LG Electronics South Africa (https://www.LG.com/global/) has always been a leader in engineering excellence and professional development. This is why it is no surprise that LG Electronics South Africa has been awarded verification as an Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Service Provider.

“In South Africa, LG Electronics is committed to professional development within the engineering profession and landscape, whether through high-quality training or development programs,” states Andries Bekker, Air Solutions Field Engineering Team Leader at LG Electronics South Africa. “By being granted this status, LG can now aim to provide engineers with all the skills and knowledge they need to grow and prosper.”

Setting the bar higher

When it comes down to the details of the ECSA CPD Service Provider verification, there are a few key factors to consider. Once LG Electronics application was submitted and approved based on the criteria that align with the ECSA's CPD policy, a review was conducted. From there, when successful, LG was formally recognised as an ECSA CPD Service Provider.

Consistency means quality, which is why service providers need to undergo another review every three years to ensure high-quality CPD programs are consistently being delivered. There are plenty of incredible benefits of gaining ECSA CPD Service Provider Status. For one, it showcases LG Electronics well-established reputation in the engineering community, and what's more, it highlights LG's dedication to enhancing professional standards, supporting lifelong learning for engineers, and boosting career development.

Transforming careers

LG's involvement will play a significant role in providing validated Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities for engineering professionals. In order to contribute to the engineering community, a range of exclusive training programs and activities will be created that match ECSA standards. What's more, all of these programs and activities will provide the latest industry-relevant content.

“All of LG's learning experiences promise to produce continuous improvements in the engineering field with programs that are always relevant and led by qualified professionals and industry experts,” says Bekker.

Leading the way

Because of LG's recognition as an ECSA CPD Service Provider, engineers are ensured that they have access to all of the relevant information and up-to-date knowledge so that they can excel in their fields.

Looking at LG's future CPD offerings, it is crystal clear that LG is invested in prioritising the professional development of engineering professionals. Not only does this mean that the engineering workforce will be strengthened, but it also promises to create a culture of continuous learning within the community.

Elevating the standard

The importance of ECSA accreditation in the engineering field is crucial for plenty of reasons including professional recognition, quality assurance, career advancement opportunities, and lifelong learning and development.

However, what does this mean for LG Electronics position in the industry? In short, it gives LG a competitive advantage over other establishments because LG is now a credible and reputable source of educational training programs in the engineering sector.

“In terms of the future of engineering education and development, there are always expanding possibilities,” explains Bekker. “Broader curriculum offerings, collaboration with educational institutions, and further research and development opportunities are just a handful of opportunities brought about by LG's ECSA CPD accreditation.”

What lies ahead

In light of LG's ECSA accreditation, the plans for CPD program development include establishing and maintaining clear objectives that align with ECSA standards, providing a range of diverse course offerings, and so much more.

“LG Electronics South Africa is committed to providing the best training programs to empower engineers. For that reason LG continues to be a leader in technical innovation and professional education, and now even more so in the engineering environment,” concludes Bekker.

Over 15,000 attendees were welcomed to the 27th annual Africa Tech Festival (www.AfricaTechFestival.com) by South African Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Hon. Solly Malatsi. The Department is an official partner of this year's event, which features more than 300 exhibitors and 400 speakers representing all facets of the tech ecosystem.

Emphasising a shared vision of a digitally connected, inclusive, and prosperous Africa, leveraging technology to drive economic and social progress, the Minister reaffirmed host country South Africa's commitment to bridging the digital divide through policy, partnerships, and investments in universal connectivity and affordability. “While technology holds enormous promise, it is essential that we harness this potential in a way that can benefit all the people on the continent and the rest of the world. South Africa is honoured to play its role on this journey, both as a leader and a partner to our fellow African countries,” he said.

Organised by Informa Tech (https://www.InformaTech.com/), the Africa Tech Festival's anchor events –AfricaCom, AfricaTech, and AfricaIgnite – along with the AI Summit Cape Town, provided delegates with the opportunity to explore enterprise tech innovation and disruption across key sectors such as cybersecurity, cloud, data centres, and green ICT.

