Minister Nzimande visits the late Professor Sibusiso Bengu’s family

Minister Nzimande visits the late Professor Sibusiso Bengu’s family

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Blade Nzimande, is today visiting the family of Professor Sibusiso Bengu to offer his condolences.

Bengu passed away on Monday at the age of 90.

On behalf of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, and South Africa’s entire public science system, Nzimande extended his deepest condolences to Professor Bengu’s wife, Mama Funeka Bengu, his daughters and son, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and colleagues.

“Prof Bengu holds the distinction of leading our iconic university, Fort Hare, into the democratic era as its vice chancellor in the early 1990s, and also served as democratic South Africa's first Minister of Education. In the latter capacity, he played a seminal role in dismantling the apartheid edifice of our country’s education sector and helped to usher in a single, coordinated, non-racial, non-sexist education system.

“As part of the Cabinet of President Nelson Mandela, he led the introduction of a number of foundational laws that helped to shape the policy and institutional architecture of South Africa’s school and post school sector in the decades following the collapse of the apartheid system,” Nzimande said.

These include the South African Schools Act of 1996 and the policy recommendations of the National Commission on Higher Education that guided government’s efforts to reconstruct and transform the apartheid higher education system.

He also played a pioneering role in facilitating the transition from the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA) to the now National Students financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

“I worked with Prof Bengu in a number of capacities. My earliest interaction with him was in the mid-90s, when I was part of the ANC’s negotiating team at the Constitutional drafting process.  During this period, I consulted him regularly on matters relating to education policy. This work helped shape Section 29 of our democratic Constitution. Later, I also worked with him in my capacity as Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Education between 1994 and 1999, and together we championed a number of progressive education laws”, the Minister said.

The Minister explained that in 2022, he approached him on behalf of government to accept the renaming of what was then known as the Historically Disadvantaged Institutions Development Grant (HDI-DG) to be the Sibusiso Bengu Development Programme (SB-DP) - an honour he accepted with great humility, but was quick to warn the Minister to ensure that this programme does not fail.

The Sibusiso Bengu Development Programme (SB- DP) is aimed at redressing the inequalities that have negatively impacted the development and sustainability of the HDIs and seeks to enable them to respond to cross-cutting imperatives, including decolonisation in higher education; indigenous knowledge systems; the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and digitisation.

“On a more personal note, Prof Bengu is one of the people who contributed directly to my personal progress. In 1977, as Dean of students at the University of Zululand, he saved me from dropping out of university by organising a student loan to pay the R100 that was required as part of my outstanding fees in September 1977,” recalled the Minister.

“In Prof Bengu, our country has lost not only one of its most committed educationists, but also a model public servant and patriot, who even when his own health was waning, continued to serve his country and people with dignity and integrity. It is therefore no exaggeration to declare that Prof Bengu was one of those who laid the basis for our democracy.

“May we draw much needed inspiration from his monumental and inspirational legacy of selfless service,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom synchronises Koeberg’s Unit 2 to the grid

Location: News

Eskom synchronises Koeberg’s Unit 2 to the grid

Eskom has successfully synchronised Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in Cape Town, to the national grid.

The unit was synchronised to the national grid on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the Generation Operational Recovery Plan and South Africa’s pursuit of a dependable, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable energy supply.

“This achievement follows an extensive Long-Term Operation (LTO) programme designed to extend Unit 2’s operational lifespan by an additional 20 years,” the power utility said in a statement on Tuesday.

It said that the maintenance programme for Unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, comprehensive inspections, and refuelling activities to ensure the reactor's continued safe and efficient performance.

“These enhancements align with Eskom’s broader strategy to secure the future of Koeberg’s reactors, which are critical to the country’s energy security. With a 930MW contribution, Unit 2 plays a significant role in Eskom’s goal to increase its capacity by 2 500MW by March 2025,” it explained.

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is anticipated to decide on the extension of Unit 2’s operational license in 2025.

“This comes after the successful renewal of Unit 1’s license, which extends its operation until 2044. Unit 1, contributing 930MW to the grid, has shown exceptional reliability since its return to service. Combined, Units 1 and 2 will supply 1 860MW - approximately 5% of South Africa’s total electricity - playing a vital role in reducing loadshedding and stabilising the grid.”

The Koeberg Nuclear Power Station which celebrated 40 years of safe and efficient operation in 2024, stands as a cornerstone of Eskom’s energy portfolio.

The successful completion of Unit 1’s LTO programme in 2023 has set the stage for similar advancements with Unit 2, further solidifying Koeberg’s critical role in South Africa’s energy landscape.

Unit 1 has consistently delivered high levels of performance, and Unit 2 is expected to match or exceed these achievements.

The utility said that Koeberg’s enduring success underscores its significance in meeting South Africa’s energy needs and supporting its transition to a low-carbon economy.

“By forming strategic collaborations with international designers, suppliers, and industry leaders, Koeberg has established itself as a hub for nuclear innovation. These partnerships are anticipated to be crucial as South Africa explores advanced nuclear technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs). This could position the country as a leader in cutting-edge nuclear solutions while continuing to build and maintain a skilled nuclear workforce,” said the Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo.

