Epson’s Heat-Free inkjet printing technology, the efficient and sustainable solution for the Education and Healthcare sectors

Location: Business
GITEX Africa

On the sidelines of its participation in GITEX AFRICA 2024 (www.GITEXAfrica.com), Epson held a press conference where it unveiled the results of recent research it conducted in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, highlighting the common challenges faced in the Education and Healthcare sectors due to inefficient and unsustainable printing technology.

To meet these challenges, Epson remains committed to providing increasingly innovative, efficient and sustainable printing solutions. The impact of printing on student learning and healthcare staff efficiency is crucial.

Students need printed materials for their learning, but it's equally important that this printing is both efficient and environmentally friendly. This enables them to access quality educational resources while integrating responsible practices. Similarly, for healthcare staff, having efficient and sustainable printing solutions saves valuable time, which translates into greater efficiency in the delivery of care. This balance between operational efficiency and environmental sustainability in printing is the offering Epson brings to these two vital sectors to support both student learning and quality healthcare.

In the education sector, the vast majority of students (91%) in the MEA region (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Kenya) recognize that printed learning materials help them better understand and retain information. Despite this, they often feel conflicted because they fear that excessive printing is perceived as being harmful to the environment. Nonetheless, the study also showed that 89% of the same respondent students recognize that their learning would be improved if their educational institution had more sustainable printing solutions, such as Heat-Free inkjet printers, which consume less energy and produce less waste than laser printers.

In the health sector, workers in the MEA region lose 5850 hours each year, equating to 731 working days; due to slow or non-functional printers. This loss of time has a negative impact on patient care, leading to delays in updating patient records, booking appointments and sharing information. Healthcare workers are calling for action to improve printing technology and reduce interruptions.

92% of healthcare workers believe their IT department should provide faster, lower-maintenance printers to reduce the difficulties caused by printing interruptions.

Environmental concerns also come into play, with 83% of respondents agreeing that the environmental impact of unsustainable printers is a major concern for them personally.

"In both sectors, the use of Epson's Heat-Free inkjet printing technology is presented as a sustainable solution. Heat-Free inkjet printers consume less energy than traditional laser printers, and require fewer moving parts and consumables. By switching to this technology, educational establishments and health services could not only improve their operational efficiency, but also help reduce their environmental impact. It would also meet students' learning needs and improve patient outcomes, while reducing costs and increasing user satisfaction." says Ilias Azzaoui, Epson General Manager - French-speaking Africa and DomCom.

Visitors can discover Epson solutions at stand 4C-40 in hall 4 of GITEX AFRICA, taking place from May 29 to 31, 2024.

Place Bab Jdid, Boulevard Al Yarmouk - Marrakech (opposite Mamounia Hotel).

Government welcomes conclusion of elections

Location: News

Government welcomes conclusion of elections

Government has welcomed the successful conclusion of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, which ushers in the seventh democratic administration in the 30 years of South Africa’s freedom and democracy.

“These elections stand as testament to our vibrant and dynamic constitutional democracy and affirms our faith and confidence in our open democratic processes,” the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said on Monday.

Government thanked the 16 248 027 citizens who exercised their Constitutional right as well as civic duty to cast their ballots with “admirable patience, tolerance and enthusiasm”.

According to the Electoral Commission (IEC), the voter turnout for these elections was at 58.58%.

“This marks a watershed feat in the journey of our inclusive and participatory democracy as espoused by the Electoral Amendment Act 1 of 2023.

“The completion of this rigorous electoral process that comprised multiple milestones, from voter registration to actual voting and ultimately the vote counting as well as official announcement of the outcome of the election by the Electoral Commission of South Africa signals a formal end to the elections.

“The ‘snaking’ queues that characterised Voting Day across the length and breadth of our beloved country were demonstrative of a proud nation and a responsible citizenry, reminiscent of our first democratic elections,” GCIS said.

Government also congratulated the IEC for once again concluding a peaceful, free and fair election.

“The IEC is applauded for its transparency throughout the counting, verification, capturing and auditing process, which alleviated transgressions in the election outcomes.

