We are currently implementing several extra-curricular and non-formal activities in the basic education sector, whose main objective is to excite learners about maths and science and contribute towards improved learner performance in maths and science. 

"These activities include the flagship science engagement program known as National Science Week (NSW), career guidance, and the distribution of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) career materials at various events, communities, and schools," Nzimande said.

He added that the department believes that the Mathematics Olympiads are extremely important, as they help develop the problem-solving skills of learners. 

In 2023, more than 77 000 learners participated in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO), a science engagement activity that focuses on high school learners. 

In 2024, more than 84 000 primary school learners participated in the South African Mathematics Challenge. 

“We believe that all our science awareness and engagement interventions are not just critical for enhancing learner performance in maths and science, but also to enable our strategic goal of placing science, technology, and innovation at the centre of government, education, industry, and society.”

KZN on track towards its 90% target, Premier

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has joined in the jubilation as the province proudly secured second position in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

KwaZulu-Natal achieved an impressive 89.5% pass rate, representing a 3.1% improvement from the previous year, and positions the province as the second-best performing in South Africa, following the Free State.

Ntuli officially announced the 2024 matric results during a prestigious ceremony at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban on Tuesday.

“This is proof that the essential foundation of basic education in KwaZulu-Natal is being laid brick by brick, district by district, school by school, and learner by learner,” Ntuli said.

Ntuli said the provincial government was firmly on track towards its 90% target, and he had “no doubt this performance will be surpassed in 2025”.

Of 161 962 learners who sat for the National Senior Certificate exams in the province, 144 990 learners passed, with 84 000 Bachelor passes, which is the highest in the country, marking a significant improvement from 45.7% in 2023 to 52.2% in 2024.

The province also saw an increase in schools achieving a 100% pass rate, from 246 in 2023 to 321 in 2024.

The district performances also showed an impressive growth, with Umkhanyakude leading nationally at 92.8%, followed by Ugu (91.7%) and Umlazi (89.8%).

Ntuli commended the provincial Education Department and MEC Sipho Hlomuka for their unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

The Premier acknowledged the invaluable contributions of educators, including school governing bodies and organised labour.

Special recognition was given to top achievers and schools, including special and correctional services centres, which achieved a 100% pass rate.

He encouraged the learners who did not pass to enrol for the Second Chance Matric Programme, to improve their results.

“Success is not measured by how many times you fall, but by how many times you rise. Never give up,” the Premier said.

Ntuli further encouraged learners to embrace the evolving job market and equip themselves with skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, to remain competitive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

“You are our future in the making. Grab every opportunity with both hands. KwaZulu-Natal is counting on you to make our province a better place for all.”

Hlomuka commended the matriculants’ perseverance, determination, and commitment.

“The matric class of 2024 commenced their high school journey during the peak of COVID-19 and faced unprecedented challenges, including climate impacts. but they triumphed,” Hlomuka said.

Hlomuka commended uMkhanyakude District for leading with an outstanding 92.8%, as well as teachers in the province for their dedication.

Determination pays off for top achievers

Despite coming from a financially poor background, without parental support, matric learner Thobeka Langa has proven that determination and hard work can change your outcomes.

Aged 17, Thobeka from Rustenburg, North West, was among the country's 2024 matric top achievers, who were honoured by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube during a Ministerial Breakfast held in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Monday.

The 39 top achievers were honoured ahead of the announcement of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, which takes place later today.

Speaking to SAnews on the sidelines of the event, Thobeka admitted that she was not expecting to be among the top achievers, especially after a challenging Physics exam.

“It has been a really rough journey, and after writing that Physics Paper, I really thought that all my chances of coming here were shattered, but God had other plans,” said an elated Thobeka.

Thobeka, who is a social grant beneficiary, will be studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. She said her dream is to be among those who make an impact in the world. 

She emphasised the importance of education as a means of opening up doors to a brighter future.

“As SASSA [South African Social Security Agency] grant beneficiaries, we are often undermined. Having grown up without both parents, I really thought that I would not become anything, but here I am now.

“This is confirmation, clarification, fulfilment, and coming to an end of a marathon. After completing my studies, I will be a qualified engineer, probably specialising somewhere. Maybe I will still be in South Africa or abroad. Who knows?” an optimistic Thobeka said.

