Springboks to embark on a four-day trophy tour

South Africans will get an opportunity see the 2023 Rugby World Cup trophy when the Springboks rugby team tour the country this week.

The world champions will embark on a four-day Trophy Tour to major regional population centres from Thursday. The team arrives back in South Africa on Tuesday (10:55am) at OR Tambo International Airport and will commence the tour 48 hours later.

This as the national side triumphed over New Zealand in the final match of the tournament, beating New Zealand 12-11 on Saturday to lift the Webb Ellis trophy.

The tour will start in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Soweto – concluding at FNB Stadium – on Thursday, 2 November. It will then continue in Cape Town (Friday, 3 November) and Durban (Saturday, 4 November) before concluding in the Eastern Cape (East London) on Sunday, 5 November.

“The locations have been selected for population size in the first three instances and because of the Eastern Cape’s rugby significance in the fourth. Satellite tours to Bloemfontein, Nelson Mandela Bay and other centres will be scheduled for 2024. Such tours following the 2019 victory had to be abandoned because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The route for each tour has been prepared in consultation with the respective local authorities and the South African Police Service,” SA Rugby said on Sunday.

Route maps and timings will be published at www.springboks.rugby, on SA Rugby’s social media channels and by local authorities in due course. –SAnews.gov.za

South Africa calls for International World to hold Israel Accountable for breaches of International Law

Save the Children has reported that the number of children killed in Gaza over the last three weeks has surpassed the annual number of children killed across all the world's conflict zones since 2019. Since 07 October, more than 3 257 children are reported to have been killed. This includes at least 3 195 in Gaza, 33 in the West Bank and 29 in Israel. Children make up more than 40% of the 7 703 people killed in Gaza. Save the Children estimates that these numbers are likely to go up given that over 1000 children are missing with many trapped under the ruins and rubble as a result of Israel's indiscriminate airstrikes on Gaza.

All of these children killed since 7 October are non-combatants and those responsible for their deaths must be held accountable for war crimes, crimes against humanity and in the case of the scale of deaths in Gaza and increasingly in the West Bank, the crime of genocide must also be investigated. The scale of deaths in Gaza are a direct result of the unlawful actions by Israel on the peoples of Gaza. As South Africa and the majority of countries stated at the United Nations General Assembly on 27 October 2023, as part of the debate on a resolution where more than two-thirds of the General Assembly responded positively to a call for an immediate ceasefire, under the laws of occupation, which forms part of the law of armed conflict, Israel does not have the ‘right to defend itself' using military means as Israel is an occupying power. This is a fact, not an allegation. It has been confirmed by the International Court of Justice. As the occupying power, Israel can use tools applicable to the rule of law, including policing powers to deal with criminal actions. An occupying state cannot exercise control over territory it occupies and simultaneously militarily attack that territory on the claim that it is “foreign” and poses an exogenous national security threat. The notion of Israel's right to defend itself through military means has been used erroneously by some, and deliberately by others to justify the unlawful use of force by Israel on people of Palestine in Gaza and the West Bank.

Those that have encouraged and materially supported the unlawful use of force by Israel in the current situation should therefore be investigated for aiding and abetting the breaches of international law. The numbers of non-combatants killed, especially the numbers of children killed, requires that the world to show that it is serious about global accountability. The ICC has charged Russian President Vladimir Putin with unlawfully taking children out of Ukraine to Russia. Consequently, the wilful killing of children in Gaza surely requires the ICC prosecutor to use his independent powers to initiate prosecutions urgently. Failure to do so will serve to exacerbate the growing cynicism that international criminal law is applied selectively for political purposes.

While we cite numbers, which some world leaders shamefully sought to minimise, as a means to illustrate the scale of the atrocities, this should not mask the very real human tragedy. Entire generations of families have been wiped out in Gaza over the last three weeks. It is estimated that over 80 entire families have been wiped out by Israeli armed action over the last three weeks. On Sunday 29 October, members of the family of one of a senior Palestinian diplomat based in Pretoria were killed in an Israeli air strike in their apartment building in Gaza. Another member of the Palestinian community living in Johannesburg had 25 members of their family killed in an Israeli air strike this morning. South Africa extends its deepest condolences to the families of all victims.

