According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global trade hit a record $33 trillion in 2024, with developing economies, including Africa, playing a growing role in that expansion.

Filipino Artists Conduct Art Workshops in South Africa
As part of its cultural diplomacy program, the Philippine Embassy in Pretoria, in partnership with the Kapatiran at Ugnayan ng Natatanging Sining at Talentong Pilipino (KUNST), organized back-to-back art workshops in South Africa.
The first workshop, which was held on 27 April 2025 at the Philippine Embassy multifunction hall, was attended by members of the Filipino community in South Africa, as well as personnel, dependents, and friends of the Embassy.
The second workshop was organized on 29 April 2025 at the Javett Art Centre (JAC) for art enthusiasts from the University of Pretoria and selected South African youth.
The workshops were facilitated by visiting artists from the Philippines, namely, Aris Bagtas, Jr., Remo Valenton, Loriel Castillo, and Ariosto Dale Bagtas, using oil pastel and felt paper. Participants were keen to learn various drawing and coloring techniques since it was their first time to use this medium.
The workshops also enabled the Filipino artists to introduce to the South African participants the concept of Filipinism, whose guiding philosophy is to allow Filipino visual artists to infuse the essence of being a Filipino into their artworks.
The Filipino artists are in South Africa for the Viaje 5 Filipinism: What Makes Art Filipino exhibition, which ran from 23 to 30 April 2025 at the JAC, a prestigious art gallery in Pretoria. This is the first exhibition from Filipino artists mounted by the gallery since its establishment in 2017.
The Embassy will continue to tap into the potent power of cultural diplomacy to deepen the friendship between the Filipino and South African people, as well as build a positive brand for the Philippines in the host country.

Africa’s Coffee Culture Comes Home
South Africa, Uganda and Kenya topped the podium at this year's Africa Barista Championship. But the real winner at this year's Africa Barista Championship was African coffee culture itself.
From 24 to 28 February 2025, the scent of homegrown coffee filled the air in Dar es Salaam, as 23 baristas from 14 countries competed for continental recognition before packed crowds. Held alongside the 21st African Fine Coffees Conference and Exhibition (AFCA), the event marked a turning point: a bold celebration of local talent, regional markets, and Africa's fast-growing appreciation for its own specialty coffee – especially robusta.
‘This isn't just about coffee-making,' said Régine Léonie Guion-Firmin, an Authorized Specialty Coffee Association trainer (AST) based in Nairobi, Kenya. ‘It's about youth creating new career paths, fostering café culture, and driving demand for high-quality, locally produced coffee. You could feel the energy and pride.'
Behind the spotlight on brewing mastery, a deeper transformation was underway. With growing consumer interest across the continent, local roasters, baristas and entrepreneurs are championing African coffee for African consumers – redefining value not through export alone, but through domestic engagement.
In Cameroon, Thierry Djanga of TerrifiCoffee is part of that movement. His coffee placed second in a tasting competition at the event, but his priorities lie closer to home.
‘I'm happy to pay a premium for quality robusta from African producers,' he said. ‘Not just to export it, but to serve it locally. Consumers here are ready to pay for excellence. It's a virtuous circle that benefits everyone.'
The event also spotlighted technical capacity-building. A Barista Bootcamp, co-led by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Robusta Coffee Agency of Africa and Madagascar (ACRAM), trained more than 20 baristas in sensory analysis and brewing techniques aligned with World Barista Championship standards. The initiative, part of the ACP Business-Friendly programme, is helping professionalize the coffee sector and deepen local market appreciation for specialty-grade robusta.
Mozambique's participation was an eye-opener for many attendees unfamiliar with the country's emerging coffee sector. Meanwhile, Egypt's growing café scene brought new energy to discussions on regional trade and branding opportunities.
As coffee professionals, producers and policymakers shared ideas throughout the week, one message rang clear: Africa's coffee story is no longer confined to its export potential. The continent's producers, baristas, and consumers are reclaiming the narrative, one cup at a time.