Another top achiever, Nqubeko Bekwa from Emzamweni High School in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, said he could not believe that he was among the top students.

The 19-year-old, who will be pursuing his Actuarial Science studies at the University of Cape Town, maintained that in life, there are no miracles, but “one must push hard, have a vision and be disciplined” in order to see positive results.

“You must work hard, even though you feel tired and sleepy. I could not sleep at night because I wanted to be here, and once you change your mind set, everything just happens without any struggle,” Bekwa said.

According to the Department of Social Development, out of 882 336 registered learners who sat for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, 697 502 are social grant beneficiaries, representing 79% of registered learners.

“Out of this number, 1 068 of the learners were children who were in conflict with the law during their schooling years,” the department said in a statement.

Gwarube and Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule will announce the NSC results for the class of 2024 in Johannesburg at 6pm. – SAnews.gov.za

The steel industry is critical in the reconstruction and recovery plan for the South African economy, particularly the manufacturing, mining, construction, engineering, and transportation sectors, said the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic).

In a statement responding to ArcelorMittal South Africa’s (AMSA) announcement to wind down its longs steel business at its Newcastle plant, the department said the steel industry is important to the sectors that are at the centre of the industrialisation, localisation and beneficiation programmes of government.

“The department notes with serious concern the announcement by ArcelorMittal South Africa to wind down its longs steel business at its Newcastle plant. In fulfilment of its mandate to work with the private sector in growing the local economy the dtic remains committed to working with AMSA to find a workable and lasting situation,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.

During the course of 2024, AMSA had reached out to various government departments and state-owned entities with requests for different concessions for their business. Having taken heed of these requests, the Minister of the dtic took the decision to form a comprehensive and coordinated approach to resolving the issues raised by AMSA.

“In doing so, the Minister set up a technical working group made up of the relevant stakeholders including the dtic and AMSA, the departments of Electricity and Energy, Transport, as well as Eskom, Transnet and private sector stakeholders.”

The department said the working group held regular engagements up until and well into December 2024.

“This work has been noted in the statement released by AMSA. It has always been, and continues to be the intention of government to continue these engagements until a workable resolution to the problems faced by AMSA and the steel industry is reached,” said the department.

In a press statement on Monday, AMSA said it had taken the decision to wind down the longs business.

“This comes after sustained challenges, including weak economic growth, high logistics and energy costs, and an influx of low-cost steel imports, particularly from China. Persistent high logistics and energy costs, combined with insufficient policy interventions (especially those policy decisions made some time ago (namely, the Price Preference System [PPS] and export scrap tax) relating to the substantial subsidisation of scrap-based steelmaking operations to the detriment of the Newcastle Works - which beneficiates South African-sourced raw materials), have left the longs business unsustainable. Despite extensive consultations with government and stakeholders to find viable solutions to sustain the longs business, progress was insufficient to avert the wind down,” said AMSA.

In its statement on Wednesday, the dtic said that while the immediate task will be on addressing structural issues affecting AMSA’s longs steel business, the broader focus should also be on addressing productivity improvements and supply chain efficiencies, investments in low-carbon technologies, competitiveness and regaining the market share.

“It is also important that public and private sector’ entities and companies commit themselves to procure locally manufactured steel products in their projects. Undoubtedly, such a commitment will contribute positively to aggregate demand, job creation and economic growth in South Africa,” it said.

“AMSA will now transition the longs business into care and maintenance. Steel production is anticipated to cease by late January 2025, with the wind-down of the remaining production processes completed in Q1 2025,” said AMSA.

This wind down decision will directly affect operations constituting Newcastle (in KwaZulu-Natal) and Vereeniging Works (in Gauteng) and AMRAS (the rail and structural subsidiary). 

Newcastle’s coke-making operations will continue, though scaled back to reflect reduced demand. - SAnews.gov.za

Spotlight on interventions for economic empowerment of women

With South Africa officially assuming the G20 Presidency, government is looking forward to rallying the world against all forms of gender-based violence and exploitation of women, through the Working Group on Women Empowerment.

Addressing the closing event for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence gainst Women and Children campaign at Ntsimbini Sports Ground in Port St John’s in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, announced a range of socio-economic interventions to transition vulnerable women to income-generating activities.

Chikunga said economic empowerment was incomplete without women’s meaningful access to land, which was the basis of all economic activity and a source of dignity.

