SA welcomes US$300 billion commitment for climate finance

SA welcomes US$300 billion commitment for climate finance

Government has welcomed the new finance deal of US$300 billion per year by 2035 - which was committed by high-income economies, to finance climate action for developing economies.

The deal was clinched at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), which concluded in the early hours of Sunday in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The agreement signals to private sector and multilateral development banks to scale up financing to developing economies to US$1.3 trillion per year by 2035.

“The decision underscores the importance of reforming the multilateral financial architecture, to make it fit for purpose to address the climate crisis. It also calls for scaled up support for climate action from multilateral financial institutions through grant-based and concessional financing,” Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Deputy Director-General for Climate Change and Air Quality Management Maesela Kekana said on Monday.

Kekana, who was the Chief Negotiator, said the decision further underscored the need to reduce barriers and address disenablers faced by developing economies in such as limited fiscal space, high levels of debt and high cost of capital.

South Africa’s delegation at the conference was led by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, who said the decisions that were adopted at COP29 are “a win for the country”.

“Parties adopted the Baku Climate Unity Pact consisting of a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, Global Goal on Adaptation and Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Ambition and Implementation Work Programme as well as the key decisions on implementing the Paris Agreement’s Article 6.2 and 6.4.

“The adoption of Article 6.2 and 6.4 decision on carbon markets will allow South Africa and other developing economies to initiate new carbon market projects, which will facilitate investments in green technologies and economic opportunities,” the department said.

Going into the negotiations, the Minister was optimistic parties would take meaningful decisions toward quantifying quantify resources for developing economies, to meet ambitious climate targets.

“There have been complaints from other parties about the leadership of the COP29 Presidency and that the decisions were not reached through full consensus. However, for South Africa, the decisions that were adopted are a win.

“While we understand the frustration expressed by some parties, we do see the outcomes as a significant step in the right direction as it is more than what we had going into the negotiations and we can now build on that, especially given that South Africa will be the next President of the G20,” George said.

South Africa’s negotiating team was particularly pleased about the decision on the Mitigation Work Programme, which was Co-Chaired by Minister George and his Norwegian counterpart, Tore O. Sandvik.

“The Mitigation Work Programme will provide further opportunities to share experiences and match investment needs with investors. I am pleased with the outcome,” said Minister George.

On adaptation, parties are on track to finalise the work on the adaptation indicators to track progress in the implementation of the global goal on adaptation, at COP30 in Brazil in 2025.

“The conference also welcomed the rapid institutionalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund. Under the leadership of South Africa and France, the fund is expected to disburse funds to climate vulnerable communities in mid-2025. Team South Africa believes that COP29 was a huge success, which has inspired hope that we will be able to do more in future,” the department said. -SAnews.gov.za

South Africa remains committed to ozone protection and climate action

Location: News

South Africa remains committed to ozone protection and climate action

By Bernice Swarts

South Africa recently participated in the 36th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 36) in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Montreal Protocol, established in 1987, is a landmark global treaty aimed at protecting the ozone layer by phasing out ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Despite the Protocol’s successes, some ODS replacements, specifically hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), have emerged as potent greenhouse gases, some over a thousand times more powerful than carbon dioxide in driving climate change.

At MOP 36, South Africa reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating ozone-depleting substances. Central to our approach is our belief in the Montreal Protocol as a highly effective framework for reducing ODS while offering significant co-benefits for global climate health. We celebrated the recent decision to allocate $1 billion to the Multilateral Fund to help developing nations meet their Protocol obligations, showcasing the international community’s dedication to this critical cause.

As one of Africa’s most industrialised nations, South Africa recognizes its role as a leader in climate action. Our national action plan emphasizes transitioning the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) sector towards greener refrigerants and energy-efficient systems. This shift is directly aligned with global climate goals, creating jobs and enhancing sustainability within South Africa’s industrial landscape. By managing refrigerants effectively, we can contribute to reducing global warming by 0.5°C, proving that industry-specific actions can have impactful climate outcomes.

South Africa is also committed to the full life-cycle management of refrigerants, ensuring that substances are properly controlled, recovered, recycled, or reclaimed.

During MOP 36, we showcased South Africa’s commitment to sustainable practices by training hundreds of technicians, particularly young people, in energy-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies. Our government – through the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) – and various stakeholders aim to train1 600 more young people in energy-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies in the near future. This investment in local capacity reflects our dedication to minimising environmental impact over the long term.

South Africa also used its participation at the MOP 36 to raise an issue of continental significance: the lack of sufficient monitoring facilities across Africa. Our country operates three monitoring stations through its Weather Services, but there is an urgent need for additional resources to expand this capability. We called for financial assistance to establish more state-of-the-art monitoring stations across Africa, enhancing the global repository of scientific data for tracking and managing emissions. This call for support underscores Africa’s crucial role in contributing to a global climate response.

South Africa has also made significant progress in phasing out methyl bromide, a highly ozone-depleting substance, showcasing our commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.

Another critical issue addressed at MOP 36 was the healthcare sector’s reliance on ozone-depleting substances, particularly in metered-dose inhalers. We urged a shift to greener alternatives, emphasizing the dual importance of public health and environmental protection.

