Minister Ramokgopa commits to finding ‘enduring, lasting solution’ to rising electricity costs

Location: News

Minister Ramokgopa commits to finding 'enduring, lasting solution' to rising electricity costs

Minister of Energy and Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has moved to assure South Africans that the department is committed, together with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and municipalities, to finding an enduring solution to the rising cost of electricity in South Africa.

The Minister was addressing a media briefing on Monday morning.

“There’s been an exponential rise in the cost of electricity. Our electricity pricing plan needs to kick in and that’s the primary preoccupation of the work of the ministry now working with Eskom; working with municipalities and working with SALGA.”

Ramokgopa addressed some initiatives by municipalities, which have not been well received by communities. He cited the example of a “surcharge” (also known as a network fee).

“We really don’t want to engage publicly on the merits of whether the R200 [surcharge] is necessary or not. What we want to do is to find a more enduring and robust solution to this problem,” he said.

The Minister added that discussions with SALGA had already begun during the sixth administration.

“There’s an appreciation that it’s important that we pull together. This situation is untenable. Communities are getting more and more enraged [and] people just can’t afford the cost of electricity.

“As the ministry, together with the Deputy Minister, we have taken a view that we will not fold our arms although that domain… is the exclusive purview of local authorities. Municipalities rightfully say that it’s their domain but we are agreed with SALGA that we are going to resolve this problem domestically,” he said.

Ramokgopa said in finding solutions, the role of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) is indispensable.

“As an independent authority, they’ve got the duty to protect the consumer, they’ve got a duty to interrogate the proposed tariff increases from Eskom and also from municipalities. So what we’re going to do is not to pressure Nersa but to work with Nersa.

“We are going to insist on a Nersa framework… that takes care of the interests of the poor and the marginalised so that we don’t deny them access to electricity. Protect the interests also of the affluent because we can’t get to a situation where the pricing structure is such that it becomes unaffordable over time but also protects industries… that don’t become competitive as a result of the pricing structure.

“We will work with the municipalities. We know what you are going through and it is our intention to resolve this question,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Call for inclusion of young professionals in finding solutions to water challenges

Call for inclusion of young professionals in finding solutions to water challenges

The National Water and Sanitation Youth Indaba has thrust into the spotlight the inclusion of young professionals in research and innovation to improve the water sector.

The Department of Water and Sanitation, in conjunction with its entity in Limpopo, Lepelle Northern Water, hosted the Indaba under the theme: “Actively embracing the socio-economic gains of our democracy” last week.

Addressing the young professionals, Lepelle Northern Board Chairperson, Dr Nndweleni Mphephu, emphasised the significance of the youth’s active participation in research and innovation in the sector.

“As many might be aware of the challenges facing the water sector, which are increasingly being exacerbated by the impact of climate change, I urge you all to invest your brilliant young and sharp minds into research and to find long lasting solutions that could steer the sector to new heights,” Mphephu said.

The Department’s Chief Director responsible for Intergovernmental Relations, Sector Transformation and Provincial Governance, Petunia Ramunenyiwa emphasised the department’s commitment to the inclusion of young professionals, as a means to finding innovative solutions to address challenges faced by the sector.

“This Indaba is one of the programmes of the Department of Water and Sanitation that is very close to my heart, and it is by no means just a talk shop but a platform for engagement and exchange of knowledge and technical expertise that will improve the sector’s governance and transformation,” Ramunenyiwa said.

The indaba undertook discussions that provided opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and technical expertise aimed at improving the sector’s governance and transformation.

These included discussions on understanding national water and sanitation issues and government priorities, providing youth with information, opportunities, and technical resources available within the sector, as well as encouraging community involvement in the sector and establishing partnerships with the private sector, civil society and other stakeholders, among others.

To give a first-hand account of the operations of water testing and water treatment, the department and Lepelle Northern Water led a guided tour of the Ebenezer Water Treatment Plant, which mainly treats water abstracted from Ebenezer Dam and supplies to Polokwane Local Municipality and surrounding areas.

An excursion was also undertaken to the University of Limpopo’s water laboratory to explore the analytical methods used to conduct water quality analysis.

The laboratory is among the country's best and most advanced technologies, which use methods, including inductively coupled plasma to analyse heavy metals in water samples.

The National Water and Sanitation Youth Indaba was attended by more than 400 participants in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector from various backgrounds, including unemployed individuals, professionals, entrepreneurs, young professionals and civil society organisations.