“For the first time, South Africans had multiple options at the ballot with 70 political parties contesting the elections, 11 independent candidates and 52 national contestants. In total, there were over 14 903 candidates vying for 887 seats in the National and Provincial Legislatures,” GCIS said.

Since the dispensation of freedom and democracy in 1994, South Africa has now held seven successive free and fair democratic elections.

“We welcome the declaration by various domestic and international observers affirming the 2024 elections as free and fair which serves as a vote of confidence in the integrity as well as credibility of the country’s electoral processes.

“The elections were encouragingly competitive and contested in a remarkable spirit of political maturity and tolerance. Government congratulates all political parties and wishes them well in their upcoming term of public office.

“Government acknowledges the valuable contributions of citizens, community leaders, election officials, volunteers and various government departments who played a pivotal part in the successful conclusion of the elections. We also commend our law enforcement agencies who worked diligently to ensure that these elections took place in a peaceful, nonviolent, and safe environment,” GCIS said.

It appealed to citizens to respect the authority of the IEC and all empowering provisions to execute its mandate.

“The elections results have been officially declared free and fair. We move forward to ensure a peaceful and stable South Africa. Any attempt to undermine the authority of the State and South Africa’s constitutional order will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly,” GCIS said.

GCIS Acting Director-General Nomonde Mnukwa said the elections were another milestone for South Africa as the country celebrates 30 years of freedom and democracy.

“This reinforces our dedication to adhering to democratic electoral processes. Government extends its appreciation to all stakeholders who made it possible for the country to conduct elections in a secure environment,” Mnukwa said.

The public has been urged to refrain from sharing information in any form of pictures, audios or videos that perpetuate misinformation and disinformation or seek to incite any form of violence.

“Our law enforcement agencies continue to be deployed across the country to ensure that peace and safety prevails post the elections.

“The Chief Justice has already gazetted the rules for the first sitting of the National Assembly, the National Council of Provinces and Provincial Legislatures, of which the date should be confirmed within 14 days after the elections results are declared.

“When the first sitting of Parliament takes place, the Chief Justice first presides over the process of electing the Office Bearers of Parliament, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces,” GCIS said.

Government reiterated its dedication to continue providing services to its citizens while awaiting the finalisation of the smooth Parliamentary transition. – SAnews.gov.za

Security Cluster ready to enforce law and order

Security Cluster ready to enforce law and order

The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster says it stands ready to deal with any threats of instability ahead of the declaration of the election results in Midrand this evening.

“As the Security Cluster, we assure South Africans that law enforcement agencies stand ready to maintain peace and stability, as they have done throughout the election period.

“Any attempt to undermine the authority of the State and South Africa’s constitutional order will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly,” Cele assured citizens on Sunday.

The Minister outlined measures taken by law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and stability during the election process.

WATCH |

As the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) prepares to announce the election results, Cele stated that the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has confirmed its readiness to ensure a peaceful environment following the election results declaration.

“We would like to assure the country that the Constitution provides the mandate to manage the elections to the IEC. Therefore, the decision to declare the results rests solely with the IEC, in accordance with the law.”

In addition, the Minister said the law provides mechanisms to raise disputes with the electoral processes and only those prescribed processes must be followed.

“As such, there cannot be any room for threats of instability to register objections or concerns about the electoral process.”

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise emphasised respect for the Constitution and each other’s rights.

She told journalists that while they have not singled out any party for engagement ahead of the release of the results, they have reiterated their calls for the respect for the rule of law.

“We have, before the elections, called for calm. We have also asked people not to do that which is not legal in this country. We had also indicated that we would not tolerate anybody breaching or tarnishing the name of South Africa thus far because we have always behaved according to our Constitution in the past elections.”

Modise appealed to all parties and citizens to respect the rights of others.

“We are hoping that our plea to all parties involved will be heard by everybody involved… We do not think that we want to have a conversation across or with one individual party. We are appealing to South Africans to respect the laws of South Africa,” the Defence Minister pleaded.

Modise said her department had learnt lessons from the unrest in July 2021.

“There were some issues [during the July 2021 unrest]. We arrived a little bit late as the Defence Department. I can assure you that that was a good lesson. We are not late these days. We get there on time, when needed. We are prepared. We don’t have to have help from somewhere else to get to where we are going. We have said that we will not tolerate anybody interfering with the rights of the rest of the citizens,” Modise said.