President engages with various technologies at the CSIR
President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged with various researchers and technologies on his visit to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) earlier this week.
The President was hosted by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande when he toured several facilities at the CSIR on Tuesday.
Among the technologies the President interacted with, was the Oceans and Coastal Information Management System (OCIMS), a sophisticated digital platform developed by the CSIR.
It enables South Africa to monitor, protect, and sustainably manage its extensive coastal and oceanic zones through real-time, data-driven insights.
The initiative is led by Dr Lulama Wakaba, Executive Cluster Manager of the Next-Gen Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The initiative is a collaboration between the CSIR, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the South African Environmental Observation Network, and the South African Weather Service.
“Many people don’t realise this, but South Africa’s exclusive economic zone, our marine territory, is larger than our land mass. That gives us an extraordinary opportunity in the blue economy, which holds immense potential for GDP [gross domestic product] growth, job creation, and sustainable development,” Wakaba explained.
According to the CSIR, OCIMS is not just a data repository, but also an integrated, scalable system that forms the backbone of multiple research projects used by the state to manage and safeguard marine environments.
These range from coastal erosion monitoring and maritime traffic control, to harmful algal bloom forecasting, oil spill detection, and marine spatial planning.
By using satellite data, sensor networks, and intelligent analytics, the system ensures that South Africa’s coastal resources are preserved and fully utilised for economic benefits.
“What we’re showcasing is a living example of applied science. This system translates complex marine data into actionable insights that policymakers and environmental authorities can use to make informed decisions. It’s about turning scientific research into national impact,” Wakaba explained.
The importance of OCIMS is amplified by South Africa’s strategic position at the meeting point of two oceans, with more than 3 000 km of coastline.
The country’s location, combined with the rising threats of climate change and unsustainable exploitation, make the need for intelligent ocean governance urgent.
“For us, the real breakthrough lies in unlocking the power of science and innovation to support the state's capacity to manage this frontier responsibly,” he said.
“From supporting marine biodiversity to bolstering economic development, OCIMS is a cornerstone in building resilient, knowledge-based ocean governance.”
The CSIR said having President Ramaphosa visit the exhibition was both a validation and a celebration of the platform’s significance.
“What we hope to communicate is the strategic power we can unlock when we take up the mantle of what the CSIR stands for, applying cutting-edge science and technology to our national priorities. In this instance, it’s the blue economy, a massive frontier that, if fully harnessed, can transform our country’s economic trajectory.”
The CSIR’s work on OCIMS also supports international obligations, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, climate resilience efforts, and commitments under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
It also provides South African citizens and coastal communities with tools to better understand and protect the natural wealth that surrounds them.
“Our oceans are not just scenic landscapes; they are vital economic assets and ecosystems,” he said.
“OCIMS is about equipping our country with the means to both care for and benefit from those assets responsibly and sustainably.”
With this bold initiative, the CSIR said OCIMS stands as a beacon of what is possible when innovation meets vision and when digital infrastructure is aligned with national imperatives.
During his visit, the President hailed the CSIR as a “South African success story” as the institution marks 80 years since its establishment.

The inaugural Lobelo la Dipitsi Traditional Horse Racing event, held at Bloomtech Lodge in Vryburg at the weekend, celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the North West province while also stimulating local economic growth.
According to the North West Provincial Government (NWPG), Lobelo la Dipitsi represents a significant milestone in the province’s initiative to use traditional sports for economic development.
The race attracted an influx of visitors from across the province and neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Namibia, boosting tourism and fostering cross-border collaboration.
A key feature of the event was the small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMME) exhibition, which showcased 69 stalls supported by the Department of Economic Development, Conservation, Environment, and Tourism (DEDECT)and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.
These enterprises, ranging from flea market vendors to informal traders, displayed a variety of artisanal products, including handcrafted African-themed clothing, footwear, organic herbs, spices, perfumes, and wooden vases.
The gathering was attended by Premier Lazarus Mokgosi and the DEDECT MEC, Bitsa Lenkopane with the MEC emphasising the race’s role in economic transformation, saying it is not just a celebration of cultural heritage but also a strategic initiative to drive local business growth.
This platform empowers Black entrepreneurs, facilitates job creation, and strengthens the local economy.
“Through the North West Gambling Board, we envisage empowering emerging race associations with compliance in terms of acquiring relevant licenses with gambling legislations.”
During a walkabout of the flea market, the MEC engaged directly with small business owners to assess their experiences and the impact of the event on their enterprises.
She alluded to the fact that the department will continue to offer support to small businesses and cooperatives to ensure that their products are well packaged, properly labelled, and adhere to the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) requirements.
“The economic activity generated by the event reaffirmed the potential of public-private partnerships in promoting sustainable economic development.”
The event reached its highlight with an exciting prize-giving ceremony, officiated by the province’s leadership.
Lenkopane commended the participation of young riders and the involvement of regional partners from Botswana, Namibia, and Lesotho, highlighting the significance of this initiative in fostering strong economic and cultural ties.
“I am confident that Lobelo la Dipitsi has the potential to grow into a flagship event on North West’s tourism calendar,” she added.