Highlights of the first two days of the event, which ran from 12 to 14 November at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, included:

AI Summit Cape Town

Hon. Mondli Gungubele, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, opened the inaugural AI Summit Cape Town. Along with introducing the newly-formed AI Institute of South Africa, he called for collaboration among government, industry, academia, and civil society to maximise AI's benefits while addressing challenges like job displacement and ethical considerations, saying, “Let's seize this opportunity to shape a future where AI helps us uplift our citizens, drive economic growth, transform our society for the better and leave no one behind.”

The AI Summit features the biggest names and brightest minds in AI, all exploring how this transformative technology can create a brighter future for Africa. For instance, the panel session Navigating AI Policy Challenges: Collaborative Approaches to Strengthen Governance in Africa focused on fostering global cooperation in AI governance, emphasising cross-border collaboration, universal safety standards, and ethical innovation. The discussion also highlighted the role of public-private partnerships in implementing equitable AI policies.

AfricaIgnite

AfricaIgnite is the flagship event for founders, investors, and key players in the tech ecosystem. It supports market access and investment opportunities.

The panel Overcoming the Funding Winter: Strategies for Early-Stage Start-Ups highlighted resilience in the early-stage start-up ecosystem, exploring strategies employed by successful start-ups to attract investors and secure funding in a competitive market. It also examined the role of accelerators and incubators in fostering growth and supporting the development of African tech start-ups.

A dynamic fireside chat on The Rise of Debt Financing as an Alternative Funding Model explored the growing appeal of debt financing for late-stage start-ups, delving into the key drivers behind this trend. The benefits of debt financing and insights into the strategic considerations start-ups should evaluate when transitioning to this alternative funding model were also discussed.

Another high-level panel, titled The Search for Liquidity: Navigating African Startup Exits, explored the growing dominance of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as the main exit strategy for African start-ups, especially in fintech, with IPOs remaining scarce. It also examined the factors driving this trend and its impact on the African startup ecosystem.

AfricaCom

AfricaCom brings together Africa-focused connectivity leaders and the brightest minds in the telecoms space. Within the Connectivity & Digital Infrastructure stream, an insightful panel discussion on Connecting Africa's Next Billion: Scaling Africa's Digital Infrastructure explored the economic and social benefits and challenges of expanding internet connectivity. Industry experts and stakeholders discussed the critical role of governments, telcos, and tech innovators in building sustainable infrastructure to expand internet access, particularly in remote and underserved areas, to advance digital inclusion across the continent.

In the Telcos of Tomorrow stream, panellists explored AI's transformative potential in the telecoms sector in a session titled Integrated AI: Telco Blueprints for Business Model and Service Delivery Transformation. Emphasising how AI optimises complex organisational systems, the panel discussed the challenges of implementing these systems.

AfricaTech

Driving funding for female-led start-ups was the theme of the Empowering Female Founders: Narrowing the Gender Gap in Venture Capital panel discussion, which addressed the persistent challenge of gender disparity in African venture capital. Networks, mentorship, technical support, celebrating successful female founders as role models, and challenging stereotypes were some of the topics.

“2024 is a standout year for Africa Tech Festival, being the largest event in almost three decades. We have more attendees and exhibitors, more features, more content, and more opportunities to position Africa as a tech powerhouse. The opening days have been overwhelmingly positive, with delegates engaging, networking, and sharing insights that have the potential to reshape Africa's tech ecosystem. We are seeing innovative solutions to the continent's tech challenges and a commitment to contribute positively to growing Africa's economic potential. I'm confident that this will continue not only for the remainder of the event but into the future as well,” concluded James Williams, Event Director of Africa Tech Festival.

Government to host Construction Summit

Concerns around the so-called construction mafia, security and other criminal activity at construction sites, as well as the promotion of practical solutions for building crime-free environments within the construction industry, will come under the spotlight at the Construction Summit on Crime-Free Construction Sites next week.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb), will host the summit at the Durban International Convention Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dean Macpherson, has expressed his strong commitment to addressing crime at construction sites across the country.