The four-day Indaba was held in Polokwane, in Limpopo from 22-25 July 2024.

Among the issues discussed were the department’s youth strategy with a special focus on innovations and entrepreneurship, challenges and opportunities in South Africa's water and sanitation sector, South Africa's water issues in the global context, as well as education and career opportunities within the sector. – SAnews.gov.za

Concern over labour inequality

Location: News

Concern over labour inequality

The Labour Ministers of South Africa, Brazil and Spain have expressed concern that labour inequality remains an unmet challenge in many societies across the world.

“The only way to address this challenge properly is to abandon traditional models and responses, such as those favouring deregulation and market-based solutions, that have already been proven not to work and to accept that an expansive social response must be consensual and shared.

"Thus, in an expression of strengthened cooperation from three different continents, the Labour Ministers of Brazil, South Africa and Spain seek to advance towards a fairer distribution of the products of labour at a global level, adopting a common approach to tackling this problem that reflects our collective commitment to expanding labour rights the world over,” said the Ministers in a joint statement on Friday.

Luiz Marinho is Minister of Labour and Employment of Brazil and South Africa’s Minister of Employment and Labour is Nomakhosazana Meth.

Yolanda Díaz is the Second Vice-President and Minister of Labour and Social Economy of Spain.

The Ministers comments come on the occasion of the G20 Labour Ministers’ Meeting in Fortaleza.
The three leaders said the decline in labour share has been observed in many of the world’s economies, particularly since the wave of neo-conservatism in the 1980s.

The term "labour share" refers to the proportion of national income allocated to workers in the form of labour compensation, as opposed to that going to capital owners. The decline means that a smaller share of economic income is reaching workers, with most of it being distributed as returns to capital.
They said the undesired effects of a digital transition at the service of the few, labour flexibility and deregulation policies, and painful and ineffective austerity measures are just some of the causes behind this worrying trend.

“Such developments sometimes result in the delocalisation of production, in the absence of social dialogue and trade union participation, in the growing precariousness of working conditions, in an imbalance in collective bargaining that gives rise to low salaries or to fiscal policies that prioritize capital over work, or restrict natural growth in salaries.  Neither Brazil, South Africa nor Spain is unaffected by these trends.”

In Brazil, the recovery of the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic has been underscored by positive milestones, including robust growth of gross domestic product (GDP) and improvements in employment metrics.

Despite these positive results, enduring challenges persist within the Brazilian labour market. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Brazil exhibited very slight productivity growth between 2015 and 2023 (an annual average of 0.1%), while real wages fell 6.9 % in 2023.

South Africa’s labour market is also a prime example of declining labour share. Real wages have shown significant fluctuations, failing to keep pace with steady productivity growth.

“This has led to a situation where workers are not proportionally benefiting from the wealth they help create. The volatility of real wage growth compared to productivity underscores the disparity, which has been further exacerbated by shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely impacted economic growth, job stability, and both productivity and wage levels, leading to declining living standards and economic inequality for many South Africans.”

These disruptions highlight the vulnerability of workers' livelihoods and contribute to widening labour inequality.

In Spain, productivity growth over the past few decades has been sluggish, with certain significant exceptions such as the upturn seen in 2022. However, salaries have grown at a considerably lower rate than corporate profit.

Overcoming challenges

“In order to expand labour rights, our countries must overcome at least four fundamental challenges. Firstly, we must continue to raise wages. Real wages are growing at a far slower pace than productivity. As we have already demonstrated, abandoning neoliberalism and embracing policies aimed at increasing labour compensation —and in particular the legal minimum wage— contributes decisively to ensuring that productivity gains are distributed to workers, reducing inequality and the scourge of the gender pay gap. We are committed to doing what we know to work.”

The Ministers said that while substantial progress has been made in terms of equality and diversity in the world of work, there are major challenges that must still be overcome in order to ensure that all people —irrespective of their gender, race, sexual orientation or gender identity— enjoy equal opportunities, fair treatment and decent working conditions.

“Thirdly, the digital transition must be just, and workers’ individual and collective rights must be safeguarded throughout. We must make certain that digitalisation is placed at the service of decent work and not the other way around, ensuring that the use of technology makes human work less onerous.

“Fourthly and lastly, we must combine our efforts to strengthen collective bargaining, halting, once and for all, the continuing decline in its coverage rate across the world. In this regard, we have trust in social dialogue as a powerful tool for mutual understanding and collaboration and thus as a means of achieving better living and working conditions.”