“As South Africa phases out some of the aging coal-fired power plants by 2030, nuclear energy is poised to provide a reliable and stable baseload supply. Unlike intermittent renewable sources, nuclear power ensures continuous electricity generation, meeting the needs of both residential and industrial users. Its ability to produce carbon-free energy also supports South Africa’s climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” concluded Nxumalo.

Reliability

Eskom anticipates Koeberg’s enhanced performance will be fully realised in the 2026 financial year, with Unit 2’s record of 498 consecutive days of operation and a 93% energy availability factor serving as a benchmark for future reliability.

“While projects like the LTO programme necessitate a higher initial upfront investment, the long-term benefits - including decades of affordable, low-carbon energy - make them indispensable. Koeberg exemplifies how nuclear power can align economic and environmental priorities to create a sustainable energy future. Through the successful execution of the LTO project, our Koeberg team has once more demonstrated the exceptional skills we have to support our country’s nuclear ambitions,” said Eskom’s Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane.

The utility said that as the country advances toward a greener economy, Koeberg remains central to its energy strategy.

“Eskom is dedicated to optimising nuclear power’s potential, ensuring a cleaner, more secure, and cost-effective energy supply for generations to come,” it said. -SAnews.gov.za

RTMC to assist Eastern Cape to improve road safety

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has announced that it will step in to strengthen efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities in the Eastern Cape as holidaymakers prepare to return to the cities and workplaces in the coming days.

In a statement, the RTMC said the interventions will involve the mobilisation of traditional leaders, engagement of public transport operators and will seek to reduce crashes and fatalities in a district with a number of high crashes and fatalities in the province.

“The analysis of fatal crash statistics since the start of the festive season has revealed the Amathole District in the Eastern Cape as one of the top ten districts experiencing a high number of crashes and fatalities nationally.

“The district is one of seven districts in the province and it stretches from Idutywa to Fort Beaufort and includes towns such as Butterworth and Stutterheim,” the RTMC said.

Statistics have further revealed that fatal crashes in this district involved public transport vehicles that had driven long distances between the Western Cape or Gauteng without sufficient rest.

“Law enforcers and the South African Taxi Council have observed that some drivers did not depart from designated areas in district during peak period and travelled inter-provincially to pick up passengers and were fatigued when the crashes occurred,” the RTMC said.

Other districts that will be given attention due to the high number of fatal crashes are eThekwini, City of Johannesburg, City Cape Town, City of Tshwane, Capricorn, Ekurhuleni, Cape Winelands, Vhembe and Fezile Dabi.

“Traffic is expected to peak again from January 1 to the 6th and law enforcement will intensify focus on public transport and visibility. A dedicated team has been put in place to monitor implementation of the road interventions and progress.

“Motorists are reminded to plan their routes appropriately and avoid travelling at night. Statistics show that 37.6% of fatal crash occur between 18:00 and 01:00 and involved pedestrians,” the RTMC said. – SAnews.gov.za

President mourns passing of former Minister of Education

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deep sadness at the passing of Professor Sibusiso Bengu, the democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Education, who has passed away at the age of 90.

According to a statement released by the family, Bhengu died in his sleep on Monday, 30 December, at his home in KwaZulu-Natal.

President Ramaphosa offered his condolences to the family and friends of Prof Bengu, who also served as South Africa’s Ambassador to Germany from 1999 to 2003.

“My thoughts are with Mama Funeka and the family, with whom we are united in this loss.

“Prof Bengu was a pioneering leader of our democratic dispensation and administration, who led the transformation of education in a democratic Government of National Unity, where deep divisions existed about how far this transformation should go.

“Under apartheid, the injustice of unequal education had been at the core of consigning most citizens to intergenerational economic exclusion, poverty and indignity,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President highlighted that the Education Act formulated under Prof Bengu’s leadership and adopted by the country’s fledgling Parliament was a cornerstone of its liberation and unleashed the human potential of all South Africans.

He said that it was and is still the lever for the empowerment and development seen in the lives of individuals and communities today.

“We are therefore indebted to Prof Bengu for his patriotic and visionary service in serving our nation at home and abroad as our Ambassador to Germany.

“His legacy is entrenched through the Sibusiso Bengu Development Programme, which seeks to advance the development of historically disadvantaged institutions in higher education as strong, socially embedded institutions in a diversified post-school education and training system.

“Today, we are grateful for Prof Bengu’s diverse contributions to our development, which will light our way forward. We reflect as well on his life of faith, which inspired his commitment to restoring the dignity of all South Africans. May his soul rest in peace,” President Ramaphosa said.

Prof Bhengu’s life and times

Born in Kranskop, Natal, Prof Bhengu embarked on his teaching career in 1952, later founding Dlangezwa High School in 1969, where he served as principal until 1976.

His leadership extended to the University of Zululand, where he became Dean of Students before leaving South Africa in 1978. His academic achievements were groundbreaking, earning a PhD in Political Sciences from the University of Geneva and becoming the first black Vice-Chancellor of Fort Hare University in 1991, marking a pivotal moment in higher education reform.

In 1994, Prof Bhengu was appointed by President Nelson Mandela as South Africa's first Minister of Education in the democratic era.

