The Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Tembisa Ndabeni, has announced the appointment of Vuyani Jarana as Chairperson for the Startup20 Engagement Group for South Africa’s Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency.
In a statement on Monday, the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) said it has been entrusted with leading South Africa’s Startup20 Engagement Group, one of the officially recognised G20 Engagement Groups.
As Chairperson, Jarana will lead Startup20’s strategic direction, appoint task force chairs, coordinate high-level meetings and events, and guide the development of the Startup20 Policy Communiqué, which will contribute to the official G20 Leaders’ Declaration.
The Minister also appointed 22 On Sloane as the Secretariat of the Startup20 Engagement Group for South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
Startup20 advocates for startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at the G20 level, developing policy recommendations to advance the global startup ecosystem and foster inclusive innovation.
“To support this effort, 22 On Sloane has been appointed as the Country Secretariat for Startup20 during South Africa’s G20 Presidency. Twenty-two (22) On Sloane is Africa’s largest startup campus, playing a pivotal role in advancing the startup and MSME ecosystem across the continent.
“Twenty-two (22) On Sloane serves as headquarters for the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Africa, which is represented in 43 African countries, and as the country headquarters of GEN Global which has a presence in 180 countries globally aimed at supporting entrepreneurs to start and scale,” the department said.
As Secretariat, 22 On Sloane will support Jarana to coordinate and manage all Startup20 activities in South Africa, including stakeholder engagements, task force operations, international collaboration efforts, policy drafting, and logistical delivery of the Startup20 agenda.
The organisation will also facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues and policy consultations to ensure that Africa’s entrepreneurial voice is firmly embedded in the ensuing global conversations.
According to the department, Jarana brings a wealth of experience to this crucial role, with more than 25 years of leadership in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.
A seasoned business transformation leader, Jarana previously served as Group Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Vodacom Business within the Vodacom Group.
He also held the role of Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways, where he spearheaded critical restructuring efforts.
Currently he is the Founder and CEO of Ilitha Telecommunications, a company dedicated to delivering superfast, affordable broadband to underserved peri-urban and rural communities.
He also serves as Chairperson of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a key institution driving South Africa’s scientific, industrial, and technological innovation agenda.
“His extensive experience and expertise will be invaluable in driving our efforts to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa. He is a respected and seasoned business leader whom I am confident will lead the Startup20 Engagement Group with dedication and focus, ensuring that this serves as a legacy for our country and the ecosystem,” the Minister said.
The G20 is an international forum of both developing and developed countries, which seeks to find solutions to global economic and financial issues.

Basic Education launches app to track eradication of pit toilets
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has unveiled the Safe Schools App, a technological solution designed to tackle one of the most urgent issues in South African schools - the eradication of pit toilets.
The app was unveiled to the media in Tshwane on Monday afternoon during a briefing hosted by the department.
The Safe Schools App, developed and donated by Vodacom South Africa, is a tool aimed at promoting accountability and transparency in addressing the pressing challenge.
“The Safe Schools App is more than just an application; it is a bold statement of our resolve to eliminate unsafe sanitation facilities in schools and to do so with transparency, efficiency and accountability,” Gwarube said.
The Minister outlined three strategic objectives for the app.
In the short-term, it will provide real-time monitoring of the eradication of pit toilets. The app features a dynamic heat map that tracks progress on the removal of pit latrines nationwide. This feature ensures that government has access to real-time information about its efforts on the SAFE backlog. It also highlights areas requiring urgent attention, ensuring that indeed, no child is left behind.
In the medium-term, the app will enable crowdsourcing of data to fill existing gaps in information about sanitation facilities across the country.
In the long-term, the department will roll out the use of the app to monitor other key programmes.
Beyond sanitation, the app has the potential to serve as a key platform to track other critical departmental initiatives, including the National School Nutrition Programme, infrastructure projects, and the delivery of learning and teaching materials.
Gwarube said the launch of the app represented a significant step forward in the department’s strategy to leverage technological partnerships to improve education outcomes in the country.
“In today’s world, technology is not just a tool but a necessity. It allows us to enhance accountability, optimise resource allocation, and improve efficiency across the education system.
“The Safe Schools App is a prime example of how technology can be harnessed to address societal challenges that seemed too big and too complex for us to resolve,” she said.
The Minister invited every South African to play a role in ensuring that the nation’s schools are safe and dignified spaces for learning.
“This is what education in a modern democracy should look like: engaged, participatory and driven by a shared vision for the future,” she said.
Mechanism for accountability
Gwarube said accountability was at the heart of the Safe Schools App.
By providing a clear and real-time view of progress, the app ensures that everyone involved -- government officials, implementing agents, school administrators, and communities -- remain focused on achieving the goal of eradicating the backlog of SAFE pit toilets by the 31 March 2025 deadline.
“This tool will enable us to identify and respond to delays, allocate resources where they are needed most, and celebrate successes along the way. It is a game-changer in how we approach infrastructure challenges, and I believe it sets a new standard for accountability and for transparency in public service delivery,” Gwarube said.
The Minister said the eradication of pit toilets speaks to the dignity, safety, and well-being of children in schools.
“It is about ensuring that every learner, regardless of their background or location, has access to toilets that reflect the values of a democratic and inclusive society,” she said.
She said the urgency of the task cannot be overstated because unsafe sanitation facilities not only compromise the health and safety of learners but also impact their ability to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.
The Minister urged every parent, teacher and concerned citizen to report pit toilets to www.safeschools.gov.za.
“This is a collective effort, and every contribution counts. By working together, we can ensure that no child has to endure unsafe or undignified learning conditions,” Gwarube said.
Tragic losses
Pit latrines in South Africa have claimed the lives of several children, highlighting the urgent need for improved sanitation in schools.
Tragic incidents include the case of Michael Komape, a five-year-old boy who drowned in a pit toilet at his school in Limpopo in 2014. His death brought national and international attention to the dire state of sanitation infrastructure in rural schools.
In 2018, Lumka Mketwa, a five-year-old girl from the Eastern Cape, died after falling into a pit latrine at her school.
The South African Human Rights Commission and other organisations have called for accountability and the urgent eradication of pit latrines, emphasising the role of government and private sector partnerships in addressing this critical issue. – SAnews.gov.za