“This is a fulfilment of a promise I made shortly after taking office to host a summit to deal with construction site stoppages nationwide.

“Construction sites should be places where workers build not just structures, but also a sense of safety, respect and trust. Unfortunately, crime has been a persistent challenge in the sector, undermining productivity, escalating costs and putting lives at risk,” Macpherson said.

The Minister committed to working with industry stakeholders to find solutions for safer work environments and underscored the government's dedication to eliminating crime, ensuring that workers return home safely each day.

The SAPS will also play a key part in the stakeholder engagement as law enforcement plays a critical role in maintaining security. Accordingly, Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, is expected to address the summit to reinforce the role of the police in combatting crime in the sector.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is also expected to speak at Tuesday’s summit.Other Speakers will include the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal and the Mayor of eThekwini.

The cidb, a key partner in ensuring the professionalism and development of the construction industry, is equally dedicated to creating a conducive environment for effective delivery of infrastructure.

Bongani Dladla, CEO of the cidb, highlighted the importance of industry-wide collaboration in promoting security and efficiency in construction.

"We’re looking forward to playing an active role in this summit as we strongly believe that the construction industry is vital to our nation's growth, and addressing crime is essential to protecting both assets and the lives of those who build our future. The cidb is committed to supporting initiatives like the National Construction Summit to set new safety standards and collaborate with the DPWI, law enforcement, and industry partners to make construction sites safer and more efficient,” said Dladla.

The summit will feature a series of expert-led discussions on legislation and policy, security and law enforcement, community engagement, empowerment, skills development and other strategic topics to equip stakeholders with the tools needed to combat crime on construction sites.

It will also provide an opportunity for networking and forging partnerships aimed at improving site security and promoting the safety of workers. - SAnews.gov.za

Leaders in energy, investors converge for Africa Energy Week

Leaders in energy, investors converge for Africa Energy Week

The African continent’s vast energy-related resources have the potential to forge a prosperous path for the continent.

This is according to Minister of Energy and Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s written notes for his address at the African Energy Week (AEW), which is underway at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

AEW brings together Africa’s leaders in energy, investors and executives in the sector.

“Africa’s path forward lies in seizing control of our energy destiny. Our continent’s vast resources, rich potential, and resilience make us capable not just of fueling our homes and industries but of powering a new African century.

“But this will require unity of purpose, a commitment to innovation, and a collective resolve to harness Africa’s energy to serve African needs,” Ramokgopa said.

Powering the future

The Minister insisted that the continent – despite its challenges, including energy poverty – has the “potential to lead the world in renewable energy and innovative energy solutions”.

“Africa’s potential for renewable energy is unmatched globally. The continent is rich in diverse renewable resources, each offering a path toward sustainable growth that is less dependent on fossil fuels and more aligned with global climate commitments,” Ramokgopa said.

Going further, the Minister cited the number of renewable energy sources available to the continent including solar and wind energy and hydropower.

“With vast stretches of land bathed in sunlight year-round, Africa has some of the highest solar irradiation levels in the world, especially across regions in the Sahara and Sub-Saharan Africa. Solar energy has the potential to power communities, businesses, and industrial zones, especially in off-grid and rural areas.

“From the coastal winds of Egypt to the strong inland gusts in Kenya and Ethiopia, Africa’s wind corridors hold immense potential for generating clean electricity. Expanding wind energy capacity offers not only a path to sustainability but also an opportunity for job creation in turbine manufacturing and maintenance.

“Africa has significant untapped potential, especially in countries with major rivers, such as the Congo, Nile, and Zambezi. Hydropower projects, when sustainably managed, can provide baseload power to support industrialisation and rural electrification, helping reduce energy costs for industries,” the Minister explained.

African Energy Agenda

Ramokgopa told the conference that as South Africa takes up its leadership of the G20 later this year, it is “positioned to champion Africa’s energy priorities on a global platform”.