It is in the light of these atrocities that the unethical way the Deputy head of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, Mr Zev Krengel's, commentary on South Africa's stance on this matter should be condemned. Mr Krengel has repeated discredited information related to the beheading of children in Israel. This disinformation is part of the arsenal of dehumanisation tactics used to justify a ‘by any means necessary' approach to dealing with Hamas, which has resulted in the huge casualties we see today. He also misled the South African public about the nature and process of Minister Naledi Pandor's call from Hamas and of her official visit as an envoy to Iran. Given the potential libellous nature of his utterances, more commentary on this will be done at a later stage. It is important to raise it as Krengel and the organisation on whose behalf he represented these views are out of step with the views of most South Africans and people across the world. This includes scores of Jewish people in South Africa and across the world who have called out the actions of Hamas and the Government of Israel. Millions of people, many under the banners of Jewish Voice for Peace, have marched in New York, London, Turkey and other cities over the last few days. They have all called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and called for investigations into the breaches of international crimes.

One of these crimes, the crime of genocide, sadly looms large. President Lula da Silva of Brazil has called the attacks on Gaza a genocide. Minister Pandor too, reminded the international community not to stand idle while another genocide is unfolding. At the United Nations Security Council debate in New York last week, she stated the following: “We all recall that in 1994 a genocide occurred on the African continent with much of the whole world watching as innocent people were massacred. History cannot keep repeating such cruelty, we should establish a system of global governance that is fair, equitable, and has the capacity to respond to the needs of all persons in situations of threat and harm – a system that is not just a tool for the most powerful countries of the world but that provides protection for the most vulnerable”.

South Africa echoes the United Nations General Assembly's resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate opening of a humanitarian corridor to provide food, medical supplies and fuel. South Africa also calls on the United Nations to deploy a rapid protection force to protect the civilian population from further bombardment.

All countries genuinely committed to a rules-based system underpinned by international law must act immediately.

On Monday, 30 October 2023, the Western Cape Government signed a Letter of Intent with Hisense South Africa for the establishment of a Tevolution Museum in Cape Town.

This venture stems from the agreement with the Shandong province, which is now in its 25th year. The Director-General for the Department of the Premier, Harry Malila, opened today's engagement by thanking China and the Shandong province for the continued relationship and emphasized the renewed focus on the economy, tourism and growth going forward. Hisense already has a footprint in the Atlantis area and will now build on this partnership through the establishment of this museum, working closely with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), which is responsible for museums in the province.

The envisioned museum will tell the story of household appliances in South Africa but will also aim at providing opportunities for youth to go into the field of technology. The museum will incorporate an art studio which will provide opportunities for youth to grow their skills in technology, animation and other related fields such as coding. It will also use technology to bring innovative exhibitions to visitors for them to experience Cape Town's rich and diverse cultural heritage. DCAS will identify potential sites where the museum will be hosted.

Head of Department for Cultural Affairs and Sport, Guy Redman, emphasized the important role that museums play in bringing hope to people. “The museum we are creating is a museum of the future. We want to inspire South Africans to imagine alternate futures for themselves and believe in their abilities to create that desired future. We want them to appreciate what could be, and give them the tools to make it happen.” he said.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, thanked the delegation for the ongoing partnership between the two governments: “It is very important that we have this ongoing relationship and that we continue to strengthen it as it continues to bring new economic opportunities to our youth. We are also looking forward to hosting young people from Shandong later this year for sailing events.” she said.

The Western Cape Government looks forward to this exciting new project, which will not only bring in economic growth through tourism but will also support young people in pursuing new career opportunities.

Revolutionizing Ride-Hailing: inDrive Conquers 20 African Cities in 2023 with Groundbreaking Zero Commission Model

Location: News
inDrive

In a transformative breakthrough poised to reshape the ride-hailing sector and the gig economy across Africa, inDrive (www.inDrive.com) has made a bold advancement. The company has rapidly expanded its services to 20 African cities in less than 12 months throughout 2023, all while not charging any commission fees to its drivers.

inDrive has successfully established its presence across a variety of cities in Nigeria, including Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Benin City, Nnewi, Aba, Onitsha, Jos, Enugu, Warri, Abeokuta, Akure, Owerri, Calabar, Ado Ekiti, and Uyo, as well as Maseru in Lesotho, and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. In addition to these cities, the platform is also operational in several African countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Ghana, and Namibia. What sets inDrive apart from many other platforms is its commitment to fairness and empowerment within the transportation sector, ensuring that drivers retain a significant portion of their earnings. This noble strategy highlights the company's unwavering dedication to uplifting both the drivers and passengers across the continent

This expansion is a key part of inDrive's strategic plan to establish a strong and equitable presence in new markets. A distinctive feature of this strategy allows drivers to benefit significantly: they pay zero commissions for an extended period to allow enough time to build a community of customers. This policy ensures that a greater portion of earnings goes directly to the drivers, showcasing inDrive's dedication to fostering a balanced and fair marketplace.

