The National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government will host the 5th BRICS Games official opening ceremony today.
The ceremony will take place at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban.
The latest edition of the 2023 BRICS Games will see young athletes aged between 19 and 21 across BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations battling for various honours within five sporting codes.
These include swimming, badminton, table tennis, tennis and beach volleyball.
The games will be played simultaneously across Kings Park Swimming Pool, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Curro Hillcrest High School and Bay of Plenty from October 18 to 21.

Johannesburg water reservoirs and towers are currently critically low to empty following Tuesday night’s thunderstorm, which caused a power failure at Rand Water's Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.
This has affected all the municipalities supplied by Zuikerbosch, including the City of Johannesburg.
“This comes as Johannesburg Water systems are already struggling, and Rand Water systems are also strained by high consumption, which is going to exacerbate the situation,” Johannesburg Water said.
The entity said the affected reservoirs and towers include South Hills; the Commando system (Brixton, Hursthill, and Crosby); Midrand systems; Crown Gardens; Eagles Nest; Naturena; Alexander Park; Berea; Linden 1 tower; Quellerina;,and Waterval.
Water status in reservoirs and towers
South Hills tower: Critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone. Pumping will resume once supply pressure improves.
Commando System
• Brixton reservoir: Critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone. Outlet will be throttled (pressure and flow to be reduced) to 70% overnight to build capacity.
• Brixton tower: The tower is empty. No water is expected in the supply zone. Pumping will resume once the reservoir level improves.
• Hursthill 1 reservoir: Despite attempts to augment supply, the reservoir is still critically low. The supply zone is anticipated to have low pressure to no water.
• Hursthill 2 reservoir: Critically low due to low supply. Low pressure to no water is expected in high-lying areas. Outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity.
• Crosby reservoir: Critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected in certain areas of the supply zone.
Crown Gardens reservoir and towers: The reservoir is critically low, and poor pressure to no water will be experienced in high-lying areas of the reservoir zone. Both towers are critically low, and no water is expected in the supply zone. Pumping will resume once reservoir levels improve.
Eagles Nest reservoir: Remains critically low. Customers in this supply zone should expect low pressure to no water.
Naturena reservoir: Critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected.
Alexander Park reservoir: Critically low. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
Berea reservoir: Critically low and on bypass mode. Low pressure to no water expected in the supply zone.
Linden 1 reservoir and tower: The reservoir is critically low, while the tower is supplying normally. Low pressure to no water is expected in the reservoir supply zone.
Midrand systems update
Grand Central reservoir: Critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
Grand Central tower: The tower is low and moving in a downwards trends. Pumping will resume once the reservoir capacity improves.
Errand reservoir 1 and 2: Both reservoirs are critically low. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
Errand tower: Tower is empty and on bypass mode. Pumping will resume once the reservoir levels improve. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
President Park reservoir and tower: Critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone. The tower is empty and on bypass mode. Low pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
“Alternative water supply has been arranged for the affected customers and will be placed at strategic locations,” the entity said.
Johannesburg Water has also urged residents to observe level 1 water restrictions, which are currently implemented.
“These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and water features between 06am and 06pm. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged.
“This is to ensure that systems are kept stable throughout the coming months. We urge residents to report any form of vandalism and theft of water infrastructure to 0800 00 25 87,” Johannesburg Water said. – SAnews.gov.za