“South Africa will advocate for energy policies that bridge the development gap, recognising the continent’s need for clean energy and affordable access. In leading the G20, South Africa will focus on strategic interventions to address Africa’s unique energy needs and support a resilient, inclusive future,” he said.

In relation to this, Ramokgopa emphasised that solutions to Africa’s energy challenges must “accelerate sustainable growth, while considering African economies' unique challenges”.

“Through our G20 leadership, South Africa is committed to championing an African energy agenda that is bold, just, and rooted in an African value system. Together, let us light up Africa with power and the promise of progress, sovereignty, and sustainable prosperity for every African citizen.

“As South Africa leads the G20, we are dedicated to championing an African energy agenda that addresses our challenges, harnesses our resources, and reflects our vision for self-reliance and prosperity.

“Let us seize this moment to build an energy secure Africa, where every community is empowered, every economy is strengthened, and our shared commitment to the future is unwavering. Together, we can light up Africa not just with power, but with the promise of a brighter, more equitable future for all,” Ramokgopa said. – SAnews.gov.za

SIU, GP Legislature sign MoU

SIU, GP Legislature sign MoU

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Integrity Commission have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance governance, ethics, and integrity through collaborative oversight.

The SIU said in a statement that the two will embark on activities including responding to complaints, sharing reports, exchanging governance information and collaborating on joint projects.

“The cooperation will also involve sharing practical experience, organising roundtable discussions, and referring complaints between the parties. Specific implementation strategies will be developed through project-specific memoranda of agreements. A monitoring and implementation committee will conduct quarterly assessments,” the SIU said.

Integrity Commissioner at the legislature, Koko Mashigo, said the signing of the MoU “lays the foundation for a fruitful and mutually beneficial collaboration”.

“This partnership is built on mutual respect, trust, and a shared vision of making a broader impact by ensuring that the institutions we represent and all spheres of government conform to the highest standard of ethical behaviour.

“By combining our resources and leveraging your skills and competencies, we are destined to make a meaningful impact in our respective institutions,” Mashigo said.

SIU Head Advocate Andy Mothibi said the move was another step in implementing and maintaining high standards of integrity in the public sector.

“We are delighted that the SIU and the Gauteng Legislature have agreed to this memorandum of understanding. So today marks a new chapter in our shared journey.

“We are not just signing a document. We are cementing what is a promise to ourselves and a promise to the public, a promise to work together to innovate and to create value that extends far beyond our individual capabilities.

Internationally Acclaimed Student TV Quiz Show Africa Challenge Returns as University Challenge Africa!

Location: News
University Challenge Africa

The popular and internationally acclaimed TV quiz show formerly known as Celtel Africa Challenge and then Zain Africa Challenge, is making a comeback as University Challenge Africa (www.UniversityChallengeAfrica.com) in late 2025. The competition sees the brightest students from universities across Africa matching wits in a televised question-and-answer game show.

Richard Reid, the game's creator and producer, shares his excitement: “We are proud to bring back our iconic game under its new name, University Challenge Africa. With education being a top priority across the continent, we remain committed to working with our broadcast partners and sponsors to highlight the academic accomplishments of Africa's students and universities.”

University Challenge Africa is not just a quiz show; it's an opportunity for students to shine on the international stage, test their skills and knowledge against peers from across the continent, and win a share of over $1,000,000 in scholarships and grants. With millions of viewers and a strong social media following, the show has a lasting impact on participating students and universities.

With previous versions of the competition featuring universities from eight African countries, the new format promises even more representation. Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa are planned participants in 2025, with universities from several other countries on the invitation list.

Reflecting on the programme's prior success, Tito Alai, who was the Group Chief Commercial Officer of Celtel and Zain Group, said: “Throughout its history, the competition was a source of pride in the accomplishments of our young men and women. Sponsoring the Africa Challenge was a great strategic marketing and CSR investment, reflecting our commitment to education, enriching students' lives, and boosting participating institutions' reputations.”