South Africa’s experience also demonstrates the value of strict regulatory enforcement to prevent illegal trade in controlled substances and low-efficiency products. By investing in customs training to detect illegal trade, South Africa is addressing an often-overlooked aspect of environmental governance: the importance of preventing leakage through illicit imports and exports that could undermine international agreements. Our proposal included a two-pronged approach—strict regulations and penalties for non-compliance—aimed at helping all nations meet their environmental goals.

During my remarks at MOP 36, I called for the ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, urging all nations to take action against climate-warming HFCs. This appeal highlights the interconnected nature of environmental challenges and the importance of collective global action. The Montreal Protocol stands as a model for effective international cooperation, and South Africa’s call for universal ratification underscores our commitment to preserving and extending its benefits.

I do want to stress that South Africa’s presence at MOP 36 was a powerful reminder of the urgency of climate action. Through robust national initiatives and a vision for global cooperation, we called on the world to strengthen efforts in environmental protection, ozone layer preservation, and climate change mitigation for future generations. Our actions and commitments reflect a roadmap for immediate impact and a testament to the resilience needed to secure a sustainable future for all and for future generations.

G20 community outreach empowers Ehlanzeni community

G20 community outreach empowers Ehlanzeni community

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has urged the community of Welverdiend in Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, to engage with G20 initiatives aimed at creating jobs, improving healthcare and fighting poverty.

The Minister, joined by Acting Mpumalanga Premier Sasekani Manzini, officials and ambassadors, led a G20 community outreach at Mahlale High School in Acornhoek, Ehlanzeni, on Saturday.

Representatives of foreign diplomatic missions accredited to South Africa (ambassadors) also participated in the activities by handing over IT equipment to the school.

Lamola used the occasion to popularise South Africa’s foreign policy objectives and how these relate to the achievement of domestic priorities.

South Africa is set to assume the presidency of the G20 on 1 December 2024. The presidency offers the opportunity to highlight domestic issues on a global stage, including unemployment, inequality, access to finance, climate change, tourism and artificial intelligence.

“We will be assuming a huge responsibility of... the presidency of the G20 on the 1st of December. This platform gives us an opportunity, as a country, to put our issues on the global stage [including the] issues that are affecting you here as the community of Bushbuckridge in the district of Ehlanzeni in Mpumalanga and South Africa as a whole.

“Issues of unemployment, inequality, access to finance, climate change, tourism, artificial intelligence, and other day-to-day issues will now [be under the] spotlight,” Lamola said.

The Minister said the province is well placed to make a number of inputs into debates and discussions that will ensue during South Africa's presidency of the G20.

“You are also better placed [with regards to] tourism. As the Acting Premier said, you are adjacent to... the Kruger National Park, Sudwala Caves, Echo Caves, God’s window and many other areas of tourism. These are also spaces for your contribution as a province and as the people of South Africa.

“So, this platform [the G20] is in such a way that everyone is able to make a contribution and ourselves as International Relations, we will create that bridge that will enable you to make this contribution,” the Minister said.

International relations

Lamola highlighted the role of his department in addressing global conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Gaza through dialogue.

He explained that the country is actively involved in international relations, with its military in the DRC to facilitate peace and stability, and is committed to contributing to the cessation of conflict in the Middle East.

“We continue to monitor and play a role in the DRC. Our Defence Force is in the DRC. They are not there to fight in the war, but they are there to stabilise the environment so that peaceful negotiations can happen to resolve the conflict in the eastern part of the DRC.

“That is our role as International Relations and as South Africa, which we continue to play in the world, and we continue to play a role [in] the cessation of fire in the Gaza in the Middle East,” the Minister said.

The engagement with the Ehlanzeni community comes shortly after President Cyril Ramaphosa's successful participation in the G20 Summit in Brazil from 18 - 19 November 2024. – SAnews.gov.za

SA’s MSME celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts

SA’s MSME celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts

In a room alive with entrepreneurial energy and determination, South Africa's Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts at the Presidential MSMEs and Cooperatives Awards.

Hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, the awards aim to spotlight and reward South Africa’s top-performing MSMEs, cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers driving growth and transformation.

The Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, led the event at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the keynote address.

The ceremony honoured businesses that embody innovation, commitment to local development, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to business icons Dr. Mike Nkuna, the founder and Executive Chairman of the Masingita Group of Companies, and Dr. Gloria Serobe, the co-founder of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold) and Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology.

Arion Power, a start-up founded by three young entrepreneurs, Brian Gadisi, Alan Gie, and Themba Hadebe, emerged as a major winner.

Their product, WiBox, a mini-UPS that powers routers during outages, has earned them two prestigious awards -- Youth-led MSME of the Year and MSME of the Year.

Speaking to SAnews, Gadisi expressed pride in their achievement.

“This award reassures the hard work we've put into research and development, the sleepless nights, and our efforts to crack technology often dominated by the East and West. It shows that Africa has the capability to innovate on par with global leaders,” he said.