He spearheaded the unification of 17 fragmented education departments into a single system, introduced Curriculum 2005 to overhaul the school curriculum, and worked tirelessly to dismantle the structural inequalities of apartheid education.

Following his impactful tenure, he represented South Africa as Ambassador to Germany, showcasing his dedication to upholding the nation’s dignity on the global stage.

Prof Bhengu’s political journey began as Secretary-General of Inkatha yeNkuleleko yeSizwe in 1974.

After leaving South Africa in 1978, he collaborated with the late ANC President, Oliver Tambo, during his years in exile.

While working with the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva, he continued his commitment to justice and equality. Upon his return to South Africa in 1991, Prof Bhengu resumed his lifelong dedication to education and liberation, leaving a legacy of transformative leadership and unwavering service to the nation. – SAnews.gov.za

Gauteng delivers 203 New Year babies

Gauteng public healthcare facilities delivered 203 New Year babies on Wednesday.

The 105 baby boys and 98 baby girls were born between midnight and noon.

This as the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, visited the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, to welcome the newly born babies and deliver baby essential gift packages on 1 January 2025.

“Academic hospitals delivered 31 babies mostly from Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital with 20 babies, followed by Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Steve Biko Academic Hospital with four deliveries each.”

Meanwhile, tertiary hospitals delivered a total of 12 babies. Tembisa Hospital and Kalafong Hospital delivered six babies each.

“The department continues to urge all the mothers to ensure that the birth of their newly born babies are registered with the Department of Home Affairs offices that are in-house at health facilities across the province,” said the Gauteng Department of Health.

The department further urged mothers to prioritise immunisation and exclusive breastfeeding to promote the development of infants.

“As we celebrate the arrival of new life, it is imperative to highlight the vital role of immunization and exclusive breastfeeding in safeguarding the health of infants. All parents must prioritise immunisation to protect their children from preventable diseases.

Similarly, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months provides essential nutrients and strengthens their immune systems,” said the Gauteng MEC.

2025 a year of “great hope” – President Ramaphosa

Location: News

2025 a year of "great hope" - President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on all South Africans to rally together for a better future for all in the New Year.

The President was addressing the nation on Tuesday afternoon on New Years’ Eve.

“As we can embark on a New Year, I call on each and every South African to be part of the journey towards a better future for all. I wish you all a peaceful and prosperous New Year in 2025,” he said.

Looking back
President Ramaphosa called 2024 a year of “change and progress”.

He remarked that this year, South Africans celebrated “the progress made in building a society founded on the ideals of freedom, equality and human rights” as 30 years of Freedom was marked in April.

This was demonstrated in the free and fair elections held this year.

“On the 29th of May 2024, we held our seventh democratic elections peacefully and freely. As the people of South Africa voted for the representatives of their choice, they gave voice to their concerns, their aspirations and their concerns.

“Our people, through their votes, called on political parties to put their differences aside and to work together to put South Africa first. As elected public representatives and acting on the outcomes of the elections, that gave no single party an outright majority to govern South Africa on its own, we heeded the clear message from our people.

“We established a Government of National Unity [GNU], bringing together parties from across the political spectrum. This…GNU, made up of ten political parties committed through the Statement of Intent it adopted to grow an inclusive economy and to create jobs,” he explained.

President Ramaphosa added that the GNU also committed to reduce poverty and lower the cost of living.

“The parties are all working to strengthen the capacity of the State and to deliver services to our people. The outcomes of the May 2024 elections and the establishment of the [GNU] have really enabled South Africa to enter a new era that holds great promise.

“Our economy is slowly but steadily improving, more South Africans are finding jobs. Inflation has been falling making essential goods more affordable for households,” he said.

He also highlighted “increased investment” in roads, rail, public housing, energy, water and sanitation and infrastructure as well as improved business confidence to invest.

“As this happens, more jobs will be created, more livelihoods will be supported, and more local businesses will be sustained. The far-reaching reforms that we started in the Sixth Administration are beginning to show results.

“We are emerging from a debilitating energy crisis that cost immense hardships for our people, households and businesses. Our logistics sector, which is critical to the functioning of our economy has shown notable improvement following the corrective initiatives that we embarked upon in partnership with business, labour and Transnet,” he said.

Those initiatives, the President explained, will “encourage greater investment and make them more efficient”.

Fighting crime

President Ramaphosa said focused efforts – through Operation Shanela and others – have resulted in law enforcement dealing decisively with organised crime, illegal mining, extortion and other priority crimes.
Furthermore, the fight against gender-Based violence (GBV) has also been placed on sharp focus.

“We have strengthened the capabilities of the criminal justice system and improved support for survivors of [GBV]. However, our primary focus must remain on the prevention of [GBV] against young girls and the women of our country.

“Working with civil society…we continue to call upon men and boys to stand at the forefront of changing attitudes and behaviour towards the girls and the women of our country,” he said.
Moving forward

The President acknowledged that South Africa still faces challenges that must be overcome.

“As much as we have made progress, we have to do much more to overcome the challenges that confront our nation. We need to work urgency and purpose to grow our economy and create jobs,” he said.

President Ramaphosa described the year ahead as one that should be looked at with “great hope” by all South Africans.