Past winners echo these sentiments, emphasising the transformative impact of the competition. James Tuitoek, Vice Chancellor of three-time winners Egerton University in Kenya, noted the university's pride in its students, along with the fact that the competition had not only enabled them to set up a computer lab with 24/7 internet access for students but also positioned Egerton as a university of choice for international students. Similarly, when Ibadan University in Nigeria won in season three, the House of Representatives Chairman on Education, Hon. Farouk Lawan praised the programme as an educational platform playing a pivotal role in promoting education across Africa.

In addition to garnering praise from administrators and participants, University Challenge Africa also brings together some of the brightest minds from universities across the continent, with diverse interests and fields of study, presenting an opportunity for businesses to recruit future talent.

The return of the successful University Challenge Africa will be welcome news to the continent, reflecting the competition's rich tradition of educational excellence and great entertainment, and delivering on the promise of African development.

African Energy Chamber Reaffirms Commitment to Host AEW in Cape Town Through 2030

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org) – the voice of the African energy sector – is proud to announce that the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference remains committed to hosting the African continent's most successful energy event in Cape Town. AEW was established in 2021 under the premise to make energy poverty history by 2030 and, now in its fourth immensely successfully edition, we remain devoted to keeping the event at Cape Town's International Conference Center (CTICC) until 2030.

Africa Oil Week (AOW) recently confirmed it will hold its 2025 edition in Accra, Ghana, and while we wish them the best in their endeavors, the Chamber is steadfast in its commitment to hosting AEW – the continent's premier energy event – in Cape Town. In 2021, AOW made the decision to take its conference to Dubai, citing the fact that Africa was not equipped to host a large-scale conference in a safe manner due to the COVID-19 pandemic. AOW claimed that the event is focused on supporting Africa's needs, and yet the decisions to leave Cape Town for Dubai contradicted this very ambition.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

What AEW sought to prove, and was successful in doing, is that Africa has always been capable of hosting large-scale events. Under very strict COVID-19 safety measures, AEW 2021 hosted delegations from both the African and global energy sector. In 2022, the conference attracted thousands of delegates, while in 2023, the conference supported an even bigger and better event. When Africa needed investment, AEW was quick to respond, providing a platform where stakeholders could meet, and deals be made.

Now, in 2024, AEW: Invest in African Energy continues our mandate to eradicate energy poverty by 2030 and serves as the official meeting place for Africa's energy elite. At the forefront of the African energy industry, the conference promotes the role Africa plays in global energy matters, centered around Africa-led dialogue and decision making. That's why we remain committed to Cape Town, a city that represents an industrial, business and socioeconomic hub for the entire African continent. Furthermore, AEW's focus transcends South Africa, with the event recognizing and supporting the development of various oil and gas projects across the continent.

South Africa, and notably Minister Gwede Mantashe and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy have been steadfast supporters of AEW since its inception in 2021. Through our partnership with the City of Cape Town and the government, we have created numerous job opportunities in Cape Town, contributing significantly to the local tourism industry and Cape Town-based vendors alike. We remain committed to our promise to position Cape Town as the hub for oil, gas and energy discussions in Africa.

We reaffirm our pledge to maintain AEW's presence in Cape Town, rather than relocating to Dubai or other destinations outside of Africa. Our focus is on addressing key issues surrounding the African energy sector, ensuring that South African service providers, small business, local enterprises and stakeholders continue to benefit from our efforts. AEW not only generates jobs, but also stimulates economic growth.

As the largest energy conference in Africa, we acknowledge the challenges faced by Cape Town and are dedicated to making a positive impact on the community.

Meanwhile, outside of South Africa, the continent is seeing monumental growth. In Senegal and Mauritania, first production is soon expected for the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim conventional gas development while Senegal, just this year, achieved first oil production, thus showcasing the potential for offshore exploration and production investment. In Uganda, progress continues to be made on the Lake Albert Development, a multi-faceted project that promises new opportunities for energy security and industrialization in East Africa. In the Republic of the Congo, marginal projects are making headway as the government prioritizes gas investment and development while Libya recently announced that oil production has reached 1.217 million barrels per day.