“Our launch strategy is meticulously crafted to guarantee fair treatment for both drivers and passengers,” stated Ilia Anisimov the Regional Business Development Specialist (Expansion)at inDrive. “We are committed to creating a win-win scenario, ensuring passengers have access to affordable rides while drivers receive their rightful share of the income.”

The expansion is rolling out in a series of thoughtful and active stages, each aimed at establishing a just and sustainable ecosystem for all stakeholders. The first stage encompasses extensive market research, conducted by inDrive's team of specialists, to ensure that our entry into each new market is well-informed and tailored to local needs.

Following this, the focus shifts to building a robust user community. The final stage is monetization, which involves charging a modest commission of no more than 10% on drivers' earnings, starting only six months post-launch in each city.

Africa faces numerous challenges, particularly in providing ample employment opportunities. inDrive's venture into the continent represents a strategic move to address these issues, offering drivers not just a platform to earn but also the necessary tools and support to prosper.

With its innovative approach and unwavering dedication to fairness, inDrive is set to revolutionize the transportation landscape in Africa. The company is empowering drivers, delighting passengers, and contributing significantly to the vibrant tapestry of the gig economy.

Springboks win is a symbol of SA’s journey to nationhood

Springboks win is a symbol of SA’s journey to nationhood

The Springboks’ nail biting victory over New Zealand carries far greater meaning and symbolism for South Africans than just a sporting achievement.

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa through his weekly newsletter on Monday.

The President described the win as historic at the Stade de France over the weekend and a reflection of South Africa’s own democratic journey.

“When South Africa first competed in the Rugby World Cup in 1995, our democracy was just a year old. Back then, there was just one black player on the team, the legendary Chester Williams. Of the squad that played in the past weekend’s final, just short of half were black players, including the team captain, Siya Kolisi.

“The journey of the Springboks to the historic victory in the 2023 Rugby World Cup is as much about our journey towards nationhood as it is about sporting excellence. It is as much about our quest to ensure that representation in all facets of public life, including sport, stands as a potent symbol of the cherished values upon which this country was founded,” he said.

President Ramaphosa said the fervent support for the ’Boks coming from all races and cultures shows that the team – whose history has been closely linked with the brutal Apartheid government – is embraced by South Africans everywhere.

“The fervent, colourful and touching displays of national pride from South Africans both at home and abroad during this tournament, show that perhaps as never before, the Springboks have well and truly been embraced by all races as their own.

“The viral clip of Springboks winger Makazole Mapimpi being cheered on by customers and store staff whilst out grocery shopping, and that of Eben ‘Elizabedi’ Etzebeth and RG Snyman dancing with South African fans near the Eiffel Tower in Paris are among my personal favourites.

“Witnessing so many South Africans don the national team’s colours and profess their support online and on other platforms speaks to the deep love for our country and to our ability to pull together even when the going gets tough,” he said.

The President reflected that South Africa’s “nationhood” has grown despite obstacles and uncertainty.

“At times such as this, when our country faces many problems that at times cause our spirits to flag, we are reminded that our South Africanness, our sense of community and belonging, and our very nationhood did not evolve overnight.

“It has taken considerable time to forge, and at times faced obstacles that threw us into uncertainty and doubt. But if the story of the transformation of South African rugby, a sport that was once the bastion of racial supremacy, is anything to go by - our country will continue to reap the benefits of change if we remain united and if we stay the course,” the President said.

He acknowledged that the country faces problems that “cannot be forgotten or wished away by a fleeting moment such as a sporting victory” but highlighted that the victory has united the country.

“It is our hope that it must also serve to inspire the younger generation to derive important life lessons about perseverance, teamwork, discipline and leadership. The interview that Siya Kolisi gave shortly after the team’s win on Saturday will be remembered as one of the most poignant and meaningful from a sports person in our country.

“He spoke about the different backgrounds of the team members and the difficulties they have had to overcome to reach this pinnacle of sporting achievement. You have to be South African to see, feel and experience the things we do,” he said.

“This Springbok squad is one of the best rugby teams in the history of the sport. But they are far more than that. They are also great ambassadors for our country and for the values that continue to drive our efforts to build a united, more equal and prosperous nation,” the President concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Parliament heaps praise on the Springboks

Parliament has sent a congratulatory message to the Springboks for their record setting win against New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup final.