Another standout was Kedibone Segole, the 30-year-old founder of Moipone Aesthetics, a black-owned township start-up based in Mabopane, Pretoria. Her company, which manufactures high-quality natural personal care products, won the Township MSME of the Year award and a cash prize of R200 000.

Speaking to SAnews, Segole encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to start small and stay persistent.

“What I would like to say to young and upcoming entrepreneurs, along with unemployed graduates and youth, start something, work on it and believe in it. Push. Your breakthrough will come. Whatever you have, the little you have, use it. It can make you reach boundaries that you have never even imagined.

Segole said winning the award means that they are recognised, acknowledged and important.

“The President acknowledges our efforts, and he believes in the strides that we are making in an effort to come out of poverty, unemployment and the social ills we are affected by in the townships. It's in our hands. Vuk' uzenzele (get up and do it for yourself)!” she said.

Segole revealed her business journey began with just R600 from a UIF payout after losing her job in 2016. With support from stakeholders like the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and Innovation Hub, her perseverance has transformed her business into a success story.

“I was fortunate enough that along the way there has been government assistance from the NYDA, as well and the Innovation Hub, among other stakeholders. As a started, I used the little that I had and look where it has gotten me today,” she said.

Another inspiring recipient was Dimakatso Kanyane, the 32-year-old founder of Dillets Sanitary Towels. Her innovative product, designed for African women, won the Start-up Business of the Year Award.

Motivated by her own experience with her cycle, Kanyane developed a product that addresses a critical need.

Kanyane told SAnews that the award was a full circle moment for her.

“This award affirms a lot of things, that no matter how hard the journey is, with authenticity and perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle. To those who are aspiring to be on this journey -- stay ambitious, trust and believe that perseverance will lead you to the fulfilment of your dreams.

“I used to have heavy flows and severe period pains and there wasn’t a sanitary towel that catered to my specific needs. It was this search that eventually led me to the development of Dillets Sanitary Towels, a sanitary towel designed for African women by an African woman,” she said.

President Ramaphosa calls on financial institutions to make money available for businesses

Location: News

President Ramaphosa calls on financial institutions to make money available for businesses

President Cyril Ramaphosa has used his address at the Presidential Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperatives Awards to call on banks to make money available for businesses.

Speaking at the awards held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Gauteng on Friday, the President emphasised that with interest rates declining, this is an opportune time to make funding more accessible to drive economic growth.

“As interest rates are coming down and are bound to come down even further, this is the time to make finance available within obviously the various consideration that you have to take into account.

“This is the time to make finance available and pump energy and life into our economy because when small and medium enterprises are given enabling energy by our financial institutions... they will be able to run businesses to be creative, to create jobs and our economy can grow.

“I call on the banks and financial institutes to make money available so that our businesses can grow,” the President said.

Hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, the Presidential Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Cooperatives Awards are aimed at highlighting and rewarding the achievements of South Africa’s top-performing MSMEs, cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers who drive growth and transformation across the nation.

The ceremony honoured businesses that embody innovation, commitment to local development and entrepreneurial spirit.

The President also took a moment to address the recent spate of foodborne illnesses that have been linked to spaza shops and informal traders in townships. He said this has thrown into sharp focus the issues of regulation, health and safety.

At the same time, he said the issue has highlighted the critical role small businesses play in communities, providing much-needed services and supporting local economies.

“That is why it is so important to bring small businesses into the mainstream of the economy, and that we provide the necessary support for them to do this.

“International experience shows that MSMEs are drivers of sustainable growth. Countries with more MSMEs tend to have lower levels of inequality. Entrepreneurs are the drivers of innovation,” he said.

However, the President acknowledged that rates of entrepreneurship in South Africa are low by continental standards.

He told entrepreneurs and delegates at the awards that it is essential that they encourage entrepreneurship.

“It is vital that we enable the emergence and growth of MSMEs and cooperatives. We must focus on targeted interventions to address financial exclusion and onerous regulatory requirements.

“We must provide access to funding, capacity building and other support. The success of the finalists here this evening shows that with the right support, small businesses can succeed, expand and be sustainable,” the President said.

The President said that the Government of National unity has made inclusive growth and job creation its apex priority, and supporting small enterprises is an integral part of these efforts.

President Ramaphosa said the National Planning Commission estimates that the country needs 5.8 million MSMEs to meet job creation targets.

The President said that this means there is a need to double the number of MSMEs in the country.

“We are encouraged by the efforts underway to capacitate the sector. One of these is the merging of SEFA [Small Enterprise Finance Agency], SEDA [Small Enterprise Development Agency] and the Cooperatives Bank Development Agency into the newly-formed Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency.

“Of the R730 million disbursed by the new agency to date, R101 million has gone to township enterprises and R261 million to rural enterprises,” he said.

The Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency has also provided non-financial business support to more than 15 000 township and rural enterprises.

The President said that legislation is in the pipeline to streamline business licensing.

An e-registration system that integrates the work of the South African Revenue Service and the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is under development.

“If we are to fully unlock entrepreneurial potential, there must be a razor-sharp focus on start-up growth, especially in the burgeoning tech sector. We must ensure that we are not left behind in the global transition to knowledge and innovation-based economies.