Meanwhile, South Africa's neighbor, Namibia, has made a litany of major oil and gas discoveries since 2022 and is making significant strides to develop these major finds. Mozambique is gradually making progress with its three major gas projects, opening new opportunities for regional trade. All of these projects and many more are showcased at AEW: Invest in African Energy, with investment opportunities made clear to existing and potential investors. AEW promotes the African position on the future of Africa's energy sector. By advocating personal responsibility, free markets, individual liberty and an enabling environment for investors, AEW ensure that Africa's oil and natural gas industry benefits Africans, rather than continuing a reliance on foreign aid and assistance.

Therefore, we stand wholly committed to leveraging all Cape Town has to offer, a city that has been good to every edition of our conference since 2021. At the CTICC, we will continue to host panel discussions, investor forums, industry summits and one-one-one meeting opportunities and driving the discussions that will reshape the trajectory of the continent's energy development.

“The Chamber is unwavering in our commitment to hosting AEW in Cape Town, a city that embodies the spirit of opportunity and innovation. The city is a hub for Africa's energy dialogue and, by staying here, we reinforce our mission to make energy poverty history by 2030. Cape Town has proven to be a premier venue for fostering critical dialogue and investment in Africa's energy sector and we believe that this vibrant city is the perfect backdrop for our mandate. Together, we will continue to drive progress and empower local stakeholders for sustainable growth,” states AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk.

African Energy Week (AEW) 2024 National Oil Companies (NOC) Lineup to Unlock Project, Partnership Opportunities in Oil and Gas

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

African energy demand is projected to more than double by 2050, with fossil fuels anticipated to account for up to 60% of the continent's energy mix by 2040. This trend highlights the growing importance oil and gas will continue to hold in Africa. In partnership with international oil companies and private E&P firms, the continent's national oil companies (NOC) are responding to this projection by prioritizing fast-tracked project development, promoting collaborative exploration and production to bring new reserves online.

The upcoming African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference – scheduled for November 4-8 in Cape Town – features a strong lineup of African and global national oil companies (NOC). This lineup reflects a strong intention by NOCs to collaborate, unlock additional reserves and drive oil and gas projects forward across both emerging and mature markets in Africa.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit http://www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Southern Africa has yielded some of Africa's biggest oil and gas finds in recent years. Namibia – which featured a string of offshore finds since 2022 – has rapidly emerged as an oil and gas hotspot, with Galp Energias' Mopane discovery estimated to hold 10 billion barrels alone. In South Africa, the 2019 Brulpadda discovery accounted for 10% of the overall discovered volumes in Africa that year while the Luiperd find accounted for 80% of the continent's volumes discovered in 2020. Mature producers such as Angola also continue to unlock additional reserves, with ExxonMobil announcing a discovery at the Likember-01 research well in Block 15 this year. At AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024, Angola's NOC Sonangol, Namibia's NAMCOR and South Africa's SANPC will speak on these discoveries and future opportunities.

East Africa is one of the world's final frontiers for oil and gas exploration, with major discoveries made in recent years showcasing the potential for billion-barrel projects. In exploration, offshore basins in Tanzania have shown trillions of cubic feet of gas while onshore acreage in Uganda holds the promise of new oil supplies. While various cross-border infrastructure projects, LNG facilities and field developments are underway, the region offers significant potential for exploration. During AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024, East African NOCs including the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation; Uganda National Oil Company; and National Oil Company of Malawi will unpack this potential, sharing insight into ongoing projects and untapped investment opportunities.

Contrastingly, West Africa holds some of the biggest oil and gas producing markets on the continent. These include the Republic of Congo – which is diversifying its energy matric through billion-dollar gas investments; Equatorial Guinea – which is diversifying LNG feedstock through agreements signed with regional neighbors; and Gabon – which aims to boost production to 220,000 barrels per day. Concurrently, markets such as Cameroon, Liberia and Ivory Coast hold strategic potential for exploration firms, with recent finds underscoring opportunities in frontier drilling. At AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024, NOCs to the likes of Société nationale des pétroles du Congo; GEPetrol; Gabon Oil Company; and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation are participating. Additionally, the National Hydrocarbons Corporation of Cameroon; the National Oil Company of Liberia; and Petroci have joined.