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, emphasised that nobody was exempt from the law.

“… Anybody who threatens the security or the stability of the country, anybody who wants to undermine the constitutional order of the country, irrespective of who they are… the law enforcement will have to deal with them.”

According to Ntshavheni, all political parties signed a code of conduct that prescribes how they must conduct themselves.

“… The violation of the code of conduct will then be enforced because that’s what all political parties agreed to before we entered this phase of the elections.” – SAnews.gov.za

President signs law allowing emergency access to retirement funds

Location: News

President signs law allowing emergency access to retirement funds

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed into law the Revenue Laws Amendment Bill of 2023, which establishes a “two-pot” system that gives members of retirement funds access to retirement savings without having to resign or cash out entire pension funds.

The amendment law introduces a “two-pot” retirement system to address the concerns related to lack of preservation before retirement and lack of access to retirement funds by households in financial distress.

According to a statement by the Presidency, this retirement system comprises a savings and retirement component for contributions made after 1 September 2024, while historical retirement benefits will be housed in a vested component.

Individuals will have access to amounts in the savings component before retirement for times of financial distress, and the amounts in the retirement component are preserved until retirement.

“The primary objective of the two-pot retirement system is to provide flexibility for fund members to access their retirement savings during emergencies, without necessitating resignation.

“The reform introduced by the legislation strives to strike a balance between long-term security and immediate needs, recognising life's unpredictability,” said the Presidency.

It permits fund members to access a portion of their savings during crises, such as those seen during the COVID-19 challenges.

These changes ensure the retirement system remains responsive to diverse financial needs, supporting both long-term financial security and immediate assistance during emergencies.

Traditional retirement systems primarily focus on long-term savings, often lacking the adaptability to address immediate financial crises.

President Ramaphosa said: “While we are continuing the task of growing our economy to create more opportunities for all South Africans and reduce the financial vulnerability affecting many individuals and households, the new retirement system offers protection and dignity to those who need it the most to overcome financial stress.”

South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport Amendment Bill

Meanwhile, the President has also signed into law the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport Amendment Bill, which effects a number of amendments that bring South Africa in line with the World Anti-Doping Code of 2021.

The World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) role is to promote, coordinate, and monitor the fight against drugs in sports.

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) is a public entity under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and is defined in the amended legislation as the national anti-doping organisation.

The legislative amendment also clarifies the powers of SAIDS.

The SAIDS has  major role to play in preventing the use of prohibited substances in the South African and international sporting environment that are contrary to the principles of fair play and the health and well-being of athletes.

SADC electoral mission gives Elections 2024 seal of approval

The Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) has described the pre-election and voting phases of South Africa’s National and Provincial Elections as having being held in an “orderly, peaceful and free atmosphere”.

South Africa’s elections were held by the Electoral Commission (IEC) on Wednesday, 29 May.

In a preliminary statement, Former Zambian Vice President and SEOM Head, Enock Kavindele, said some 84 observers were deployed to all nine provinces and they engaged with stakeholders from all parts of society on the elections.

“The mission observed that the country was calm and peaceful in the pre-election, election-day, and the immediate post-election period. I must emphasise that this was a very conducive environment for the elections, where only a few isolated incidences of political violence were reported.

“It was the concern of stakeholders that the incidences prevented special voting and final election campaign events in the areas. Apart from these isolated incidences, our observers deployed across the country witnessed numerous peaceful, well planned, and highly attended political rallies,” he said.

He noted that the South African Police Service (SAPS) “maintained its vigilance and preserved peace” during the election period with “more resources to high-risk areas to address eventualities”.

Best practice and recommendations

The mission praised the IEC for its best practices on the following:

  • Online voter registration for citizens, including in the diaspora, which encouraged young and first-time voters to register;
  • With the support of the Department of International Relations and Co-operation, for facilitating voting by South African residents abroad;
  • Implementation of special voting, particularly to include voters who for reasons of infirmity or other challenges, would not have been able to cast their votes at the polling stations;
  • Swift responsiveness to false, misleading information, particularly online/social media; and
  • Openness to the public and close liaison with political parties and independent candidates.