The ’Boks triumphed over the All Blacks by one point in the final held at the Stade de France on Saturday evening.

The team has now won four world cups in a historic achievement.

“Clinching the Webb Ellis trophy for an unmatched fourth time, the Springboks have not only displayed supreme athleticism but also the spirit of unity, impeccable team-work and perseverance that defines our nation,” Parliament said in a statement.

The Springboks’ hard fought journey to the final – and eventually clinching the Webb Ellis trophy – included tough matches against five of the top 10 teams in the world.

“In this high-stakes competition, our team demonstrated exceptional resilience, unwavering spirit, and an unparalleled warrior mentality. Against all odds, they proved to be the epitome of excellence, discipline, determination, teamwork and a passion.

In its statement on Sunday, Parliament said the achievement exemplifies the transformative power of sport in South Africa.

“It's not just about the game; it's about its ability to unite our diverse nation, reinvigorate hope, and showcasing the strength that comes from our rich diversity. The Springboks' victory embodies the spirit of South Africa: a nation defined by resilience, unity, and a passion for pushing boundaries,” the statement read.

Parliament described the victory as a testament to the “strength of our people” which evokes memories from Springboks’ first world cup trophy lift in 1995.

“Fast forward 28 years, and the indomitable spirit of the Springboks remains as resilient and unmatched as ever. From the powerful cry of 'One Team, One Country' in 1995 to the equally resonant 'Stronger Together' today, their legacy is a testament to the strength of our people, the catalytic force of sport and the undying spirit of a nation that has weathered countless storms but remains steadfast in its pursuit of unity and greatness,” Parliament said.

The legislative body congratulated South Africans for propelling the team to “the pinnacle of world rugby with unwavering support”.

“The Springboks’ relentless spirit and dedication have illuminated the hearts of millions, reaffirming the greatness of South Africa and reminding the world of the extraordinary nation we are. Our hearts overflow with pride.

“Special commendations to team captain, Siya Kolisi, whose exemplary leadership combined with the collective efforts of the profoundly talented team, coaching staff, and the SARU leadership and all role players, culminated in a victory that resonates deeply not only in South Africa but across the African continent,” the statement read. – SAnews.gov.za

Saudi Arabia opens e-Visa system to South Africans

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has commended the opening of the Saudi Arabia e-Visa system to South Africans.

This makes it easy for tourists from South Africa to apply for an e-visa for their travels to Saudi Arabia.

This follows de Lille’s recent official visit to Saudi Arabia to strengthen tourism relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced recently that it was expanding its visitor e-Visa programme to travellers from eight more countries, bringing the total to 57.

“I am extremely pleased with this development as South Africa also became the first African country to be added to the list. This will certainly bring immense benefits for leisure and Umrah travellers and for our efforts to grow tourism between South Africa and Saudi Arabia,” de Lille said.

The multi-entry eVisa is valid for one year and allows travellers to visit the Kingdom for up to 90 days at a time. It costs 535 Saudi riyals, which includes medical insurance.

The tourist visa allows travellers to take part in tourism-related activities such as events, family and relative visits, leisure, and Umrah (excluding Hajj) and excludes other activities such as studying.

In terms of the South African visa system, travellers from Saudi Arabia are part of the visa exempt countries and do not require a visa to travel to South Africa for a period of up to 90 days.

De Lille said Saudi Arabia is fast becoming an attractive tourist destination and is a key partner in department’s efforts to grow tourism between South Africa and the rest of the world.

The Department of Tourism has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Department which outlines their joint objectives to grow tourism between the two countries.

The Minister recently undertook an official visit to Saudi Arabia to attend the International World Tourism Day conference where various engagements took place to strengthen tourism relations and cooperation with Saudi Arabian stakeholders.

At the conference, the Minister met with a range of Saudi Arabian stakeholders, including the Air Connectivity Programme team within the Ministry of Tourism, as well as the Saudi Tourism Authority.

Discussions covered actions needed to improve air connectivity between Saudi Arabia and South Africa and a joint marketing strategy to promote both destinations to travellers in both countries.

Saudi Arabian Airlines has further announced the recommencement of a direct flight between Jeddah and Johannesburg starting on 1 December 2023.

“During our engagements, we shared research with the Saudi Air Connectivity Team to motivate for a direct flight between Jeddah and Cape Town. The e-Visa development is significant for South Africa as many Muslim citizens travel for religious purposes. Along with the direct flights, this will ease travel for many tourists but especially for religious tourism and pilgrimages.

