Cash-in-transit suspects sentenced to life in prison

The Eastern Cape Hawks Head, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, has commended the collaborative efforts of the investigation team and the National Prosecuting Authority in securing life sentences and 216 years for Lwando Ntiayantia (36) and Nkosekhaya Lloyd (38).

The two were arrested for robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The Makhanda High Court sentenced Ntiyantiya and Lloyd on 19 February 2024 for charges including four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, three counts of attempted murder, three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Their arrest by the Centane Crime Prevention Unit on 25 March 2022 followed a robbery of a G4S armoured vehicle.

The East London-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks conducted an extensive probe linking the accused to multiple cash-in-transit armed robberies.

The arrests stem from an incident on 25 March 2022 when a G4S vehicle was robbed at gunpoint in Centane. Despite a shootout, the police managed to apprehend the suspects and that resulted in the unfortunate death of an innocent bystander used as a shield by the perpetrators.

Following various court appearance, both Ntiyantiya and Lloyd were sentenced on 19 February 2024 in the Makhanda High Court.

The breakdown of their sentences includes significant prison terms for counts related to robbery, murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of ammunition. Concurrent sentences were also imposed for certain charges. – SAnews.gov.za

SANRAL notifies motorists about blasting along the N2

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has advised road users that the N2 will be intermittently closed between Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) and the Fish River Pass due to blasting operations taking place this month.

Blasting operations started on Monday and will end on 26 February 2024.

Motorists are notified of the following dates:

  • Thursday,15 February 2024
  • Monday,19 February 2024
  • Thursday, 22 February 2024, and
  • Monday, 26 February 2024.

“Motorists travelling westwards between East London or Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) and Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) may consider using the following alternative route:

  • From East London, follow the R72 to Port Alfred and Kenton-on-Sea through to Nanaga and turn left onto the N2 and continue on to Gqeberha.

Motorists travelling eastwards between Gqeberha and Qonce or East London may consider using the following alternative route:

  • From Gqeberha, follow the N2 to Nanaga and turn right onto the R72 at the junction at Nanaga and travel on via Alexandria and Port Alfred to East London.
  • From East London, turn left onto the N2 and travel westwards through to Qonce.

“Motorists are requested to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes and use caution when making use of the roads,” SANRAL’s Southern Region Manager Mbulelo Peterson said. –SAnews.gov.za
