President Ramaphosa to announce new National Executive
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce a new National Executive this evening, 30 June 2024, at 9pm.
The announcement, which will be in the form of a televised address to the nation, follows the inauguration of President Ramaphosa on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, which in turn followed the President’s election by the National Assembly on Friday, 14 June.
The new National Executive will constitute the seventh Democratic Administration as a Government of National Unity, comprising a diversity of political parties as an outcome of the National and Provincial Elections held on Wednesday, 29 May 2024.

Ministers to visit flood-stricken areas in E Cape
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thembi Nkadimeng and Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi, will visit areas devastated by floods on Tuesday in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Eastern Cape.
This is after parts of the Eastern Cape were flooded this week, with the most affected areas being the Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros.
“The floods have unfortunately resulted in the loss of lives, while others were rescued. The floods have also displaced several people after their homes were severely affected, with some being swept away,” a government statement read.
Government is currently assessing the extent of damage and is assisting the victims with humanitarian relief.
During the visit, the Ministers and Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane will provide direction about further government interventions.
“Government continues to urge communities to exercise caution and be extra vigilant, especially in areas prone to flooding, and follow the regular updates and warning messages from the South African Weather Service, as well as other authorities.”
The SABC reported that the number of people who have died because of floods in the Eastern Cape has risen to 10 after the body of a female, who went missing in the Rocklands area, was found yesterday afternoon.
According to the Eastern Cape CoGTA Department, the worst affected area in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is Kariega.
To date, over 500 people have been evacuated and placed in community halls.
The strong rains also damaged the road infrastructure, bridges, and electricity power stations.
The provincial department said the rains have destroyed the sewerage network in Kariega, resulting in blockage of stormwater drains.
Water infrastructure in KwaNobuhle is said to have also collapsed and the community does not have running water because of the flooding.
Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal government is on the ground providing humanitarian support and assisting families that have been displaced following heavy rains and strong winds that hit parts of the province on Monday evening.
This has wreaked havoc in different parts of the province, affecting five districts, including eThekwini metro, Ilembe, King Cetshwayo, Umzinyathi, Amajuba and Umkhanyakude District Municipalities.
According to officials, preliminary reports indicate that at least 11 people have died, with seven of them being from uThongathi in the north of eThekwini metro.
The other four fatalities were reported in Nquthu, Eshowe and KwaHlabisa.
In addition, over 55 people suffered minor to moderate injuries, and are receiving medical treatment in hospitals.
Dozens of people have been displaced and three temporary shelters have been established where the affected families are receiving humanitarian aid. – SAnews.gov.za

IEC invites citizens to pray for peaceful elections
The Electoral Commission (IEC) will today participate in a National Day of Prayer ahead of the 29 May 2024 National and Provincial Elections.
Organised by the South African Council of Churches (SACC), the IEC has called on citizens to join the prayer service that will take place on Sunday, 5 May 2024, at Grace Bible Church in Soweto, Johannesburg.
The commission said the event is part of the ongoing partnership with different sectors of society to ensure a successful Election Day.
“The service calls for a powerful moment of unity and prayer as we seek divine guidance for peaceful and safe elections,” the SACC said.
SACC Acting General-Secretary, Reverend Mzwandile Molo, said told the SABC that the council has committed to working hard to make sure the country’s elections are done peacefully and in a non-intimidatory manner since 1994.
“So, if there’s anybody who incites violence, that person needs all of us to ask them to refrain from that because the scars of violence that is caused by politics are too deep and they have not healed right now. We all want to make sure that we do not remind ourselves of the violence of the past,” said Molo.
The SACC is an association of affiliated Christian churches and organisations that come together in action for social justice.
As an instrument and servant of its members, the council said it was committed to expressing, through proclamation and programmes, the united witness of the church in South Africa, especially in matters of national debate.
“Let’s come together as one nation in prayer,” the SACC added.

Call for calm amid rumours of a Mahikeng shutdown
The North West provincial government has urged residents of Mahikeng and surrounding areas to remain calm and not panic following rumours of a shutdown taking place today, 17 April 2024.
Protest organisers have vowed to close roads leading to the Mahikeng central business district (CBD) due to the decay and lack of services, according to the SABC.
Meanwhile, the provincial government said no application to march has been made by organisers of the purported shutdown.
“While the provincial government respects the rights of any person to march and protest about any grievance, it maintains this should be done within the confines of the law.”
The North West government has since assured residents that measures have been put in place to ensure that the rule of law is enforced and that the safety of residents is prioritised.
In addition, the provincial government urged public servants to treat today as a normal working day, as security in all state buildings in Mahikeng will be intensified to ensure that government properties and employees are protected.
“The provincial government has also received assurance from the South African Police Services that no lawlessness will be tolerated, and action will be taken against those who impede on the rights of others, including threats to human life and property damage,” the statement read. – SAnews.gov.za