High water usage puts strain on system
Rand Water and Johannesburg Water have urged consumers and citizens to use water sparingly as demand is exceeding supply.
In a joint stamen issued on Sunday, the utilities said they are noticing an increase in water consumption from customer meters that are in the system.
The utilities warned the increase is putting strain on the system.
"Consumers and citizens can assist by reducing their water consumption.
“Rand Water’s primary and secondary stations are operating at their maximum capacity. However, the entity is unable to maintain its reservoirs at high water levels because of high consumption by consumers and citizens in the metro and surrounding areas.
“As a result, reservoir levels remain at their lowest due to high consumption by consumers. Due to the system being integrated, even customers that are using water sparingly are being affected.
"High potable water consumption may result in the collapse of the system, which will result in intermittent water supply,” Rand Water spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo, said.
Maroo reiterated that South Africa is a water-scarce country.
“Consumer behaviour is important in ensuring sustainable and equitable water supply," she said.
Water saving tips
Customers, including consumers and all citizens, are urged to conserve water by implementing the following water saving tips:
• Avoid watering lawns and gardens with clean drinking water.
• Refrain from filling-up swimming pools until consumption has reduced.
• Do not clean paved areas and driveways with clean drinking water.
• Wash your cars only on weekends using buckets.
• Take a two-minute shower instead of using bathtubs.
• Do not leave your tap running when brushing teeth.
• Fix all leaking plumbing features in your houses.
• Flush toilets only for the brown and not the yellow.
• Report leaking water pipes to the respective local municipalities within the City of Johannesburg.
“Rand Water and Johannesburg Water commit to constant provision of high quality drinking water to all its customers and citizens, thus ensuring the sustainable security of water supply. Citizens and all other consumers are requested to assist in this endeavour and use water sparingly and wisely,” the utilities said. – SAnews.gov.za

Tshwane residents urged to use water sparingly amid high demand
The City of Tshwane has appealed to residents to use water sparingly as the city has experienced a sharp increase in water consumption beyond what can sustainably be supplied.
The city said the increase in water demand has resulted in some reservoirs within the city struggling and some areas being without water.
“The current high demand situation is putting customers at risk of having stringent restrictions imposed, which comes with additional costs for residents. Communities are implored to use water sparingly,” the city said in a statement.
According to the city, the areas where water consumption is significantly higher than what they should be consuming are Nellmapius; Leander Road Meter; Blair Athol Reservoir; Louwlardia Reservoir; Laudium Reservoir; Wonderboom Reservoir; Klapperkop H14; Lotus Gardens; Kosmosdal, and Doornkloof Reservoir.
Other areas with high consumption include Klapperkop Reservoir; Bakenkop Reservoir; Magaliesberg Reservoir; Garsfontein Reservoir; Soshanguve; Waterkloof Ridge Ext No 2; Constantia Park; Gastonbury Reservoir, and Grootfontein.
The city also noted that the Mooikloof Reservoir has been struggling with low to no water supply due to increased water consumption.
The city urged the residents to make the following water conservation measures part of their normal lifestyle:
• Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 6am and 6pm;
• Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes; and
• Do not fill swimming pools.
“Furthermore, residents are urged to start using greywater to water gardens and flush toilets. Residents should report water leaks, burst pipes and all incidents where water is wasted. Where possible, water saving devices should be installed,” the city said.
Plan to respond to peak demand period
Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, David Mahlobo, has given Rand Water and the City of Tshwane two weeks to put together a medium- to long-term plan on how they are going to respond to the peak demand period that is exacerbated by high temperatures, interruptions in storage capacity recovery due to load shedding, non-revenue water, as well as how the city will receive the extra water to be allocated from Rand Water.
Mahlobo gave the directive during a meeting between Rand Water and the City of Tshwane.
During the meeting, the technical team -- led by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) Provincial Head Justice Maluleke; Rand Water Chief Executive Sipho Mosai and the City of Tshwane’s Group Head for Water and Sanitation Stephens Notoane -- presented a report back on progress made on the action plan.
The plan had been presented and committed to by Rand Water and Tshwane, in order to restore water supply in areas that were experiencing challenges, and ensure sustainable and efficient supply in the city.
The meeting reported significant improvements, as water supply has been restored in most areas. However, it noted that some parts of the city, especially in high lying areas, are still grappling with water supply challenges as the system recovers.
Mahlobo expressed his appreciation to the city and water utility in how they handled the situation. He urged the two institutions to continue strengthening proactive cooperation and communication for the benefit of the citizens.
The Deputy Minister also reiterated the city’s call on residents to be considerate when using water, as some reservoirs in the city are experiencing slow recovery due to high water usage by people in low-lying areas.
He further urged the city to include in the plan how they will address the issue of leaks that is contributing to water losses in the distribution system. – SAnews.gov.za