While West African countries account for a large share of African hydrocarbon production, the same can be said for North Africa, with Algeria representing the largest natural gas producer in Africa. The country's production measured over 100 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2023, with ambitions to exceed 200 bcm in production over the next five years. During 2024, up to 8 oil and gas discoveries have been made, with the NOC Sonatrach signing several exploration agreements with the likes of TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and more to unlock additional basins. Sonatrach is participating at AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024.

In addition to African NOCs, global counterparts including the respective NOCs of Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan have also joined the conference to discuss investment opportunities, future collaborations and how knowledge-sharing can support the next generation of oil and gas projects. Saudi Aramco, for example, which represents one of the biggest gas producers worldwide, offers a wealth of expertise for African NOCs. Similarly, the National Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic, an expert in refining and infrastructure development, stands ready to support Africa as it scales-up domestic refining capacity.

Over a hundred informal traders to receive equipment

Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams will on Thursday handover machinery and equipment to 104 business owners in Greater Tzaneen in the Limpopo province.

“This equipment comes from the various programmes offered by the Department of Small Business Development and its agencies. It is from the Asset Assist Programme (AAP), Cooperatives Development Support Programme (CDSP) and the Informal and Micro Enterprise Development (IMEDP),” the Department of Small Business Development said.

Ndabeni-Abrahams will be accompanied by her Deputy Minister, Jane Sithole, during the handover to the beneficiaries of the IMEDP, which is a 100% grant offered to informal traders.

“Their mission is to handover machinery and equipment to business owners from the region. Informal and Micro enterprises have been promised these implements and this is a promise to be kept.

“The AAP is designed to provide Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) with essential business assets, financial guidance, and expert advisory services. This initiative is vital for ensuring that small businesses have the tools they need to succeed and contribute to economic growth,” the department said.

The CDSP offers blended financing to eligible cooperatives, combining grants and loans to support activities such as the purchase of machinery, equipment, and infrastructure.

KZN Premier condemns bridge attack that claimed Pietermaritzburg mother’s life

KZN Premier condemns bridge attack that claimed Pietermaritzburg mother’s life

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has condemned the brutal bridge attack that claimed the life a Pietermaritzburg mother.

Madhumathie Bunwarie, 62, was killed on Sunday when a car battery was thrown from a bridge and struck the car she was travelling in on the N3, near the Pavilion Shopping Centre. The car battery reportedly crashed through the windscreen, hitting Bunwarie on the head.

At the time of the incident, Bunwarie and her family were returning to Pietermaritzburg after attending a funeral in Durban.

“This appalling act of mischief and criminal recklessness has not only robbed a family of a beloved mother, but it has shaken the entire KwaZulu-Natal community. We cannot, and will not, tolerate such inhumane and cowardly behaviour that brings untold pain and trauma to innocent people,” Ntuli said.

Ntuli extended his heartfelt condolences to the Bunwarie family and their loved ones during this difficult time.

“No words can ease the grief they are feeling but as a province, we mourn with them and promise to act,” Ntuli said.

The Premier has called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the individuals responsible for the heinous act.

He stressed the need for justice, not only for Bunwarie but for all victims of violence and reckless criminality in the province.

“I have instructed the Department of Community Safety and Liaison to work closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to increase police visibility and patrols in high-risk areas, particularly near bridges along major highways. We must ensure that incidents like this are prevented at all costs.

“The safety of our people is non-negotiable. Additional security measures, including the installation of surveillance cameras and heightened monitoring of bridges, will be explored urgently to deter such cowardly acts of violence,” Ntuli said.

Ntuli further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement without delay.

“Together, as a community, we must stand united against those who seek to disrupt the peace and security of our province. May Mrs Bunwarie rest in peace, and may her family find strength in this time of mourning.