Chinese Traditional Culture Presented in Pretoria Market
On 22 February 2025, the Chinese Embassy in South Africa held a Lantern Festival themed activity at the famous Boeremark in Pretoria to promote traditional Chinese culture. Minister Li Zhigang attended the event.
A number of exhibition areas were set up on the spot. Locals were invited to taste tangyuan, the traditional Chinese delicacy. They received Chinese culture themed books and souvenirs, watched Chinese martial arts and dance performances, and learned about the origin and customs of the Lantern Festival, as well as the 24 solar terms and 12 zodiac signs. Traditional Chinese culture was presented in a graphic, vivid way. The game of pitch-pot was played and the 12 zodiac seals were presented to attract more people to participate and feel the charm of Chinese culture.
Chinese culture is profound and has a long history. This event allowed the local people to appreciate the profound Chinese culture in a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere, and to enjoy the festivity while savouring the delicious food. It not only showed the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture, but also built a bridge of communication and understanding for people of different cultural backgrounds.

Colloquium to discuss developments in intellectual property
Intellectual property and technology commercialisation will come under the spotlight at a colloquium that will be hosted by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).
Wednesday’s colloquium will be held under the theme: "Driving Innovation and Positioning Intellectual Property Commercialisation for a Better and Inclusive South Africa".
According to the Minister of the dtic, Parks Tau, the session will provide a platform to exchange ideas and experiences on addressing challenges hindering successful technology commercialisation, and what measures can be taken to address these challenges.
He said the session, which the dtic will host in partnership with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), will focus on enhancing awareness and understanding of intellectual property (IP), technology management, and the commercialisation process.
Discussions will cover the advancement of new technologies and their impact on the IP landscape and the commercialisation of these innovations.
The session will also explore strategies for innovating, scaling, and commercialising more effectively during and after a pandemic.
“The National System of Innovation stakeholders will exchange ideas and share experiences on overcoming challenges in intellectual property and technology commercialisation. The key focus areas include addressing barriers to successful commercialisation, improving access to venture capital funding, enhancing knowledge of equity structures, and creating effective market channels,” the Minister said.
The session will bring together international and local expert speakers in the field of IP and technology commercialisation, including commercialisation specialists, IP Merchant Banks, venture capitalists, incubators and fund finders, among others.
Significantly, the session will also see high school and tertiary students participating in order to instil an interest in IP.
“The learners will participate in an interactive session,, where they will be taken through the exciting journey of IP and technology development.
“This session will stimulate and harness a culture of innovation and creativity amongst South African school learners, build a future generation that will be ready and attuned to the skills needs of the 4IR [Fourth Industrial Revolution] and be a generation of job creators rather than job seekers,” Tau said.
Some of the topics that will be discussed include technology development and commercialisation, intellectual property in successful commercialisation of products and services, and understanding IP rights and their role in technology transfer and economic growth.
The colloquium will have exhibition stands for innovators to display their products and services.
The exhibition will be used to showcase support offered by government to innovators through different funding instruments.

The countdown to the North Regional Durban Business Fair has begun, which will see 150 businesses showcasing their products and services.
The eThekwini Municipality is gearing up to host the North Regional Durban Business Fair from 28 - 30 March 2025 at the Bridge City Shopping Centre in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
The third Regional Fair for the 2024/25 financial year, will provide businesses a platform for networking, business growth, empowerment and collaboration.
The exhibitors will also have opportunities to engage with potential customers, including government and municipal entities, financial institutions and fellow entrepreneurs.
The attendees will have the opportunity to participate in business seminars, where they will gain first-hand insights from industry leaders, as well as representatives from both private and public agencies.
In a recent statement, the municipality said the exhibition will run simultaneously with the two-day Business Indaba, which will explore key industry trends and provide valuable business information and opportunities.
“The Construction Development Indaba segment will kick off the exhibition on 28 March, bringing together established companies, agencies and entrepreneurs to present opportunities for emerging businesses. Topics will include how small, medium and micro enterprises can leverage artificial intelligence.
“Businesses will also be capacitated on how to engage in the Inner-City Regeneration and property development processes. This will offer valuable guidance for growth within the construction and development sectors,” the municipality said.
The focus will then shift to the Women’s Economic Empowerment Engagement on 29 March, with discussions centred on how women can empower each other through mentorship, networking, and collaboration.
Leading South African business figures are expected to drive the discussions during the Women’s Economic Empowerment Engagement.
“eThekwini Municipality, which established the Women's Economic Empowerment Programme, 19 years ago, will also highlight the achievements and present success stories of the programme, while outlining opportunities available for women entrepreneurs,” the municipality said.
The fair will also serve as an important hub for presenting international opportunities, including imports and exports. The Junior International Chamber will be exhibiting at the fairat the International Pavilion.