Kavindele said that while the mission to the South African elections has not expired yet, it has made some recommendations.

These include:

  • Government and the National Assembly are urged to ensure that substantive electoral law reforms are debated and adopted early in the next electoral cycle in order to avoid the introduction of electoral reforms close to the election periods
  • The IEC is urged to assess options on how best to ensure that the Voter Management Devices do not present challenges encountered on Election Day. The IEC could consider a manual voter’s roll to be displayed at polling stations so that voters can verify where they are registered
  • The IEC is encouraged to review its civic and voter education programmes, learning from the challenges experienced in 2024, and design new programmes that comprehensively address the new electoral processes.
  • The SAPS should consider recruiting adequate police officers to be permanently stationed all polling stations.

“In conclusion, the SEOM observed that the pre-election and voting phases of the 2024 National and Provincial Assembly Elections were professionally organised, and conducted in an orderly, peaceful and free atmosphere, which enabled the voters to express their democratic will and those who sought office to campaign freely.

“The Mission commends the people of South Africa for the political maturity, spirit of tolerance and calm that generally prevailed during this electoral period. In the event of any electoral disputes, the Mission appeals to all contestants to channel their concerns through established legal procedures and processes,” Kavindele said. – SAnews.gov.za

Safety operations to continue throughout SA

Safety operations to continue throughout SA

Minister of Police Bheki Cele has reiterated that police operations will continue until after the elections to ensure that citizens are safe.

Addressing members of the media at the Electoral Commission’s Results Operations Centre on Friday, the Minister said safety operations for the election period will end between 24 hours and 48 hours after the announcement of the election results.

“We pulled all our resources together… National Treasury has provided a budget for transportation and accommodation of law enforcement officials and overtime payments. We have deployed more than 17 000 police officers from various provinces to KwaZulu-Natal to ensure the elections take place in a safe and secure environment,” Cele said in Midrand at the National Results Operations Centre (ROC).

South Africans went to the polls on Wednesday to cast their votes in the 2024 General Elections, which are stated to be the most contested in the history of the country.

With reports of post-election violence doing the rounds, the Minister assured citizens that authorities are on high alert to deal with any threats.

The Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) Cluster has been implementing coordinated and intelligence-led operations both pre- and during the elections, where multi-departmental teams work together to ensure that all South Africans are safe.

Coordination is managed by National and Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structures of the JCPS Cluster and the Electoral Commission (IEC).

The Minister said these plans will continue post elections.

Further to this, interdepartmental priority committees were established in 2023 at both national and provincial level to look at safety and security planning.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure did a thorough threat and crime pattern analysis which informed a security plan which ensures that “nothing is left to chance”.

SA elections were held under “peaceful” conditions – African Union Mission

Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, has declared that South Africa’s 2024 National and Provincial Elections were held under peaceful conditions.

The observer mission was deployed to South Africa from 21 May at the invitation of the South African Government and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

This as South Africans went to the polls on Wednesday, 29 May.

“Overall, the mission notes that the 2024 South African National and Provincial Elections were pivotal for the country’s democratic future and had implications for political stability within South Africa and the sub-region.

“South Africans freely exercised their constitutional right to vote and voted peacefully. The participation of youth and women offers hope for the future of democracy in Africa, and indicates an increased trust in the electoral process.

"While the electoral process is still ongoing, we implore all aggrieved parties to use the existing election dispute resolution mechanisms to address their grievances, if any,” Kenyatta said in a preliminary statement.

AUEOM staff have been deployed to several parts of the country to observe aspects of the elections.

“Since arriving in South Africa, the AUEOM has engaged with key stakeholders, including the IEC, the media, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), faith-based organisations, representatives of the international community, citizens' observer groups and Heads of other Election Observer Missions, the African Diplomatic Corps and the international community, and academia.

“The Mission deployed 21 teams of 65 observers across nine provinces to observe the special voting on 28 May and polling on 29 May 2024, focusing on various aspects of the electoral process. A final report with comprehensive findings and recommendations will be issued two months after the elections,” Kenyatta stated.

He observed that the National and Provincial Elections (NPE2024) was held with “a renewed enthusiasm among South Africans to strengthen their democratic gains”.