“Let this tragic incident serve as a solemn reminder of the importance of compassion, responsibility, and collective vigilance,” Ntuli said. – SAnews.gov.za

Repatriation of remains of fallen struggle heroes a moment of reflection

Repatriation of remains of fallen struggle heroes a moment of reflection

The South African government has received the remains of 49 liberation fighters who died in exile in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The remains were received at the Waterkloof Airforce Base on an emotional Wednesday evening (25 September 2024) for families of the fallen freedom fighters.

Speaking to SAnews, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, said the handover of the remains was a moment of sombre reflection on the sacrifices it took for South Africa to gain its freedom.

“The message is of gratitude to…families who have daughters, sons, fathers and mothers who gave the ultimate price for our freedom. We are able to be here because they gave the final sacrifice.

“It is also for us as a people, to remember where we came from because this didn’t come easy. There are people who died, and we should not be casual about how we use that power because it is a power that came from people who gave their lives,” Motshekga said.

The Minister added that the repatriation of struggle heroes will continue as there are more struggle heroes who died outside of the country.

“The plan is to now do mass repatriations and that’s what has been in the plans for the past two years. But because it takes time, we’ll see if we can do it in gaps of two years. This has been a good lesson in terms of mass repatriations and when we move to other countries…we will have learnt the lessons on how to deal with most of the issues,” she said.

Families remember their heroes

The remains of freedom fighter  Basil February – who died in Zimbabwe – arrived with the cohort.
Speaking to SAnews, his brother Terry said the return of his remains marks the beginning of healing for the family.

“My mother died 11 years ago and…I would like my mother to have been here. I would have liked for this occasion to have happened 12 or 15 years ago, so that she could have been here. My mother died when she was 92 years old. She asked me to make her a promise that I will bring Basil’s remains home and I said I will. Today is such a historic day for our family.

“It does not yet bring closure. It will take a little while. This whole process has…opened some old, deep wounds and it will take a while for those wounds to heal.

“But I can feel that the process has already started. That closure is starting to kick in. I feel a relief and I feel a genuine excitedness because Basil is finally coming home,” February said.

Onica Mahlangu – whose brother Bennet Sibanyoni died in Zambia nearly 40 years ago – described to SAnews, the peacefulness that her brother’s remains brings as the brutal Apartheid security forces took everything that belonged to him – leaving them with nothing to remember him by.

“I have mixed emotions. I feel like this is the first time I have been informed of his death. That’s how much it still hurts. Unfortunately, my mother died with a broken heart…crying for her son. She pleaded with us not to stop searching for his remains. I feel happy that government has not forgotten us and has helped us.

“The repatriation will bring peace to our spirits...our family was tortured. We didn’t even have a photo of him because the Apartheid government took everything that belonged to him and left us with nothing that we could look at and remember him by,” Mahlangu said.

Makabelo Msiza remarked to SAnews that without government, they would not have been able to bring her brother home.

“I am filled with joy because we finally have my sibling back. I know where I will bury him and even when I miss him, I will now know where to go to visit him at his gravesite. I will bury him near my parents’ graves.

“President [Cyril] Ramaphosa has done such a big thing for us. I have been on this road [of trying to get the remains] since Mandela was alive. I have knocked on many doors with no help but today, because of President Cyril Ramaphosa, everything has now been resolved and we can bury our loved ones in peace,” Msiza said.

President Ramaphosa is expected to lead a repatriation and restitution ceremony for the remains at the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum in Tshwane on Friday.

In a statement on Monday, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said that following the arrival of the remains,  government will host the official homecoming ceremony to mark the return of these liberation fighters to the country of their birth.

“Thereafter, reburial ceremonies will be held in the provinces of their origin, ensuring they are laid to rest with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said the GCIS.

The Exile Repatriation Programme is guided by the National Policy of Repatriation and Restitution of Human Remains and Heritage Objects of 2021. This policy was adopted as part of South Africa's broader commitment to ensuring that former liberation fighters who died in exile are returned home and buried with dignity.

The repatriation process is being conducted in close collaboration with regional governments, historical experts, and local communities to guarantee a respectful and well-coordinated return.