“As a people, our unity, determination and resilience has seen us through hard and difficult times. Just as this has been a year of great change, we look to the next year with great hope. We will be embarking on a National Dialogue, bringing all South Africans together to develop a common vision for the country.

“In 2025, we will be hosting the very first G20 Summit on African soil. Through our leadership of the G20, we will work for solidarity, equality and sustainable development. That will have an impact on many peoples around the world in various countries.
“May God continue to bless South Africa and protect her people,” President Ramaphosa concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Use fireworks responsibly this New Year's Eve

Residents of Johannesburg have been warned to use fireworks responsibly as they usher in the New Year.

In a post on social media platform, X, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) explained that fireworks can only be used under certain conditions on specific celebratory days between 7pm and 10pm.

On New Year’s Eve, however, fireworks can be used between 11pm and 1am.

“While fireworks can add excitement to celebrations, it is crucial to use them responsibly to ensure the safety of everyone.

“Fireworks cannot be used in public places, such as schools, hospitals, or old age homes, or within 500 meters of a petrol station or explosives factory. A license is required to deal in fireworks. Huge fireworks displays must be authorised by the Council at least 14 days before the event. No one under 16 can use explosives without adult supervision,” the JMPD said.

Fines – between R100 and R1500 – can be imposed against:

  • Anyone who ignites fireworks near animals.
  • Anyone who ignites fireworks near hospitals and old age homes.
  • Anyone igniting fireworks within 500 meters of a petrol station.
  • Permitting or allowing minor to light or ignite fireworks.
  • Failing to obtain permission for fireworks display and to comply with the terms and conditions of fireworks display permission.
  • Failing to ensure that fireworks display be presented only on suitable premises designated by the Council and under the supervision and control of an official designated by the Council.
  • Failing to ensure that the fireworks license in terms of the Explosives Act and a written authority of the EMS Executive Head is in hand when dealing in fireworks.
  • Failing to ensure that a written authority to deal with fireworks from the Executive Head is not contravened.

“The JMPD will be actively monitoring compliance with these regulations and will take appropriate action against individuals who violate the law.

“Fines have been put in place to ensure that the fireworks by-laws are adhered to by all in the city of Johannesburg. JMPD may impound fireworks if any dealer does not adhere to the conditions of fireworks license,” the JMPD said. – SAnews.gov.za

Thousands expected at Cape Town Waterfront for New Year celebrations

The City of Cape Town says it expects some 35 000 people to make their way to Waterfront in Cape Town for the New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration tonight.

The city is gearing up its enforcement forces to deal with the surge in visitors all over the city, including on beaches.

“As New Year’s Eve approaches, the City’s enforcement services are gearing up for the celebrations and increase in visitors to beaches, public spaces and party spots. While beaches will be a particular focus area, other City facilities and public amenities will also be monitored by enforcement staff.

“The City urges residents to please celebrate responsibly, with due regard for their own safety and that of those around them,” a statement from the city said.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, called on the public to “work with enforcement staff so we can all ring in the New Year with fanfare”.

“I want to urge residents to celebrate responsibly, especially if they will have children along and to take cognisance of their own safety and those around them.

“Our staff will be going the extra mile to ensure safety across the city and I want to thank all the departments, both within the City and our external partners, who will be working hard to make the celebrations safe for everyone,” Smith said.

He further urged residents to use fireworks responsibly during celebrations.

Fireworks may not be exploded within 200 metres of any hospital, clinic, petrol station, old-age home, nursing home, or animal welfare organisation, inside any building or on a public street, in any other public place or recreational area, unless you have valid permission to do so.

“Despite the trauma and stress caused to pets and neighbourhoods, there are still those who delight in setting off fireworks.

“Annually we receive numerous calls of fireworks disturbances and injuries caused by these mini explosions. We encourage residents to supervise children and to celebrate responsibly,” Smith said. – SAnews.gov.za

Statutory rape of 13-year-old a ‘heinous crime’

Statutory rape of 13-year-old a 'heinous crime'

Deputy Minister of Police, Polly Boshielo, has condemned as a “heinous crime” the alleged statutory rape and subsequent impregnation of a 13-year-old child in Limpopo.

The Deputy Minister was in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Monday where 28-year-old Ditebogo Gololo, appeared on charges related to the incident.

Gololo is facing a charge of sexually grooming a minor and statutory rape.

“I hope this heinous crime does not happen again. The scourge of teenage pregnancy is very bad in this country. For the financial year under review, 2023/2024, a total of 29 150 gender-based violence and femicide perpetrators were arrested.

“Out of them, 556 accused were handed down life sentences, 480 sentenced between 10 and 20 years, and 998 sentenced between 1 and 9 years. In Limpopo, there has been a challenge of rape cases involving children, especially in the Seshego and Matlala policing areas.

“I have instructed SAPS in the province to implement a programme to address these social issues,” Boshielo said.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Gololo allegedly groomed the child after meeting at a mall in January this year, “until they became intimate in May 2024”.

“The minor only revealed the incident to her aunt after experiencing complications, and later in November 2024, medical tests confirmed she was eight months pregnant, thus ultimately giving birth to a baby boy on Christmas Day,” the NPA said.

Gololo was arrested a day after the child gave birth.

