Nuclear energy still a ‘critical component’ of SA energy mix

Location: News

Nuclear energy still a 'critical component' of SA energy mix

There is global affirmation that nuclear energy has a part to play in responding to the question of climate change.

This is according to Deputy Minister of Energy and Electricity Samantha Graham-Maré who was speaking during the Nuclear Seminar hosted by the department in Tshwane on Thursday.

“There is global acceptance of nuclear energy as an integral part of the solution to mitigate the impact of climate change. We therefore need to work together to ensure that nuclear energy becomes an important part of the Just Energy Transition.

“It is clear that nuclear is a critical component of South Africa’s energy mix – offering a low carbon, reliable source of energy that can contribute significantly to the country’s energy security and climate goals, she said.

Graham-Maré said South Africa remains committed to fulfilling the objectives of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019, while refining the IRP 2023.

“[The IRP] sets out a requirement of 2 500MW of nuclear power to ensure the stability of South Africa’s power grid. In turn, driving the reindustrialisation of our economy and the promise of economic growth that leads to job creation,” she said.

The Deputy Minister added that although new nuclear build is urgent for ensuring energy stability, the Ministry will not compromise on “public participation, adherence of statutory regulatory requirements and openness and transparency in decision making, procurement and the implementation of our new nuclear build”.

In that regard, the Ministerial determination for the procurement of the nuclear energy was withdrawn last month.

She said the negative perceptions around nuclear energy must be changed.

“Nuclear still carries somewhat of a stigma. Much of this is ignorance perpetuated by [a view of] government shrouded in secrecy manned by scientists in hazmat suits and the fear generated through the cold war era of the total destruction of the planet as a result of a nuclear war. It is up to all of us to change these perceptions.

“This summit is the first leg of that process. Given South Africa’s expertise and commitment to nuclear energy over the years, this summit is a key engagement with the nuclear industry in SA that we hope will become a regular feature of our agenda,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has today, Wednesday, 14 August 2024, commended the Free State Provincial Government, the Kopanong Local Municipality,  as well as the Jagersfontein Development Project, on progress achieved in coordinating support, to address the challenges faced by communities in Jagersfontein, following the collapse of a tailings dam wall on September 11, 2022, resulting in a mud slide which damaged infrastructure and homes in the area.

Deputy President Mashatile has been delegated the responsibility to provide leadership in the implementation of rapid response interventions on service delivery and trouble-shooting in service delivery hotspots in the country, by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In pursuit of this critical mandate, the Deputy President undertook a service delivery oversight visit to Jagersfontein, last year in May, as part of efforts towards finding a lasting solution to service delivery challenges in the municipality, with specific focus on the efficient and equitable supply of water, and the resettlement of community members affected by the Jagersfontein Development Project dam disaster.

The visit by Deputy President Mashatile brought together various role players such, as government, private sector as well as civil society representatives, to deliberate on various mechanisms aimed at improving the functioning of municipality and in particular, on efforts to address the concerns raised by the community of Jagersfontein.

In this regard, Deputy President Mashatile has expressed his appreciation to all key role players, on progress achieved and also thanked the management of the Jagersfontein Development project in particular, for delivering on their promise to urgently build houses, for the affected community members.

“The remarkable progress we continue to make, brings us closer towards restoring better living conditions for the people of Jagersfontein. Such progress bears testimony that working together through partnership between government and the private sector, we can create a better life for all our citizens”, said Deputy President Mashatile.

The Deputy President has further emphasised the importance of expediting the process of addressing all other outstanding critical matters of water supply challenges experienced by residents, agricultural support needed, as well as responding to educational needs of youth in the area.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has praised the Free State provincial government, the Kopanong Local Municipality, and the Jagersfontein Development Project for progress achieved in coordinating support to address the challenges communities face in Jagersfontein.

This follows the collapse of a tailings dam wall in 2022, resulting in a mudslide which damaged infrastructure and homes in the area.

Government commits to supporting athletes for 2028 Olympics

With South Africa having doubled its tally of medals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has set his sights on providing financial support to athletes who aspire to participate in the 2028 Olympics.

Addressing a media briefing welcoming the return of team South Africa at the OR Tambo International Airport, the Minister committed to taking 300 athletes to the 2028 Olympic Games taking place in Los Angeles, United States.

“I can promise the nation that come 2028, the athletes will get [financial] assistance. This is a massive opportunity for our country to showcase the best of our athletes. The road to Los Angeles starts now at school sports and community sports,” McKenzie said on Tuesday.

He said he was ecstatic about the performance of team South Africa at the Olympics.

“They have doubled their tally. They got three medals in Toyko, in Paris we [were] standing on six medals. They have done very well under trying circumstances.

“We must invest money in our athletes. We are going to make sure that money goes to the right people. As the sports Minister, I am very proud of what our athletes have achieved in Paris,” McKenzie said.

Swimmer Tatjana Smith, who the Minister described as “our most decorated Olympian” and members of the athletics relay team, returned home to a hero's welcome this morning, after winning medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

With her recent achievements, Smith has become the greatest Olympian produced by the country, with two gold medals and two silver medals in breaststroke swimming.

South Africa also secured a historic silver medal in the 4×100 meters relay, with the team comprising Bayanda Walaza, Bradley Nkoana, Shaun Maswanganyi, and Akani Simbine.

“Smith is the most decorated athlete that we have ever produced as a country. You have not only achieved on the field, but you have also achieved off the field. We as a country are proud of you.  You have shown us what is possible. We are a sporting nation. You have brought this country together. You are one of the greatest heroes that this country has ever had,” the Minister said.

Sharing experiences

Smith announced her retirement at the Paris Olympics. However, she has offered to share her experience with other swimmers.

“I am happy to engage with athletes and give my perspective on the sport. We can learn from each other. I am happy to inspire. I am available if you want to bounce [off] some ideas. I am willing to help and be there,” she said.

Smith said knowing that this was the last time she gets to wear the country’s colours was a bitter pill to swallow.

“It’s been 22 years since I have been swimming. It’s going to be a whole lifestyle change. I am also giving myself space to figure out what I can do. It was a bitter sweet moment when I made the decision to retire. Going into Paris, I wasn’t planning on retiring. It happened during the competition. I felt a lot of peace knowing that it’s okay.

“Sometimes we don’t want to let go because we are unsure of what the future looks like. I just had peace that I need to trust God in this and the He will provide. It is a bitter pill to swallow that I am finished. This is the last time I will be wearing the green and gold colours,” she said.

The swimmer said while competing in sports comes with a lot of challenges, she managed to overcome them.

“Sport is expensive, and the cost of living is expensive. You need financial backing to compete at international levels. Representing my country has had its challenges but we still rise above them. We need to get more people and more representation into sports. It’s important,” she said. -SAnews.gov.za