Kodwa welcomes ruling dismissing application by boxing promoters in high court
The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, has welcomed the high court judgment which threw out an application of the National Professional Boxing Promoters’ Association (NPBPA) to declare that the appointment of the Boxing South Africa (BSA) Accounting Authority is irregular and invalid.
The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday delivered a judgment dismissing with costs the NPBPA’s application based on lack of legal standing.
According to the SABC, the application was also seeking an order to stop BSA from sanctioning boxing tournaments until a legitimate board was appointed.
In December, the promoters successfully interdicted the BSA board appointed by Kodwa. The Minister then appointed Mandla Ntlanganiso in February as the Acting CEO and Accounting Authority, in terms of the Public Finance Management Act, to temporarily replace the board.
Tuesday’s ruling means Ntlanganiso will remain in his position until May 2024, when a full-time board will be appointed.
“The judgement marks a salutary corrective measure on the path to restoring stability and ethical governance at Boxing SA. For too long, Boxing SA has been bleeding as an institution, with athletes losing match time, and promoters and trainers losing their market share,” Kodwa said on Wednesday.
The Minister believes the court’s decision is an opportunity for all stakeholders in South African boxing to link and focus on the roadmap to reset and revitalise the sport in the country.
“I have repeatedly said that let’s box in the ring and not in the courts.”
“Let us focus, engage, and work together to build this sporting code that lies close to the hearts of millions of South Africans. Let us work together to revive South African boxing,” the Minister pleaded.
Reports state that the NPBPA was ordered to pay the respondents’ costs, including those of the Ministers of Sport, Arts and Culture and Finance, BSA, and Ntlanganiso.
They were also ordered to pay the costs of two counsels, including the Senior Counsel. – SAnews.gov.za

Arrests for violating traffic laws
More than 1 000 road users have been arrested and 900 vehicles were impounded in law enforcement operations conducted in all nine provinces since the start of the Easter holidays.
The arrests related to various offences, such as drunken driving, producing false driving documentation, driving recklessly, operating on the roads without driving permits and the overloading of both goods and passengers.
Vehicles were impounded mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga for violation of public transport operating permits.
A total of 75 961 vehicles were stopped and checked and 916 927 drivers were issued with traffic fines for various infringements.
One of the major concerns during this period was unroadworthy vehicles, and 274 vehicles with defects being discontinued.
“The Easter weekend is associated with increased traffic volumes as pilgrimages and holiday makers take advantage of the public holidays to visit family or go on vacation. However, this surge in traffic poses significant road safety challenges, with authorities often warning motorists to exercise caution due to the high volumes of vehicles on the roads.
“Increased traffic volumes were experienced on Thursday and Friday from approximately 10 am with [the] N1 North and N3 South recording an average of 2 000 vehicles passing through various tollgates per hour. The N4 East recorded 1 900, while N1 South recorded an average of 1 000 vehicles,” the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.
Meanwhile, South Africa and Botswana are finalising details to identify and repatriate the 46 victims and human remains of Botswana bus crash fatalities, which happened over the Easter long weekend in Limpopo.
“We will be guided by the people of Botswana, especially the families and the government to say how they prefer this to be done. Post-mortems will be conducted tomorrow. Pathologists will issue a notice then [the Department of] Home Affairs will issue death certificates. Then a funeral parlour will issue a cover letter, requesting the repatriation permit,” Limpopo Health MEC, Doctor Phophi Ramathuba, said on Monday in an interview with the SABC. –SAnews.gov.za