“As part of this, we must scale up the adoption of advances like mobile payments and digitised record-keeping by small businesses,” he said.

President Ramaphosa said he was encouraged by the work of the Department of Small Business Development and the Department of Science and Innovation around a national start-up policy.

Among other things, this policy will deal with issues such as intellectual property registration and foreign exchange controls.

“Even as this is all work in progress, we recognise the urgency with which we must scale up support for small businesses in South Africa. They are the driving force of our economy.

“The finalists and recipients of this year’s awards are a shining example of what can be achieved. Allow me to congratulate all the winners and runners-up. You have done well. You are a fine example to other South Africans who want to follow their entrepreneurial dreams,” the President said.

The President also took a moment to thank the organisers of the awards, the generous sponsors and the millions of entrepreneurs who make the country work and the economy grow.

“These are the micro, small and medium enterprises and cooperatives that create livelihoods and jobs. They provide communities with vital services. They create value that goes far beyond turnover or profit.

“They contribute in a million different ways to building a more equal, more prosperous and more productive society. These awards are a celebration of all the entrepreneurs in a country. It is a token of our gratitude and admiration,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

Justice Minister welcomes ICC warrants of arrest for Israel, Hamas leaders

Justice Minister welcomes ICC warrants of arrest for Israel, Hamas leaders

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister, Thembi Simelane, has welcomed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders.

The ICC’s pretrial chamber issued the warrants on Thursday afternoon.

“This step by the ICC is a vindication of South Africa’s position, which has been canvassed extensively before the International Court of Justice. The international community can no longer ignore the glaring evidence of genocide and systemic violations of international law in Gaza.

“No individual, government official, or even a nation-state is considered to be above the rules established by international laws and conventions. The ICC’s action sends a powerful message that accountability is not optional but a cornerstone of a just and equitable global order,” Simelane said.

The department described the issuance as a “critical moment in addressing decades of impunity surrounding serious violations in Palestine”.

“[The] ICC’s findings provide compelling evidence that both Mr Netanyahu and Mr Gallant intentionally deprived the civilian population of Gaza of essential resources, including food, water, fuel, and medical supplies. Their actions, which obstructed humanitarian aid and exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, constitute serious breaches of international humanitarian law.

“South Africa, alongside other nations, has consistently called for accountability to address the atrocities committed against Palestinians.

“The Minister emphasised that South Africa’s submissions to the ICJ have strengthened the case that the Israeli state’s actions meet the definition of genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

“This advocacy reflects South Africa’s unwavering commitment to justice, human rights, and the rule of law,” the department said.

It called on the international community to speak out against the suffering of the Palestinian people.

“As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, South Africa reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and the commencement of a political process to secure a just and lasting peace in the region.

“The international community cannot turn a blind eye to the ongoing suffering of innocent civilians, including women, children, and humanitarian workers.

“South Africa will continue to advocate for justice for the people of Palestine in all international forums, ensuring that the voices of the oppressed are heard and their rights protected,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

Significant step towards justice for crimes against humanity

The South African Government has expressed its support for the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) recent warrants issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant, and Mohammed Deif of Hamas.

According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, these actions represent a significant advancement towards justice for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Palestine.

“South Africa reaffirms its commitment to international law and urges all state parties to act in accordance with their obligations in the Rome Statute.

“We call on the global community to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability for human rights violations,” the department said.

According to the ICC, the judges have confirmed that, based on the evidence presented, there are reasonable grounds to believe that crimes outlined in the Rome Statute have been committed.

The judges of the ICC have determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu and Gallant have committed the war crime of using starvation as a method of warfare.

They are also accused of crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts, acting as direct perpetrators in coordination with others.

“The chamber also found reasonable grounds to believe that they are each responsible for the war crime of intentionally directing attacks against civilians as a superior,” the ICC statement read.

Judges found reasonable grounds to believe that Hamas commander Al-Masri, also known as Deif, is responsible for crimes against humanity, including murder, extermination, torture, rape, and other forms of sexual violence.

The ICC Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, expressed deep concern about reports of escalating violence, diminishing humanitarian access, and the continued rise of allegations regarding international crimes in Gaza and the West Bank.

“We will continue to carry out our mandate to fulfill the fundamental commitment forming the basis of the Rome Statute: that the lives of all human beings have equal value,” Khan added.

The ICC investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crimes of aggression. – SAnews.gov.za

SARB announces repo rate cut

SARB announces repo rate cut

The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has - in a unanimous decision - decided to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points, bringing it down from 8% to 7.75% with effect from Friday.

This is the second consecutive repo rate cut announced by Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago following a meeting of the bank’s MPC.

“The committee agreed that reducing the level of policy restrictiveness is still consistent with achieving the inflation target,” Kganyago said.

He warned, however, that the risk outlook “requires a cautious approach”.

“Global interest rates could well shift higher again and the recent Rand depreciation demonstrates how rapidly changes in the global environment can affect South Africa.