“This election was notably competitive due to the emergence of several new political parties. Despite the peaceful and credible nature of the previous six elections, the 2024 elections were marked by a tense political environment, intensified by several litigations.

“The pre-election period saw heightened tensions and concerns over the potential misuse of social media for spreading fake news, disinformation, and misinformation, which could incite violence.

“Nevertheless, the elections proceeded without major incidents, maintaining a pattern of peaceful conduct. Despite the challenges and tensions, the 2024 elections were conducted peacefully, demonstrating the resilience of South Africa's democratic processes,” Kenyatta said. – SAnews.gov.za

Law enforcement in North West saluted for ensuring election safety

The North West Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) has thanked law enforcement officials in the province for ensuring that the National and Provincial Elections were held without major incident in that province.

Election Day for South Africans was on Wednesday, with special votes conducted on Monday and Tuesday.

“It is now common cause that the elections in the province were without any major or significant security breaches, and this is highly due to the command, management, commitment, dedication and support of all the JOINTS departments, the IEC, communities and civil society in the province.

“The joint command of the PROVJOINTS… would like to express its sincerest appreciation to all the men and women of different law enforcement agencies and different entities, who heeded the call of duty by working tirelessly and diligently to make sure that the 2024 epoch making elections were held in a safe and secure, peaceful and conducive environment.

“The dedication, discipline, cooperation and commitment displayed by all is testament to the spirit of patriotism and further enhanced the image of South Africa internationally, given the fact that they eyes of the world were on this year’s elections,” the PROVJOINTS said in a statement.

It stated that the successful holding of peaceful elections was due to “months and weeks of detailed and integrated planning”.

The PROVJOINTS explained that it, together with the IEC, took into account many factors including budgetary and cost containment constraints without jeopardising and compromising the safety, security and credibility for all stakeholders including the public.

“The PROVJOINTS, which was entrusted with the mammoth task and responsibility of securing the entire process, was for the first time faced with an unprecedented high number of political parties; more than thirty and three different ballot papers and the first time use of Voter Management Devices (VMDs) by the IEC, in addition to managing the stability situation in the Province.

“Despite the uncertainty and threats of disruptions of elections, the PROVJOINTS managed to deliver on its assurance to the IEC and all the people of North West that elections will be held in a safe, secure and conducive environment,” the statement read. – SAnews.gov.za

Police commended for dedication during elections

Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster for their unwavering dedication and professional conduct during the policing of the 2024 General Elections in the province.

“Force deployments, as well as the collective efforts by all stakeholders, played a pivotal role in ensuring a peaceful elections process,” said Otola, who is the Chairperson of the Provincial Joint Intelligence Structure.

Otola acknowledged the professional conduct of all law enforcement officers who executed their duties with integrity and in an impartial manner and commended the upstanding behaviour of the communities in the province.

“No serious incidents were reported and law enforcement agencies swiftly responded to all occurrences reported,” Otola said.

The Commissioner commended the cooperation with law enforcement and Electoral Commission (IEC) officials’ contribution towards a safe and stable environment.

“Law enforcement in conjunction with all JCPS Cluster stakeholders will not relax efforts during the announcement of the results and proceeding celebrations. Crime prevention operations and disruptive actions will continue unabated to ensure the safety and security of all inhabitants in the province,” Otola said.

High police presence will continue until post elections

Meanwhile, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has assured the people of Gauteng that a high police presence will continue in the province until the election process is complete.

“No serious incidents were reported during the casting of votes in Gauteng, even in areas that were classified as high risk,” Mthombeni said.

Joined by the Director-General for the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Doctor Mashabane and Ekurhuleni Chief of Police Isaac Mapeyeye, Mthombeni visited the Provincial Results Operation Centre in Alberton on Wednesday.

There he briefed the media on how law enforcement agencies were able to maintain law and order as people were casting their votes in Gauteng.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has also assured that police deployed at strategic areas in KwaZulu-Natal will remain in place until after the new government has taken over the reigns and the province is declared stable.

Mkhwanazi and the National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, monitored the police deployments from the skies and flew over some voting stations, including eThekwini District, which has the highest number of voting stations which were categorised as high risk. – SAnews.gov.za