“Through the fast and easy-to-use online portal, South Africans can apply for an e-Visa and discover the warm hospitality of Saudi people the rich heritage, vibrant culture, and diverse and breath-taking landscapes; from the mountains of Abha to the beaches of the Red Sea to the shifting sands of the Empty Quarter,” the Minister said.

De Lille added that South Africa will continue working with its counterparts in Saudi Arabia, through the Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb to look at new and innovative ways to grow tourism between the two countries, as “this key sector is an important part of our countries’ economies and a key job creator”. – SAnews.gov.za

SA participates in Cairo Water Week

Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo will participate in a high-level ministerial panel discussion at the sixth edition of Cairo Water Week (CWW2023) in Cairo, Egypt this week.

The conference, to be held from 29 October to 2 November 20203, is organised by the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and will be attended by ministers, water experts, stakeholders, and academics from around the world.

Held under the theme: “Action on Water Adaptation for Sustainability”, the conference will focus on fostering cross-sectoral cooperation and present innovative solutions for the sustainable management of water resources.

Over the past five years, Cairo Water Week has evolved into a prominent global platform for addressing pressing water-related challenges.

The Department of Water and Sanitation said through its diverse workshops, seminars, and knowledge exchanges, it has played a pivotal role in shaping innovative solutions and collaborative strategies to tackle issues such as water scarcity, climate change, and ecosystem resilience.

The Deputy Minister will engage in constructive discussions on vital issues, including policies, strategies, plans, and measures related to water adaptation, to ensure sustainability for the Arab, Mediterranean, African, and worldwide regions.

“Among the issues to be discussed is technologies of reclamation and desalination of water in the African region, which can increase freshwater supplies to areas that are experiencing decreased water supply and water quality,” the department said in a statement.

The department noted that the current installed desalination inventory in South Africa is very modest in comparison to other parts of the world like the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Australia and the United States of America.

“There are about 33 plants that have been built over several years, with a combined capacity of not exceeding a total of 200 Ml/d to treat various types of waste water, including seawater and mine water for mostly domestic consumption.

“The plant capacities range from 1 kl/d to 47 Ml/d, but the vast majority are smaller than 10 Ml/d and were implemented as emergency drought response projects. Such plants are generally not deemed viable for continued operation when the drought breaks and conditions returned to normal. For comparison some of the new schemes coming up in MENA region are in the order of 600 Ml/day,” the department said.

Mahlobo said South Africa needs to increase projects for the reuse, reclamation, and desalination of seawater to strengthen its water resilience.

Government congratulates World Cup champions

Government has joined millions of South Africans, Africans and Springbok fans from across the globe in congratulating the 2023 Rugby World Cup champions, after beating News Zealand during the tournament’s final at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday night.

In this record-breaking victory, the Springboks showed determination, creativity and strength against New Zealand’s All Blacks.

South Africa’s unwavering confidence in the Springboks was symbolised by the presence of President Cyril Ramaphosa in France, to help the champions to lift the Webb Ellis trophy.

The national rugby side is the first team in a Rugby World Cup to win the tournament for a record fourth time.

Minister in The Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said the victory confirms South Africa’s highest standing in world rugby.

“The Springboks symbolise the resolve, resilience and unbreakable spirit of South Africans as a nation. Never has a team, which was once at the centre of dividing a nation, risen time and again to unite and rally the nation behind one flag, a single identity, and the nation brand.

“The Springboks represent something more than themselves; they unite us in our diversity but one nation. We are proud of the leadership of Captain Siya Kolisi, who led the mighty team to victory. We would also like to appreciate the support of South Africans of all works of life,” Ntshavheni said.

The Minister emphasised that supporting national teams is not just about the game, but “forging a collective spirit that extends beyond the field”.

“It's about instilling a sense of pride in our national identity, reminding us of the incredible strength we possess when we stand together.”

She added that the Springbok’s have etched South Africa’s name in the annals of history.

“We are eternally proud of you Bokke! In your team effort, the camaraderie in your camp, and a truly South African vibe you carried, you demonstrated that indeed we are stronger together - you proved that to the more than 62 million of us and millions more from the African continent who stood behind you. We can’t wait to welcome you back home,” Ntshavheni said.

Government has also congratulated the All Blacks for their excellent display of rugby skill against the Springboks and commended all South Africans for rallying behind the team and supporting them through the nail-biting games. – SAnews.gov.za