“The forecast sees rates easing further in future, stabilising a bit above 7%. But this rate path from the Quarterly Projection Model remains a broad policy guide. The MPC would like to emphasise that its decisions will be made on a meeting-by-meeting basis, with no forward guidance and no pre-commitment to any specific rate path.

“Such decisions will continue to be outlook dependent, responsive to data developments, and sensitive to the balance of risks to the forecast,” he said.

Kganyago’s announcement comes on the heels of an announcement by Statistics South Africa that inflation had dipped to 2.8% - its lowest since June 2020.

This is also below the SARB’s inflation target range of between 3 – 6%.

In this regard, Kganyago said the SARB has assessed risks to inflation outlook as “balanced”.

“[We] anticipate inflation expectations will moderate further. These expectations have been quite backward-looking, with higher past inflation projected well into the future. Survey expectations remain above our midpoint objective.

“We expect that our policy stance, and the experience of lower inflation, will anchor expectations more firmly at lower levels.

“In the near term, inflation appears well contained. However, the medium-term outlook is highly uncertain, with material upside risks. These include higher prices for food, electricity and water, as well as insurance premiums and wage settlements,” Kganyago said. – SAnews.gov.za

De Lille highlights the power of tourism

De Lille highlights the power of tourism

The tourism sector is a dynamic economic force that contributes significantly to worldwide gross domestic product (GDP) while creating jobs and fostering human development.

“As South Africa, we are acutely aware of the transformative power of tourism and business events and we are working hard to elevate the profile of tourism and attract more business events and visitors to our beautiful and diverse country,” Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said.

The Minister was addressing the Incentives, Business Travel & Meetings (IBTM) World Trade Show 2024 in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday. Tourism was for too long, seen as a “secondary” sector, its full potential often underestimated, she said.

“We come to IBTM World this year with excitement as in a few days’ time South Africa will officially take [the] Presidency of the 2025 G20 Summit, following Brazil’s hosting of the summit this year and ahead of the United States of America who will host the summit in 2026.”

She said as the leading business events destination in Africa and the Middle East as affirmed in the latest International Congress and Conventions Association (ICCA) rankings, South Africa stand proud and ready to host the G20 Summit and showcase all our diverse offerings in business and leisure tourism.

“South Africa hosting the G20 Summit marks a significant milestone and it is important both for our country and the greater African continent.

“As the only African country in the G20, South Africa brings a unique perspective to discussions, particularly those affecting developing nations and the African continent.

“Hosting the summit allows South Africa to not only spotlight issues such as economic inequality, development, climate change, and fair-trade practices but it is also helps to once again helps to connect countries to grow tourism and highlights South Africa’s capability to host successful incident-free global big events,” she explained.

De Lille said the South African meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) industry was valued at 6.6 billion US dollars (R121.8 billion) in 2023, and it is projected to grow fourfold over the next eight years, reaching 25.9 billion US dollars (R477.9 billion) by 2032.

“I am confident that, with our dedicated efforts, we can even exceed these projections and this is why being at this crucial platform at IBTM World is important to us as we are committed to growing this sector beyond projections.

SA's hosting prowess

“South Africa has consistently demonstrated its capability to host high-profile local and international events, showcasing our expertise and commitment to excellence.

“I can confidently assure you that, as a country we are looking forward to welcoming all the visitors including world leaders, delegates, media personnel and support staff to our shores.”

She added that South Africa has a formidable track record of hosting successful major business events annually and that the country’s hosting prowess will once again be on show for the world to see.

“We are excited to be able to share our unique stories with the world’s media as we also share with them our vast tapestry of cultures, award winning cuisine, natural beauty, diverse attractions and infrastructure.

“There is no doubt that as more of the world gets to see our country through the G20 Summit lens, we are confident that they too will be interested in coming to meet in South Africa and exploring our country.

“We are therefore looking forward to hosting even more international conferences, trade shows, and business events in future because certainly if the world still did not believe it, the G20 Summit cements our country as a capable host for large-scale events.”
De Lille told delegates attending the summit that South Africa is not just a destination, it is the gateway to the future of global collaboration and unforgettable experiences.

“The G20 Summit provides South Africa many gains and we are excited to use this event to grow global visibility, showcase our infrastructure improvements, and a strengthen our brand as a tourism and business events destination,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA sets sights on industrialisation opportunities presented by decarbonisation

SA sets sights on industrialisation opportunities presented by decarbonisation

South Africa is making the most of the available opportunities to drive industrialisation through global decarbonisation efforts, says Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau.

Tau on Wednesday led a team of officials from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) to a joint briefing session of Parliament’s Portfolio Committees on Trade and Industry and Science, Technology and Innovation. The aim of the session was to engage on South Africa’s Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy and the White Paper on Electric Vehicles.

Tau told the Members of the Portfolio Committee that South Africa has committed itself to reducing greenhouse gas emission, as envisaged in the national Just Energy Transition. Above its own contributions to reduce emissions, South Africa has partnered with the rest of the world to decarbonise.

Tau said South Africa has to decarbonise its own economy but also position itself to commercially benefit from the global shift to greener technologies.

