Confirmed speakers include the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, South Africa's Minister of Electricity & Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Nigeria's Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu and Noureddine Yassaa, Algeria's Secretary of State for Renewable Energies.

The Awards Ceremony was conducted virtually to honor and celebrate the outstanding contributions of all the winning media professionals. The winners were warmly acknowledged by Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of the “More Than a Mother” campaign.

Minister reaffirms commitment to efficient policing
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has reaffirmed the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) commitment to realising an efficient, effective, and responsible police service.
“… I want to reaffirm our commitment. We are committed to realising an efficient, effective, and responsible police service; one that reflects the values and aspirations of our democracy. This is non-negotiable,” the Minister said.
Mchunu was addressing a media briefing on the outcomes of the recently held three-day National Policing Summit.
“The people of South Africa demand policing that is efficient, effective, and accountable. The people of South Africa demand a police service that is worthy of their trust, and most importantly, the people of South Africa demand that we act.”

At Friday’s briefing in Pretoria, the Minister said that the priorities of the police are to reduce murder, remove unnecessary firearms from communities, remove drugs, fight gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) and organised crime.
The police are also aware of the increases in crimes such as kidnappings, extortion, cash-in-transit heists and stock theft.
Additionally, police have classified the provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape as hotspots.
“As a means of effectively reducing crime, we have identified several key enablers, inclusive of using and improving our technology, strengthening our crime intelligence, capacitating and upskilling our detective services, improving and expanding our forensic services and improving the general environment under which police officers work.
“We have made mention of the budgetary constraints, but we have also committed to maximising the budget allocated and the resources at our disposal.
“Business has also come on board and through that partnership, there are projects aimed at capacitating, particularly our detective services, improving our technology and increasing our laboratories,” he explained.
Operations Room
Meanwhile, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said that the summit engaged with seasoned researchers, academic leaders, the business sector, subject matter experts and community structures. The engagements were focused on how to turn the the tide, recalibrate and reposition the SAPS for the future.
“During the summit deliberations, we assessed the current state and performance of the SAPS, focussed on operational inefficiencies. We identified pragmatic strategies that will improve and advance maximum effectiveness in policing while strategically repositioning the SAPS to ensure long-term relevance, heightened professionalism and the restoration of public trust.
“The SAPS will establish a National Policing Summit Operations Room. This facility will house a permanent scoreboard that will track and trace progress on the resolutions of the summit periodically for the next five years.
“We believe that this significant move will hold the management of the SAPS accountable to the nation, as we commit to turnaround the policing direction of this country,” Masemola explained.
Visibility
The Commissioner added that the summit’s focus was not on theoretical discussion alone, but rather on diagnosing real operational challenges, understanding community perceptions and analysing systemic shortcomings.
“The summit placed special emphasis on rethinking how SAPS can maximise its impact within existing constraints while repositioning itself for long-term relevance, professionalism, and enhancing public trust in policing.
“The first day of the summit interrogated the difference between being seen and being felt in communities. While the SAPS often reports on patrols and deployments, the quality and impact of these efforts on safety perceptions was central to the conversation.”
Masemola explained that the discussions reflected a disconnect between visible policing efforts and actual community safety outcomes, prompting a call for a more intentional, impact-focused presence.
Masemola also hinted that the Summit touched on technology as a transformative tool in the modernisation of policing.
“Summit discussions addressed real-time crime tracking, GIS [ geographic information system] mapping, AI-driven analytics, and predictive policing. Participants discussed how these technologies can help SAPS anticipate criminal activity and deploy resources more efficiently.
“Emphasis was placed on data quality, interoperability of systems and the critical need for digital literacy within SAPS,” said the Commissioner.
President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened the summit that was held at Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Gauteng on Tuesday.