“This is why, today, the Labour Ministries of Brazil, South Africa and Spain —reaching across the traditional and antiquated North-South divide— have agreed to establish a permanent and strengthened framework of collaboration and exchange on social and labour matters between our countries.”

According to the Ministers, the framework will guide policies in defence of increasing labour participation to ensure that workers receive a just share in national wealth.

“In short, Brazil, Spain and South Africa will advance towards a new labour international, a global alliance that is fully aware that the major challenges to be overcome —the climate crisis, rising inequality, the erosion of democracies— must be tackled by expanding labour rights, and not by cutting them,” said the Ministers in the joint statement. -SAnews.gov.za

Mashatile says the GNU is working towards bettering people’s lives

Mashatile says the GNU is working towards bettering people’s lives

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has once again assured citizens that the government of national unity (GNU) is working towards developing a common programme to create a better, more equal, and a more just South Africa.

“For us to reach our objective, the National Development Plan 2030 goals remain the central pillar to guide the development approach, which will inform the outcomes to be achieved in this administration,” he said on Friday.

He announced that in the next five years, the GNU will focus on strategic priorities, including creating inclusive economic growth and job creation, maintaining and optimising the social wage, and building a capable ethical and developmental State.

In addition, the seventh administration said it would focus on fixed capital investment, industrialisation, job creation, and the transformation of people’s lives.

“We remain intentional in investing in people through education, skills development, and providing quality healthcare. We want to change our communities’ spatial outlook by building inclusive cities and providing them with services,” he said on Friday.

The Deputy President was speaking at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in Auckland Park, delivering a keynote address on the second day of the conference co-hosted by the UJ and the National School of Government (NSG).
The second-in-command used the platform to call upon all sectors of society to work with the State to ensure it was stable, efficient and an effective democracy.

In addition, he described the GNU as parties behind a united agenda.

National dialogue

“We have now set our sights on deepening this initiative by engaging in a substantive national dialogue as proposed by the President.”

According to the Deputy, the national dialogue aims to initiate fresh conversations that tackle relevant and unresolved issues that affect most South Africans, particularly the impoverished.

Economic transformation

He told attendees that developing a solid strategy for economic transformation should be at the centre of the dialogue and believes that the discussion will have a positive effect on poverty, inequality, and unemployment levels.

The Deputy President pleaded with the guests to provide solutions that would harness the potential for South Africa to become the world’s “finest” civilisations.

“I firmly believe that our nation possesses sound policies, yet we struggle with their execution due to a deficiency in accountability. I believe that accountability is essential for successful implementation.
“Our motto now is to strategically put our policies into action.”

He is of the view that to deliver results, South Africa must invest in devising a workable plan and be more meticulous in its implementation.

Democracy

As South Africa continues to reflect on 30 years of democracy, he urged people to remember those who gave their lives and fought for freedom, equality, and justice.

While there are still challenges, he reminded attendees that since democracy, South Africa has made significant strides in overcoming divisions of the past, demonstrating remarkable progress in social transformation.

“Let us draw inspiration from our collective journey and utilise it to propel us towards a better future.”

International guest speaker and renowned expert in public administration and management, Dr Ra’ed BenShams, said regardless of the form of government, the ultimate goal must be to serve the people.

He used the analogy of the formation of a new river system through the merging of multiple streams, symbolising the creation of a new government coalition.

He discussed the importance of public sector reform in addressing inequality and building social cohesion.

The expert also offered a fresh perspective on South Africa’s past, present, and future, emphasising the need for unity and hope for a brighter future.

BenShams also stressed the importance of effective communication and collaboration with different communities to ensure efficient service delivery.

“We must be willing to be tolerant of the different values and principles forming our different cultures. We strive to do so and embrace all necessary actions because our paramount responsibility is to provide clean water to our people,” said BenShams. – SAnews.gov.za

Africa Data Centres announces additional 6MW capacity now live in Cape Town

Location: News
Africa Data Centres

Africa Data Centres (www.AfricaDataCentres.com), a business of Cassava Technologies, a pan-African technology group, has announced it is expanding its CPT1 facility in Cape Town.

This expansion shows the data centre giant adding three new state-of-the-art halls in new areas on the campus and adds another 6MW of IT load, effectively doubling its current capacity. The new expansion was implemented with support from the United States through an up to $300 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to Africa Data Centres.

