The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) strongly condemns the actions of officials and members of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) who unlawfully disconnected the electricity supply of the Paul Kruger Children’s Home in Villieria on Wednesday. Such conduct borders on criminality.

The officials forced open the electricity box and violently yanked out the main circuit breaker after allegations of non-payment.

According to the available information, though, the Children’s Home’s account with the Tshwane Metro was not in arrears. Payment had already been made before the power supply was disconnected. Despite this, the officials proceeded.

These actions not only violated the rights of the Children’s Home as a juristic person, but also seriously jeopardised the safety, well-being and dignity of the vulnerable children in its care.

It is unacceptable that an institution caring for orphaned and vulnerable children is subjected to such steps.

What is even more disturbing is that TMPD members allegedly assaulted the manager of the Children’s Home when he objected to the disconnection. If these allegations are confirmed, those involved should face criminal charges, and the Freedom Front Plus will see to it.

Legal representatives are already preparing urgent court proceedings against the Municipality on behalf of the Children’s Home.

The Freedom Front Plus has also sent a letter to the City Manager, Mr Johann Mettler, demanding a thorough investigation and disciplinary steps against the relevant officials.

Children’s homes ought to be places of safety and protection. When municipal officials and Metro Police officers abuse their power to intimidate vulnerable institutions, it undermines public trust in the government and the principles of the constitutional state.

No one is above the law. The Freedom Front Plus will monitor this matter closely and use all available means to ensure that the rights of the Children’s Home, its staff and the children in its care are protected.