“The docket will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for directives. The matter is postponed for bail application and further investigations to 08 January 2025, at Seshego Magistrate's Court. Gololo is remanded in custody,” the statement concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Limpopo police arrest 25 for illegal mining and other transgressions

Twenty-five suspects have been arrested for various transgressions, including illegal mining in Limpopo, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

This as the SAPS’ Operation Vala Umgodi continues across the country.

In a statement on Sunday, the police said the 25 were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act, possession of illicit drugs, and involvement in illegal mining activities over the weekend.

“The operation was conducted between 28 and 29 December 2024 -which was a coordinated effort, together with South African National Defence Force. The operation was aimed at addressing illegal mining and related criminal activities that brings instability within the mining environments,” said the SAPS.

The suspects were arrested in various locations across the five Districts of Limpopo, for illegal possession of narcotics and unlawful mining.

Police also apprehended numerous undocumented foreign nationals who were contravening the Immigration Act.

Illicit drugs such as crystal meth, along with mining equipment including shovels and spades were seized.

In Mokopane, Waterberg District, eleven undocumented foreign nationals were arrested. In Maake, Mopani District, five individuals were arrested while in the  Capricorn District, six arrests were made within the area.

Additionally, the Sekhukhune District Task Team traced and arrested a 34-year-old suspect for assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH) in Groblersdal. Two suspects were also arrested for possession of suspected crystal meth and dagga in the Marble Hall policing area.

The other suspect was found in possession of cash which amounts to R3000-00 believed to be proceeds from the drugs.

“The arrested suspects will face charges under the Immigration Act, possession of illicit drugs, illegal mining, and other related charges,” said the police.

Meanwhile, government says a number of illegal miners, known as Zama Zamas, have voluntarily emerged from the disused mine shafts in Stilfontein in the North West, indicating that these individuals have the capability to exit the underground tunnels independently.

This is according to a statement issued by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.

“Their delayed emergence appears to be a tactic to evade arrest by law enforcement agencies. Contrary to claims that food underground ran out months ago, evidence suggests that the miners have had access to supplies until recently,” said NATJOINTS.

No load shedding implemented for nine months

No load shedding implemented for nine months

Eskom has now reached more than nine months without having to implement load shedding.

This, the energy utility said, marks a significant milestone in its “commitment to providing reliable electricity to South Africa”.

“As of [Friday] Eskom has successfully completed over…275 consecutive days...without implementing load shedding since 26 March 2024. This achievement underscores Eskom’s dedication to addressing the country’s energy challenges through its investment in the Generation Recovery Plan and enhanced maintenance protocols.

“Eskom continues to utilise the December summer break to increase planned maintenance activities to further improve the reliability of its generation fleet as many industries have shut down for this period, with maintenance averaging at ~8 000MW,” the power utility said.

Eskom explained that its Generation Recovery Plan has made significant improvements in performance “particularly by reducing unplanned outages by ~8.1% compared to the same period last year.”

“Additionally, there was a year-on-year diesel savings of R16.20 billion, which is about 65.1% less than the R24.89 billion spent during the same period last year. Diesel usage remains below the year-to-date budget.

“In August, Eskom shared its summer outlook for the period from 01 September 2024 to 31 March 2025, predicting a likely scenario of a load shedding-free summer, including the festive season, due to structural generation improvements. This outlook remains unchanged,” Eskom said. – SAnews.gov.za

Condolences for former US President Jimmy Carter

Condolences for former US President Jimmy Carter

President Cyril Ramaphosa has described former United States of America President Jimmy Carter as a compassionate leader and a champion of human rights following his passing at the weekend.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former United States President Jimmy Carter who we remember as an outstanding, compassionate leader and champion of human rights and peace globally,” he said in a post on X.

According to CNN, the former President passed away at the age of 100 in Georgia on Sunday.

In his reflection of the former President of the US, President Ramaphosa said Carter was an outspoken critic of the apartheid state at a time when the regime was trying to ingratiate itself with influential economies around the world and justify its inhumane policies.

“Among his many distinguished roles, President Carter holds a special place in our history as a member of The Elders, a collective of global leaders brought together on President Nelson Mandela’s 89th birthday in 2007 to be independent moral voices for peace and leadership.

“President Carter’s record includes his engagement in diverse peace negotiations around the world and his unequivocal categorisation of the denial of fundamental human rights and statehood to the people of Palestine as a manifestation of apartheid,” said President Ramaphosa on Monday.

He added that the former statesman justly deserved the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”.

“We celebrate his legacy, his extended lifetime and his enduring ideas. May his soul rest in peace,” said the President in his post. -SAnews.gov.za

Simelane to visit communities affected by Cape Town fires

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane will today oversee the delivery of building materials to communities affected by fires in Cape Town.

The Minister will be joined on her visit by Deputy Minister Tandi Mahambehlala where they will engage with informal settlements dwellers affected by the recent fire disaster.

They will also assess progress being made with regards to the provisions of the emergency housing guidelines - that is rebuild, relocation, restoration and repairs.

“Their programme will include a visit to the Wag ‘n Bietjie informal settlement; Nomzamo in Strand where a 30-year-old man lost his life due to smoke inhalation whilst they battled a fire that left more than 200 people displaced on the morning of Christmas Eve,” the Ministry of Human Settlements said ahead of Monday’s visit.