Vodacom Group Launches Initiative to Upskill 1 Million Young People Across Africa
Vodacom Group (www.Vodacom.com) has partnered with technology providers to provide young people on the continent with access to digital skills as part of its commitment to driving digital literacy for Africa's next generation. Together with AWS, Microsoft, Skillsoft and other collaborating organisations Vodacom aims to bridge the digital skills gap across eight African countries and upskill 1million young people by 2027.
The Vodacom Group Digital Skills Hub is available in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt (Talimy), the Democratic Republic of Congo (VodaEduc), and in Kenya (Industry Digital Talent Program) to empower the next generation of digital innovators, enabling Africa's digital society and leveraging existing e-learning platforms in the respective markets.
According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), over 230 million jobs will require digital skills in Africa by 2030, yet the continent faces a significant gap in supply and demand for digital expertise.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub provides access to self-paced, digital skills training for those aged between 18 and 35. Last night, the five 2024 Earthshot Prize Winners were announced at a star-studded awards ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, hosted by Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Billy Porter and award-winning television presenter Bonang Matheba. The 2024 Winners, selected from this year's 15 Earthshot Finalists, will be awarded £1 million each to accelerate and scale their game-changing environmental solutions.

Keep IT Cool (KIC) addresses the challenge of food spoilage by providing sustainable, localized refrigeration systems that help small farmers and fishers preserve their produce. By installing solar-powered cold storage units where fish are landed, KIC significantly reduces spoilage and waste by ensuring the catch stays fresh and managing its transport to market. With plans to grow into East Africa and beyond, KIC is now working to expand their activities in poultry, fruit and vegetables and aims to bring their solution to more communities.

Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has achieved the almost unprecedented feat of saving the critically endangered Saiga antelope from extinction. This mission has grown into one of the world's largest conservation projects and is focused on protecting and restoring Kaakhstan's Golden Steppe, one of the world's least protected natural ecosystems.

A youth-led, gender-balanced organisation, GAYO uses its “Zero Waste Model” to drive behavioural change in waste management practices across Africa that cut greenhouse gas emissions and particle pollution, while also bringing additional income to communities. Their goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and particle pollution in Ghana by 70%, compared to open burning, as well as divert a total of 4,000 tonnes of waste by 2030. GAYO's plans to scale would make them the leading model for waste management on the continent.

The five Winners of the 2024 Prize cohort were selected by Prince William and The Earthshot Prize Council, a diverse group of experts, advocates and individuals dedicated to championing urgent and innovative action to protect our planet. The Earthshot Prize Council is chaired by The Earthshot Prize Board of Trustees Chair, Dame Christiana Figueres, architect of the Paris Agreement.

Actor, humanitarian, and Earthshot Global Ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha will serve as the official host for Earthshot Week. SA Department of Communications and Digital Technologies Partners With Africa Tech Festival 2024, Hosts Exclusive Ministerial Summit

When the 27th edition of Africa Tech Festival (https://AfricaTechFestival.com) kicks off on 12 November at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa, the spotlight will be on the exceptional women shaping the future of technology and telecoms in Africa. With August marking the celebration of Women's Month in the host country, the event will proudly showcase many of the women leaders driving growth and innovation across the sector.
Taking place from 12 to 14 November, Africa Tech Festival 2024 incorporates AfricaCom, AfricaTech, AfricaIgnite, and The AI Summit Cape Town, which will welcome a cumulative 15,000 visitors, more than 400 speakers, and over 300 exhibitors as it explores enterprise tech innovation and disruption across key sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud and data centres, and green ICT.