“Green hydrogen presents an opportunity to export natural resources such as sunshine and wind, which South Africa has in abundance.

“The global demand for green hydrogen presents ample industrialisation opportunities not only for South Africa but for other African countries, so we need to collaborate and integrate efforts to drive the industrialisation agenda for the continent as a whole.

“The speed with which we move will determine whether we are able to take full advantage of the transition or we are left behind,” he said.

Linked to decarbonisation efforts is the worldwide move to electric vehicles, which Tau described as advancing at a fast pace.

Through the White Paper on Electric Vehicles and support for the automotives industry, South Africa is embracing the transition and adapting its Automotive Strategy to current global trends.

The White Paper on Electric Vehicles outlines a commitment to ensuring that the transition is not just about decarbonisation but is also leveraged for growth by deepening the automotive value chain, fostering local industry growth, and aligning with economic priorities, the approach aims to be pro-growth and pro-investment.

Regarding the carbon intensity of the South African economy, Tau indicated that government is  cognisant of the fact that some of the measures, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism introduced by the European Union, do require that the country challenge them at the level of the World Trade Organisation, as they likely to have a negative impact on economic growth efforts. – SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa reflects on ’successful’ G20 Leaders' Summit

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janiero - President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the two-day G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been a success.

He noted that, despite some members holding dissenting views, a broad consensus was ultimately reached.

“The beauty of this summit is that it allowed everyone to express their views and articulate dissenting views or voices on issues. What we established at this summit is that even as a member or country dissents it will not stop the show,” the President said on Tuesday.

The news broadcaster CNN reported that despite signing the G20 final declaration on Monday, Argentine President Javier Milei told the other Heads of State that he disagreed with some aspects of the document.

Reports said President Milei opposed several issues, including the restriction of freedom of expression on social media, vulnerabilities to the sovereignty of global governance institutions, unequal treatment under the law, and the belief that increased state intervention is the solution to fighting hunger.

He also distanced himself from some text related to the 2030 Agenda.

“What we are learning is that in the end, when there is broad consensus - what we would call sufficient consensus - a declaration should be adopted,” President Ramaphosa said.

South Africa’s commander-in-chief said he would want this practice to be adopted by G20 countries.

The President addressed the media at the conclusion of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which ended yesterday.

“Yes, there’s always an opportunity to have frank discussions about geopolitical issues, some of them quite testing and touching, such as what is happening in Palestine and Gaza, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine.”

He argued that there was no avoidance of the key and thorny issues in discussions.

The President highlighted several key “takeaways” from the gathering and the achievements of the G20 Brazil Presidency. These include a focus on taxing the super-rich, reforming the governance of global institutions and financial organisations, as well as addressing climate change.

“Overall, this has been a very successful G20 Summit, and it lays a very good foundation for us as South Africa, as we now focus on having the next G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa,” he added.

Yesterday, Brazil officially handed over the historic G20 Presidency to South Africa at the closing ceremony of the annual summit.

READ I Brazil officially hands over G20 Presidency to South Africa

President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa had adopted the G20 Presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”.

“Whatever pressure we may be facing is a pressure that is exerted on us by the conditions in which people in the world find themselves, particularly in the Global South, poverty, inequality, and joblessness.

“Those are the pressures that we are under, which we’ve got to address,” he told journalists.

He said key priorities include ending hunger, addressing climate change, and focusing on digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence.

South Africa will also advocate for the African agenda and the interests of the Global South.

“We expect to have a successful summit in Johannesburg, and we’re really glad that many countries that were here are keen and willing to come and support us as we lead up to the summit in Johannesburg.”

He expressed eagerness to collaborate with United States President-elect Donald Trump as South Africa prepares for the summit and handover to the United States in 2026.

“We’re going to be working together for a solid two years, if not three. I’m hoping that diplomacy and the various protocols that exist amongst global leaders as well as countries are going to underpin the way that we work.

“I think we’ll have a good summit in South Africa, with the participation of the United States, and with President Donald Trump coming to South Africa.

“I’ve already invited him for a State Visit, and we look forward to welcoming him.” – SAnews.gov.za

Brazil officially hands over G20 Presidency to South Africa

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janeiro - Brazil has officially transferred the historic Group of 20 (G20) Presidency to South Africa at the closing ceremony of the annual summit that was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

South Africa will make history as the first African country to preside over the G20, with approximately 130 meetings planned for 2025.

The ceremonial handover was conducted by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who both struck the ceremonial gavel before exchanging handshakes and smiles.

The prominent G20 Leaders’ Summit kicked off yesterday with Heads of State and their delegates being welcomed at the Museum of Modern Art.

“It is an honour to accept, on behalf of the people of South Africa, the responsibility of the Presidency of the G20 for the next year,” the President said on Tuesday.

He took the time to congratulate the Brazilian President, a long-time friend, for a successful G20 Presidency that elevated the participation of social and civil society groups and convened the first-ever G20 Social Summit.

“South Africa firmly believes that civil society serves as a bridge between the G20 leaders and the people who have the greatest interest in their deliberations.”