The Ministers’ visit is expected to get underway at 3pm at the Dunoon informal settlement.

Last week, the Ministers Western Cape MEC for Infrastructure, Tertius Simmers and MMC Carl Pophaim visited the informal settlements affected by fires.

In a social media post last week, City of Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis said that city’s Human Settlements staff are working with staff from the National Department of Human Settlements to deliver reconstruction kits to communities as soon as possible.

“We thank the National Department for their co-operation in making this as speedy as possible,” said the mayor at the time. -SAnews.gov.za

Hundreds arrested in Northern Cape on various charges

Police in the Northern Cape have arrested some 429 suspects during the weekly Safer Festive Season operations - a continuation of Operation Shanela.

According to a police statement, SA Police Service members arrested the suspects on a range of charges, including illegal possession of uncut diamonds, illicit mining, murder, rape, illegal dealing in liquor, dealing in drugs, undocumented persons, assaults, malicious damage to property, contravention of protection orders, house breaking and theft, theft out of motor vehicles and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Numerous vehicle control points and static roadblocks were conducted across the province on all national and secondary roads, during which 6368 vehicles were stopped and 16 988 persons were searched.

“Compliance inspections were executed at second-hand dealers and liquor premises. Mines, farms, formal and informal businesses were also visited. During the operations the police confiscated firearms, cellphones, dangerous weapons, large volumes of alcoholic beverages, mandrax, tik, dagga and money believed to be proceeds of crime,” the statement read.

Furthermore, a zero-tolerance approach will be taken this New Year’s Eve.

“The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, assured the public that operations will continue unabatedly during New Year celebrations and beyond.

“She reiterated that a zero-tolerance approach will be adopted and the abuse and misuse of alcohol will not be tolerated.  Crimes committed against women and children will be vigorously policed. Authorities will be on high alert at parks, taverns, social gatherings and pleasure resorts,” the statement said.

Communities are also urged to adhere to by-laws “pertaining to the discharging of fireworks and illegal spinning as all perpetrators will face the full might of the law”.

“Road safety will be prioritised and motorists are warned that they can expect to be detained if found transgressing the rules of the road. The authority of the state will be stamped down as we head into 2025,” the statement concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Law enforcement beefed up as the New Year approaches

Location: News

Law enforcement beefed up as the New Year approaches

The National Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called on motorists to drive with caution and respect the rules of the road as the new year approaches.

The corporation said stricter enforcement is in place as holidaymakers make their way across the country.

“Law enforcement will be tighter on the roads and around places of entertainment to ensure the safety of all road users on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and when holiday makers start travelling back to home after the festive season holidays.

“More than one million vehicles have been stopped and checked at various roadblocks throughout the country since the start of the festive season road safety campaign on 1 December. A total of 6470 people have been arrested from among others drunken driving, excessive speeding, driving without driving licences, reckless driving and overloading,” the RTMC said.

Furthermore, more than 120 pedestrians are among those that “have been arrested for jaywalking and the endangering the lives of other road users”.

Unroadworthy vehicles will also be taken off the road by traffic officials.

“Motorists are further called upon to ensure that their vehicles are in a roadworthy state before embarking on their journey back to industrial cities and public transport operators must ensure that they have proper permits to operate on the selected routes.

“[Some] 9309 vehicles have been discontinued and declare unfit to be operated on public roads after various were found when inspected and more than 5700 public transport vehicles were impounded to violation of operator permits,” the corporation said.

The RTMC issued the following safety tips:

  • Reduce speed and increase following distances: Wet roads and reduced visibility can lead to collisions. Drive slowly and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles.
  • Avoid driving in flooded areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, or low-lying areas.
  • Stay alert to strong winds: Exercise caution, particularly if driving high-sided vehicles, as winds may destabilise them.
  • Check weather and road updates: Keep informed of the latest weather forecasts and road conditions by listening to radio updates or using reliable apps.
  • Be prepared for lightning and hail: If caught in a thunderstorm, find a safe place to park and remain inside your vehicle. Avoid stopping under trees or power lines.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid heat exhaustion: Drivers should rest frequently in shaded areas and stay hydrated during long journeys, especially in areas with extreme heat conditions.

“Motorists are further advised to exercise extreme caution when driving in wet rainy conditions. Truck drivers, public transport operators, and long-distance travellers are urged to prioritise safety and stop at safe rest areas during adverse weather.

“The RTMC further appeals to all drivers to remain patient and cautious on the roads during this period. Severe weather can strike suddenly, and responsible driving is essential to avoid unnecessary incidents and loss of life,” the corporation said. – SAnews.gov.za

RTMC gets tough on unlawful motorists

Twenty-two motorists are set to appear in court in the new year on charges of bribery and corruption.

The 22 were arrested by members of the National Traffic Police for alleged bribery across various parts of Limpopo, said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in a statement.

“The motorists allegedly attempted to induce traffic officers to ignore violations of traffic rules by offering them money. Many of the motorists were caught driving without driving licences. They produced money to avoid arrest for their transgressions,” said the RTMC on Sunday.

The motorists are scheduled to appear in court next year on charges of bribery and corruption.