GBV laws must be strengthened: President Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasised the urgent need to confront and address existing blind spots within the legal system, which continue to undermine the rights and interests of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).
Delivering the keynote address at the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) biennial conference on Wednesday, the President said it is critical that these legal deficiencies are urgently identified and resolved.
“A central issue is overcoming the blind spots in the law and the legal system that are working against the rights and interests of survivors.
“For the fight against gender-based violence to be strengthened and have a measurable and sustainable impact, it is critical that these deficiencies are addressed to bring about change,” the President said.
Judges, magistrates, legal professionals and policymakers from across the world are currently meeting at the biennial conference of the IAWJ underway in Cape Town to address the global scourge of gender-based violence and femicide through judicial leadership and activism.
This year’s conference is organised under the theme" “Resilience: Women in Leadership to End Gender-Based Violence & Femicide”.
It is the first to be hosted in South Africa under the leadership of a female Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Mandisa Maya, who is also the IAWJ Vice President.
President Ramaphosa last addressed the IAWJ back in 2022, which was the year the country passed a trio of laws to strengthen the legal framework and offer greater protection to survivors.
Following an extensive public consultation process, the country amended three existing laws as part of the wider effort to combat GBVF.
Amendments were made to the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act to introduce a new category of sexual intimidation, and to expand the scope of the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The Criminal and Related Matters Amendment Act was amended to regulate the granting and cancellation of bail, to regulate sentences for offenses committed against vulnerable persons, and to advance the right of complainants to participate in parole proceedings.
Lastly, the Domestic Violence Act was amended to expand the existing definitions of domestic violence, and to enable survivors to apply for protection orders online.
President Ramaphosa stressed that while courts are constitutionally mandated to dispense justice without fear or favour, it is equally important that justice is seen to be done.
He said that in addressing the scourge of gender-based violence, it is not enough to have laws in place -- they must be implemented and enforced effectively.
“In the context of gender equality, and within the context of high levels of gender-based violence more specifically, what do we mean? It means laws cannot just be written -- they must be enforced.
“It means that perpetrators must be held accountable, and that the sentences they are given should reflect the seriousness of their crimes. When judicial discretion is exercised in a prescribed minimum sentencing regime, the reasons for departure must indeed be substantial and compelling,” he said.
The President further highlighted the need for fairness, not only in ensuring the accused receives a fair trial, but also in how survivors of gender-based violence are treated by the courts.
“It means fairness, and this doesn’t only apply to an accused’s right to a fair trial. It also applies to fair treatment of survivors of GBV by our courts, and that they should not be subjected to bias and victim-blaming,” the President said.
President Ramaphosa emphasised that the IAWJ is a catalyst for change, highlighting the unique contribution that women judges make to the legal profession.
“As women judges, your lived experiences provide insight into the realities behind the cases, and you have the power to reshape how the law is interpreted, how justice is delivered, and how society evolves.
“This conference is an opportunity to sharpen our collective commitment to law that heals, courts that transform, and to systems that centre humanity,” he said.
In addition to utilising the law, President Ramaphosa emphasised the need to embark on many other efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide, and have a multifaceted approach that will include education and spreading awareness about the importance of gender equality from a young age.
He also underscored the importance of engaging men and boys in the conversation to prevent gender-based violence. He further called on society to advocate for women’s empowerment and economic independence, which would help reduce their vulnerability to abuse.
“We must make men and boys part of the conversation to prevent gender-based violence. We should also as society insist that women should have more control over their lives and economic independence which will reduce their vulnerability to violence.
“I wish you well in your deliberations and I am confident that the outcomes of this conference will make a significant impact in advancing the fight against gender based violence and femicide,” the President said.

The Merck Foundation Cancer Access Program provides One, two- and three-years fellowship, Post Graduate Diploma and Master Degree of oncology for doctors from Africa. The clinical training has been conducted in India, Egypt and Kenya. Additionaly, Merck Foundation also provides scholarships for 2 years online PG Diploma in Cancer and Clinical Oncology, 01 year online PG Diploma in Medical Oncology and 1 year online PG Diploma in Pain Management from reputed Universities in UK like University of South Wales, University of Buckingham, Queen Mary University of London, and Cardiff University.
Merck Foundation is establishing Multidisciplinary Oncology Care teams in many African countries by providing scholarships of clinical training in Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Pediatrics Oncology, Gynecology Oncology, Breast Oncology, Haemato-Oncology, Orthopaedic Oncology, Palliative Care, Pathology Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Research in Oncology, Surgical Oncology - Genital Urinary System, Advanced Cytopathology Training, Interventional Radiology, Radiation Technician, Laboratory Technician, Oncology Nursing.
Merck Foundation through its Merck Foundation Cancer Access Program has provided 194 scholarships of Oncology to doctors from 32 countries including Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“In several of these countries, there wasn't even a single oncologist. We are proud to be making history in Africa by training the first oncologists and establishing the first cancer care teams in nations such as The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Liberia, Guinea Conakry, Central African Republic, Chad, and Niger. Merck Foundation remains committed to transforming the landscape of cancer care across the continent and leading Africa toward a healthier future,” explained Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej.
Africa records around 1.1 million new cases of cancer, resulting in up to 700,000 deaths, every year, as per WHO data. The mortality rate of cancer patients is very high in Africa, as compared to the rest of the world.
“One of the key reasons is also the late diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, these scholarships are very important” added Senator Kelej.
Merck Foundation has also created awareness materials including awareness leaflets and videos on Cancer Prevention and Early Detection.
Dr. Chifundo Kajombo, Merck Foundation Alumni from Malawi shares, “I am privileged to be awarded a scholarship by Merck Foundation to pursue the Surgical Oncology fellowship training program at Tata Memorial Hospital, India. I managed to advance from basic surgical oncology principles to the advanced level. This has helped me improve my understanding of cancer and operative principles. Since returning back home, I have managed to change the structure of how our breast clinic runs and modified it to incorporate a number of new things that we probably could not have possibly included. I am so proud to share that I have just been awarded the Best Surgeon for 2023 in Malawi. I would not have achieved this feat without Merck Foundation's scholarship. I am very thankful.”

The awards were announced by Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of Merck Foundation ‘More Than a Mother' campaign, together with African First Ladies, who are also the Ambassadors of Merck Foundation ‘More Than a Mother' campaign.