The President has committed to maintaining this innovative platform for engagement throughout the country’s Presidency.

He said he believed that efforts during the Brazilian Presidency have tackled some of the world’s most urgent global challenges.

President Ramaphosa praised the increased attention on the development agenda for developing countries and said they would build on the work that has already begun.

“We applaud all G20 members, led by Brazil, in finalising the G20 Rio de Janeiro Leaders’ Declaration, which outlines the actions we must take together to build a better world.

“We appreciate that once sufficient consensus was reached on the declaration, those members who still had points of disagreement did not stand in the way of adopting the declaration.”

The Head of State said South Africa was committed to advancing the G20’s efforts to achieve greater global economic growth and sustainable development.

“We will work to ensure no one is left behind.”

Furthermore, he said South Africa would strive to harness global collective efforts to address the challenges worsened by the fragility of global solidarity, crippling underdevelopment, and increasing inequality.

President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa had adopted the G20 presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”.

“In line with this theme, we will seek to strengthen and advance our common pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Pact for the Future.”

He emphasised that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 should be a priority for the next five G20 Presidencies.

“Through our G20 Presidency, we will seek to strengthen solidarity. Whether it is in Gaza, Sudan, or Ukraine, we must all stand in solidarity with those people who are facing hardship and suffering.”

He expressed his support for nations who are most vulnerable to pandemics and other global public health crises, highlighting that many countries in Africa are currently facing mpox outbreaks that require urgent international action.

He stressed that through the country’s G20 Presidency, they will address inequality, a major threat to global economic growth and stability.

“The disparities in wealth and development within and between countries are unjust and unsustainable. These disparities show themselves in the lack of predictable and sustainable financing and capacity building for climate action.”

He said they were using the moment to firmly place the development priorities of the African continent and the Global South on the G20 agenda.

The focus areas include inclusive economic growth, industrialisation, employment, inequality and food security.

“South Africa looks forward to working with all G20 members and invited guests and I am honoured to welcome you all to South Africa in the year ahead.” – SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa urges G20 leaders to speak up on Gaza conflict

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janeiro - President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the Group of 20 (G20) leaders to speak up against the violence in Gaza and work towards achieving a solution for both Palestinians and Israelis.

“As the G20 collective, we need to add our voices to ensure that the carnage that is taking place in Gaza is ended and that we work towards a just and lasting peace for both Palestinians and Israelis,” the President said on Monday.

He reminded the leaders that the Palestinians’ right to self-determination was under the burden of a brutal and violent occupation.

The President was speaking during the second session of the G20 Leaders’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He expressed satisfaction that reforming global governance institutions is a key focus during the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

“The reform of these institutions is more urgent now than ever before, and I believe that we all agree that for world governance to go forward these institutions must be reformed.”

He emphasised that the world today confronts numerous challenges that pose a threat to global peace and justice.
“They pose a danger to the very existence of this very precious planet that we share.”

This as the G20 summit got underway on Monday.

The President mentioned soaring global temperatures, increasing inequality among nations and people, and growing geopolitical tensions in regions such as Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan as some of the challenges the world is facing.

President Ramaphosa stressed the need for stronger multilateralism and a renewed commitment to the goals and principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter.

The Head of State has called for respect for the UN Charter, urging all Member States to comply with its principles and international law.

“There can be no exceptions, and no country is immune from these obligations. We are all bound by the same rules. There is a need to both strengthen and reform multilateral mechanisms and institutions to address the challenges that the world faces.”

The President believes that these institutions need to be inclusive and representative.

“Just as we call for the UN and UN Security Council to be inclusive and not leave others out. They must be able to respond to the needs of all persons and under all situations.”

Multilateralism and modernisation

He told the G20 leaders that the UN must remain the heart of multilateralism.

“The UN must lead the way in advancing peace and security, tackling poverty and under-development, and protecting human rights.

“And it must be capable of combating the use of hunger as a weapon of war, as we are now seeing in some parts of the world, including in Gaza and Sudan.”

To fulfil this mandate, President Ramaphosa emphasised the need to modernise the UN.

“It must be more effective, agile, action-oriented and forward-looking. The global financial system must be fit for purpose,” he explained, adding that more ambitious targets should be set for grants and concessional financing.

This includes the special drawing rights that must be available for developing countries, particularly in Africa.

In addition, he said multilateral coordination on debt must be enhanced, drawing in the private sector.

He said that South Africa supports the call for the strengthening of the multilateral trading system and World Trade Organisation (WTO) reforms.

“We want to urge that the WTO must move towards reforms so that the trading system in the world is fair for all.

“These reforms must provide policy space for developing economies to achieve their development objectives and advance industrialisation.”

He also welcomed the call for the G20 to unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence and ensure its benefits are equitably shared.
“We must improve and promote international cooperation on international governance for artificial intelligence.”

In addition, he announced that South Africa supports an open, free, secure and people-oriented digital future.

“I wish to reiterate that South Africa fully supports the Brazilian Call to Action on Global Governance Reform made in New York two months ago.

