Experts urged to add their voice on water and climate issues

Experts urged to add their voice on water and climate issues

Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, David Mahlobo, has implored academia and global experts in research and science to prioritise major water, environment and climate change issues facing the entire global community.

Mahlobo made the call at the International Conference on Water and Environmental Sustainability, currently underway in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

The two-day conference which began on Monday, is organised by the University of Zululand in collaboration with the Changán University in China.

The conference presents a distinguished forum for global experts, including researchers, scientists, academics, industry representatives and students to engage in scholarly debate and knowledge exchange.

It is also used to address the ongoing water issues in South Africa, serving as a global platform for experts to discuss and find solutions for pressing challenges related to water scarcity, quality, and management in South Africa.

Addressing delegates on Monday, Mahlobo said the issues of environment and climate change have not been given the priority they deserve.

Mahlobo highlighted challenges, including population growth and migration, which have negatively impacted water availability to the people around the world, and the environment.

He said many countries have not properly planned for population growth and migration which have an impact on the sustainability of water and the environment.

“I therefore urge you that, in your discussions, you must come up with resolutions on how we deal with these issues especially around the finite resource of water. We call on you as the experts in your respective fields to raise your voices with information and knowledge to those in authority,” Mahlobo said.

University of Zululand Vice-Chancellor, Professor Xoliswa Mtose, noted that the conference is held at a time when the world is grappling with a myriad of interconnected issues elaborated in the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She said this has generated a lot of research and debate among the academia to galvanise national and global development on issues of water and environment.

“The collaboration between the University of Zululand and Changán University in China is on knowledge sharing aimed at addressing the challenges of developments in the water and sustainability as depicted in the Sustainable Development Goals framework.

“Therefore, the research papers to be delivered here today will reflect on the national, continental and global footprint as far as water and environmental issues are concerned,” Mtose said.

The scholars and academics at the conference indicated that the outcomes of the conference will not only influence the global versatile issues of water and environmental sustainability, but also enable them to enhance collaborations and knowledge sharing. – SAnews.gov.za

Local government called to be responsive to community needs

Local government called to be responsive to community needs

KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has urged local government office bearers to be responsive to the needs of communities or face the consequences from the electorate.

Speaking at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) KZN Sustainable Governance and Accountability Symposium in Durban last week, Buthelezi underscored the importance of sustainable governance and innovative solutions to meet the challenges facing municipalities throughout the province.

Buthelezi pointed out the complexities confronting municipalities, including climate change, financial limitations, and the imperative for enhanced service delivery.

He advocated for a unified approach to governance that is rooted in sustainability and accountability, which he believes is essential for long-term development and resilience.

“Our municipalities are the cornerstone of our communities, and their effectiveness in service delivery is vital for the welfare of our citizens. The current challenges necessitate a re-evaluation of our governance methods and the adoption of new strategies,” Buthelezi stated.

The MEC said the financial model for municipal funding ought to be reassessed, especially considering the recent veld fires that resulted in 15 fatalities last month. This, he said, demonstrates the urgent need for municipalities to be better equipped for such disasters.

He emphasised the importance of revising the financial support structures for local governments to ensure their preparedness for future challenges.

Buthelezi further praised the joint efforts of all parties involved in promoting accountability and transparency in municipal governance.

He encouraged mayors and senior officials to persist in these endeavours, reminding them that sustainable governance is an ongoing process that demands consistent commitment.

“The prosperity of our municipalities relies on our collective capacity to collaborate, innovate and maintain accountability. Our primary objective is to forge a brighter future for the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” Buthelezi said.

Cabinet welcomes ICJ advisory on Occupied Palestinian Territories

Cabinet welcomes ICJ advisory on Occupied Palestinian Territories

Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says South Africa’s Cabinet has welcomed an advisory by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the “legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories”.

Ntshavheni was addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing on Thursday.

The ICJ advisory affirmed that Israel’s continued presence in the territories is unlawful under international law.

“The judgement creates an additional legal obligation for all States to end complicity in Israel’s illegal actions and to act to ensure respect for international law.

“South Africa was amongst 49 United Nations (UN) member States that delivered a statement on the matter to the ICJ in February 2024,” Ntshavheni said.

Elsewhere on the continent, the Minister said Cabinet had noted unrest in Kenya and Nigeria.

“Cabinet raised concerns with the continuing unrests in Kenya and Nigeria, and urged all parties to find urgent solutions to the plight of citizens with the high cost of living, which South Africa is not spared from,” she said.

AGOA Forum

On matters relating to the annual African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum held in July, the Minister said Cabinet was “appraised of the successful participation of South Africa’s delegation” at the forum held in the United States of America (USA).

She said this was a positive confirmation of good bilateral relations between South Africa and the USA.

“South Africa continues to advance a case for the renewal of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, which expires in 14 months, and supports calls by African Trade Ministers for the US government to do away with the annual reviews of AGOA,” she said.

UK elections

Turning to elections in the United Kingdom, Ntshavheni said Cabinet congratulated the United Kingdom on their recent elections.

“Cabinet once more congratulated Prime Minister Sir Keith Starmer of the United Kingdom and the Labour Party in their victory in the recent general elections. South Africa stands ready to work with the government of the United Kingdom to increase trade and partnership.

“Government will continue to monitor developments in other countries that are also holding elections this year,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za