IEC CEO calls for responsible, inclusive approach to e-voting in South Africa
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) Chief Executive Officer, Sy Mamabolo, has underscored the need for a responsible and inclusive approach to adopting new voting technologies.
The CEO was delivering remarks at the e-Voting Conference in Cape Town on Monday. The IEC is hosting a groundbreaking national dialogue on the future of voting in South Africa from 10 - 12 March 2025, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
This three-day conference will launch South Africa's first Green Paper on e-Voting, bringing together voices from across society to shape how South Africans might vote in future elections.
“While digitalisation is becoming more prevalent in our daily lives, we must acknowledge that some portions of our country continue to have limited access to broadband connectivity, particularly in rural areas. In our discussion here, let us not be oblivious that a significant number of South Africans still have limited access to technology.
“Having said so, it is evident that the adoption of new technologies is apposite and necessary. We cannot be oblivious to the ever-present force that drives innovation and exposes us to new possibilities,” Mamabolo said.
The conference, which seeks to shape public policy on e-voting, comes at a time when South Africa is undergoing a digital transformation across various sectors. The Vision 2030 roadmap of South Africa emphasises incorporating technology into business, education and governance.
The country's burgeoning digital ecosystem is distinguished by developments in technology infrastructure driven by public and private sector partnerships.
Mamabolo said the rapid growth of data analytics, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure has transformed how most industries do business today and how ordinary folk converse.
Global and African E-Voting Experiences
The CEO highlighted that countries such as Estonia, Switzerland, Brazil and India have implemented or tested e-voting systems, while others have paused or abandoned such initiatives due to concerns related to security, costs and reliability.
In Africa, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo have explored e-voting, but challenges have hindered widespread implementation.
Mamabolo noted that some of the common delays or factors halting the implementation of e-voting in many countries are largely related to security concerns and affordability.
As a result, many countries have focused on digitalising aspects of the voting process (such as registration or information access) rather than implementing full-scale electronic voting systems and related technologies for their elections.
“As much as the prospects for experimenting with e-voting systems and technologies can be exciting, we must also approach it with open minds and a sense of responsibility.
“At the forefront of these challenges are questions of security and trust. We remain committed to our mandate to deliver uncompromised elections with utmost integrity, impartiality and accountability,” he said.
Addressing security concerns and digital divide
Mamabolo further stressed that in an era where cyber threats are increasingly prevalent, ensuring the safety and security of an electronic voting system is paramount.
“We must build systems that are resilient, secure, and able to withstand the threats of today and the future,” he said.
Moreover, he urged that the digital divide must be urgently addressed.
“As we indicate, South Africa is a country with varying levels of technological access. While urban areas may have reliable internet and a high rate of technological literacy, rural communities, and impoverished areas still face significant barriers to digital inclusion,” the CEO said.
IEC's Preparedness and Public Engagement
The IEC has already integrated technology into its processes through initiatives such as an online voter registration system, which allows citizens to register or update their details remotely.
“The Electoral Commission is already ahead of the curve when it comes to embracing the advent of technology. The Commission has implemented an online voter registration system that enables new voters to register and existing voters to update or alter their registration from the comfort of their own homes or anywhere. This online registration portal is not constrained by time and space,” the CEO said.
The commission believes that engaging with the public and key stakeholders is essential to ensuring that any transition to e-voting is both transparent and widely accepted.
“As the Commission, we encourage conversations, discussions, and lively debates among South Africans from all walks of life on this matter, as we have seen happening in some social media platforms recently. Such national conversation is essential because elections are a public enterprise that belong to all citizens of our country,” he said.
Prior work conducted on e-voting
As part of its commitment to facilitating informed decision-making, Mamabolo said the Commission always had e-voting in its line of sight, with electronic voting discussions having commenced back in 2013.
The Electoral Commission has carried out several investigations into this subject, aiming to learn from the global experiences of countries that have either successfully or unsuccessfully tried to implement e-voting.
It has explored issues such as available technologies, costs, security/reliability, public trust, existing tech infrastructure in SA and policy options, among others.
It has identified the need for thorough public dialogue/discussions on the feasibility/potential benefits and risks.
The IEC has compiled a Discussion Document based on findings from its 2023 research study on electronic voting, which explored prospects and potential challenges for e-voting in SA.
“The way forward for e-voting to be a viable solution [is that] it must be accessible to all South Africans regardless of their location or socio-economic status. That is why our discussions here must be comprehensive, aiming to address all blind spots and ultimately provide fit-for-purpose solutions for all South Africans,” Mamabolo said.
Looking ahead
The IEC has not yet determined whether e-voting will be proposed to Parliament but aims to lead a comprehensive discussion on its feasibility.
To this end, the commission will launch a series of nationwide workshops and public consultations, gathering insights from citizens and stakeholders. Mamabolo said the feedback will be used to refine the Discussion Document, which could eventually inform a National Green Paper on e-voting.
South Africans are encouraged to participate in the conversation through various platforms, including email submissions, social media engagements, and public discussions.