“When we as South Africa take over the G20 Presidency on the 1st of December, we will take up this effort to strengthen and reform the multilateral system to effectively respond to global realities – and to ensure that no country is left behind and no one is left behind.” – SAnews.gov.za

Lamola urges global citizens to hold G20 leaders accountable

Lamola urges global citizens to hold G20 leaders accountable

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janeiro- International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says global citizens must hold the leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) accountable.

This comes after various declarations and commitments were made during the summit that opened on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The first day of the G20 Leaders’ Summit came to an end on Monday, with important results for the future of the planet and crucial commitments such as the fight against hunger, sustainable development and the taxation of billionaires.

“Each of them was speaking and committing. I think the people of the world will have to make the leaders accountable for their commitments that are being made at the G20.

“They will be a platform next year in South Africa to take stock of the commitments of how far the world has progressed,” he told the South African media.

In their G20 declaration, the leaders said they remain resolute in their dedication to fighting hunger, poverty, and inequality, promoting sustainable development in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and reforming global governance.

They also acknowledged that what was needed was a political will to create conditions to expand access to food and welcomed the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty under Brazil’s G20 Presidency.

Meanwhile, the document referred to the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza and the escalation in Lebanon,” and highlighted the urgent need to expand humanitarian assistance and reinforce the protection of civilians.

They also touched on the war in Ukraine, stressing the human suffering and the negative impact it has on global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation and growth.

The leaders also committed to scaling up urgent action to address challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification, ocean and land degradation, drought and pollution.

This prominent gathering of world leaders pledged to work for a reinvigorated and strengthened multilateral system, rooted in the United Nations Charter and International Law, with renewed institutions and reformed governance that is more representative and reflect the realities of the 21st century.

Lamola strongly believes the commitments made will be fulfilled.

“As you’re aware, we continue to look for the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change and the people of the world must do the same and we’ll ensure that there’s implementation on what is committed.”

South Africa’s G20

Brazil will hand over the reins this afternoon as South Africa is set to assume the Chair of the G20 from Brazil on 1 December with the preparations to host the summit next year currently underway.

South Africa’s G20 Presidency will focus on solidarity, equality, and sustainability.

He told the media that the country will also have a sharp focus on artificial intelligence (AI), including innovation for Africa.

The Minister described AI and innovation as crosscutting in various sectors and believed they could help “leapfrog” the African continent to par with developed countries.

In addition, he said the country’s G20 Presidency will also zoom into the Pact of the Future which was adopted by the world leaders at the Summit of the Future in September this year.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted this pact that aims to make the organisation more relevant and effective on the global stage in the 21st century.

“Indeed, the agenda is loaded but we believe from the declaration read here in Brazil will be able to build a consensus and also shine the spotlight on the number of issues for the Global South and African continent and the marginalised people of the world,” Lamola said.

Meanwhile, the Minister said the value of hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit far surpasses any amount injection into the gross domestic product (GDP) and spoke about the boom in tourism.

“You can see that the City of Rio is alive, and it has been like this for the whole year of Rio hosting several Ministerial Meetings, working groups, task teams and task forces. People were flocking to Brazil, and it has shone a spotlight on the issues of the world and the economy.”

Lamola is also of the view that the money that will be injected into the country hosting the summit will be a worthy investment. – SAnews.gov.za

Africa calls for funding of just transition

Location: News

Africa calls for funding of just transition

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has called for urgent action to reduce the cost of capital to fund pathways towards a just transition.

Addressing the second annual High-level Ministerial Roundtable on the Just Transition at the Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Minister said the high cost of capital in Africa is inhibiting the continent’s ability to access the transition's socio-economic opportunities.

“In 2021, the average cost of capital for energy projects was about seven times higher in Africa than in Europe and North America. Reducing the cost requires coordinated efforts from governments, financial institutions and businesses to remove frictions, which add costs.

“The current global financial system is not designed to respond appropriately and developing economy countries cannot access the scale and quality of finance required to support their Just Transition Pathways and meet their Nationally Determined Commitments.

“As developing economy countries, we have shared realities that constrain our abilities to transition. We face a lack of means of implementation, limited fiscal space, high costs of capital, debt burdens, limited access to technologies and other factors. Critical within this is the lack of access to the transition's economic opportunities,” George said.

He said South Africa stands at the beginning of its transition journey, with much work ahead in shaping and implementing the necessary policies and actions.

“At the heart of all our climate actions is a steadfast commitment to ensuring a just and equitable transition, one that empowers our workers, communities, and all of society to define and drive the journey toward low-emissions and climate-resilient development.

“Our National Framework on Just Transition is designed to embed fairness and equity into our mitigation and adaptation strategies. This is reflected in the formulation of our new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) trajectory range, which aligns with the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal while ensuring that equity and fairness remain at the forefront,” the Minister said.

George said for South Africa, transition pathways must create sustainable jobs, enhance livelihoods, and generate opportunities for localised industrialisation, moving towards a genuine transformative process that supports an inclusive and competitive economy.

“In our collective commitment to achieve low carbon and climate resilient development, international cooperation and unlocking access to transition opportunities remains at the core,” George said.