The catalytic interventions for the economic empowerment of women include prioritising transferring productive land and productive assets to women for commercial purposes. 

Working with Transnet Properties, Chikunga said over 20 sites have been identified in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, spanning over six district municipalities.

The sites will be leased to women at highly-subsidised rates, enabling them to develop sustainable enterprises.

“We are actively identifying more sites across all nine provinces, [and] we have also partnered with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to create a value-chain-driven Agricultural Cooperatives Model. 

“By leveraging the CSIR’s intellectual property and advanced technologies, including precision agriculture, this model will equip and prepare women farmers for market success.

“The Minister of Finance recently announced that public procurement makes up around 19% of government spending, totalling R1.5 trillion over the next three years. I have tasked the Women’s Economic Assembly to assemble a team of experts that will dissect Public Procurement and Gender-Responsive Supply Chains to ensure that a minimum of 40% of that R1.5 trillion goes to women-owned businesses,” Chikunga said.

The department was also rethinking financial support structures and incentives.

Chikunga said women-owned businesses do not just need contracts, but the resources to deliver on their contracts and build sustainable enterprises.

While South Africa recognised the important symbiotic relationship between promoting women in science, building equitable societies, and the advancement of humanity, Chikunga noted that currently, women make up less than a third of the workforce across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

She said confronting the historical and ongoing exclusion of women from STEM would be a priority for the department.

“We will be developing tangible programmes and campaigns that are needed to correct societal and cultural beliefs that use gender stereotypes to perpetuate scientific inequality. Science and humanity suffer when women are excluded from STEM.

“We also intend to leverage the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Digital Technologies to improve the wellbeing and prospects of persons living with disabilities,” Chikunga said.

The Minister added that the South African government was looking forward to planning and executing catalytic legacy projects and interventions in collaboration with the G20 family and partners in areas including women in high-tech industries, women in the agricultural value chains, women in the oceans economy, logistics, pharmaceutical industries, and the creative industries. – SAnews.gov.za

Chikunga commends traditional leaders’ support in the fight against GBVF

Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has commended traditional leaders for their continued support in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

“We are deeply touched by the unwavering commitment of our traditional leaders who continue to come together to insist that the elimination of GBVF will happen, not in the future - today!” Chikunga said.

She was speaking at the close of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign at Ntsimbini Sports Ground in Port St John’s, in the Eastern Cape, on Tuesday.

While 10 December marks the end of the campaign, the day also kickstarts government’s intention to confront the scourge of GBVF in South Africa for 365 days.

Highlighting some of the department’s planned interventions to strengthen the campaign against GBVF, Chikunga said the department will continue to call on and join hands with traditional leaders in the fight against GBVF.

She said the National House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders are uniquely positioned to lead a community-driven and sustainable response to GBVF.

The Minister expressed her appreciation to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and all traditional leaders who joined the Goodmen Foundation march against GBVF in Durban, last week.

“The march was not merely symbolic. It is a movement of conviction, a practical expression of Ubuntu - the belief that our humanity is inextricably linked, and none of us is free until all of us are free,” Chikunga said.

Following an engagement with the South African Council of Churches, Chikunga said the department will be ramping up the 16 Days of Activism campaign working with organised religion.

She said the findings of the recently released South African National Gender-Based Violence Prevalence Study: A Baseline Survey on Victimisation and Perpetration, will serve as a guide for immediate action.

“The recommendations of this study will contribute to our ongoing focus on prevention, enhanced protection for victims, and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable. We are currently incorporating it into our five-year strategic plan for the seventh administration.

“We will also continue to mobilise funding from both public and private sector sources to ensure that our interventions against GBVF are adequately resourced. Support for civil society will be crucial in this regard,” Chikunga said.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign was observed under the theme "Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development”.

During the campaign period, which started on 25 November, South Africa reflected on the strides made, including the challenges overcome, and the victories achieved by the country.

Reflecting on what has been done over the past 30 years, Chikunga said for South African women, the past 30 years have been a continuation of a long and mighty walk, and a journey both tragic and heroic.

“Not long ago, women were considered unfit for careers in fields like science, engineering, medicine, and law. The idea of women serving on the bench also seemed far-fetched due to entrenched patriarchal beliefs, however, over the past 30 years, South Africa’s journey to transform the gender and racial composition of the judiciary has been nothing short of exemplary.