According to Hardy Pemhiwa, President & Group CEO of Cassava, “This expansion by Africa Data Centres is in response to the increasing demand for co-location capacity in South Africa. Not only is Cape Town the second largest economy in South Africa, but it is also the de facto software and technology hub in Southern Africa.”

The company is seeing tremendous growth in the data centre market in South Africa generally, as both national and international cloud and IT service providers seek to expand their footprints in the region.

In terms of size, the expansion adds 1000 racks of white space or the space available for customers to lease, although the physical site is significantly larger than that. It is made up of two more colocation data halls and one hyperscale hall.

The additional halls are built in the cutting-edge modular design pioneered by Africa Data Centres, which enables rapid scalability and a modern design that allows the facility to be populated as and when required to suit the needs of the customer.

Pemhiwa says this would not have been possible without the support of the Ministry of ICT, Western Cape Provincial Government and the Western Cape Department of Economic Development. “I would like to acknowledge their ongoing support, as we expand our data centre facilities in South Africa.”

The new halls feature the same cutting-edge security standards and focus on the elements that matter most to clients, including scalability, flexibility, and energy efficiency, to bring world-class, affordable solutions to all its clients in the area. This data centre is highly flexible and designed to accommodate different and evolving customer demands.

Additionally, this data centre boasts hybrid cooling technology capable of handling both air cooling and liquid cooling. Despite its versatility, no compromises were made on efficiency. It is one of the most efficient and sustainable data centres ever built in South Africa. It is powered by renewable energy, boasts a Water Usage Effectiveness of 0 due to no water consumption for the IT infrastructure, and has an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness rating as well.

The Africa Data Centres' CPT1 facility is at the forefront of pioneering the use of wheeled solar power in the market. This innovation is enabled through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed in March last year with Distributed Power Africa, part of the Cassava Technologies group. Africa Data Centres is the first company to successfully implement this groundbreaking technology in Africa, marking it the continent's first project of its kind.

“The introduction of wheeled solar power at the CPT1 facility offers significant benefits to our' customers, providing a truly sustainable data centre solution. As the demand for data continues to skyrocket across Africa, a continent where power supply is often intermittent, the need for reliable, cost-effective, and green power has never been more critical,” said Finhai Munzara, Interim CEO of Africa Data Centres.

By harnessing renewable energy, he says the CPT1 facility not only ensures consistent power supply but also supports sustainable operations, helping customers achieve their environmental goals. “Our state-of-the-art facility reduces reliance on non-renewable energy sources, setting a new standard for sustainability in the data centre industry.”

Munzara adds that Cape Town is an excellent location for colocation facilities as it is a stone's throw away from all the submarine cable landing stations. In addition, the Cape Town facility houses the Cape Town Internet Exchange (CINX), which makes multi-region peering more accessible, efficient, and easy to manage. This also facilitates direct connections between networks, enabling data to flow more efficiently and reducing latency, giving our users a faster, more responsive online experience.

In ending, Munzara says the expansion increases the capacity of the company's data centres in South Africa and it is an integral part of its investment plans to deliver several additional data facilities across the continent.

Department works to secure water for all

Location: News

Department works to secure water for all

The Ministry and Department of Water and Sanitation, under the new administration, has committed to continue to ensure the implementation of all water projects without delay, and improved water and sanitation services.

Giving an update on the progress made in the water projects, which were previously delayed, Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Wisani Mavasa said in order to ensure water security,  government is focusing on investing in additional national water resource infrastructure. This includes building awareness of the need to use water sparingly, and improving municipal water and sanitation services.

Mavasa acknowledged that in the past, water projects have been subjected to unacceptable delays.

However, good progress has since been made in recent years in unblocking and accelerating the delayed projects.

She highlighted that there are currently 14 major national water resource infrastructure projects valued at more than R100 billion, which are in different stages of implementation around the country.

Among the projects which have been unblocked, include the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase Two, uMkhomazi Water Project and the raising of the wall of the Hazelmere Dam in KwaZulu Natal, construction of Ntabelanga Dam on the uMzimvubu River in the Eastern Cape.

This also includes the raising of the Clanwilliam Dam wall in Western Cape, the Giyani Water Supply Project in Limpopo, and the Loskop Regional Bulk Water Supply Project in Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

“In addition to unblocking and accelerating these projects, Parliament recently passed the National Water Resource Infrastructure Agency Bill, which will result in the establishment of an agency with a balance sheet which will enable substantially more funds to be raised for investment in national water resource infrastructure,” Mavasa said.