Accessing accurate public information

Through social media apps, websites, and other digital tools, the internet gives us a lot of ways to connect with each other. This makes information easy to find.
However, the ease with which we get information online makes it hard to determine how true it is. The COVID-19 pandemic is a great example of this challenge because knowledge spread very quickly through our phones and social media sites.
During this dark time, scary fake news spread very quickly, making it harder for people to get the right information and stay safe, which was bad for their health and made them less likely to trust others.
In order to fight fake news, the South African government set up many ways for people to easily get true and accurate information. This included the SA Coronavirus website, social media accounts, and regular updates for the whole country.
Lessons from the pandemic
Because of the pandemic, government learned that giving people easy access to reliable information gave them the tools they needed to make smart choices about how to protect their health.
Building on the success of spreading information widely during COVID-19, government has adopted a multi-media approach that uses all forms of media to give South Africans more power by giving them accurate information about problems facing the country, the government's solutions, and programmes meant to bring about change.
Government just recently set up two WhatsApp channels, governmentza and the PresidencyZA, that people can follow to get regular updates on things that affect everyone, like chances for legal education and work.
This adds to government’s social media platform GovernmentZA, which lets people get true information right away and talk to the government directly. People should follow these social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, WhatsApp, X, and YouTube, as well as government websites like https://www.gov.za, https://www.gcis.gov.za/, and https://www.thepresidency.gov.za/, to get accurate news about issues that affect the whole country.
The GCIS also has its own in-house news agency, SAnews (https://www.sanews.gov.za/) which provides regular news updates on matters of public concern, at no cost. In addition the GCIS launched a podcast, Vuk Talks to give people more access to information about government programmes. It’s on YouTube and Spotify.
Our online presence adapts to the changing needs of our citizens, but we also make sure that people who don’t have access to the internet can still get information.
The government tries to get accurate and reliable news to millions of people in rural areas and townships. Over the years Vuk’uzenzele newspaper has touched the lives of many people. It also brought the government to closer to the people through Izimbizo and partnerships with local community radio stations. From April 2024 on, the newspaper will only be available online, but its articles will still be useful to everyone in South Africa. We have also partnered with SABC 2 on the 13-part series Citizens Connect in an attempt to educate more citizens.
The value of accurate information
All of these online platforms let people to easily get reliable information directly from the government about their lives, our country, and the world we live in. Reliable information is essential to make democracy work. The opposite is equally true: inaccurate information, often a result of fake news, can be dangerous to democracy, especially during big national events such as elections.
As the seventh national and provincial elections get closer, people are being warned to be careful of fake news online, especially since new technologies make it hard to tell the difference between fact and fiction.
With the rise of deep fake content, fake content can seem credible. Dishonest people use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make fake videos, pictures, and audio recordings of other people. Public figures, such as our political leaders, are often the targets of these attacks.
Be vigilant at all times
Government urges every citizen to be wary of falling victim to fake news. Pay close attention to face features and lip movements that don’t match up on videos because that can be a sign of deep fake content. If in doubt, verify the information you receive via trustworthy information sources (such as government platforms). That’s how you can learn the truth and make smart decisions about your future.
If you use social media and websites as sources of information, make sure that they are real. It’s easy to miss fake accounts or profiles because their names sound a lot like real ones. So, double-check the writing of the profiles and websites you follow.
Every South African needs to make sure that the news they spread comes from reliable sources. Let’s all stay alert all times to avoid being duped by fake news. Let’s all play our part to make our democracy strong. Let’s fight disinformation.

Several parts of KZN classified disaster areas following floods
Several flood-stricken parts of KwaZulu-Natal have been classified disaster areas by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister, Thembi Nkadimeng.
The move will enable government to access additional funding from provincial and national departments to start repairs as soon as possible.
According to the SABC, the disaster areas include Ilembe, Ugu and UMzinyathi municipalities and the hardest-hit eThekwini Metro and uThukela District, which suffered about R2 billion worth of damage.
“Nkadimeng says the classification is done while processing for the declaration is underway,” the public broadcaster explained.
Heavy rains have ravaged KwaZulu-Natal since mid-December, spilling over to the new year.
Ladysmith, which falls under UThukela District, has recorded 26 fatalities due to inclement weather during the festive season.
Meanwhile, the Minister also emphasised the need to find a lasting solution for the flooding of the Ladysmith Central Business District (CBD) by channelling water towards preservation dams or catchment areas to avoid flooding.
Nkadimeng led a multidisciplinary intergovernmental team on a visit to the uThukela District Municipality, specifically in the Alfred Duma Local Municipality on Friday.
The Minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister Parks Tau and KZN CoGTA MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi.
The leaders engaged various stakeholders from across all sectors of society representing a wide range of communities.
“The engagements and the assessment showed the devastation caused by flooding, especially on lives and livelihoods which has resulted in extensive damages to properties and critical infrastructure collapse leaving affected families homeless.”
The department believes that the impact of natural disasters is made worse by the ongoing impact of climate change, which has brought unprecedented weather patterns.
“The Minister emphasised the need for all role players including communities to ensure better-integrated planning to mitigate the impact of such adverse natural disasters.
“She made it clear that disaster risk reduction and adaptability are the only way to reduce the impact of climate change,” CoGTA said.
Nkadimeng also appreciated the ongoing work and urged that other additional planned interventions in the municipality geared to improving mitigation against floods be accelerated.
The visit by the Minister, the department said, is an expression of government’s commitment to elevating integrated disaster management and the promotion of risk-averse behaviour among communities in keeping with the ethos of a caring government.
“She advised that government through the Disaster Management Centre, will assist to mobilise resources to rebuild and rehabilitate the damages to infrastructure.”
The Minister also conveyed her sincere condolences to all who lost their loved ones as a result of the recent heavy rains.
She also took the time to thank communities who assisted those who were displaced by floods.
“The selfless and compassionate actions by ordinary members of our communities and civil society organisations in support of humanitarian aid efforts including search and rescue as well as search and recovery symbolises the true meaning of a caring nation that South African is. We are immensely grateful to everyone for pulling together and showing Ubuntu,” Nkadimeng said. – SAnews.gov.za