“In the past three decades, South African women have gone from the shaping of our constitutional democracy to the historic ascendance of Justice Mandisa Maya as the first South African woman to occupy the position of Chief Justice and Head of the Constitutional Court,” Chikunga said.

The country has also surpassed gender parity in higher education participation rates, with the production of world-renowned women as agriculture industrialists, entrepreneurs, aviators, mariners, engineers, and artists. 
 
The country has further made significant strides in ensuring equal representation in decision-making and law-making structures. Today, women hold 43.5% of the seats in Parliament, occupying 171 out of 400 seats, an increase from 28% representation in 1994.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has officially opened a state-of-the-art STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Lab at the University of Limpopo.

“This STEM Lab represents hope, progress, and opportunity. For the youth in Mamotintane, Ga-Motholo, Mankweng, and surrounding communities, it is a gateway to skills in artificial intelligence, robotics, and data analytics,” Malatsi said on Saturday.

The facility, made possible through strategic partnerships with the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA), STEMpower, DHL and other key stakeholders, will empower students and the surrounding community with critical digital and STEM-related skills, equipping them for a future driven by technology and innovation.

“For educators, it is a chance to inspire the next generation of innovators. And for the unemployed, it is an opportunity to gain meaningful skills for employment or entrepreneurship.

“This lab is not just a resource for the university but for the entire community. It is proof of what we can achieve when government, academia, and industry work together to create sustainable, scalable solutions for digital inclusion,” the Minister said.

He said STEM forms the backbone of the modern economy, driving technological advancements, innovation, and economic growth. 

“By equipping young people with STEM skills, we are preparing them to excel in high-demand fields like artificial intelligence, robotics and data analytics. Let us harness the power of STEM education to build a South Africa where technology serves as a bridge to inclusion and opportunity, ensuring that no one is left behind,” the Minister said.

The lab is part of a broader initiative by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies to expand access to affordable internet and devices, foster skills development, promote the productive use of technology, and position South Africa as a leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) investment destination.

The launch in Limpopo is one of several, with similar labs being established at Walter Sisulu University, King Hintsa TVET College, Ehlanzeni TVET College, and the Central University of Technology. -SAnews.gov.za

Vodacom Group (www.Vodacom.com) has partnered with technology providers to provide young people on the continent with access to digital skills as part of its commitment to driving digital literacy for Africa's next generation. Together with AWS, Microsoft, Skillsoft and other collaborating organisations Vodacom aims to bridge the digital skills gap across eight African countries and upskill 1million young people by 2027.

The Vodacom Group Digital Skills Hub is available in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt (Talimy), the Democratic Republic of Congo (VodaEduc), and in Kenya (Industry Digital Talent Program) to empower the next generation of digital innovators, enabling Africa's digital society and leveraging existing e-learning platforms in the respective markets.

According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), over 230 million jobs will require digital skills in Africa by 2030, yet the continent faces a significant gap in supply and demand for digital expertise.

“The African continent is plagued in many countries with high levels of unemployment, gender inequality, income disparity and limited access to education, healthcare and essential services. These challenges inform our purpose and drives our strategy to connect for a better future, leveraging digital technologies to drive inclusion into the future for the betterment of people. The launch of the Digital Skills Hub is testament to our commitment to pioneering the path to a digital and more inclusive Africa”, says Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub provides access to self-paced, digital skills training for those aged between 18 and 35. This is in addition to Vodacom Group's existing free, e-learning platforms across its markets. E-learning and digital classrooms have made it possible for students in remote or underserved areas to access quality education with platforms such as Talimy in Egypt, e-Fahamu in Tanzania, VodaEduc in the Democratic of Congo (DRC), Faz Crescer in Mozambique and an e-learning platform in South Africa, providing a wealth of online resources, which cater to different learning needs.

“We are extremely excited about this initiative which seeks to inspire the next wave of digital innovators. Our main aim with this initiative is to not only address the digital skills shortage on the continent but to also nurture a pipeline of young talent and in turn advance Africa's digital future, boosting opportunities for empowerment in an inclusive digital economy,” adds, Matimba Mbungela, Chief Human Resources Officer at Vodacom Group.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub is designed to empower the next generation, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and entails fun and engaging practical digital skills training for young people on the continent. AWS Educate is one of the first programs to be offered through the Digital Skills Hub and an additional program to Vodacom's various existing online learning platforms. AWS Educate offers beginners an extensive library of self-paced online training that covers a range of topics from cloud fundamentals to artificial intelligence and machine learning.