Water supply disruptions

Mavasa noted an increase in water supply disruptions in Gauteng and in eThekwini, which has resulted in hardship for residents.

According to the department, the demand for water in both areas is largely due to population growth.

The growth in demand was anticipated by planners, and new national water resource infrastructure projects were planned to meet it, unfortunately, the start of the projects was delayed.

“The new Polihali Dam and associated infrastructure, which is part of Phase Two of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, was due to be completed in 2019 to enable additional water to be supplied to the Integrated Vaal River System, which in turn is the main source of water for Gauteng.

“This project was unblocked, and the main contracts were all awarded in October 2022 and construction is now fully underway and is due to be completed by 2028.

“Similarly, the start of the uMkhomazi project to supply additional water to eThekwini and surrounding municipalities was delayed by nine years, due to concerns about its affordability in terms of the tariffs that would have to be charged to the residents of eThekwini. The affordability problem was resolved in 2023 with the approval by National Treasury of an application by DWS, with the support of the Presidential Infrastructure Fund, for a blended finance solution for the funding of the project which made the tariff more affordable,” she explained.

Among the solutions reached included a 25% interest-free loan and a 25% grant from the national fiscus, and this enabled the eThekwini Municipal Council to approve the water supply agreement on 31 January 2024.

The department has now started to raise the finance for the project and to commence with implementation. Work on the design of the dam and tunnel for the uMkhomazi project has started.

The department also noted the delays in a project to raise the Hazelmere Dam wall to further increase water supply to eThekwini Municipality and surrounding areas in KwaZulu-Natal, which started in 2011. This was due to contractual disputes between the department and the main contractor.

“The contract with the main contractor was terminated in 2018, resulting in a halt to the project. This was resolved in 2021, and the project was completed in 2023.”

Ntabelanga and Clanwilliam Dam upgrades

The department further noted that the construction of Ntabelanga Dam on a tributary of the uMzimvubu River in the Eastern Cape, which was planned to provide additional water for domestic and irrigation use was delayed because the department was unable to successfully motivate for a budget to be allocated to the project.

“The department resolved this blockage in 2023, by reconfiguring the project to reduce its cost while still providing the same benefits. The reconfiguration involved adopting a brown fields approach to water services infrastructure rather than the previous green fields (upgrading existing bulk water supply infrastructure rather than build new infrastructure).

“The reconfiguration of the project resulted in a decrease in the cost of the project from R18 billion to R8 billion, and National Treasury then agreed to fund the reconfigured project from the fiscus. As a result, site preparations and the process to obtain the license to construct the dam are currently underway and construction of the dam wall will commence by October 2024.”

A project to raise the wall of the Clanwilliam Dam in the Western Cape, resulting in a tripling of the volume of water than can be stored in the dam, was also started in 2013, but the implementation of the project was delayed due to budget constraints and several changes in construction approach.

As a result, by 2023 the project was only 10% complete. The delays have since been addressed, and the project is now fully funded and major construction work is currently underway.

Loskop Regional Bulk Water Supply project

The major Loskop Regional Bulk Water Supply project to increase water supply to Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in Mpumalanga and the Moutse-East area under the Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo, has since been unblocked with construction having begun in 2022.

The project was originally planned to commence in 2019 but was delayed because of funding constraints and poor planning by the department.

The construction of a new bulk pipeline from Loskop Dam in Mpumalanga to Thembisile Hani Local Municipality and associated infrastructure is also underway.

Giyani Water Supply project

The Giyani Water Supply Project, which has been delayed for many years, and been the subject of investigations by the Special Investigations Unit, has since been unblocked and accelerated over the last two years.

Mavasa highlighted that the main bulk pipeline from Nandoni Dam to Nsami Dam near Giyani was completed last year, and projects are currently underway to refurbish and increase the capacity of the Giyani Water Treatment Works and to install bulk reticulation lines, bulk reservoirs, service reservoirs and reticulation to households.

“Water has started to flow to households in nine of villages in Giyani and we will strive to ensure a further 15 villages receive water by the end of August this year, and that a further 31 villages receive water within the next two years.”

Water Services Amendment Bill

In addition to assisting municipalities to improve their water and sanitation infrastructure, the department has proposed amendments to the Water Services Act, to address the poor municipal performance illustrated by the results of the Blue, Green and no Drop reports which were issued in December 2023.