“The National Traffic Police have been deployed in Limpopo and other provinces to bolster efforts to enforce the law and reduce factors that contribute to road crashes and fatalities.”

Members of the public are urged to report acts of bribery and corruption to the Road Traffic Management Corporation by sending a WhatsApp on 083 2937989 or by calling (012) 999 5407. -SAnews.gov.za

Extra police vigilance on N1 following spiking incidents

Extra police vigilance on N1 following spiking incidents

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) are stepping up efforts to clamp down on crime on the N1, following a surge in spiking incidents on that stretch of road.

In a statement posted on social media, the City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety strongly condemned the criminal behaviour.

“The MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, is deeply outraged by the reckless criminal acts on the N1 North between the Soweto Highway and Maraisburg Off-ramps and the N1 South between Maraisburg and Rand Show Road Off-ramps.

“The deliberate placement of rocks on these routes has caused multiple accidents, jeopardizing the lives of innocent motorists. This is an attack on the safety and dignity of our residents.

“We have directed the…JMPD in partnership with the SAPS [to] act to decisively root out these criminal elements. Joint operations are underway across our freeways and highways, ensuring no road user is vulnerable. During this festive season, we prioritise the safety of every citizen and visitor traveling through Johannesburg,” the statement read.

The department added that equally troubling are “reports alleging that JMPD officers failed to assist a motorist who was nearly mugged in the same area” after the motorist’s tyres were spiked.

“Let it be clear: The department of Public Safety will not tolerate negligence or dereliction of duty by those entrusted to serve and protect. The Internal Affairs Unit has launched a full investigation to ensure that any officer found guilty of misconduct is held accountable.

“We encourage the community to play a role in ensuring safety by reporting emergencies or suspicious activities by contacting 082 060 0057 or 011 375 5911 immediately, and the Department of Public Safety is aware of the alarming rise in road spike incidents across Johannesburg and is dealing with it decisively to ensure the safety of all motorists.

“Lastly, as a department, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the safety and security of all residents. We will continue to lead with decisive action, ensuring that Johannesburg remains a city where justice and accountability prevail,” the statement concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Petrol, diesel prices to increase

Location: News

Petrol, diesel prices to increase

Holidaymakers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as they make their way back home following the announcement that all grades of petrol and diesel are expected to increase from New Year’s Day, this Wednesday.

The price of LP Gas is also expected to increase with a decrease in the cost of paraffin.

This was announced by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR).

The price adjustments for fuel, paraffin and gas are as follows:

  • Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): 19c increase.
  • Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): 12c increase.
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 7c increase.
  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 10c increase.
  • Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 9c decrease.
  • Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating paraffin: 13c decrease.
  • Maximum LPGas Retail Price: 13c increase.

This means a litre of petrol 95 ULP, which currently costs R21.47 in Gauteng, will now cost R21.59 a litre as of Wednesday.

At the coast, a litre of 95 petrol, which cost R20.68 in December, will now cost R20.80 a litre from January.

“The average Brent Crude oil price increased slightly from US$72.70 to US$72.78 during the period under review. The main contributing factors are the OPEC+ decision not to increase production in December and continued oversupply by non-OPEC producers amid low economic growth globally.

“The average international product prices of petrol followed the increasing trend of crude oil while the prices of middle distillates decreased slightly because of higher inventories for the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.

“These factors led to higher contributions to the basic fuel prices of petrol and diesel by 9.33 c/l and 2.93 c/l respectively and lower contributions to illuminating paraffin by 18.92 c/l.

“The Rand depreciated on average, against the US Dollar (from 17.93 to 18.11 Rand per USD) during the period under review when compared to the previous one. This led to higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel and Illuminating Paraffin by 10.58 c/l, 11.11 c/l and 10.90 c/l respectively,” the department explained. – SAnews.gov.za

Illegal miners voluntarily emerge from Stilfontein mine shafts

Location: News

Illegal miners voluntarily emerge from Stilfontein mine shafts

Government says a number of illegal miners, known as Zama Zamas, have voluntarily emerged from the disused mine shafts in Stilfontein, indicating that these individuals have the capability to exit the underground tunnels independently.

This is according to a statement issued by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.

“Their delayed emergence appears to be a tactic to evade arrest by law enforcement agencies. Contrary to claims that food underground ran out months ago, evidence suggests that the miners have had access to supplies until recently.

“Assertions that aid sent down is shared equally among miners are unverified. Government has not sanctioned any official aid deliveries to individuals engaged in illegal activities. Reports indicate that any supplies reaching the miners are controlled by underground syndicates, often leading to unequal distribution and exploitation.

“The notion that miners remain trapped solely due to police actions is misleading,” said the statement.

SAPS has implemented measures to secure the area and prevent further illegal activities, but designated exit points have been established to allow miners to surface safely and face due legal processes.

NATJOINTS said the miners possess the means to exit independently, as demonstrated by those who have surfaced in recent days.

“Government's stance is to uphold the rule of law; thus, while immediate aid is not provided to facilitate illegal activities, measures are in place to ensure the safety and humane treatment of individuals who choose to come above ground.

“Government acknowledges the presence of various narratives surrounding this issue. It is important to rely on verified information from official channels. SAPS and other government bodies are committed to transparency and will continue to provide accurate updates on the situation,” said government.