“With over 400 million young people between the ages of 15 and 35 in Africa, the continent has the youngest population in the world. Digital is the new currency, it is therefore imperative that we invest in them and provide them with the necessary digital skills that will not only boost their growth and development but that of the continent too,” concludes Joosub.

Transport Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa has called on South Africans to honour the sacrifices of road traffic enforcement officers and recommit to making roads safer for all. 

The Deputy Minister was delivering remarks at the World Remembrance Day of Road Accident Victims at a wreath-laying ceremony for fallen traffic officers in Pretoria on Sunday. 

Hlengwa highlighted the dual tragedy of lives lost to road accidents and those sacrificed by officers safeguarding others.

“Today, we gather to observe a day to reflect, honour, and remember those whose lives have been tragically cut short or forever changed by collisions on the roads globally. We also solemnly remember the fallen traffic law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, trying to prevent road collisions and save lives. 

“As we remember the 69 traffic officers who died in the line duty since 2019, we reflect on the significance of their sacrifice. These officers gave their lives in the pursuit of justice and the protection of others,” he said. 

The majority of these officers, 28 in total, were from Gauteng, followed by 13 from KwaZulu-Natal, nine from Mpumalanga, seven each from the Eastern Cape and Limpopo, two from the National Traffic Police, and one each from the Free State, Northern Cape, and Western Cape.

The Deputy Minister said the officers did not shy away from danger but faced it with courage and resolve. In doing so, he said they showed the nation what true heroism looks like - a commitment to service that goes beyond duty and extends into the realm of sacrifice. 

The Deputy Minister reflected on the alarming road fatality statistics. South Africa recorded 11 883 road deaths last year, a 4.4% decrease from 2022. However, the figure still reflects thousands of shattered lives. 

“These tragedies are not just statistics; they are real people — mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, friends and colleagues. Behind every number is a person with dreams, aspirations, and loved ones, whose world is forever altered,” he said. 

Progress and Renewed Commitments

South Africa has made strides since the launch of the National Road Safety Strategy in 2016, with a 15% reduction in fatalities from the baseline of 13 967 deaths in 2010. Despite this, Hlengwa stressed that progress must accelerate to meet the 2030 goal of halving road fatalities.

In response, the government plans to revise the strategy, setting a target to reduce road deaths by 5% for the 2024/25 financial year. 

“Based on this it is self-evident that South Africa has made progress, achieving 15 percent reduction compared to 2010. Today is not just about grief, however — it is about action. Every life lost is a call to action for all of us to take road safety seriously. 

“As a country we have decided to review our National Road Safety Strategy to accelerate the rate of reduction in fatalities so that we may achieve the set target sooner rather than later. 

“Over the medium-term greater focus will be put on road safety education, engineering and law enforcement. Effective evaluation mechanisms will also be put in place to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency and impact of our programmes. The revised target set is to reduce road fatalities by five (5) percent for the 2024/25 financial year,” Hlengwa said.

A Day of Remembrance and Resolve

Hlengwa paid tribute to road accident victims and their families, urging the nation to remember the human cost behind the statistics. 

“Today, we stand together in the hope that our collective efforts can help prevent future tragedies. We remember that every life is precious, and every loss is felt deeply within families, communities, and nations.

“As we light a candle in remembrance, let us also light a flame of hope — hope for safer roads, for a future where fewer families have to experience the heartache of losing a loved one to a road accident,” he said.

The Deputy Minister outlined critical actions to prevent road accidents, including driver education, improving road infrastructure, and supporting survivors. 

“Road accidents are often preventable. Whether through better infrastructure, safer vehicles, responsible driving, or stricter enforcement of laws, there is much we can do to reduce the number of lives lost on our roads,” he urged.

Globally, South Africa lags behind some nations that have achieved remarkable reductions in road fatalities. Hlengwa pointed out that ten countries reduced fatalities by over 50% last year, providing a benchmark for South Africa to aspire to. – SAnews.gov.za