“The Water Services Amendment Bill will be submitted to Cabinet shortly for approval for it to be tabled in Parliament.”

Improvement in issuing of water use licence

Meanwhile, the department’s turnaround plan for the issuing of water use licences has seen an improvement in performance from 35% of applications being processed within 90 days to 70% being processed within 90 days.

“In addition, the backlog of more than a thousand applications has been largely eradicated, with no more than 100 applications which have taken longer than 90 days to process,” Mavasa said.

The department has committed that further improvement towards the President’s 2020 State of the Nation Address (SONA) target of processing all applications within 90 days, will be achieved during this financial year. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN Transport and SANTACO to meet over route disputes

KZN Transport and SANTACO to meet over route disputes

The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department is expected to hold a meeting with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and law enforcement officials to discuss and find lasting solutions to the ongoing disputes over taxi routes.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

This comes after illegal taxi operators blocked a road in Mayiwane, Ulundi, on Monday morning, and the  blockaded the R34 in Empangeni Mill, on Tuesday morning.

The road in Empangeni was later re-opened following intervention by law enforcement agencies and the department.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, commended the consistent and bold leadership displayed by SANTACO regarding the management of a dispute over the Nkonjeni route and illegal taxi operations in the region.

The MEC has received a briefing from the Head of the Department, Siboniso Mbhele, and the team regarding the disputes over the taxi routes, dating back to over two years.

“The department’s interventions and enforcement of the law will be intensified to ensure stability,” Duma said, while also emphasising that the meeting will not only ensure that a long-lasting solution is reached, but will also mark the beginning of a new chapter for the benefit of local commuters who rely on public transport.

The MEC also commended law enforcement agencies and municipalities that are working closely with the department to ensure compliance with the laws and the by-laws.

“The safety of commuters and the public at large is our priority. In particular, as a department, we have a responsibility to protect the businesses of honest taxi operators from illegal taxi operators and other criminals who use the taxi industry to achieve their objectives.

“Having assumed my new responsibilities in the department, we will have standing meetings with SANTACO. This is an important stakeholder, as it represents more than 246 associations and 16 regions.”

He added that SANTACO is responsible for the socio-economic well-being of the province.

“Across South Africa, statistics show that the number of people using taxi services each day is more than 15 million, with an annual turnover of more than R40 billion. In addition, taxi operators spend more than R15 billion on fuel and more than R10 billion on vehicles, [and] spend more than R150 million buying tyres annually.” SAnews.gov.za

How to Manage Resilient Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) Supply Chains

Location: Business
RS South Africa

In today's fast-changing and unpredictable world, maintaining a resilient supply chain for Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) is crucial for businesses across various sectors. The goal is not just to withstand disruptions but to adapt and thrive amidst them. Here RS South Africa (https://apo-opa.co/4c1KTyg)  MD Brian Andrew shares his top 5 tips on how to approach and manage MRO supply chains to ensure resilience against future shocks.

1. Focus on Trusted Suppliers

Instead of diversifying your MRO supplier base extensively, rely on a core group of trusted suppliers that can guarantee delivery certainty. Building strong relationships with these suppliers ensures stability and reliability in your supply chain.

2. Develop a Flexible Supply Chain

When faced with pressure, it's essential to act quickly while considering the long-term consequences. A flexible supply chain and suppliers that can adapt to changing circumstances is key. This flexibility includes being prepared for potential increases in spending or the need to switch suppliers without significant disruptions.

3. Leverage Technology and Data

Utilise eProcurement and Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) solutions from a trusted and stable procurement partner. Effective planning requires visibility into what is being consumed, especially for companies with multiple plants. High-quality data is essential for maintaining adequate inventory levels and ensuring supply chain resilience.

4. Engage in Sustainable and Ethical Procurement

Cost reduction is important, but sustainable and ethical procurement practices are equally vital. Work with partners who share common goals and include sustainability programs in your procurement processes. This approach not only benefits the environment but also aligns with the values of company management, shareholders, and customers.

5. Plan for Continuity

Continuity planning involves having a comprehensive action plan that includes compliance with policies, processes, and corporate governance. Ethical sourcing of raw materials should be a priority, and procurement departments should challenge the status quo by following ethical sourcing principles.

Supply chain resilience depends on the quality, reliability, and knowledge of suppliers. By working with the right MRO supplier, leveraging technology, and focusing on sustainable practices, businesses can better prepare for future disruptions and maintain a robust supply chain.