Government empowers citizens throught tv programme
Government has packaged a television programme to empower, inform and educate citizens regarding initiatives that can improve their lives by profiling its programmes.
“We are giving voices to communities. We are sharing our content with the broader communities in this country. We are giving ordinary citizens an opportunity to talk about their daily experiences,” Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Chief Director: Communication Service Agency, Neli Shuping, said in Pretoria on Thursday.
Shuping was addressing a special screening for a 13-episode Advertiser Funded Programme (AFP) called Citizens Connect, which will be flighted on SABC 2 starting on Thursday, 18 January 2024 at 20:30.
Repeats will be played on Fridays from 12:00 – 12:30 and it will be available on the SABC Plus streaming platform.
The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said the collaboration with SABC 2 was testament to government’s commitment to reaching a diverse audience and delivering impactful content.
“This is a massive milestone for the GCIS and it is a significant project that will be flighted on one of the biggest platforms, which is the SABC. The latest research on television advertisements shows that the engagement on ads from viewers has decreased, so having a programme like this is monumental as it provides an opportunity to communicate government messages,” Shuping said.
Citizens Connect is a social reality programme featuring government content, re-enactments and discussions on matters relating to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), anti-corruption and the Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan (ERRP).
The programme is aimed at encouraging active citizenry, inspiring change while informing and profiling government programmes. The choice of SABC 2 as a channel was informed by government’s efforts to engage and inform the public through a platform that has a wide audience and reaches many households across South Africa.
“We call on all South Africans across all spheres of life to follow and tune into SABC 2 from Thursday, 18 January – 22 March 2024 at 20:30, to follow and engage on the 13 episodes of Citizens Connect, which will significantly touch on various interventions and experiences of citizens with government on issues that are essential to their lives. One of the episodes focuses on entrepreneurship and the government programmes that are intended to assist business owners with funding and business development.
The episode features two entrepreneurs who share their journeys in business and how they have navigated challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing load shedding.
Communications Manager for the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Lwazilwaphesheya Khoza, informed viewers about the Voucher Programme, which range from R6 600 to R19 800. The voucher is used to purchase business support services from approved service providers.
She suggested that entrepreneurs could use the vouchers to buy inverters or generators to help keep the lights on during load shedding.
There is no contribution fee required for young entrepreneurs to participate in the Voucher Programme. Each registered entity is entitled to a maximum of two vouchers as per business development phase.
Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, who was interviewed at the special screening, shared information about government programmes aimed at assisting entrepreneurs. – SAnews.gov.za

Call to tune into Citizens Connect
Government has called on all South Africans to watch a programme on SABC 2 that will feature storytelling and engaging content that inspires a collective shift towards an informed and engaged society.
“We call on all South Africans across all spheres of life to follow and tune into SABC 2 from Thursday, 18 January – 22 March 2024 at 8:30pm, to follow and engage on the 13 episodes of Citizens Connect, which will significantly touch on various interventions and experiences of citizens with government on issues that are essential to their lives,” Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Acting Director-General Nomonde Mnukwa said.
Citizens Connect is a social reality program featuring government content, re-enactments and discussions on matters relating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), anti-corruption and the Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan (ERRP).
The GCIS will launch a 13 episode Advertiser Funded Programme (AFP) called Citizens Connect on SABC 2 on Thursday.
“This collaboration with SABC 2 is a testament to government’s commitment to reaching a diverse audience and delivering impactful content,” GCIS said.
South Africans can follow all 13 episodes on SABC 2 from the day of its launch up until the end of all episodes every Thursday at 8:30pm, with repeats on Fridays from 12:00 – 12:30 and it will be available on the SABC Plus streaming platform. – SAnews.gov.za