It said it remains steadfast in efforts to address illegal mining activities, which pose significant risks to both the individuals involved and the broader community. Operations such as "Vala Umgodi" ("Close the Pits") are ongoing to rehabilitate abandoned mines and prevent further unlawful exploitation.

Government is also working to tackle the underlying socio-economic issues that contribute to illegal mining, including unemployment and lack of economic opportunities.

“We cannot allow a situation where the government is held hostage. All court directives have been complied with thus far, including the allowed food supply on a daily basis.

“SAPS has previously indicated that it is working closely with all stakeholders involved in trying to get those illegal miners extracted from underground. The Stilfontein rescue operation that is being undertaken is not as easy as it seems; it is quite complex, with the depth of the shaft playing a major role in how this operation is carried out.

“Unlike the Sabie operation, in which the shaft is 150 meters deep, the Stilfontein shaft is 2 kilometers deep to where these illegal miners allegedly are, making it a very difficult and highrisk operation to undertake.

“The rescue team has recommended that the necessary resources and expertise must be acquired. The practicality and risks involved are also being taken into account. The liability involved is also a major factor. Police are not experts and can therefore not lead this rescue operation.”

Government said at this stage, the mine must acquire services to conduct the rescue operation, in which costs are involved.

“We are in possession of a quotation that indicates that there must also be a 100% upfront payment.

“It should be agreed upon that the government must approach this process with due diligence and the utmost care, taking into consideration the applicable supply chain management processes involved.

“These processes must be above board in line with relevant prescripts.”

Government urged all individuals involved in these activities to surface voluntarily and engage with law enforcement to ensure their safety and well-being.

Government said it was committed to upholding human rights and the rule of law in all its operations. – SAnews.gov.za

SA sends special envoy to Mozambique

The South African government says it remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and upholding regional stability, amid protests in Mozambique.

“Government has noted with concern the ongoing protests in parts of Mozambique and reports of individuals escaping from a maximum-security prison during this period of unrest. These developments have understandably raised apprehensions among South African citizens regarding the potential cross-border implications.

“South Africa remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and upholding regional stability,” said a statement issued by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.

NATJOINTS said it has intensified its operations along the South Africa-Mozambique border.

These measures aim to prevent and combat any opportunistic crimes that may arise as a result of the unrest, both during and after the protests.

“The Government of South Africa is actively engaging the Government of Mozambique at a bilateral level to address these concerns and explore sustainable solutions.

“Both nations are leveraging their strong diplomatic ties to ensure that appropriate measures are implemented to restore order and enhance security in the affected regions. These engagements reflect the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that underpin the relationship between South Africa and Mozambique,” said the statement.

Government said it recognises the interconnected nature of regional security and is determined to uphold its responsibilities in fostering peace and stability in Southern Africa.

“South Africa reaffirms its commitment to support Mozambique in restoring peace and stability in ensuring the safety of everyone.

“To demonstrate South Africa’s commitment towards finding an amicable solution to the impasse in Mozambique, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent Professor Sydney Mufamadi as a special envoy to engage all relevant stakeholders.”

Government urged citizens to remain calm and to refrain from spreading unverified information that may lead to unnecessary panic.

“The relevant authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide timely updates as new information becomes available. Citizens are encouraged to direct any concerns or inquiries to the appropriate channels to ensure accurate and constructive communication,” it said. – SAnews.gov.za

Emergency meeting in Eastern Cape following tragic death of 20 initiates

Location: News

Emergency meeting in Eastern Cape following tragic death of 20 initiates

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will today lead an emergency ministerial meeting in the Eastern Cape, amid a high number of initiates who have died in the province.

The Minister’s emergency visit follows 20 initiates losing their lives at various initiation schools.

“These deaths sent shockwaves across the country as confirmation of the unfortunate passing of initiates was publicised.

“We must not lose sight of the fact that these late initiates are human beings with loved ones. They also have the right to life like all of us. To this effect, it cannot be business as usual,” a statement read.

The department said it was committed to ensuring that this longstanding cultural practice was performed safely, restoring its dignity.

Ulwaluko or traditional male circumcision is an age-old rite of passage that marks the transition from boyhood to manhood in Xhosa culture.

The ritual is performed to instil social and moral values and to produce men who are responsible, hardworking and honest.

“We know that this has been practised for generations without the challenges we have seen recently.

“The visit of the Minister also confirms that culture does not kill, but it is those who are not following the norms and standards as contained within the Initiation Act who drag down the reputation of this cultural tradition.”

The Minister will visit the Amathole District Municipality which has experienced one of the highest number of initiation-related deaths.

During the visit, Hlabisa will meet the provincial and local government officials, the district initiation forum, provincial initiation committees and the broader communities.

The department acknowledged that the passing of the young men had left their families devastated.

“Therefore, this mass devastation caused by the passing of 20 initiates impacts and affects the whole nation and is tantamount to a disaster.

“We have lost lives. Therefore, we cannot go on as if it is business as usual. Something drastic must happen to protect our youth who undertake this important cultural and traditional journey.”

Additionally, the Minister has appealed for collective efforts to safeguard this ancient cultural practice from abuse, exploitation and possible extinction. – SAnews.gov.za
